Species Diversity and Community Structure of Ground-Dwelling Spiders in Unpolluted and Moderately Heavy Metal-Polluted Habitats Полный текст

This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between ground-dwelling spider communities and the degree of soil contamination of heavy metals, Cd and Pb. Six sites were selected according to expected differences in Cd and Pb contamination levels in soil and similarity in vegetation composition. Ground-dwelling spiders were collected monthly in 2003 and 2004 by pitfall trapping. Species diversity of ground-dwelling spiders between unpolluted and moderately polluted sites was not significantly different although the value was higher in the unpolluted site. Species diversity tended to decrease with increasing Pb levels in soil although no statistical significance was obtained. No trend was shown between species diversity and Cd levels in soil. The community structure of ground-dwelling spiders was similar for the two types of sites. Overall ground-dwelling spider communities may be not sensitive enough to discriminate moderate heavy metal contamination levels in soil. However, among the dominant spider families, the composition and structure of Linyphiidae separated unpolluted and moderately polluted sites. Pardosa astrigera and P. laura (Lycosidae) have a potential as heavy metal accumulator indicator species and Oedothorax insulanus (Linyphiidae) has a potential as a heavy metal sentinel indicator species.

An open limestone channel (OLC) was constructed within an existing drain to treat the acidic and metal-rich drainage waters generated from an acid sulfate soil (ASS) catchment. The OLC was constructed downstream of a catchment pump and it consisted of a series of ponds and limestone sections. The accumulation of sediment over the limestone, preventing contact of limestone with acidic water, was the greatest problem impacting the OLC in its first year of operation. The continuous or sporadic operation of the catchment pump (at 120 l/s) was not sufficient to flush sediment from the limestone. The accumulation of large amounts of sediment onto the limestone reduced the amount of alkalinity and calcium released into solution. However, if the sediment is removed by agitating the limestone then an equivalent or greater amount of alkalinity may be added to solution and more metals removed from solution compared to fresh limestone. The coating on the limestone had a high concentration of manganese oxides in addition to slightly lower concentrations of aluminium and iron. Removal of these metals from the water was due to the increase in pH produced by limestone dissolution in addition to sorption reactions of the existing coating which had natural microbial activity.

The odorous air emissions from confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs), such as swine, poultry and dairy farms, are increasingly raising community complaints. Odorous emissions can result in health damages, psychological discomforts and adverse aesthetic effects in the community. However, these emissions are not well characterized up to now due to the lack of legislation, the limitations in sampling and instrumentation techniques, and the complexity of the emissions themselves. This study is aimed at the development of a high volume sampler and sorbent assembly to identify the odor causing compounds from a diary CAFO. The sorbent was custom designed to target the potential compounds that may exist in a dairy farm and was validated in laboratory with a synthetic odor from the swine manure. The actual samples at the diary farm were collected in spring and summer of 2005. The sorbents were solvent extracted and individual odor compounds were identified using GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy). The data obtained indicated that high volume sampling can shorten the sampling time from days to within 4 h. Both volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) have been identified from the dairy farm, such as phenol, methylphenol, 4-ethyl phenol, indole, methyl indole, benzyl alcohol, hexanoic acid, valeric acid and iso-valeric acid, together with some nitrogen containing compounds that have not been reported before.

This is a study of the sources of alkylphenol and alkylphenol ethoxylates in wastewater, including the new observation that the main contribution is from textiles. Alkylphenols and alkylphenol ethoxylates are widely used chemicals in various applications that are partly under environmental restrictions within Europe. The study sets out to analyze the most important sources of this large group of organic compounds in an urban wastewater system. A substance flow analysis (SFA) of the technosphere in Stockholm, Sweden in 2004 was conducted, allowing a comparison of 13 groups of goods' emissions to wastewater. It was found that the groups of textiles and cleaning agents were the major sources to wastewater, while the group's personal care products and paint and lacquers give smaller contributions. The content of alkylphenol ethoxylates in goods, especially in textiles, is a most significant source and is probably valid for other urban areas as well.

