Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are toxic and ubiquitous in the environment and pose great risks. Bioaccumulation by plankton is the outset for PAHs entering marine food web. The long-term driving environmental factors for bioaccumulation of PAHs in zooplankton have not been well investigated. In this study, high variation of PAH concentrations in zooplankton (5 to 5440 ng g⁻¹ dry weight) was found, with the highest PAH levels near the transect Kaohsiung Harbor. Precipitation significantly enhances the PAH concentration in zooplankton and affects the PAH distribution in the water column, indicating PAH input from terrestrial runoff. The sources of PAHs in the coastal waters are a mixture of petroleum and combustion. Biomass dilution dominates bioaccumulation of PAHs in zooplankton, especially for the dominant species, copepods. This study provides the first information on PAH bioaccumulation in zooplankton to understand PAH transport in the plankton food web in subtropical coastal waters.

Microbes capable of degrading hydrocarbons in oil are present in low abundances in coastal waters, but quickly respond to oil following a spill. When estimating potential biodegradation rates in the laboratory, high concentrations of inorganic nutrients are often added to prevent nutrient limitation. In this study, we tested the short term response of coastal microbes to fresh diluted bitumen under varying nutrient conditions in a cold water regime. Total hydrocarbon concentrations changed minimally over five days; however, oil composition changed over time and the abundance of microbes increased in all treatments. Addition of phosphate, with or without nitrogen, resulted in rapid changes in community composition, but after three days treatments no longer differed. Nutrients were never depleted in any treatment suggesting that, even at low inorganic nutrient concentrations, microbial communities can quickly respond to hydrocarbons following a spill.

It is well known that mussels are exposed to microplastics but ingestion and potential effects on mussel larvae are not well understood. We quantified ingestion and egestion of 100 nm and 2 μm polystyrene beads in blue mussel larvae after 4 h exposure and 16 h depuration using different plastic-to-microalgae ratios. Effects on growth and development of mussel larvae were investigated at 0.42, 28.2 and 282 μgL−1 within 15 days of exposure. We found that, on a mass basis, larvae ingested a higher amount of 2 μm than 100 nm beads, while egestion was independent of particle size and the plastics-to-algae ratio. Although particle egestion occurred readily, microplastics remained inside the larvae. Larval growth was not affected but abnormally developed larvae increased after exposure to polystyrene beads. Malformations were more pronounced for 100 nm beads, at higher concentration and after longer exposure time.

Despite the beneficial aspect of aquatic food's consumption, bioaccumulation of toxic metals in fish can enhance the health risk for the consumers. Heavy metals were measured from editable tissues of some commercial fish species like Latis calcarifer, Silonia silondia, Clupisoma garua, Planiliza subviridis, Otolithoides pama, Tenulosa ilisa, Rhinomugil corsula, and Aila coila in the Meghna river estuary in Noakhali district. Heavy metals such as As, Pb, Cd, Cu, and Cr were detected by ICP-MS, which were significantly different (p ≤ 0.01), and the hierarchy of all mean concentrations were: Cu (5.14 mg/kg) > Pb (3.79 mg/kg) > As (1.08 mg/kg) > Cr (0.78 mg/kg) > Cd (0.12 mg/kg). The mean concentration of Cu (6.62 mg/kg) imparted to the maximum level in L. calcarifer, which slightly exceeded the Bangladesh food safety guideline. The mean BAFs of the contaminants were found as: Pb (1042.29) > Cr (1036.47) > As (934.84) > Cd (832.77) > Cu (772). Further, L. calcarifer, S. silondia, C. garua, and P. subviridis showed the bioaccumulative status. To assess the health risk effects, estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ) and carcinogenic risk (CR) were conducted. THQs for both adult and children consumers were <1, indicating that, consumers would not experience the non-carcinogenic health effects. Although children were more susceptible than adults, CR for all the consumers was found in the acceptable range (10⁻⁶ to 10⁻⁴).

Biodegradation is important for the fate of oil spilled in marine environments, yet parameterization of biodegradation varies across oil spill models, which usually apply constant first-order decay rates to multiple pseudo-components describing an oil. To understand the influence of model parameterization on the fate of subsurface oil droplets, we reviewed existing algorithms and rates and conducted a model sensitivity study. Droplets were simulated from a blowout at 2000 m depth and were either treated with sub-surface dispersant injection (2% dispersant to oil ratio) or untreated. The most important factor affecting oil fate was the size of the droplets, with biodegradation contributing substantially to the fate of droplets ≤0.5 mm. Oil types, which were similar, had limited influence on simulated oil fate. Model results suggest that knowledge of droplet sizes and improved estimation of pseudo-component biodegradation rates and lag times would enhance prediction of the fate and transport of subsurface oil.

