We investigated physiological responses including calcification, photosynthesis and alterations to polar metabolites, in the scleractinian coral Stylophora pistillata exposed to different concentrations of polyethylene microplastics. Results showed that at high plastic concentrations (50 particles/mL nominal concentration) the photosynthetic efficiency of photosystem II in the coral symbiont was affected after 4 weeks of exposure. Both moderate and high (5 and 50 particles/mL nominal) concentrations of microplastics caused subtle but significant alterations to metabolite profiles of coral, as determined by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Specifically, exposed corals were found to have increased levels of phosphorylated sugars and pyrimidine nucleobases that make up nucleotides, scyllo-inositol and a region containing overlapping proline and glutamate signals, compared to control animals. Together with the photo-physiological stress response observed and previously published literature, these findings support the hypothesis that microplastics disrupt host-symbiont signaling and that corals respond to this interference by increasing signaling and chemical support to the symbiotic zooxanthellae algae. These findings are also consistent with increased mucus production in corals exposed to microplastics described in previous studies. Considering the importance of coral reefs to marine ecosystems and their sensitivity to anthropogenic stressors, more research is needed to elucidate coral response mechanisms to microplastics under realistic exposure conditions.

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as an alternative fuel is increasingly used in mainland China, few reports are however available about emissions from LPG-fueled vehicles. In this study, 26 LPG-fueled taxis in Guangzhou, south China were tested using a chassis dynamometer to obtain their emission factors of nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under idle and cruising (10–60 km h⁻¹) modes. The emission factors of NOₓ on average increased with speed from 4.13 g kg-fuel⁻¹ at idling to 71.1 g kg-fuel⁻¹ at 60 km h⁻¹ at a slope of 10.6 g kg-fuel⁻¹ per 10 km h⁻¹ increase in speed. Alkanes were the most abundant (71.9%) among the VOCs in the exhaust, followed by alkenes (25.2%), ethyne (2.7%), and aromatic species (0.2%). Emission factors of VOCs at idling averaged 8.24 g kg-fuel⁻¹, higher than that of 6.23–7.36 g kg-fuel⁻¹ when cruising at 10–60 km h⁻¹, but their ozone formation potentials (OFPs) were lower at idling (15.8 g kg-fuel⁻¹) than under cruising (19.1–23.8 g kg-fuel⁻¹) largely due to higher emission of more reactive alkenes under cruising mode. Emissions of both NOx and VOCs increased significantly with mileages. Measured emission factors of NOₓ and reactive VOCs in this study suggested that replacing the gasoline-powered taxis with the LPG-fueled taxis with LPG-gasoline bi-fuel engines and no efficient after-treatment devices would not benefit in reducing the emissions of ozone precursors, and strengthening the emission control for LPG vehicles with dedicated LPG engines and after-treatment converters, as did in Hong Kong, could further benefit in reducing the emission of photochemically active species when using LPG as alternative fuels.

Inflammation and the coagulation cascade are considered to be the potential mechanisms of ambient particulate matter (PM) exposure-induced adverse cardiovascular events. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and fibrinogen are arguably the four most commonly assayed markers to reflect the relationships of PM with inflammation and blood coagulation. This review summarized and quantitatively analyzed the existing studies reporting short- and long-term associations of PM₂.₅(PM with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm)/PM₁₀ (PM with an aerodynamic diameter≤10 μm) with important inflammation and blood coagulation markers (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8, fibrinogen). We reviewed relevant studies published up to July 2020, using three English databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase) and two Chinese databases (Wang-Fang, China National Knowledge Infrastructure). The OHAT tool, with some modification, was applied to evaluate risk of bias. Meta-analyses were conducted with random-effects models for calculating the pooled estimate of markers. To assess the potential effect modifiers and the source of heterogeneity, we conducted subgroup analyses and meta-regression analyses where appropriate. The assessment and correction of publication bias were based on Begg’s and Egger’s test and “trim-and-fill” analysis. We identified 44 eligible studies. For short-term PM exposure, the percent change of a 10 μg/m³ PM₂.₅ increase on TNF-α and fibrinogen was 3.51% (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.21%, 5.81%) and 0.54% (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.21%, 0.86%) respectively. We also found a significant short-term association between PM₁₀ and fibrinogen (percent change = 0.17%, 95% CI: 0.04%, 0.29%). Overall analysis showed that long-term associations of fibrinogen with PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀ were not significant. Subgroup analysis showed that long-term associations of fibrinogen with PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀ were significant only found in studies conducted in Asia. Our findings support significant short-term associations of PM with TNF-α and fibrinogen. Future epidemiological studies should address the role long-term PM exposure plays in inflammation and blood coagulation markers level change.

