Simultaneous attenuation of phytoaccumulation of Cd and As in soil treated with inorganic and organic amendments

A novel FeSiCa rich material (IS), chicken manure (CM) and its biochar were investigated for their efficiency in simultaneous remediation of Cd and As uptake by the vegetable Brassica chinensis L. Wet chemistry analysis and X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy as well as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to reveal the mechanisms responsible for Cd and As fixation in the amended soils. The IS treatment performed best in reducing Cd uptake, while the combination of IS and CM was the optimal one for As fixation. The precipitation/co-precipitation (in cadmium silicate/phosphate/phosphate hydroxide, cadmium iron and manganese oxides under alkaline conditions, and calcium/magnesium/ferric arsenates) and specific chemisorption (by amorphous iron/manganese oxides) were proved to be more efficient in simultaneously lowering As and Cd phytoavailability than was organic complexation. These findings demonstrate that FeSiCa and FeSiCaC amendments are highly efficient and promising in-situ remediation systems for safe crop production on soils contaminated with Cd and As.

We measured the concentrations of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in some biotic samples which can serve as human foodstuffs and ambient environments including air and river water from an agricultural area of Chongqing, western China. Fish samples exhibited highest OPEs levels (960 ng/g lipid weight) among the biota, followed by chicken (676 ng/g lw), cattle (545 ng/g lw) and pigs (535 ng/g lw). Tributyl phosphate (TNBP), tris (2-methylpropyl) (TIBP) and chlorinated OPEs were the major analogs in biotic samples, which appeared similar with the patterns from river water and outdoor air, but apparently different from indoor air. To further investigate the influence of ambient environment on the distribution of OPEs in biota, we analyzed the correlation between OPEs concentrations in ambient environment and biological samples, and the results revealed that most of the samples (except for pig samples) heavily correlated with outdoor air, whereas only fish and cattle samples were strongly correlated with river water. The partitioning behaviors of OPEs among biota, air and river water were also studied through calculating the biota-water accumulation factors (BWAFs), biota-air accumulation factors (BAAFs) and air-water partitioning factor (AWPFs). Significantly linear correlations (P < 0.05) were observed between log (BWAFs) and log (KOW) values, and between log (AWPFs) and log H (Henry's law constants), nevertheless log (BAAFs) was increasing along with the log (KOA) values. The daily intake (DI) values were estimated via foodstuffs ingestion and environmental exposure. The estimated DI values of OPEs from food and ambient environments were 1.78 ng/kg-bw/day, 1.23 ng/kg-bw/day and 1.42 ng/kg-bw/day in toddlers, children and adults, respectively, which lay at the low end of the reported data and well below the reference dose (RfD).

A new carboxylate-functionalized hydrochar (CFHC) was successfully prepared by reaction of hydrochar with maleic anhydride under solvent-free conditions and followed by deprotonating carboxyl group of hydrochar with NaHCO₃ solution. CFHC was characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), elemental analysis (EA), zeta potential, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area (BET) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and its adsorption properties and mechanisms to methylene blue (MB) and Cd(II) were investigated using the batch method. The isotherm adsorption data were accorded with Langmuir model and the maximum uptakes were 1155.57 and 90.99 mg/g for MB and Cd(II) at the temperature of 303 K, respectively. The joint analysis of batch experiments and characterizations of hydrochar confirmed the π-π interaction was accompanied by electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bond for MB adsorption, while the surface complexation and ion exchange were predominant mechanisms for Cd(II) adsorption. Therefore, a highly effective adsorbent CFHC prepared by a simple and environmentally friendly solid-phase synthesis is a promising candidate for wastewater treatment.

In the present study, the 16S-rRNA sequencing of heavy metal-resistant and susceptible bacterial strains isolated from the industrial and agriculture soil showed resemblance with Pseudomonas taiwanensis. Based on the growth rate, two bacterial strains SJPS_KUD54 and KUD-MBBT4 exhibited 10 ppm tolerance to Arsenic and Cadmium. These two heavy metals caused, a significant increase in stress enzymes like superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione S-transferase activities in SJPS_KUD54 when compared to KUD-MBBT4. Following heavy metal treatment, the atomic-force-microscopy observations showed no change in the cell-wall of SJPS_KUD54, whereas the cell-wall of KUD-MBBT4 got ruptured. Moreover, the protein-profile of SJPS_KUD54 treated with heavy metals exhibited varied patterns in comparison with untreated control. In addition, the accumulation of hydroxyl, thiol and amides were found in the SJPS_KUD54 relative to its control. Furthermore, the resistant SJPS_KUD54 strain showed a remarkable bioaccumulation properties to both Arsenic and Cadmium. Thus, it is inferred that the growth rate, stress enzymes and functional-groups play a significant role in the physiological-adaption of SJPS_KUD54 during stress conditions, which is positively involved in the prevention or repair mechanism for reducing the risks caused by heavy metal stress.

