2021
Verma, Puneet | Jafari, Mohammad | Zare, Ali | Pickering, Edmund | Guo, Yi | Osuagwu, Chiemeriwo Godday | Stevanovic, Svetlana | Brown, Richard | Ristovski, Zoran
This study investigates the morphology and nanostructure of soot particles during cold-start and hot-start engine operation of a diesel engine using oxygenated fuels. The soot samples were analysed using transmission electron microscopy. The oxygen content in the fuel was varied between 0 and 12%. The results showed that the primary particles during cold-start have significantly smaller size when compared to hot-start engine operation. The addition of oxygenated fuels also resulted in smaller sized primary particles. Smaller radius of gyration and higher fractal dimension of soot aggregates during cold-start would mean smaller aggregate size with a more compact structure. Shorter fringes with a higher inter-fringe spacing for cold-start would mean lower graphitisation of soot particles that could be related to higher oxidation reactivity of soot particles.

In recent years, the incidence of lipid metabolism disorders in adolescents has gradually increased, and the effects of DEHP on lipid metabolism have received widespread attention. In this study, 463 adolescents aged 16–19 years were enrolled as subjects. This study analyzed the associations between the urinary levels of DEHP metabolites (MEHP, MEOHP, MEHHP, MECPP, MCMHP, and ∑DEHP) and BMI, WHR, WtHR, VAI, LAP, the plasma levels of lipids (TC, TG, HDL-C, and LDL-C), and the peripheral blood leukocyte mRNA levels of SREBP-2, SR-BI, LDLR, and NR1H3. Animal experiments were performed to confirm and expand findings. Wistar rats were administered DEHP at 0, 5, 50, and 500 mg/kg/d for 8 weeks. The serum and liver levels of TC, TG, HDL-C, and LDL-C, and the liver mRNA and protein levels of SREBP-2, SR-BI, LDLR, and NR1H3 were measured. The results showed that WHR, VAI, and LAP were significantly positively associated with the urinary levels of MECPP and ∑DEHP; the plasma HDL-C level was significantly negatively associated with the levels of MECPP, MCMHP and ∑DEHP; the peripheral blood leukocyte mRNA levels of SREBP-2, NR1H3, and LDLR were significantly positively correlated with the MCMHP level; and the SR-BI mRNA level was significantly positively correlated with the levels of MECPP and MCMHP in adolescents. Moreover, the results of animal experiments showed that DEHP exposure significantly increased the serum levels of TC, HDL-C, and LDL-C in 500 mg/kg/d group, as well as the liver levels of TC and HDL-C, up-regulated SREBP-2 mRNA and protein expression in 50 and 500 mg/kg/d groups. DEHP exposure significantly down-regulated SR-BI and NR1H3 protein expression in the liver of the 500 mg/kg/d group rats. Our findings indicate that DEHP exposure can affect lipid metabolism in adolescents by regulating the expression of lipid metabolism-related genes.

Understanding the radon dispersion released from this mine are important targets as radon dispersion is used to assess radiological hazard to human. In this paper, the main objective is to develop and optimize a machine learning model namely Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for quick and accurate prediction of radon dispersion released from Sinquyen mine, Vietnam. For this purpose, a total of million data collected from the study area, which includes input variables (the gamma data of uranium concentration with 3 × 3m grid net survey inside mine, 21 of CR-39 detectors inside dwellings surrounding mine, and gamma dose at 1 m from ground surface data) and an output variable (radon dispersion) were used for training and validating the predictive model. Various validation methods namely coefficient of determination (R²), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) were used. In addition, Partial dependence plots (PDP) was used to evaluate the effect of each input variable on the predictive results of output variable. The results show that ANN performed well for prediction of radon dispersion, with low values of error (i.e., R² = 0.9415, RMSE = 0.0589, and MAE = 0.0203 for the testing dataset). The increase of number of hidden layers in ANN structure leads the increase of accuracy of the predictive results. The sensitivity results show that all input variables govern the dispersion radon activity with different amplitudes and fitted with different equations but the gamma dose is the most influenced and important variable in comparison with strike, distance and uranium concentration variables for prediction of radon dispersion.