Metagenomics has provided the discovery of genes and metabolic pathways involved in the degradation of xenobiotics. Some microorganisms can metabolize these compounds, potentiating phytoremediation in association with plant. This study aimed to study the metagenome and the occurrence of atrazine degradation genes in rhizospheric soils of the phytoremediation species Inga striata and Caesalphinea ferrea. The genera of microorganisms predominant in the rhizospheric soils of I. striata and C. ferrea were Mycobacterium, Conexibacter, Bradyrhizobium, Solirubrobacter, Rhodoplanes, Streptomyces, Geothrix, Gaiella, Nitrospira, and Haliangium. The atzD, atzE, and atzF genes were detected in the rhizospheric soils of I. striata and atzE and atzF in the rhizospheric soils of C. ferrea. The rhizodegradation by both tree species accelerates the degradation of atrazine residues, eliminating toxic effects on plants highly sensitive to this herbicide. This is the first report for the species Agrobacterium rhizogenes and Candidatus Muproteobacteria bacterium and Micromonospora genera as atrazine degraders.

Sludge from a groundwater treatment plant was used to prepare biochar by pyrolysis. The Fe–Mn rich biochar was used to activate percarbonate for the remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated aquatic sediments. Results showed that the sludge–derived biochar (SBC) produced at a pyrolysis temperature of 700 °C was the most effective in activating percarbonate, which exhibited significant oxidative removal of PAHs. PAHs degradation took place via a Fenton-like oxidation manners, contributed from the Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺ and Mn³⁺/Mn²⁺ redox pairs, and achieved the highest degradation efficiency of 87% at pH₀ 6.0. Reactions between oxygenated functional groups of biochar and H₂O₂ generated of O₂•– and HO• radicals in abundance under neutral and alkaline pH was responsible for the catalytic degradation of PAHs. Our results provided new insights into the environmental applications of SBC for the green sustainable remediation of organics-contaminated sediments and aided in reduction of associated environmental and health risk.

Several populations of the amphipod, Hyalella azteca, have developed resistance to pyrethroid insecticides due to non-target exposure, but the dominance of the resistance trait is unknown. The current study investigated the dominance level of point mutations in natural populations of insecticide-resistant H. azteca and determined whether H. azteca from different clades with and without resistant alleles can hybridize and produce viable offspring. A parent generation (P₀) of non-resistant homozygous wild type H. azteca was crossbred with pyrethroid-resistant homozygous mutant animals and the tolerance of the filial 1 (F₁) generation to the pyrethroid insecticide, permethrin, was measured. Then the genotypes of the F₁ generation was examined to assure heterozygosity. The resistant parents had permethrin LC₅₀ values that ranged from 52 to 82 times higher than the non-resistant animals and both crossbreeding experiments produced heterozygous hybrid offspring that had LC₅₀ values similar to the non-resistant H. azteca parent. Dominance levels calculated for each of the crosses showed values close to 0, confirming that the L925I and L925V mutations were completely recessive. The lack of reproduction by hybrids of the C x D breeding confirmed that these clades are reproductively isolated and therefore introgression of adaptive alleles across these clades is unlikely. Potential evolutionary consequences of this selection include development of population bottlenecks, which may arise leading to fitness costs and reduced genetic diversity of H. azteca.

Fulvic acid (FA) significantly influences the bioavailability and fate of heavy metals in environments, while its acid-base characters and metal binding processes are still unclear. Here, spectroscopic techniques combined with multiple models (e.g., NICA-Donnan model) and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D COS) were applied to explore the proton and copper binding properties of FA sub-fractions (FA3-FA13). The charge densities, average contents of carboxylic and phenolic groups, average dissociation constants pKa1 and pKa2 of sub-fractions ranged 0–16 meq∙g∙C−1, 5.03–9.58 meq∙g∙C−1, 2.52–4.67 meq∙g∙C−1, 4.15–4.33 and 8.52–9.72, respectively. FA sub-fractions had a relatively narrow distribution of carboxyl group and a broad distribution of phenolic group. FA sub-fractions also exhibited roughly two phenolic hydroxyl groups per every 1–3 phenyl rings. Differential absorbance spectra (DAS) derived Gaussian bands were associated to the inter-chromophore interactions, the changes of molecular conformations and functional groups with copper addition. Differential spectra slopes (DSlope275-295&325-375) were more significant with higher copper concentration and copper amounts bonded to carboxylic groups. UV–Vis and fluorescence spectra with 2D heterospectral COS revealed the copper binding heterogeneities and sequential orders of chromophores and fluorophores, quantitatively confirming by the order of conditional stability constants (log KCu: 4.64–5.56). Salicylic-/polyhydroxyphenolic, hydroxyl and amino groups were strongly associated to the basic units for fluorophores. Sequential changes followed the order of humic-like→fulvic-like materials for FA3/FA5, humic-like→fulvic-like→tryptophan-like materials for FA7, and humic-like→tryptophan-like→fulvic-like→tyrosine-like materials for FA9/FA13. Spectroscopic techniques combined with various models (especially for 2D COS) are beneficial to elucidate the binding heterogeneity and sensitivity for metal-organic matters at the functional group level.