Sulfide-rich tailings produced by mineral processing are prone to oxidation and cause many pollution problems in the surrounding environment; therefore, this issue has become a focus of attention. The Tongling Shuimuchong tailings reservoir contains a large amount of sulfide minerals, especially pyrrhotite and pyrite. This reservoir features obvious oxidation in the surface layer, and the slab is very hard. Mineralogical and environmental geochemical analyses were performed on tailings with different degrees of oxidation in the Shuimuchong tailings reservoir to investigate the influence of the formation of the hard oxidized layer on environmental pollution in the tailings pond. The samples were first subjected to particle-size analysis. The shallow tailings were mainly composed of medium particle; the proportions of coarse particle and fine tailings particles were equal; and the proportions of clay and silt were less than those of the other size fractions. Mineralogical analysis showed that pyrrhotite and pyrite were replaced by residual structures in the oxide layer. The secondary minerals goethite, hematite and jarosite were attached to the edges and fractures of sulfide minerals. The samples were geochemically analyzed to determine the total concentrations of 5 elements, the pH and the major anions. The maximum SO₄²⁻ concentrations of 33,970 and 32,749 mg/kg were observed at a depth of 40 cm in profiles 1 and 2, respectively. Metal sulfide mineral oxidation in the tailings lowered the pH of the materials to values less than 4. The concentration of HCO₃⁻ (122–635 mg/kg) in the tailings samples was very low, and the concentration of CO₃²⁻ was zero. As (53.2–133.7 mg/kg), Pb (24.2–307.5 mg/kg) and Hg (0.03–0.06 mg/kg) were concentrated in the highly oxidized layer at the surface; the Cd content (0.23–10.5 mg/kg) increased with decreasing oxidation degree of the tailings; and the Cr content (38.0–54.9 mg/kg) fluctuated around a certain value.

Pyrite weathering often occurs in nature and causes heavy metal ion pollution and acid mine drainage during the process. Humic acid (HA) is a critical natural organic material that can bind metal ions, thus affecting metal transfer and transformation. In this work, in situ electrochemical techniques combined with spectroscopic analysis were adopted to investigate the interfacial processes involved in pyrite weathering with/without HA. The results showed that the pyrite weathering mechanism with/without HA is FeS₂ → Fe²⁺ + 2S⁰ + 2e⁻. The presence of HA did not change the pyrite weathering mechanism, but HA adsorbs on the pyrite surface and inhibits the further transformation of sulfur. Furthermore, HA and Fe(II) ions can form complex at 45.0 °C. Increased concentration of HA, decreased HA solution acidity or decreased environmental temperature would all weaken the pyrite weathering, for the above conditions cause pyrite weathering to have a larger resistance of the double layer and a larger passive film resistance. Pyrite will release 73.7 g m⁻²·y⁻¹ Fe²⁺ to solution at pH 4.5, and the amount decreases to 36.8 g m⁻²·y⁻¹ in the presence of 100 mg/L HA. This study provides an in situ electrochemical method for the assessment of pyrite weathering.

Spiramycin is a widely used macrolide antibiotic and exists at high concentration in production wastewater. A thermal-acid hydrolytic pretreatment using silicotungstic acid (STA) under microwave (MW) irradiation was suggested to mitigate spiramycin from production wastewater. Positive correlations were observed between STA dosage, MW power, interaction time and the hydrolytic removal efficiencies, and an integrative equation was generalized quantitively. Rapid and complete removal 100 mg/L of spiramycin was achieved after 8 min of reaction with 1.0 g/L of STA under 200 W of MW irradiation, comparing to 30.1% by MW irradiation or 15.9% by STA alone. The synergetic effects of STA and MW irradiation were originated from the dissociated-proton catalysis by STA and the dipolar rotation heating effect of MW. STA performed much better than the mineral acid H2SO4 under MW, due to the much stronger Brönsted acidity and higher Hammett acidity. After 8 min, 98.0% of antibacterial potency was also reduced. The m/z 558.8614 fragment (P1) and m/z 448.1323 fragment (P2) were identified as the primary products, which were formed by breaking glucosidic bonds and losing mycarose and forosamine for P1 and further mycaminose moiety for P2. Finally, production wastewater with 433 mg/L of spiramycin was effectively treated using this thermal-acid hydrolytic method. Spiramycin and its antibacterial potency both dropped to 0 after 6 min. The potency drop was supposed from the losing of mycarose and/or forosamine. To decrease both the concentration of spiramycin and its antibacterial potency, combinedly using STA and MW was suggested in this work to break down the structural bonds of the functional groups rather than to destroy the whole antibiotic molecules. It is promising for pretreating spiramycin-contained production wastewater to mitigate both the antibiotic and its antibacterial potency.

