Distribution of heavy metals in seafloor sediments on the East China Sea inner shelf: Seasonal variations and typhoon impact Полный текст
2018
Li, Yunhai | Lin, Yunpeng | Wang, Liang
Based on concentrations and distributions of heavy metals, grain size and loss on ignition (LOI) in the seafloor sediments acquired during three surveys in winter and in summer (before and after typhoon Morakot) in the mud deposition center off the Fujian-Zhejiang coast, East China Sea, the seasonal and typhoon-induced variations of heavy metals in seafloor sediments are discussed. It is found that different concentrations of heavy metals occurred in seafloor sediments, but their distribution patterns were similar, gradually decreasing from near-shore to offshore. The distribution of heavy metals was correlated with grain size and LOI in seafloor sediments, which showed significant seasonal variations and typhoon's impact. Based on these results, a conceptual evolution model was built about the seasonal and typhoon's impact on the deposition environment of heavy metals, which has implications for understanding the migration, settling, and burial processes of heavy metals in the sea.

Prorocentrum donghaiense is an important dinoflagellate as it frequently forms harmful algal blooms that cause serious damage to marine ecosystems and fisheries in the coast of East China Sea. Previous studies showed that phosphorus acquisition (especially inorganic phosphorus) was the limiting factor for P. donghaiense growth. However, the responsive mechanism of this microalga under dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) limitation is poorly understood. In this work, the physiological parameters and differentially expressed genes in P. donghaiense response to DIP limitation were comparatively analyzed. DIP-depleted P. donghaiense displayed decreased growth rate, enlarged cell size, decreased cellular phosphorus content, and high AP activities. A forward suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) library representing differentially upregulated genes in P. donghaiense under DIP-depleted conditions was constructed, and 134 ESTs were finally identified, with a significant identity (E values<1×10−4) to the deposited genes (proteins) in the corresponding databases. Five representative genes, namely, NAD-dependent deacetylase, phosphoglycolate phosphatase, heat shock protein (HSP) 90, rhodopsin, and HSP40 were investigated through real-time quantitative PCR to verify the effectiveness of the established SSH library. Results showed that all the selected genes were differentially expressed and thus indicated that the established SSH library generally represented differentially expressed genes. These genes were classified into 11 categories according to their gene ontology annotations of biological processes. The members involved in functional responses such as cell defense/homeostasis, phosphorus metabolism, and cellular cycles were specially discussed. This study is the first to perform a global analysis of differentially expressed functional genes in P. donghaiense under DIP-depleted condition. It provided new insights into the molecular adaptive mechanisms of dinoflagellate in response to phosphorous limitation and elucidating the formation mechanism of algal blooms.

2018
Plastic is produced today in large quantities and used for many purposes. At the end of use, a large part of it gets into the environment, often into the sea and there it is fragmented into the smallest fragments, so-called microplastic (MP). MPs pose a serious challenge to the marine environment such as the sources and properties of MP particles, their impact on marine organisms, and the challenges of environmental pollution. This work, carried out in the fourteen sites in the area, is the first reference to the detection of MP distribution at surface waters in the Sea of Marmara, Turkey. As a result of this study, the average level of MP in the surface was determined to be 1.263 item/m2. The results were higher compared of the most other adjacent regions and show that the Sea of Marmara started to face that problem.

(Craig D.),
Chemical pollution of the marine environment from anthropogenic sources is a global concern due to the potential for long term effects on the ecosystem. Chemical monitoring schemes can detect harmful substances in water, sediment or biota. However, the presence of specific determinants gives no information on how individual species or the ecosystem are impacted. Biological effects techniques are therefore used in environmental monitoring schemes to provide a clearer picture of whether the chemicals present are causing deleterious effects on the species sampled, or whether organisms have been exposed to certain classes of organic contaminants that they may be able to metabolise. Using these techniques, we can provide an assessment of the health of our marine environment (Thain et al., 2008).

Seagrass meadows suffered large-scale declines in the past century. The ‘wasting disease’, pathognomonically associated with Labyrinthula zosterae, reduced populations of Zostera marina on both sides of the North Atlantic in, and since, the 1930s, coinciding with intensive agricultural use of artificial fertilizers and herbicides. This study tests the long-standing hypothesis that nutrient enrichment and a herbicide increases vulnerability to pathogens.Z. marina shoots from the Thames Estuary grown in elevated nitrate concentrations had significantly higher rates of infection by L. zosterae than controls, but not by Aplanochytrium sp., another slime-mould like protist. Z. marina shoots grown in 2μg·l−1 Diuron solutions and infected separately by L. zosterae and Aplanochytrium sp. had significantly higher wasting indices than controls. The results identified Aplanochytrium sp. as another opportunistic pathogen causing a seagrass wasting-type disease and support the hypothesis that pollution by herbicides and nitrate increases the susceptibility of Z. marina to infections.

