Temperature, pH and trace elements (F, P, Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) contents were determined in 16 stations as well as in 2 industrial and 2 domestic discharge sources, in the central coastal area of the Gulf of Gabes. Compared to the northern and southern areas of the study area, the highest contents of contaminants were reached in the central area which hosts the coastal industrial complex. The seawater in this central area was also found to be acid and of higher temperature. Based on the Water Pollution Index results, an increasing degradation gradient of the seawater quality was revealed from northern and/or southern stations to central ones, categorized as ‘strongly to seriously affected’. Phosphogypsum wastes dumped by the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT) seem to have continuously degraded the seawater quality in the study area. A rapid intervention is needed to stop the effects on the marine environment.

2018
Gu, Yang-Guang
Intertidal surface sediments collected from Zhelin Bay, the largest mariculture base of eastern Guangdong Province of China, were analyzed for total metal concentrations and chemical speciation. Average total metal concentrations (mg/kg) were 0.063 (Cd), 35.69 (Pb), 23.07 (Cr), 7.50 (Ni), 7.95 (Cu), 74.95 (Zn), and 751.32 (Mn). Concentrations of Cd, Cu, Zn, and Mn were significantly higher than the corresponding background values of Zhelin Bay. All studied metals were dominated by residual fractions, whereas the second relatively higher average portions of Cd (24.10%) and Mn (15.17%) were strongly associated with the acid-soluble fraction. Overall, the intertidal surface sediments of Zhelin Bay were only slightly polluted based on the pollution load index (PLI), with a 21% probability of toxicity based on the mean effects range–median quotient. The metals Cd and Mn posed medium to high risk levels based on the method of risk assessment code (RAC).

2018
de Villiers, S.
The microfibre content of beach sediment samples was established at 175 sampling sites along over 2700 km of South Africa's coastline in 2016 and again in 2017. The average microfibre content was 80 ± 102 F/dm3 in Feb/March 2017 (n = 161), and 87 ± 84 F/dm3 in May/June 2016 (n = 128). These average values, and the observed ranges of 0 to 797 F/dm3 in 2017 and 4 to 772 F/dm3 in 2016, are consistent with global observations. The highest microfibre levels were observed at sampling sites close to large coastal waste water treatment work discharge points. Several instances of temporal variability are observed, only some of which can be associated with seasonal changes in river runoff. This baseline data set is a valuable reference point for identification of priority study sites for more detailed study of marine ecosystem response to microfibre pollution.

Spatio-temporal and seasonal variation of the water quality characteristics of the Hooghly River Estuary, India were studied considering eight stations of diverse eco-hydrological characteristics. Wide variations in turbidity, total dissolved solids and fecal coliform exceeded the permissible BIS drinking water level limit. The estuary is observed to be relatively low-oxygenated, mesotropic and phosphate limiting. Spatial heterogeneity and impact of the southwest monsoon were remarkably pronounced in the distribution of the inorganic nutrients revealing the following values (expressed in μgatml−1): nitrate+nitrite (2.42–37.19), phosphate (0.41–1.52) and silicate (38.5–187.75). Water Quality Index (WQI) values confirmed the prevailing ‘bad’ condition, detrimental for sustenance of aquatic biota. Results of Principal Component Analysis identified the major factors liable for water quality deterioration while cluster analysis categorized the stations on the basis of similar water quality status. The authors recommend adopting preventive measures for water quality improvement linked to biodiversity conservation.

Lee, Hwang | Byun, Da-Eun | Kim, Ju Min | Kwon, Jung-Hwan
To evaluate rate of migration from plastic debris, desorption of model hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs) from polyethylene (PE)/polypropylene (PP) films to water was measured using PE/PP films homogeneously loaded with the HOCs. The HOCs fractions remaining in the PE/PP films were compared with those predicted using a model characterized by the mass transfer Biot number. The experimental data agreed with the model simulation, indicating that HOCs desorption from plastic particles can generally be described by the model. For hexachlorocyclohexanes with lower plastic-water partition coefficients, desorption was dominated by diffusion in the plastic film, whereas desorption of chlorinated benzenes with higher partition coefficients was determined by diffusion in the aqueous boundary layer. Evaluation of the fraction of HOCs remaining in plastic films with respect to film thickness and desorption time showed that the partition coefficient between plastic and water is the most important parameter influencing the desorption half-life.

A sediment core, spanning from the year 1925 ± 3.03 to 2012, was collected for analyzing historical distribution of mercury (Hg) in the Old Yellow River Estuary (OYRE), China. The Hg concentrations in the sediment core ranged from 14 to 351 ng g−1, with the high values occurred in the middle layers (1960–1996), which may be resulted from intensive human activities during this period, such as oil exploitation and booming of petrochemical industry, salt chemical industry and chlor-alkali plants. A significant positive correlation was found between THg and loss on ignition (LOI). The main fraction of Hg existed in residual part while the fraction that was easy to leach out from sediments accounted for only a small portion according to the results of BCR sequential extraction procedure. Multiple ecological risks indices and guidelines of Hg indicated that the sedimentary record presented an “intermediate state” for Hg contamination in the OYRE.