Environmental conditions and xenobiotic exposure can be sources of stress to living organisms. Biological markers are measurable indicator of changes which may happen at any biological level and which can be considered an early warning signal of some biological or environmental state or condition. A structured field study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between three biomarker assays and the spatial and temporal variation of each biomarker in samples of Mytilus edulis. The three biomarkers were the neutral red retention assay, micronucleus assay and comet assay, which indicate damage at different cellular/molecular levels. Three sites in Poole Harbour, an area on the South coast of the UK were sampled on six separate occasions at least three weeks apart. The results for the comet assay showed a significant difference between sites and between sampling dates whereas the results for the other two assays did not show a significant difference for either factor. There was no significant correlation between the results of any pair of the three biomarkers. The results of the micronucleus assay showed a significant correlation with water temperature. This temperature effect, as well as induced repair, may contribute to explain the lack of a strict correspondence between pollution gradients and biomarkers responses.

We investigated how elevated CO₂ affects the responses of Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis and Ulva lactuca to NH₄⁺ enrichments. All algae were incubated under four nutritional conditions (zero addition, 100, 500, and 2500 μM NH₄⁺), and two CO₂ levels (390 ppm and 1000 ppm). The growth, photosynthesis, and soluble protein contents of both species increased under the eutrophication condition (100 μM NH₄⁺). However, the growth and carotenoid contents of the two species declined when NH₄⁺ concentration increased. Under the super eutrophication condition (2500 μM NH₄⁺), all indexes measured in G. lemaneiformis were suppressed, while the growth and photosynthesis in U. lactuca changed indistinctively, both compared with the control. Moreover, under the super eutrophication condition, elevated CO₂ reduced the suppression in the growth of G. lemaneiformis, but decreased the growth of U. lactuca. Nonetheless, G. lemaneiformis displayed much lower growth rates than U. lactuca under the super eutrophication and elevated CO₂ condition.

In this study we examined the adsorption characteristics of heavy metals on microplastic through laboratory test and field test. We demonstrated that polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, polyethylene, polyamides and polyformaldehyde could adsorb lead, copper and cadmium in the simulating solution, and the heavy metals showed higher adsorbance on PVC and PP particles compared with PA, PE and POM. In the field experiment, the adsorption rate and concentration of heavy metals varied significantly among different plastic types and locations. The adsorbability of PP and PVC toward Pb and Mn was strongly correlated with the metal concentration in seawater. We also compared the adsorption quantity of PP to heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which resulted in an order of magnitude within one month. During the adsorption, the surface morphology of the microplastics which were washed and corroded by seawater underwent a rough-smooth-rough changing process, and different materials had great differences.

The present paper is a contribution to the first initiative of the Port Baseline Survey (PBS) for Non-indigenous species (NIS) in the Mediterranean Sea. It presents a report on the soft-bottom macrobenthos from the five Adriatic ports: Bari, Ancona (Italy), Koper (Slovenia), Pula, Rijeka (Croatia), with a focus on the presence and contribution of NIS to native assemblages. Out of 451 species identified, only four were common to all ports. A total of eight NIS were recorded, five in surveyed ports and three in the lagoon connected to the Port of Koper. The highest number of NIS was recorded in Bari, and the highest abundance in Ancona and Bari. Generally, the number, abundance and contribution of NIS seems too low to cause a substantial impact on native communities in surveyed ports. The suitability of methods adopted for PBS for soft-bottom NIS was discussed and suggestion for methodological improvement is provided.

In this study we have identified and characterized microplastic particles (MPs) found in six fish species of commercial importance in central Chile. The fish species belong to different trophic levels and were obtained from the oceanic and coastal habitats. To analyze MPs, the fish gastrointestinal content was extracted, analyzed and characterized using a microscopy equipped with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The MPs found in fish samples were mainly constituted by red microfibers (70–100%) with sizes ranging between 176 and 2842 μm. Polyester, polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were identified as the prevalent polymers detected. The coastal species showed the presence of microfibers with a higher size and abundance (71%) compared to oceanic species (29%), suggesting there is a greater exposure risk. These findings are consistent with results found in other investigations worldwide. However, further research is still needed to accurately establish the potential exposure risk for the public consuming these fish and the impact of MPs in the Chilean fishery activities.