In order to study the pollution levels and spatiotemporal trend of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) in the Southern Yellow Sea (SYS), thirty-two surface sediment samples and a sediment core have been analyzed, and our results have been compared with previous reports. DDTs contents in our samples ranged from below detection limit to 5.1ng/gdry weight (d.w.), which presented lower ecological risks in the SYS. Surface sediment results show a seaward increasing trend with high values in the northern region of the central basin of the SYS. Our reconstructed core record and historical data from previous reports reveal an increasing trend from 1905 to 1955 but a decline trend since 1985 for DDTs, which is consistent of the production, usage and banning of DDTs in China. The source identification, based on (DDE+DDD)/DDTs, suggested that aged DDTs were the major contributor, though there were some inputs of fresh DDTs from the usage of 1,1-bis(p-Chlorophenyl)-2,2,2-trichloroethanol (dicofol).

The role of soil carbon (C) in coastal wetlands as a net sink is related to the relative abundance of autochthonous versus allochthonous C. We aimed to investigate soil C sources and the pathways by which mangrove vegetation enhances soil C accumulation. We sampled soil to 1 m depth in seven oceanic mangrove forests and an adjacent un-vegetated mudflat at Dongzhai Bay, China. Stable C isotope technique was used to separate autochthonous and allochthonous C sources. Autochthonous C accounted for 27–97% of soil C stock in the top meter. Soil C density was 1.1–3.6 times higher in mangroves than in the mudflat. Among the increased soil C in mangroves relative to mudflat, autochthonous C accounted for 65–100% of the increments. The results suggest that mangrove vegetation enhances soil C storage primarily through in situ inputs, therefore the substantial soil C stocks commonly found in mangroves play an important role in sequestering atmospheric CO2.

Blooms of Ostreopsis cf. ovata, causing health incidence and mass human intoxications in the Mediterranean, gained special attention over the past decades. To study the potential effects of temperature and nutrient enrichment on this benthic dinoflagellate and other associated microalgae in situ, a multifactorial experiment was set up along a temperature gradient of a heat pump system in Monaco. Microalgae were quantified in experimental units, in the natural biofilm and in the water column. No significant interaction was observed between temperature and nutrients. A species- and bloom phase-dependent effect of the increased temperature was recorded, while the nutrient enrichment had a significant effect only at the end of the experiment (when cell abundances were low). Temperature effects were also visible in the biofilm and the surrounding water. The observed assemblages were mainly driven by changes in abundances of Ostreopsis cf. ovata and Actinocyclus sp., affected in different ways.

Here we report on the distribution of microplastic contamination in two developed estuaries in the Southeastern United States. Average concentration in intertidal sediments of Charleston Harbor and Winyah Bay, both located in South Carolina, U.S.A., was 413.8 ± 76.7 and 221.0 ± 25.6 particles/m2, respectively. Average concentration in the sea surface microlayer of Charleston Harbor and Winyah Bay was 6.6 ± 1.3 and 30.8 ± 12.1 particles/L, respectively. Concentration in intertidal sediments of the two estuaries was not significantly different (p = 0.58), however, Winyah Bay contained significantly more microplastics in the sea surface microlayer (p = 0.02). While microplastic concentration in these estuaries was comparable to that reported for other estuaries worldwide, Charleston Harbor contained a high abundance of black microplastic fragments believed to be tire wear particles. Our research is the first to survey microplastic contamination in Southeastern U.S. estuaries and to provide insight on the nature and extent of contamination in these habitats.

Sediments trapped within algal turfs play a key role in mediating ecosystem processes on reefs. Despite this ecological importance, our understanding of turf-bound sediments on coastal reefs is limited, even though such reefs are heavily exposed to terrestrial sediments. We compared algal turf sediment loads, composition and grain size distributions among coastal reefs along the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) and compared these to turf-bound sediments on reefs across the GBR. Algal turf sediment loads on coastal reefs were on average 9.4 times higher than offshore reefs (range 2.2–16.1 times). Among coastal reefs there was marked variability in the loads (797.87–3681.78 g m−2), composition (organics 1.0–8.9%; silicates 27.4–93.0%) and grain size of sediments. Our data highlight the potential variability in physical and ecological factors that control sediment dynamics on coastal reefs, including proximity to rivers, and reveal that turfs on coastal reefs are heavily influenced by sediments.