Ampou, Eghbert Elvan | Ouillon, Sylvain | Andréfouët, Serge
The Coral Triangle is the epicenter of marine biodiversity, yet the numbers of habitats that can be found on coral reefs remain poorly described. First surveys for habitat mapping in Indonesia revealed a high number of habitats (>150) even for structurally simple reefs. To be able to represent all these habitats, typical habitat mapping procedures and performances are poorly effective even using very high resolution satellite images. Using Bunaken Island (North Sulawesi, Indonesia) as a case study, we devised a way to maintain all the in situ habitat information in remote sensing habitat map products without loss and with mapping procedures based on photo-interpretation. The result is a product which is consistent with a per-polygon fuzzy classification. As such, it is a complex product that meets our habitat representation goal, but its complexity can also limit its immediate use by managers and conservation planners when analyses per habitat are needed.

The objective of the present study was to assess the presence of 17 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in blood of two closely related top predators, the Scopoli's (Calonectris diomedea) and Cory's (C. borealis) shearwaters that breed allopatrically in Mediterranean and Atlantic basins. Among PFAS, perfluorooctanesulfononic acid (PFOS) and long chain perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCA) were detected in all samples, highlighting somehow the ubiquity of such pollutants. Scopoli's shearwaters from the Mediterranean showed significant higher levels in all PFAS when compared with those levels determined in the colony of Cory's shearwater from the Atlantic Ocean. Moreover, significant differences also arose within the Mediterranean colonies, with the colony of the Central Mediterranean (Zembra Island in Tunisia) having the lowest levels of all PFAS. Thus, our study suggests a marked geographical pattern regarding the presence of such contaminants, and emphasizes the necessity to study PFAS accumulation in birds inhabiting temperate regions.

Subsea oil well blowouts and pipeline leaks release oil and gas to the environment through vigorous jets. Predicting the breakup of the released fluids in oil droplets and gas bubbles is critical to predict the fate of petroleum compounds in the marine water column. To predict the gas bubble size in oil well blowouts and pipeline leaks, we observed and quantified the flow behavior and breakup process of gas for a wide range of orifice diameters and flow rates. Flow behavior at the orifice transitions from pulsing flow to continuous discharge as the jet crosses the sonic point. Breakup dynamics transition from laminar to turbulent at a critical value of the Weber number. Very strong pure gas jets and most gas/liquid co-flowing jets exhibit atomization breakup. Bubble sizes in the atomization regime scale with the jet-to-plume transition length scale and follow −3/5 power-law scaling for a mixture Weber number.

We analyzed the data obtained from field observations on a gas hydrate drilling area in Dongsha of northern South China Sea (SCS) in middle May (before drilling) and early October (after drilling) in 2013. The variation in the phytoplankton communities and biomass as well as the impacts of environmental factors including dissolved methane was studied. Results indicated that the gas hydrate drilling area in Dongsha, SCS exhibited a typical low-nutrients low-chlorophyll a (LNLC) environment accompanied with low phytoplankton abundance. A total of 103 taxa belonging to 52 genera of 5 classes were identified, with diatoms and dinoflagellates dominating the community. Both phytoplankton abundance and chlorophyll a (Chl a) were highest at the subsurface maximum layer. The subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) before and after drilling were stabilized at 75 m (0.30 ± 0.06 mg/m³ and 0.51 ± 0.29 mg/m³, respectively), while the subsurface maximum of abundance after drilling went deeper to 75 m (604.17 ± 313.22 cells/L) from the surface (707.14 ± 243.98 cells/L) before drilling. After drilling, phosphate and Chl a increased significantly, but no significant differences were observed on abundance. Dominant species of diatoms were basically constant with dinoflagellates becoming more apparent in higher occurrence and abundance, while Cyanophyta was diverse after drilling. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and Spearman's correlation analysis both indicated that temperature, pH and phosphates were major factors causing fluctuation in phytoplankton community structure, while dissolved methane had non-significant impact directly. We clearly found both abundance and Chl a increased in particular water layers (between 50 and 75 m) and at stations (DS06, DS08 and DS15) where dissolved methane concentrations were also abnormally high. This study appeared to partly coincide with the findings of natural oil seeps in the Gulf of Mexico, which assumed that the turbulence from the natural oil and gas leaking zone could raise the bottom water through the rising bubbles and bring cold nutrient rich waters to the thermocline from the deep seeps. This plume-generated upwelling could then fuel a bottom-up effect on the photosynthetic species in the upper pelagic waters within the euphotic zone.
