Impact of environmental variables on the reduction of nitric acid by proxies for volatile organic compounds emitted by motor vehicles

Recent work has identified nitric acid (HNO3) as a potential precursor of nitrous acid (HONO), which is an important source of oxidants that regulate ozone and particulate pollution. Recent work in our laboratory has indicated that the reduction of HNO3 to HONO can occur homogeneously in the presence of surrogates for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by motor vehicles. This study focuses on the impact of environmental variables on the rate of formation of HONO in this process. The observed base case (25.0 °C and ∼20.0% relative humidity (RH)) HONO formation rate was 0.54 ± 0.09 ppb h−1, values comparable to enhancements observed in HONO during morning rush hour in Houston, TX. The rate was enhanced at lower temperatures of ∼20.0 °C, but the rate remained statistically similar (1σ) for experiments conducted at temperatures of 25 °C, 30 °C, and 35 °C. The assumption that multiple reactive components of the VOC mixture react with HNO3 is supported by this observation, and the relative importance of each reactive species in the reaction may vary with temperature. The enhanced rate at lower temperatures could make the proposed reaction mechanism more important at night. The formation rate of HONO does not change substantially when initial HNO3 concentration is varied between 400 and 4600 ppt, suggesting that the concentration of reactive VOCs was the limiting factor. The reduction of HNO3 to HONO appears not to occur heterogeneously on the aerosol surfaces tested. The presence of ∼120 ppb of ammonia has no observable impact on the reaction. However, it is likely that UV irradiation (λ = 350 nm) decreases the formation rate of HONO either by consuming the reactive VOCs involved or by directly interfering with the reaction. The “renoxification” of less reactive HNO3 to more reactive HONO has significant implications for daytime ozone and particulate pollution.

This paper contributes for the first time the seasonal mass size distribution of atmospheric aerosols and their possible health implications in a rural area of eastern central India. Size-segregated atmospheric aerosols were collected from July 2012 to June 2013 at rural site near Mahanadi riverside basin of Rajim (20° 59′N and 81°55′E), Chhattisgarh, India using nine-stage cascade impactor. Bimodal size distribution was found with stable peaks at 0.4–0.7 μm (fine mode) and 4.4–5.8 μm (coarse mode) during monsoon, winter, spring and summer seasons at study site. The mass median aerodynamic diameter of total impactor particle sizes was shifted from lower particle size in winter to higher particle size in summer. High concentrations of size-segregated aerosols were found during winter season with 45%, 55% and 36% of PM2.5–10, PM2.5 and PM1, respectively of the total PM10 aerosol. One unique observation was that the mass concentration of particulate matter increases abruptly in May and June during summer season, which was due to in situ burning of rice crop residues. The concentrations of upper respiratory tract and lungs particles were found to be highest during winter whereas respiratory airways particles showed maxima during summer season. The highest numbers of unfavorable days (i.e. value of air quality index > 101) were also observed during winter followed by summer season. The significant positive correlations found among particle in fine size bins (<0.43–2.5 μm) during winter and summer season was mainly due to the biomass burning activities during the study period at a rural site in eastern central India.

The Gironde Estuary is known for its historic poly-metallic contamination, leading to levels of Cd in oysters Crassostrea gigas above the human consumption limit. However, since 25years, Cd concentrations progressively decreased in the estuary and the question is raised if the same evolution occurred in the North Médoc salt marshes. In this aim, we analyzed 12 metals in juveniles of oysters transplanted from a hatchery on a 12months period in 2 salt marshes. Moreover, the comparison of four metals already measured 13years ago was conducted.The major results showed an overall decrease of the metals in the salt marshes, with a significant decrease of Cd reaching 80% compared to the Gironde estuary where it occurs for only 50% between 2001 and 2014. The concentrations in 2014 remained below the human consumption threshold, suggesting the possibility to produce again oysters in the salt marshes.

This study documents the occurrence of microplastic (<5mm), mesoplastics (5–20mm) and macroplastic (>20mm) in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), a common and economically important species of marine fish in Norway. Fish stomachs (n=302) were examined from six different locations along the coast of Norway. Three percent of the individual stomachs contained items identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) as synthetic polymers. Bergen City Harbour was a hotspot with 27% of the cod examined found to contain plastic. Polyester was the most frequently detected polymer. All bar one of the stomachs that contained plastic were full of organic stomach content, suggesting a plastic gut clearance rate similar to the ingested food. It is proposed that stomach fullness is an important metric in order to avoid underestimations when assessing the levels of microplastic ingested by fish.

