Improvements in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon contamination in the Japan Sea: An interannual survey from 2008 to 2014
2019
Nagato, Edward G. | Makino, Fumiya | Nakase, Hisatoshi | Yoshida, Shota | Hayakawa, Kazuichi
The concentrations and distributions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were examined from 2008 to 2014 in the surface waters of the Japan Sea region. PAH concentrations decreased in the Japan Sea and Tsushima Strait; consistent with improvements in atmospheric pollution from Japan. There were no changes in the Korean Strait, suggesting a continual influx of contamination separate from the Japan Sea. At all sites, PAHs in the dissolved phase were greater than in the particulate phase. A separate survey in 2011 studied whether contamination in the Kuroshio current accounted for the contamination in the Tsushima strait and Japan Sea. PAH concentrations increased as waters moved into the Tsushima strait and the Japan Sea, suggesting inputs were local and not from the Kuroshio current. This was however confounded by the greater influence of particulate phase PAHs, which are likely deposited by seasonal desert storms.

2019
Testolin, Renan C. | Lima, André O.S. | Strutz, Jéssica M. | Corrêa, Rogério | Poyer-Radetski, Gabriel | Cesconetto, Lucas | Felde, Amira | Radetski, Claudemir M.
In this article we compare the efficiency of different methods of rapid-response remediation of beach sand contaminated with microbiological and/or organic matter. Contaminated beach sands were treated in laboratory by different treatment methods (i.e., oxidation, UV-photoexposure, or thermal methods) and the efficiency of disinfection and breakdown of organic matter were evaluated. Contaminants in raw and treated beach sands were measured by membrane filtration method, and by chemical and biochemical oxygen demand, and chromatographic analysis. All the methods tested were efficient for disinfecting beach sand with microbiological contamination, except for the UV-photoexposure method, which showed only moderate disinfection potential. Chemical degradation efficiency of beach sand contaminated by crude petroleum was higher with Fenton and Photo-Fenton (associated with the use of surfactant and ultrasound) methods. Photo-Fenton method improvement can increase the efficiency of contaminated beach sand treatment, and can also help beach managers when selecting which method to adopt for remedial actions.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous, synthetic anthropogenic chemicals known to infiltrate and persist in biological systems as a result of their stability and bioaccumulation potential. This study investigated 15 PFAS, including short-chain carboxylic and sulfonic acids, and their presence in a threatened herbivore, the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus). Seven of the 15 PFAS examined were detected in manatee plasma. Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) (ranging from 0.13 to 166 ng/g ww) and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) (ranging from 0.038 to 3.52 ng/g ww) were detected in every manatee plasma sample examined (n = 69), with differing medians across sampling sites in Florida, Crystal River (n = 39), Brevard County (n = 18), Everglades National Park (n = 8), and four samples (n = 4) from Puerto Rico. With an herbivorous diet and long life-span, the manatee provides a new perspective to monitoring PFAS contamination.

2019
Battisti, Corrado | Staffieri, Eleonora | Poeta, Gianluca | Sorace, Alberto | Luiselli, Luca | Amori, Giovanni
The interaction of anthropogenic litter (by incorporation litter in nests, ingestion, and entanglement) with birds was systematically reviewed using Google Scholar database. A ‘black-list’ of 258 species was compiled. Among them 206 (79.8%) were seabirds. Four seabird orders (Gaviiformes, Phaetontiformes, Procellariformes, Sphenisciformes) showed the highest percentage of interacting species. At family level, >70% of species of Gaviidae, Diomedeidae, Sulidae, Stercoraridae and Alcidae were involved in interactions with litter. We observed (i) a significant correlation between Scholar recurrences and species citations about anthropogenic litter only when considering seabirds; (ii) a low number of references before 1981 with a bimodal pattern showing a first peak in 1986–90 and a progressively increasing trend in the 2000s. Regarding the type of interaction, there was a significantly higher percentage of species involved in ingestion when compared to the percentage involved in entanglement. We suggest the use of consolidated standardized litter nomenclature and characterization and the adoption of a logical causal chain helping researchers in defining suitable frameworks.

