Sinorhizobium meliloti 1021 Exopolysaccharide as a Flocculant Improving Chromium(III) Oxide Removal from Aqueous Solutions

Chromium(III) oxide is an amphoteric, dark green solid. This most stable dye is widely used in construction and ceramic industries as well as in painting. In this study, the attempt is made to determine flocculating properties of exopolysaccharide (EPS) synthesized by the bacteria Sinorhizobium meliloti 1021, which would increase the efficiency of chromium(III) oxide removal from sewages and wastewaters. The conditions under which EPS is the most effective destabilizing component of chromium(III) oxide suspension have been determined too. In order to characterize the structure of electric double layer formed at the solid/supporting electrolyte (EPS) solution interface, electrokinetic potential measurements and potentiometric titration were performed. The EPS amount adsorbed on the chromium(III) oxide surface as a solution pH function was also measured. Moreover, the stability of Cr₂O₃suspension in the absence and presence of S. meliloti 1021 EPS was estimated. The pooled analysis of all obtained results showed that EPS causes chromium(III) oxide suspension destabilization in the whole examined pH range. The largest change in the system stability before and after the polymer addition was observed at pH 9. It is probable that under these conditions bridging flocculation occurs in the examined system.

Green Infrastructure (GI) practices have been identified as a sustainable method of managing stormwater over the years. Due to the increasing popularity of GI as an integrated urban water management strategy, most of the current catchment modeling tools incorporate these practices, as built-in modules. GI practices are also viewed as economically viable methods of stormwater management when compared to conventional approaches. Therefore, cost-benefit analysis or economics of GI are also emerging as obligatory components of modeling tools. Since these tools are regularly upgraded with latest advancements in the field, an assessment of tools for modeling stormwater management and economic aspects of GI practices is vital to developing them into more sophisticated tools. This review has undergone a three-phase process starting with 20 identified modeling tools available in the literature followed by a detailed review of a selection of ten most recent and popular modeling tools, based on their accessibility. The last phase of the review process is a comparison of the ten modeling tools along with their different attributes. The major aim of this review is to provide readers with the fundamental knowledge of different modeling tools currently available in the field, which will assist them with screening for a model, according to their requirements from the number of tools available. A secondary aim is to provide future research directions on developing more comprehensive tools for GI modeling, and recommendations have been presented.

The Park River watershed (PRW), a sub-basin of the Lower Connecticut River watershed, has experienced increased urbanization over the last century as the city of Hartford and its surrounding towns have grown and developed. We present watershed-wide and outflow scale maps of the trace metals Cd, Cu, Zn, and Pb to determine patterns of contamination in fine (<63 μm) stream sediment. Results are compared to established sediment quality guidelines (SQG) and probable effect concentrations (PEC) for each metal. Throughout the watershed, higher concentrations of trace metals are observed in the more urbanized south branch of the PRW. In this sub-basin, there are more industries that use, and waste, metals in their manufacturing processes that contribute to acutely high concentrations of metals in the fine bedload sediments. Impervious surfaces are examined as well in the context of the entire watershed. While an increase in metals can be attributed to an increase in impervious surfaces, these increases do not generally exceed SQGs and PECs. Two focused mapping studies were conducted at the storm water outflow of the West Hartford Landfill and the Trout Brook Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO). The purpose of these studies was to analyze the local effects of natural stream features such as channel bar deposits next to the outfalls. We determined that the sediment directly below the two outfalls often exceeded the PEC, while the accumulated sediment around the channel bar deposits was not contaminated beyond background stream levels. We believe mapping at both the small (watershed) and large (outfall) scale can be helpful in future urban studies to determine the extent of trace metal sediment contamination in both channelized and natural sections and may provide a useful method for sediment mitigation endeavors.

