Comparing sea otter recovery in California (CA) and British Columbia (BC) reveals key ecosystem properties that shape top-down effects in seagrass communities. We review potential ecosystem drivers of sea otter foraging in CA and BC seagrass beds, including the role of coastline complexity and environmental stress on sea otter effects. In BC, we find greater species richness across seagrass trophic assemblages. Furthermore, Cancer spp. crabs, an important link in the seagrass trophic cascade observed in CA, are less common. Additionally, the more recent reintroduction of sea otters, more complex coastline, and reduced environmental stress in BC seagrass habitats supports the hypotheses that sea otter foraging pressure is currently reduced there. In order to manage the ecosystem features that lead to regional differences in top predator effects in seagrass communities, we review our findings, their spatial and temporal constraints, and present a social-ecological framework for future research.

As a consequence of industrialization, urbanization, and population growth in the past decades, high nutrient concentrations from point and non-point sources in aquatic systems have caused major problems to the water quality in rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters. Although the nutrient pollution due to land use change cannot be ignored, the combined sewer overflows and discharging sites have been important point sources of nutrient pollution. Integrated hydrodynamic, chemical, and biological models developed in recent years, which simulate the nutrient transportation from both point and non-point sources, are useful tools to assist in identifying the transport and fate of nutrients from both point and non-point sources. In this paper, water quality data from published literature were reviewed and analyzed to evaluate nutrient (N and P) pollution in aquatic systems. An integrated monitoring and management plan should be continuously developed in the future to monitor and regulate nutrient discharges from point and non-point sources.

2018
Liubartseva, S. | Coppini, G. | Lecci, R. | Clementi, E.
Drift of floating debris is studied with a 2D Lagrangian model with stochastic beaching and sedimentation of plastics. An ensemble of >1010 virtual particles is tracked from anthropogenic sources (coastal human populations, rivers, shipping lanes) to environmental destinations (sea surface, coastlines, seabed). Daily analyses of ocean currents and waves provided by CMEMS at a horizontal resolution of 1/16° are used to force the plastics. High spatio-temporal variability in sea-surface plastic concentrations without any stable long-term accumulations is found. Substantial accumulation of plastics is detected on coastlines and the sea bottom. The most contaminated areas are in the Cilician subbasin, Catalan Sea, and near the Po River Delta. Also, highly polluted local patches in the vicinity of sources with limited circulation are identified. An inverse problem solution, used to quantify the origins of plastics, shows that plastic pollution of every Mediterranean country is caused primarily by its own terrestrial sources.

2018
Waite, Heidi R. | Donnelly, Melinda J. | Walters, Linda J.
This study determined the quantity and diversity of microplastics in water and soft tissues of eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) and Atlantic mud crabs (Panopeus herbstii) in Mosquito Lagoon, a shallow, microtidal estuary along the east coast of central Florida. One-liter water samples had an average of 23.1 microplastic pieces (n = 15). Crabs (n = 90) had an average of 4.2 pieces in tissues/individual plus an average of 20.3 pieces/individual temporarily entangled in exposed surfaces and released within 5 days in tanks. Adult oysters (n = 90) had an average of 16.5 microplastic pieces/individual. Fibers, mostly royal/dark blue in color, dominated our collections. When compared per gram of tissue, crabs had two orders of magnitude more microplastic pieces than oysters. Our numbers were higher than previous studies on invertebrate microplastics; this is potentially the result of extensive urbanization, limited flushing, and intensive recreational usage of Mosquito Lagoon.

Present work aims to document the distribution and metal contamination in the coastal sediments of the Dammam Al-Jubail area, Saudi Arabian Gulf. Twenty-six samples were collected for Al, V, Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Hg, Sr, As, Fe, Co and Ni analysis. Results of enrichment factor indicated that Sr, Cd, Cu, Hg, V, As, Ni, Cr and Zn gave enrichment factors higher than 2 (98.87, 40.28, 33.20, 27.87, 26.11, 14.10, 6.15, 3.72 and 2.62 respectively) implying anthropogenic sources, while Pb, Mn and Al have very low background level (1.37, 0.71, 0.124 respectively), probably originated from natural sources. Average concentrations of Sr, V, Hg, Cd and As were mostly higher than those from the background shale and the earth crust, the Caspian Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the sediment quality guidelines, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aqaba and the Gulf of Oman. The higher levels of the studied metals are mostly related samples with high Al and TOM content, as well as the visible anthropogenic pollutants along the studied coastline. The most recorded anthropogenic pollutants were sewage effluent, landfilling due to coastal infrastructure development, oil spills, petrochemical industries and desalination plants in Al-Jubail industrial city.