Fluoride, a common phytotoxic air, water and soil pollutant is commonly released to the environment by a number of industrial processes. Agricultural soils high in fluoride are common due to long term accumulation of fluoride from multi-sources and extensive application of phosphate fertilizers. The effect of sodium fluoride (0, 50,100,150 mM) on growth, pigments content, changes in biochemical parameters, along with fluoride and other ions accumulation was investigated in Salicornia brachiata grown in solution cultures under controlled conditions. With fluoride treatment growth as fresh or dry mass accumulation increased marginally. However, higher concentrations decreased the biomass and shoot tip became blunt; margin of the shoot changed its colour to reddish brown and developed necrotic spots. Photosynthetic pigments (chlorophylls and carotenoids) content decreased, while, anthocyanin content increased significantly with fluoride treatment. Peroxidase (POX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), ATPase and acid phosphate activities were negatively regulated. In addition F-, Na⁺, Mn²⁺ and Fe²⁺ ions concentration increased while, K⁺, Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ contents decreased with fluoride treatment. To our knowledge this is the first report on fluoride tolerance in a marshy halophytes using as high as 150 mM concentration and the results suggest that S. brachiata is a moderately fluoride tolerant annual halophyte and may be useful to vegetate the fluoride contaminated marshy lands.

This study investigated particulate matter (PM) granulometry delivered in source area runoff as a function of hydrologic transport and settling. At a Baton Rouge, LA paved urban watershed, event runoff volume and PM load were “fully captured” and recovered in settling tanks. Events were differentiated as mass-limited (ML) or flow-limited (FL) and PM differentiated into suspended (1 to ~25 μm), settleable (~25 to 75 μm), sediment (75 to 4,750 μm) fractions; and also particle size distributions (PSDs). Suspended sediment concentration (SSC)-turbidity relationships were unique for FL events compared to ML events; while 60 min of quiescent settling produced a single distinct relationship across all events. ML events transported higher proportions of settleable and sediment mass compared to higher suspended mass for FL events. Event-based ratios of settled and unsettled turbidity as well as SSC mass were statistically different for ML and FL events. For the same settling conditions, treatment of ML and FL events were statistically different. Results demonstrated that PM separation by a unit operation was a deterministic function of granulometry, hydrodynamics, unit operation mechanisms and loads, but significantly influenced by the indeterminate nature of local climate; and hydrology which drives PM delivery and is not known a priori. Combining the influences of scour and lack of maintenance, unit operation performance is non-stationary and cannot be described by a single value. Treatment should be tied to an effluent concentration; granulometry and load.

A study on perchlorate distribution was conducted in male adult prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster). Excretion via urine was the major pathway for perchlorate fate in the body, with the highest concentrations of perchlorate detected in urine after exposure to perchlorate through drinking water [250 μg/ml Mg(ClO₄)₂], and an average of 34% and 88% of perchlorate intake recovered in urine in the 4- and 8-h exposure groups, respectively. Perchlorate mass in kidney, thyroid, blood, and urine were related to perchlorate intake (254.5-2687.7 μg). Perchlorate excretion and depuration patterns via urine were tested further using male adult deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus). Animals were exposed to perchlorate through dosed drinking water (0, 17, 165, and 1600 ng/ml). Perchlorate concentrations in urine showed a significant difference among the three dosed groups during a 28-day exposure period. However, no difference was found in urine among the three dosages in terms of mass percentage of perchlorate intake from water at each sampling time over the 28-day exposure period. Both concentrations of perchlorate and mass percentage in urine reached a steady state after 1 day in all treatments. On average 46%, 46%, and 61% of perchlorate intake from water was recovered in urine over the exposure period in high, medium, and low dose groups, respectively. Including perchlorate consumption from rodent chow (1.44 ng/g), less than 46% of perchlorate intake was recovered in urine in the high and medium dose groups, and <61% in the low dose group. Three parameter first-order decay models fit the depuration curve very well, with r > 0.99 in both the low and high dose groups; half-lives of perchlorate in deer mice were estimated as 9.12 and 7.25 h in the low and high dose groups, respectively. Endogenous generation of perchlorate and/or some degree of retention or metabolism of perchlorate may occur in deer mice, based in part on the uncompleted mass balance in the excretion and depuration experiments. The data reported herein should provide additional insight for perchlorate fate determination in animals and humans and valuable information for perchlorate risk assessment in the environment, especially wildlife.