Soil pollution with trace elements is a growing problem with serious environmental impacts and developing strategies to reduce those impacts is a high priority. The objectives of this study were to assess the role of sulfur (S) in reducing the phytotoxic effects of copper (Cu) and the appearance of oxidative stress due to excess Cu in the growth medium and to assess the potential of guinea grass for Cu phytoremediation. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, where the forage grass Panicum maximum cv. Tanzânia was grown with a nutrient solution containing combinations of three S concentrations (0.1, 2, and 4 mmol L⁻¹) and four Cu concentrations (0.3, 100, 500, and 1,000 μmol L⁻¹) using a 3 × 4 factorial design in complete randomized blocks with four replicates. The following variables were measured: shoot and root dry mass production, leaf and tiller number, S and Cu concentrations in diagnostic leaves and roots, H₂O₂, lipid peroxidation, and proline levels in the diagnostic leaves. Very high Cu availability (1,000 μmol L⁻¹) that resulted in Cu concentration higher than 60 mg kg⁻¹in diagnostic leaves caused more than 50 % reduction in shoot and root dry mass production about 30–40 % in the number of leaves and tillers around 20 % increase in lipid peroxidation and more than 10 times increase in proline production. Plants properly fed with S showed mitigation to Cu toxicity. Guinea grass showed promise as an agent in the phytoremediation of Cu-polluted areas.

Alkalisation of soil by dust pollution from a cement plant was assumed to be the principal cause of changes in heavy metal uptake and allocation between hybrid aspen (Populus tremula × Populus tremuloides Michx.) compartments. Emission of over 40 years of alkaline dust (pH 12.3–12.6) into the atmosphere had resulted in an increase of pH and an elevated concentration of total heavy metals in the upper layer of the soil (0–30 cm), which is considerable even 14 years after dust pollution has stopped. The accumulation and allocation of heavy metals in stem, shoot and leaves varied between themselves and between the trees from polluted and unpolluted plantations depending more on the mobility of elements and pH than element concentrations in the alkaline soil. High levels of heavy metals in the soil do not mean similar concentrations and ratios in plants growing in contaminated soil.

Pharmaceutical agents, like diclofenac and acetaminophen, are sold without prescription leading to excessive use. These agents may reach water bodies through various routes and attain significant concentrations, posing a risk to hydrobiont health. Diverse studies have shown that during the biotransformation of these compounds, reactive metabolites and reactive oxygen species are produced which induce oxidative stress and damage to diverse biomolecules. However, toxicity studies that assess the effects of a mixture of contaminants are scarce, being very important as this is how they are actually in the environment. The present study aimed to evaluate the oxidative stress induced by mixture of diclofenac and acetaminophen on Cyprinus carpio and compare with the effect produced by these pharmaceuticals in isolation. A 96-h sublethal toxicity assay of the tested pharmaceuticals (isolated and in mixture) was performed and the following biomarkers were evaluated: lipid peroxidation, protein carbonyl content, and activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase. The pharmaceuticals evaluated induce oxidative stress on C. carpio in isolated form and as a mixture, but the level of damage being dependent on the organ evaluated as well as the type of toxicant and form of exposure (in isolation or as a mixture).

A comparative study of indicator bacteria concentrations obtained by laboratory analysis of grab samples of storm water, which were collected manually or by automatic samplers, was carried out in two urban catchments. Samples were analyzed for four types of indicator bacteria, total coliforms, Escherichia coli (E. coli), enterococci, and Clostridium perfringens and further documented by measurements of total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity. Analysis of complete data sets (N = 198) indicated no statistically significant differences in the geometric means of all the constituent samples collected automatically or manually, but there were some small differences between the results produced by the two sampling methods applied. Total coliform concentrations were positively biased in samples collected by automatic samplers, but for the three remaining indicator bacteria (E. coli, enterococci, and C. perfringens), the opposite was true. Risk of sample cross-contamination in automatic samplers was assessed in the laboratory by sampling consecutively synthetic storm water with high and low concentrations of E. coli and enterococci. The first low-concentration samples preceded by high-concentration samples were cross-contaminated and the measured concentrations were positively biased. This cross-contamination was explained by storm-water residue in the sampling line. Such a residue remained in place even after line purging by compressed air, and its mass depended on the sampling line length (tested up to 5 m), as verified by measurements in the laboratory. The study findings should be helpful for improving field protocols for indicator bacteria sampling.