Heavy metal contaminants in Mirror Peninsula, East Antarctica, have rarely been studied and the source and influencing factors are poorly understood. We sampled a grid of 189 topsoil samples from Mirror Peninsula and analyzed the concentrations of Zn, Cu, U, Cr, Ga, Pb, Hg, Se and As; we also calculated the chemical index of alteration (CIA), a proxy of weathering. The results show that the distributions of Cr, Ga, Cu, and Zn are associated with weathering; the distributions of As and Pb are related to vehicle use and unloading activities at the wharfs, respectively; and the distribution of Hg is likely associated with both anthropogenic impacts and biological activity. The contamination level of these heavy metals in Mirror Peninsula is relatively low and within the controllable range. Both weathering processes and anthropogenic impacts can cause the enrichment of heavy metals; thus reliable source apportionment is crucial in studying heavy metal enrichment and contamination.

Olusegun, Sunday J. | Mohallem, Nelcy D.S.
Kaolinite supported CoFe₂O₄ (KCF) was synthesized and employed to adsorb doxycycline (DOX), an antibiotic and Congo red (CR), a dye from aqueous solution. The prepared KCF nanocomposite was treated in a muffle furnace at 300, 500 and 700 °C, and thereafter characterized. X-ray diffractogram revealed structural damage of kaolinite and appearance of distinct peaks of CoFe₂O₄ with an increase in calcination temperature, while transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles were supported on the lamellar surface of kaolinites. Comparative adsorption mechanism of the two targeted contaminants showed that adsorption of DOX was influenced by hydrogen bond and n-π interaction, while that of CR was due to hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bond. However, the adsorption of the two contaminants was best fitted to the isotherm that was proposed by Langmuir, with a monolayer maximum adsorption capacity of 400 mg g⁻¹ at 333 K for DOX, and 547 mg g⁻¹ at 298 K for CR. The removal of DOX from aqueous solution was favored by an increase in temperature (endothermic), while that of CR was exothermic. Thermodynamics studies confirmed that the adsorption of the two contaminants is feasible and spontaneous. The presence of natural organic matter (NOM) did not affect the removal of the two contaminants. Regeneration and reusability study showed that KCF is economically viable. Therefore, introducing inorganic particles like cobalt ferrite into the matrix of kaolinites provides a composite with promising adsorption capacity.

In this study, the Songgang River (SR) was selected as a typical tributary that is heavily polluted by rapid urbanization and industrialization. The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) distribution at five representative sampling sites from different urban functional areas was studied. The chemical and physical properties and spatial and vertical distribution of PAHs in sediments were investigated. PAH source identification and the ecological risks of the sediments were evaluated. The results suggested that the industrial zone and dense residential and commercial areas were the most contaminated areas of the SR, as the chemical and physical properties of total organic carbon content in sediments was the highest at the dense residential and commercial areas (0.1–4.5%); however, the acid volatile sulfide, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus contents were the highest in the industrial zone, with ranges of 700.0–1618.4 mg/kg dw, 22.4–3543.9 mg/kg dw, and 82.3–4550.7 mg/kg dw, respectively. The spatial distribution of residual PAHs in the sediment cores showed a wide variation among different urban functional areas, and the vertical characterization (0–300 cm) depicted a significant decreasing trend with depth and with an abrupt increase at 180 cm. The concentration of ∑16 PAHs ranged from 208.7 to 7709.8 ng/g dw, with the highest concentrations obtained in the industrial zone. The low molecular weight-PAHs (153–6720 ng/g dw) were predominant in the sediments. Furthermore, there were combined sources (biomass burning: 40.3%; fossil fuel combustion: 25.5%; mixed source: 21.5%; oil pollution: 12.7%) and a long term accumulation effect, with anthropogenic activities and industrial pollution as the major contributing sources. The concentrations of Nap, Acy, Ace, Flu, and Ant exceeded the lower limit of the sediment quality criteria, and higher toxic equivalent concentration values of the total carcinogenic PAHs were observed nearby the midstream of the SR, which may cause adverse biological effects and implies a need for regular monitoring.