Rapid industrialization in China during the last three decades has resulted in widespread contamination of Cd in agricultural soils. A considerable proportion of the rice grain grown in some areas of southern China has Cd concentrations exceeding the Chinese food limit, raising widespread concern regarding food safety. In this review, we summarize rice grain Cd concentrations in national Chinese markets and in field surveys from contaminated areas, and analyze the potential health risk associated with increased dietary Cd intake. For subsistence rice farmers living in some contaminated areas of southern China who mainly consume locally-produced Cd-contaminated rice, their estimated dietary Cd intake is now comparable to that for the population in the region of Japan where the Itai-Itai disease was first reported. Interventions must be taken urgently to reduce Cd intake for these farmers. We also analyze i) the main reasons causing elevated grain Cd concentrations in southern China, ii) the dominant biogeochemical processes controlling the solubility of Cd in paddy soils, and iii) molecular mechanisms for the uptake and translocation of Cd in rice plants. Based on these analyses, we propose a number of countermeasures to address soil Cd contamination, including i) mitigation of Cd transfer from paddy soils to rice grain, and ii) intervention in those farmers who consume home-grown Cd-contaminated rice. Liming to increase soil pH to 6.5 and gene editing biotechnology are effective strategies to decrease Cd accumulation in rice grain. For these local farmers with high-Cd exposure risk, local governments should monitor the Cd concentration in their home-grown rice and exchange those high-Cd rice with low-Cd rice in order to reduce their dietary Cd intake.

Black carbon (BC) aerosol emitted in incomplete combustion processes is known for causing warming in the climate system also poses serious health issues. Identification of the sources of BC is essential for the development of mitigation strategies to regulate their effects in changing climate. Among different observational and analytical techniques currently available, source apportionment methods based on optical measurements are relatively simple. For example, ‘Aethalometer model’ was developed based on Aethalometer observations. However, there are a few limitations with this model arising from assumption of wavelength and angstrom exponent pairs. We have developed an empirical method which also relies on Aethalometer observations named as ‘Two alpha method’ which assumes angstrom exponent from fossil fuel as 1 and estimates bio-mass fraction and angstrom exponent for bio-mass burning. This method has been applied to Aethalometer observations from five different locations (rural, semi-urban and urban) over Indian sub-continent to quantify sources of BC. Fossil fuel is found to be the major source of BC (∼70%) irrespective of the location. Collocated measurements of Carbon Monoxide (CO) over rural site correlated well with derived bio-mass fraction. Results from this study demonstrated the capabilities of empirical method and shall provide spatio-temporal variability in sources of BC if applied to more locations.

Little is known about the impacts of maternal exposure to acute episodes of outdoor air pollution, such as that resulting from wildfires, on obstetric and neonatal outcomes. This systematic review aims to synthesise the existing literature exploring the relationship between maternal exposure to short-to medium-term changes in outdoor air quality and obstetric and neonatal outcomes.A systematic search of peer-reviewed articles using PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, ProQuest, GreenFILE and Scopus was conducted in January 2018 using selected search terms. Quality of included studies were assessed using the Newcastle Ottawa Scale.Eleven studies were included; eight assessed the impact of maternal exposure to air pollution exacerbation events, such as wildfires, oil well fires and volcanic eruptions, and three assessed the impact of improvement events, such as the 2018 Beijing Olympics and closure of industrial activities, on obstetric and neonatal outcomes. Studies were highly heterogenous in methodology. Six studies found a significant association between acute changes in air quality and markers of fetal growth restriction, while two did not. Three studies found an adverse association between acute changes in air quality and markers of gestational maturity, and one did not.Overall, there is some evidence that maternal exposure to acute changes in air quality of short-to medium-term duration increases the risk of fetal growth restriction and preterm birth. The relationship for other adverse obstetric or neonatal outcomes is less clear.