2021
Kippler, Maria | Gyllenhammar, Irina | Glynn, Anders | Levi, Michael | Lignell, Sanna | Berglund, Marika
Exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) through fish is a global public health problem. Exposure monitoring is essential for health risk assessment, especially in pregnant women and children due to the documented neurotoxicity. Herein, we evaluate a time series of MeHg exposure via fish in primiparous Swedish women, covering a time period of 23 years (1996–2019). The 655 included mothers were part of the POPUP study (Persistent Organic Pollutants in Uppsala Primiparas) conducted by the Swedish Food Agency (SFA). MeHg exposure was assessed via measurements of total mercury (Hg) in hair using either cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrophotometry or inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, showing very good linear agreement (R² = 0.97). Maternal characteristics and fish consumption were obtained via questionnaires. The median concentration of total Hg in hair was 0.38 mg/kg (range 0.17–1.5) in 1996 and 0.25 mg/kg (range 0.03–1.1) in 2019. On average the women consumed 11 ± 8.2 meals of fish per month, and fish consumption was positively correlated with total Hg in hair (Spearman correlation: 0.39; p < 0.001). In multiple regression analyses, the geometric mean annual decrease of total Hg in hair was −2.5% (95% CI: -3.2, −1.8%). Total fish consumption increased up to 2011 (B: 0.32 times/month per year; 95% CI 0.17, 0.46) after which it started to decline (B: -0.66 times/month per year; 95% CI -0.92, −0.40). Moreover, both total Hg in hair and fish consumption was positively associated with maternal age and education, and inversely associated with pre-pregnancy BMI. In conclusion, the exposure to MeHg via fish appears to be slowly declining among Swedish pregnant women.

Heatwaves and greenness have been shown to affect health, but the evidence on their joint effects is limited. We aim to assess the associations of the combined exposure to greenness and heatwaves. We utilized five waves (February 2000–October 2014) of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), a prospective cohort of older adults aged 65. We defined heatwaves as the daily maximum temperature ≥92.5th percentile with duration ≥3 days. We calculated the number of heatwave days in one year before death to and cumulative Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) during follow-up to assess individual long-term exposure to heatwaves and greenness. Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the effects of greenness, heatwaves, and their interaction on mortality, adjusted for covariates. We conducted subgroup analyses by residence, gender, and age. There were 20,758 participants in our study, totaling 67,312 person-years of follow-up. The mean NDVI was 0·41 (SD 0.13), and the mean number of heatwave days was 8.92 (2.04). In the adjusted model, the mortality hazard ratio (HR) for each 3-day increase in heatwave days was 1.04 (95% CI 1.04, 1.05), each 0.1-unit decrease in cumulative NDVI was 1.06 (1.05, 1.07). In the adjusted model with an interaction term, the HR for the interaction term was 1.01 (1.01, 1.02) with a p-value less than 0.001. In our subgroup analyses, the HR for each 3-day increase in heatwave days was higher in urban areas than in rural areas (1.06 vs. 1.03), and the HR for 0.1-unit decrease in NDVI was higher in urban areas than in rural areas (1.08 vs. 1.04). Greenness can protect against the effect of heatwaves on mortality, and heatwaves affect the health effects of greenness. Urban dwellers have a higher response to the detrimental effect of heatwaves and a higher marginal benefit from greenness exposure.

Antibiotics are commonly used in livestock and poultry breeding along with organic arsenic. Through long-term accumulation, they can enter into the surrounding soil through various pathways and contaminate the soil. In this paper, tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) and roxarsone (ROX) contaminated soil were used as the representatives of the two kinds of veterinary drugs contaminated soil, respectively, to study the thermal desorption behavior and arsenic stabilization process. Different parameters like heating temperatures, heat duration, stabilizer type and dosage were optimized for effective removal of TCs and ROX. Furthermore, TCs and ROX removal path and ROX stabilization mechanism were explored. Results of the study showed that over 98% of tetracycline antibiotics and roxarsone were effectively removed at 300 °C for 60 min. The heat treatment process of TCs contaminated soil was controlled by the first-order kinetics. Based on the detection of degradation products and thermogravimetric analysis, the possible thermal degradation path of TCs and ROX was proposed. Addition of FeSO₄.7H₂O (10% by weight) as stabilizer during the heat treatment process yielded 96.7% stabilization rate. Through the analysis of arsenic fractions, valence and the characterization of soil samples collected after the heat treatment, mechanism of arsenic stabilization in ROX was explored. The results show that thermal treatment combined with chemical stabilization technology can not only degrade TCs and ROX efficiently and completely, but also convert organic arsenic into inorganic state, which is conducive to better stabilization, and finally achieve effective and safe remediation of this kind of contaminated soil.