2018
Zhang, Xia | Zhang, Jingping | Shen, Yuan | Zhou, Changhao | Huang, Xiaoping
Previous studies conducted on Daya Bay implied that the bay had been undergoing potential phosphorus limitation. In this context, alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) and the associated microbes were investigated in three different seasons in Daya Bay, South China Sea. Both bulk-community (fractioned into dissolved and particulate) and single-cell assays of APA were used to estimate the P status of phytoplankton at the community and species level. Unexpected high potential APA (Vmax) was observed in Daya Bay. Bulk APA showed that the maximum value in the spring (mean 583.26 nM h−1) corresponded well to low phosphate concentration. Furthermore, particulate APA (P-APA) showed an inverse hyperbolic relationship with phosphate, implying the coexistence of both constitutive and inducible AP; meanwhile, a threshold phosphate concentration for the transition from high to low APA was found around 0.2 μM in our study. P-APA and dissolved APA (D-APA) exhibited a tight link with phytoplankton and bacteria, which indicated that both of them were two main carriers of the enzyme. During the spring cruise, we encountered a small-scaled bloom of Gymnodinium that was probably at a declining phase. Extreme high levels of bulk and D-APA were characterized at this spring bloom event, and we suspected that bacteria especially active bacteria played an important role in APA production and partitioning at the post-bloom phase. In Daya Bay, diatoms were the dominant phytoplankton groups and percentages of ELF (Enzyme Labelled Fluorescence) labelled diatoms followed the same seasonal fluctuation as bulk APA, which suggested that diatoms were responsible for major variations of the bulk AP activity except for the spring bloom. Taken together, we considered that phytoplankton may be experiencing more P stress in spring and that the mineralization of organic P via alkaline phosphatase may help phytoplankton overcome P deficiency.

Although the presence of microplastics in marine biota has been widely recorded, extraction methods, method validation and approaches to monitoring are not standardized. In this study a method for microplastic extraction from fish guts based on a chemical alkaline digestion is presented. The average particle retrieval rate from spiked fish guts, used for method validation, was 84%. The weight and shape of the test particles (PET, PC, HD-PE) were also analysed with no noticeable changes in any particle shapes and only minor weight change in PET (2.63%). Microplastics were found in 1.8% of herrings (n=164) and in 0.9% of sprat (n=154). None of the three-spined sticklebacks (n=355) contained microplastic particles.

2018

Osmotic membrane bioreactor (OMBR), which integrates forward osmosis (FO) with biological treatment process, has been recently developed to advance wastewater treatment and reuse. During OMBR operation, driven by osmotic pressure gradient, biologically treated water transports from the mixed liquor, through a semi-permeable FO membrane, into a highly concentrated draw solution. Compared to conventional MBR, OMBR has several advantages, including better product water quality, lower fouling propensity, and higher fouling reversibility. OMBR can be operated in the osmotic dilution mode when the draw solution, such as liquid fertilizers or seawater, can be reused or discharged directly. In most cases, OMBR is integrated with an additional process, commonly including reverse osmosis, membrane distillation, and electrodialysis, to form hybrid systems for sustainably reconcentrating draw solutions and producing clean water for reuse. In addition, several membrane processes, such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and electrodialysis, are combined with OMBR to address its inherent issue, salinity build-up in the bioreactor, and achieve resource (e.g., nutrients and energy) recovery. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding on the performance of OMBR and its hybrid systems in wastewater reuse and resource recovery. OMBR analogs and their performance are also systematically introduced. Key technical challenges and their potential solutions to the further development of OMBR and its hybrid systems are highlighted. This review sheds light on future research for the further development of OMBR and its hybrid systems.

We report a mortality event of Red Phalaropes (Phalaropus fulicarius) that occurred from October to November 2016 on the north coast of British Columbia, Canada. All individuals were severely underweight and showing signs of physiological stress. The guts of all carcasses contained ingested plastics (100%, n = 9). Distribution modelling from pelagic bird surveys (1990–2010) indicated that Red Phalaropes are not typically found in the study area during fall months. Ocean conditions during fall 2016 were unusually warm, coinciding with reduced upwelling in the study area. eBird records since 1980 indicated Red Phalaropes are observed closer to shore during periods associated with reduced upwelling. These results suggest that distribution shifts of Red Phalaropes closer to shore, where plastic debris occurs in higher concentrations, may lead phalaropes to feed on plastic debris while in a weakened state, resulting in a combination of two adverse circumstances.

2018
Bosker, Thijs | Guaita, Lucia | Behrens, Paul
Here we investigate microplastics contamination on beaches of four islands of the Lesser Antilles (Anguilla, St. Barthélemy, St. Eustatius and St. Martin/Maarten). These islands are close to the North Atlantic subtropical gyre, which contains high levels of microplastics. On average 261 ± 6 microplastics/kg of dry sand were found, with a maximum of 620 ± 96 microplastics on Grandes Cayes, Saint Martin. The vast majority of these microplastics (>95%) were fibers. Levels of microplastics differed among islands, with significantly lower levels found in St. Eustatius compared to the other Islands. No difference in microplastic levels was found between windward and leeward beaches. Our research provides a detailed study on microplastics on beaches in the Lesser Antilles. These results are important in developing a deeper understanding of the extent of the microplastic challenge within the Caribbean region, a hotspot of biodiversity.