The agricultural destination of sewage sludge promotes the return of organic matter and nutrients to the soil, prevents contamination and degradation of hydric resources, and contributes to food and fiber production. In Brazil, the Resolution of the National Environment Council (Conama 375/06) and in the State of Paraná the Resolution of the State Environment Cabinet (Sema 021/09) established criteria and procedures for agricultural use of sewage sludge seeking to avoid risk to public health and the environment. This case study attempts to present the results of the destination of the sludge generated in the Sludge Management Units (SMU) in Curitiba Metropolitan Region (CMR), State of Paraná, Brazil from 2007 to 2010. Data analysis of agronomic parameters and inorganic substances (metals) of 99 batches of sewage sludge destined for agricultural use, based on 239 agronomic projects, was performed. The comparison of the characteristics of the batches generated in anaerobic and aerobic SMUs of CMR was also conducted. During the study, 88,166 t of sludge (33,404 dry tons) were destined for 2,288 ha of agricultural areas. The sludge provided 88 % of the lime, 74 % of N, 73 % of P₂O₅, and 35 % of K₂O for fertilizing the corn, soybean, bean, oat, wheat, green manure, and in the implementation and postharvest of stone fruit trees. The 80 benefited farmers reduced expenses with fertilizers and limestone, saving an average of US$813.45 per ha.

In this work, a mesoporous carbon material was modified by nitrogen atom by two different ways. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results show that the N atoms at the surface mainly exist in pyridine- and pyridone-like forms (around 80 % in atom ratio). The adsorption capacity of phenol and nicotine on mesoporous carbon and two N-containing mesoporous carbons was studied through adsorption isotherms. The adsorption isotherms were interpreted by three models (Freundlich, Langmuir, and Sips equations). Heat-flow microcalorimetry in liquid phase was used to determine the bonding strength between the organic pollutants and the surface of the adsorbents. In addition, the possibility of regeneration of adsorbents was investigated by temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) technique. The obtained values of differential heats and isotherms showed the heterogeneous properties of the mesoporous carbon materials. Comparing the different results obtained from the experiments, the surface area is a key factor for the adsorption of phenol and nicotine in water. The introduction of N improved the adsorption of phenol but did not affect the adsorption of nicotine.

Methane (CH₄) formation in wastewater treatment is linked to long residence times under anaerobic conditions such as those in sewers and primary treatment units. Emissions of this methane to the atmosphere can occur under turbulent flows and, potentially, during aeration in an activated sludge plant. An online, 8-week monitoring campaign of CH₄emissions and operational conditions was conducted to study emissions from a full-scale nitrifying activated sludge plant (ASP). Significant emissions were found throughout the aerated lane, with the highest values observed two thirds down the lane. Emissions had high diurnal and spatial variability, with values ranging from 0.3 to 24 g CH₄/h. No significant correlations were found between dissolved oxygen, aeration or influent loads. The results suggest that emissions are linked to upstream process conditions, with potential for methane generation in-lane due periods of limited oxygen availability. The dynamic oxygen profile observed suggests that aerobic and anoxic conditions coexist in the lane, leading to limited oxygen diffusion from the bulk liquid to the inner regions of the floc where anoxic/anaerobic layers may allow methanogenic microorganisms to survive. The average emission factor was 0.07 % of removed chemical oxygen demand, giving a total of 668 kg CH₄/year and 14,000 CO₂equivalents/year. The operational carbon associated with the energy requirements of the ASP increased by 5 %. With emerging legislation requiring the reporting of greenhouse gas emissions, the carbon impact may be significant, particularly as the industry moves towards a carbon-reducing future. Therefore, an adequate profiling of full-scale emissions is critical for future proofing existing treatment technologies.