Concentrations of 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air–seawater interface were measured over 1year in the coastal region of Incheon, South Korea. Most individual PAHs and total PAHs in air displayed statistically significant negative correlations with temperature, but not significant in seawater. Less hydrophobic compounds with three rings were at or near equilibrium in summer, while PAHs with four to six rings were in disequilibrium in all seasons, with higher fugacity gradients in colder seasons and for more hydrophobic compounds. Differently from fugacity gradients, the highest net fluxes occurred for some three- and four-ring PAHs showing the highest atmospheric concentrations. Net gaseous exchange, which was higher in winter, occurred from air to seawater with an annual cumulative flux of 2075μg/m2/year (for Σ15PAHs), indicating that atmospheric PAHs in this region, originating from coal/biomass combustion, can deteriorate the quality of seawater and sediment.

Squids are active and opportunistic predators that feed on a wide range of prey. Their active movements in the water column and their voracity promote a high consumption of food. In the pelagic environment off Ecuador, marine pollution is characterized by plastic debris with a mainland origin, including plastics trash of fishing gears. The objective of this work was to describe the presence of plastic remains in the stomach contents of Dosidicus gigas caught off the coast of Ecuador. Results demonstrated that 12% of the stomachs contained plastic remains. These plastics were identified as multifilament of polyethylene lines and polyvinyl chloride remains. Findings of this work could be related to an increase in the discharge of solid materials in the water column, increasing the probability to be ingested by the jumbo squid.

Sponges are important constituents of coral reef ecosystems, including those around the Arabian Peninsula. Despite their importance, our knowledge on demosponge diversity in this area is insufficient to recognize, for example, faunal changes caused by anthropogenic disturbances. We here report the first assessment of demosponge molecular biodiversity from Arabia, with focus on the Saudi Arabian Red Sea, based on mitochondrial and nuclear ribosomal molecular markers gathered in the framework of the Sponge Barcoding Project. We use a rapid molecular screening approach on Arabian demosponge collections and analyze results in comparison against published material in terms of biodiversity. We use a variable region of 28S rDNA, applied for the first time in the assessment of demosponge molecular diversity. Our data constitutes a solid foundation for a future more comprehensive understanding of sponge biodiversity of the Red Sea and adjacent waters.

The Mondego River estuary, located on the North Atlantic Ocean Ecoregion, is a basin affected by agricultural run-off with increasing signs of eutrophication. We evaluated the amounts and distribution of 56 priority pesticides belonging to distinct categories (insecticides, herbicides and fungicides). Temporal trends were considered and a total of 42 surface water samples were collected between 2010 and 2011. More than 55% of the GC–MS/MS-quantified pesticides were above the maximum amounts established by the European Directives (98/83/EC and 2013/39/EU). Based on the concentration addition (CA) and independent action (IA) models, we used a two-tiered approach to assess the hazard of the pesticide mixture, at the maximum concentration found, reflecting a potential risk. Short-term exposure using Artemia salina indicated a significant toxic effect where the locomotion of the animals was clearly affected.

Gelatinous zooplankton are known for their capacity to excrete copious amounts of mucus that can be utilized by other organisms. The release of mucus is exacerbated by stressful conditions. Despite the recognized importance of cnidarian mucus to production and material flux in marine ecosystems, the role of gelatinous zooplankton in influencing the fate of oil spills is unknown. In this study we used laboratory experiments to observe the influence of mucus from the moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) on the aggregation and degradation of crude oil. The results show that jellyfish swimming in a dispersed solution of oil droplets produced copious amounts of mucus and the mucus aggregates that were shed by the animals contained 26 times more oil than the surrounding water. Incubation experiments showed that hydrocarbon degrading bacteria cell densities more than doubled in the presence of mucus and after 14days, resulted in a significant increase in oil degradation. These results suggest that jellyfish can aggregate dispersed oil droplets and embed them within a matrix that favors hydrocarbon degrading bacteria. While this study lends support to the hypothesis that the presence of gelatinous zooplankton can impact oil spills large scale mesocosm studies will be needed to fully quantify the influence on a natural system.

Water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and biota samples were collected from the Taehwa River Estuary to determine the distributions, partitioning, and bioaccumulation of arsenicals. Six forms of As were quantitated by the use of HPLC-ICP/MS. As was found mainly near urban and industrial areas, and inorganic AsV was the predominant As form in both water and SPM. Particulate arsenicals were found at the greatest concentrations in coarse particles (>180μm), followed by medium (30–180μm) and fine (0.45–30μm) particles, in freshwater. Arsenical concentrations were similar across the three particle fractions in saltwater. Field-based distribution coefficient (Kd) values for As depended strongly on SPM, with a less robust dependence on salinity. Concentrations of As were greater in macroalgae than in marine animals, such as fishes, bivalves, crabs, shrimps, and gastropods. Overall, the results of the present study provide useful information on the behaviors and fate of arsenicals in an estuarine environment.
