Assessment of natural radioactivity and gamma-ray dose in monazite rich black Sand Beach of Penang Island, Malaysia
2017
Activity concentrations of primordial radionuclides in sand samples collected from the coastal beaches surrounding Penang Island have been measured using conventional γ-ray spectrometry, while in-situ γ-ray doses have been measured through use of a portable radiation survey meter. The mean activity concentrations for 226Ra, 232Th and 40K at different locations were found to be less than the world average values, while the Miami Bay values for 226Ra and 232Th were found to be greater, at 1023±47 and 2086±96Bqkg̶ 1 respectively. The main contributor to radionuclide enrichment in Miami Bay is the presence of monazite-rich black sands. The measured data were compared against literature values and also recommended limits set by the relevant international bodies. With the exception of Miami Bay, considered an elevated background radiation area that would benefit from regular monitoring, Penang island beach sands typically pose no significant radiological risk to the local populace and tourists visiting the leisure beaches.

2017
Salas, P.M. | Sujatha, C.H. | Ratheesh Kumar, C.S. | Cheriyan, Eldhose
Heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cr, Zn, Ni, Pb, Cu, Co and Cd) in the surface sediments of Cochin estuary, Southwest coast of India were analyzed to understand the spatio-temporal variation and contamination status via six sampling campaigns. Pollution indices like enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index and pollution load index inferred that the sediments of the northern arm of the estuary exhibited severe trace metal accumulation. Numerical sediment quality guidelines were applied to assess adverse biological effects of the trace metals, suggesting that occasional biological effect may occur due to Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb. Correlations between metals, organic carbon, silt and clay suggested that both fine grained sediment and organic matter were important carriers for these metals. Multivariate statistics indicated that the sources of Cu and Ni resulted primarily from natural weathering processes, whereas enriched levels of Cd, Cr, Zn and Pb were mainly attributed to anthropogenic activities.

2017
The sinking of the Solar 1 tanker caused serious heavy oil pollution around Guimaras Island, Philippines. In the present study, variations of parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and alkylated PAHs (alkPAHs) in some shellfish were investigated around Guimaras Island and other small islands from 3months to 5years after the spill. The total PAHs and alkPAHs in shellfish were detected in high concentrations at 448 and 33,666ng/g dry weight, respectively, in November 2006. The concentrations of alkPAHs gradually decreased, while the parent PAHs in shellfish degraded more slowly than the alkPAHs, which was likely due to the persistent characteristics of PAHs. The risks based on European Union regulations were insignificant in 2008, but total PAHs in shellfish were still over 8 times higher at the investigated sites in November 2011 than that before the oil spill.

2017
Li, Jing | Li, Fadong
This paper presents a systematic but preliminary study on the levels, sources and risk of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Yellow River estuary by examining 16 priority PAHs listed by the U.S. EPA in four main environmental media (soil, surface water, groundwater and sediment). The concentration of individual PAHs in each medium in the study area was compared with the reported PAH values in China and abroad and to related environmental quality standards. The pollution levels of PAHs were found to be moderate in the soil and sediment, and low in the surface water and groundwater. Wood, coal combustion and petroleum inputs are the main PAH sources in soil and sediment, while petroleum inputs and petroleum combustion are the main PAH sources in surface water and groundwater. This indicates that PAH input caused by the high-speed inflow of external water over a long time has made a definite contribution to the occurrence of PAHs in surface water and groundwater in the study area. Furthermore, the mean value of the sum of the Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk (∑ELCR) exposure to PAHs in all media exceeded the generally acceptable risk level of 1.0E−06 recommended by the USEPA for carcinogenic chemicals, and the relative proportion contributed by DBA to the ∑ELCR was the greatest.

2017
Rizzo, Daniela | Pennetta, Antonio | De Benedetto, Giuseppe E.
Studies on the quality of marine environments in Italy have traditionally favoured heavily impacted areas, such as harbours and industrial areas, while there are few investigations aimed at the evaluation of the presence of organic pollutants in the areas of marine reserve. The aim of this study was to determine endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) in the liver of white seabreams (Diplodus sargus sargus) from the Natural Reserve of Torre Guaceto, Italy. Among EDCs, alkyl-phenols 2,6-DTBP, 2,4-DTBP, OP, and BPA were identified and quantified. The mean concentration of 2,6-DTBP, 2,4-DTBP, OP, and BPA were 2.2, 2.0, 1.2 and 3.6ng/g of liver, respectively, confirming the occurrence and transfer of these organic pollutants in the food web of marine organisms in marine reserves.