Anaerobic digestion is an attractive waste treatment technology, achieving both pollution control and energy recovery. Though the inhibition of polystyrene nanoplastics in anaerobic granular sludge is well studied, no direct evidence has been found on the interaction of methanogens and nanoplastics. In this study, to characterize the location of nanoplastics, Pd-doped polystyrene nanoplastics (Pd-PS) were used to explore the inhibition mechanism of anaerobic sludge through short-term exposure to Methanosarcina acetivorans C2A. The results showed that Pd-PS inhibited the methanogenesis of the anaerobic sludge, and the methane production decreased as the Pd-PS increased, with a 14.29% reduction at the Pd-PS concentration of 2.36 × 10¹⁰ particles/mL. Also, Pd-PS interacted with the protein in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Furthermore, Pd-PS inhibited the methanogenesis of M. acetivorans C2A without exhibiting an evident reduction in the growth. The inhibition of Pd-PS on methane was due to the inhibition of methane production related genes, MtaA and mcrA. These results provide potential explication for the inhibition of nanoplastics on the methanogens, which will fulfill the knowledge on the stability of methanogens under the short-term exposure of nanoplastics.

Long-term exposure to air pollutants, especially particulates, in adulthood is related to cardiovascular diseases and vascular markers of atherosclerosis. However, whether vascular changes in children is related to exposure to air pollutants remains unknown. This study examined whether childhood exposure to air pollutants was related to a marker of cardiovascular risk, carotid intima–media thickness (CIMT) in children aged 11–12 years old. Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC) recruited parents and their children born in 2003–4. Among the participants, CheckPoint examination was conducted when the children were 11–12 years old. Ultrasound of the right carotid artery was performed using standardized protocols. Average and maximum far-wall CIMT, carotid artery distensibility, and elasticity were quantified using semiautomated software. Annual and life-time exposure to air pollutants was estimated using satellite-based land-use regression by residential postcodes. A total of 1063 children (50.4% girls) with CIMT data, serum cholesterol, and modeled estimates of NO₂ and PM₂.₅ exposure for the period 2003 to 2015 were included. The average and maximum CIMT, carotid distensibility, and elasticity were 497 μm (standard deviation, SD 58), 580 μm (SD 44), 17.4% (SD 3.2), and 0.48%/mmHg (SD 0.09), respectively. The life-time average concentrations of PM₂.₅ and NO₂ were 6.4 μg/m³ (SD 1.4) and 6.4 ppb (SD 2.4), respectively. Both average and maximum CIMT were significantly associated with average ambient PM₂.₅ concentration (average CIMT: +5.5 μm per μg/m³, 95% confidence interval, CI 2.4 to 8.5, and maximum CIMT: +4.9 μm per μg/m³, CI 2.3 to 7.6), estimated using linear regression, adjusting for potential confounders. CIMT was not significantly related to NO₂ exposure. Carotid artery diameter, distensibility, and elasticity were not significantly associated with air pollutants. We conclude that life-time exposure to low levels of PM₂.₅ in children might have measurable adverse impacts on vascular structure by age 11–12 years.

Senta, Ivan | Terzic, Senka | Ahel, Marijan
Macrolide antibiotics azithromycin (AZI), erythromycin (ERY) and clarithromycin (CLA) have been recently included in the EU Watch List of contaminants of emerging concern in the aquatic environment. However, their comprehensive assessment in different environmental compartments, by including synthesis intermediates, by-products and transformation products, is still missing. In this work, a novel method, based on pressurized liquid extraction and liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry, was developed and validated for the determination of such an extended range of macrolide residues in sediment and soil samples at low ng/g levels. The method was applied to determine distribution of 13 macrolides in surface and alluvial aquifer sediments collected in a small stream with a history of chronic exposure to wastewater discharges from AZI production. The total concentrations of the target macrolide compounds in surface sediments were up to 29 μg/g and the most prominent individual macrolides were parent AZI, its synthesis intermediate N-demethyl AZI and transformation products decladinosyl AZI and N′-demethyl AZI. Some ERY-related compounds, originating from AZI synthesis, were also frequently detected, though at lower concentration levels (up to 0.31 ng/g in total). The distribution of macrolide residues in surface sediments indicated their active longitudinal transport by resuspension and redeposition of the contaminated sediment particles. The vertical concentration profiles in stream sediments and the underlying alluvial aquifer revealed that macrolide residues reached deeper alluvial sediments (up to 5 m). Moreover, significant levels of macrolides were found in groundwater samples below the streambed, with the total concentrations reaching up to 1.7 μg/L. This study highlights the importance of comprehensive chemical characterization of the macrolide residues, which were shown to persist in surface and alluvial aquifer sediment more than ten years after their discharge into the aquatic environment.