The increase of traffic and the rising energy consumption mean a challenge to the air pollution control and to environmental protection. Measures of air pollution control concentrated primarily on the reduction of gaseous pollutants. However, in the field of air hygiene in Central Europe, especially the load of near-surface atmospheric dust becomes threatening to human health. A SIMS microprobe for ultra fine feature analysis is used to image the elemental composition at the surface of submicrometer urban dust particles collected at two measurement stations in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The NanoSIMS 50 has been chosen because it creates one intensity image for each selected element in a high spatial resolution down to 50 nm. The atmospheric fine dust consists of a mixture of organic and inorganic compounds. The elemental composition at the surface of particles was studied using a global image segmentation technique to separate the signal from the background of the particles. The analysis of the binary intensity images was carried out using several shape and proximity measures. The patch shape complexity and distribution for industrial/urban particles were found to differ significantly from the solids collected from a forest site. We conclude that the methodology developed in the study is a reliable tool to differentiate between potential sources of airborne particulate matter.

A 20-month column experiment investigated leaching of Al, Cu, Mn, Ni, Zn, Cd and Pb during sulphide oxidation in mine tailings with and without sewage sludge (SS) amendment. Leachate pH decreased gradually in all columns during the experiment, irrespective of treatment, due to sulphide oxidation. As the degree of sulphide oxidation, and thus the pH trajectory, differed between replicates (n = 3), running data for each column used are reported separately and the relationships between sulphide oxidation, metal leaching and treatment in each column compared. Mean pH in the columns correlated negatively with total amounts of leached SO₄ ²⁻. In the beginning of the experiment the leachate concentrations of Al, Cu, Zn, Ni and Pb were higher in SS-treated columns due to high initial concentrations of dissolved organic carbon. As leaching proceeded, however, the amounts of Al, Cu, Mn and Ni leached from the columns were closely related to the degree of sulphide oxidation in each column, i.e. to its mean pH. There were no statistically significant differences between treatments regarding the total amounts of metals leached and thus addition of sewage sludge to the tailings appeared to play a minor role for metal leaching patterns. Peak concentrations of Al and Cu in the leachate from untreated tailings and of Zn in the leachate from both untreated and SS-treated tailings at pH 4 exceeded national background values for groundwater.

This paper presents a study on the batch adsorption of a basic dye, methylene blue (MB), from aqueous solution onto ground hazelnut shell in order to explore its potential use as a low-cost adsorbent for wastewater dye removal. A contact time of 24 h was required to reach equilibrium. Batch adsorption studies were carried out by varying initial dye concentration, initial pH value (3-9), ionic strength (0.0-0.1 mol L⁻¹), particle size (0-200 μm) and temperature (25-55°C). The extent of the MB removal increased with increasing in the solution pH, ionic strength and temperature but decreased with increase in the particle size. The equilibrium data were analysed using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The characteristic parameters for each isotherm were determined. By considering the experimental results and adsorption models applied in this study, it can be concluded that equilibrium data were represented well by Langmuir isotherm equation. The maximum adsorption capacities for MB were 2.14 x 10⁻⁴, 2.17 x 10⁻⁴, 2.20 x 10⁻⁴ and 2.31 x 10⁻⁴ mol g⁻¹ at temperature of 25, 35, 45 and 55°C, respectively. Adsorption heat revealed that the adsorption of MB is endothermic in nature. The results indicated that the MB strongly interacts with the hazelnut shell powder.