2017
Wang, Cuiping | Jia, Weili | Wang, Dong | Song, Zhiguang
Sediments from the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) and the South China Sea (SCS) were analyzed. The low δ13 C values of pentamethylicosane (PMIs) and fatty acids (−81.3 to −85.2‰) were found in only the S-1 sample collected from the GOM, indicating that methanogenic archaea associated with gas hydrate formation contributed to the sediment organic matter. Principle component analysis of fatty acids suggested that similar microbial biomass was found in the S-1, S-9, O-3 and O-5 samples. However, a comparison of the alkanes, fatty acids, and alcohols indicated that the percentage of n-alkan-2-ols in the S-1 sample from the GOM was the highest, while n-alkanes and n-fatty acids were the highest percentages in other samples from the GOM and SCS. This finding suggests that microbial species or the oxidation/reduction environment of the sample site of S-1 were different from those of the other samples. The present study provides a basis for detecting gas hydrate sites on the seafloor of the SCS.

2017
Madeira, Diana | Vinagre, Catarina | Mendonça, Vanessa | Diniz, Mário Sousa
Knowledge on baseline values of stress biomarkers in natural conditions is urgent due to the need of reference values for monitoring purposes. Here we assessed the cellular stress response of the chiton Chaetopleura angulata in situ. Biomarkers commonly used in environmental monitoring (heat shock protein 70kDa, total ubiquitin, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, superoxide-dismutase, lipid peroxidation) were analyzed in the digestive system, gills and muscle of C. angulata, under spring and summer conditions in order to assess seasonal tissue-specific responses. Season had an effect on all targeted organs, especially affecting the digestive system which displayed clear seasonal clusters. The respective Integrated Biomarker Response (IBR) showed a 7.2-fold seasonal difference. Muscle and gills showed similar IBRs between seasons making them appropriate organs to monitor chemical pollution as they were less responsive to seasonal variation. The most stable biomarkers in these organs were ubiquitin and superoxide-dismutase thus being reliable for monitoring purposes.

2017
Zhong, Xiaoxiao | Xu, Guangjian | Xu, Henglong
Ecological parameters based on multiply functional traits have many advantages for monitoring programs by reducing “signal to noise” ratios of observed species data. To identify potential indicators for bioassessment of marine pollution in function space, the functional patterns of protozoan communities and relationships with environmental changes were studied in coastal waters of the Yellow Sea during a 1-year period. The results showed that: (1) the spatial variability in functional trait distributions of the protozoa was significantly associated with changes in environmental variables, especially chemical oxygen demand (COD) and nutrients on spatial scale; (2) the functional traits, especially food resources and feeding type, were significantly correlated with COD and nutrients; and (3) the functional diversity indices were generally related to nutrients or COD. Based on the results, we suggest that the functional traits and diversity indices of protozoan communities may be used as more effective indicators for bioassessment of marine pollution.

2017
Wang, John Y. | Riehl, Kimberly N. | Yang, Shih-Chu | Araújo-Wang, Claryana
The Critically Endangered Taiwanese humpback dolphin (Sousa chinensis taiwanensis) is endemic to inshore and estuarine waters of central western Taiwan. It numbers fewer than 75 individuals, is declining and faces a myriad of human threats. Data from a long-term photo-identification program on these dolphins allowed major injuries to be examined quantitatively. A large proportion (57.7%) of individuals had suffered major human-induced injuries that likely compromised their health, survivorship or reproductive potential and thus, the future of this subspecies. Considering major injuries as “takes”, the injury rate (1.13 dolphins/year) for the population was 8–8.5 times higher than its Potential Biological Removal rate. Observations of new injuries and fishing gear entanglements on several dolphins showed that fisheries continue to be the predominant cause of these major injuries. Unless immediate action is taken to reduce harmful fisheries, extinction is imminent for Taiwan's only endemic dolphin.

2017
Zhu, Hongjun | You, Jiahui | Zhao, Honglei
The time taken for spilt oil to appear firstly at the sea surface and its location are two key issues for emergency response. The underwater spread of oil spill in a shear flow was studied experimentally in a re-circulating water channel. The high speed imaging technology was employed to record the whole transport process of oil spilt from a leak of a submarine pipe to the surface. Based on the experimental results, three underwater transport types are identified, which are single droplet pattern (model A), linear chain pattern (model B) and oil plume pattern (model C), respectively. The pressure difference inside and outside of the leak determines the underwater transport pattern. For single droplet pattern, the transport of oil droplet has two successive stage, namely the accumulation stage and the buoyant droplet stage. When it comes to linear chain pattern, the first stage changes to be the initial jet stage. Besides the initial jet stage and the buoyant droplet stage, oil plume pattern has an intermediate transition stage, namely the plume development stage. During the whole floating process, the pressure difference dominates the initial stage, while droplet buoyancy is the driven force in the rest. The required time for oil droplets to reach the surface is increased with the decreasing of the initial momentum and the increasing of the shear flow velocity. In the buoyance dominated stage, the floating rate of oil droplets is basically unchanged and the horizontal migration rate is similar with the shear flow velocity. Both the break-up and coalescence of oil droplets have two forms, which are single droplet splitting and droplet-column separation for break-up form and turbulence merging and pursuit merging for coalescence form, respectively.