2019
Frias, J.P.G.L. | Nash, Roisin
Polymer science is one of the most revolutionary research areas of the last century, instigated by the discovery of Bakelite, the first synthetic plastic. Plastic, once a revolutionary material, has gradually become a global environmental threat with ubiquitous distribution. The term ‘microplastics’ coined in 2004, is used to describe the smaller plastic particles recorded, however there is still no all-inclusive definition that accurately encompasses all criteria that could potentially describe what a microplastic is.Here, the authors focus on the currently reported methods for describing and identifying microplastics and propose a new definition that incorporates all the important descriptive properties of microplastics. This definition not only focuses on size and origin, but also considers physical and chemical defining properties. While this manuscript may promote debate, it aims to reach a consensus on a definition for microplastics which can be useful for research, reporting and legislative purposes.

Selenium and mercury were evaluated in tissues and stomachs of the dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus from two sites in the Southeastern Gulf of California. Hg levels were consistently low and exhibited the following patterns: muscle (0.14 ± 0.01 μg/g wet weight) followed by kidney (0.12 ± 0.02 μg/g), liver (0.11 ± 0.01 μg/g), and gonads (0.04 ± 0.00 μg/g). The maximum of Se was found in the kidney (5.60 ± 0.40 μg/g) and the minimum in muscle (0.60 ± 0.01 μg/g). All the Se:Hg molar ratios were between 3.7 and 697.1, with the minimum in muscle and the highest in gonads. The results indicate a contrasting behavior biomagnification of Hg and Se; smaller fish (<80 cm FL) did not exhibit biomagnification, in contrast with larger fish (>90 cm FL: 100% for Hg; 65% for Se). These results appear to be related to different feeding habits and availability of prey.

The present paper is a contribution to the first initiative of the Port Baseline Survey (PBS) for Non-indigenous species (NIS) in the Mediterranean Sea. It presents a report on the soft-bottom macrobenthos from the five Adriatic ports: Bari, Ancona (Italy), Koper (Slovenia), Pula, Rijeka (Croatia), with a focus on the presence and contribution of NIS to native assemblages. Out of 451 species identified, only four were common to all ports. A total of eight NIS were recorded, five in surveyed ports and three in the lagoon connected to the Port of Koper. The highest number of NIS was recorded in Bari, and the highest abundance in Ancona and Bari. Generally, the number, abundance and contribution of NIS seems too low to cause a substantial impact on native communities in surveyed ports. The suitability of methods adopted for PBS for soft-bottom NIS was discussed and suggestion for methodological improvement is provided.

2019
Anandkumar, A. | Nagarajan, R. | Prabakaran, K. | Bing, Chua Han | Rajaram, R. | Li, Jian | Du, Daolin
The concentration of nine trace elements were analyzed in the different tissue organs of commonly available crabs (Portunus sanguinolentus, Portunus pelagicus and Scylla serrate) and bivalve (Polymesoda erosa) species collected from the Miri coast, Borneo in order to evaluate the potential health risk by consumption of these aquatic organisms. Among the analyzed organs, metal accumulation was higher in the gill tissues. The essential (Cu and Zn) and non-essential (Pb and Cd) elements showed the highest (i.e. Zn) and lowest concentrations (i.e. Cd) in their tissue organs, respectively. The estimated daily intake and hazard indices of all metals in the muscle indicate that the measured values were below the provisional tolerable daily intake suggested by the joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives. Compared to Malaysian and international seafood guideline values the results obtained from the present study are lower than the permissible limits and safe for consumption.

Shrimps are the most widely and increasingly cultured crustaceans in land-based ponds in Taiwan. However, few studies have investigated the phthalate contamination of and insecticide residues in shrimp. In this study, we applied a validated method to analyze the phthalate and 18 insecticides residues in shrimp. A total of 46 samples of whiteleg, grass, or giant river shrimp were collected from aquafarms and production areas in Taiwan. We detected 0.02–0.70 mg/kg of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) in three shrimps; 0.02–0.03 mg/kg of chlorpyrifos in three shrimps, and 0.03 mg/kg of trichlorfon in one shrimp, indicating that 6.52% and 8.70% of the samples contained phthalate and insecticide residues, respectively. Furthermore, the assessed risk was negligible and indicated no immediate health risk associated with shrimp consumption. Continual monitoring of the residues in shrimps is critical for further assessment of possible effects on human health.

2019
Gündoğdu, Sedat | Yeşilyurt, İrem Nur | Erbaş, Celal
This study examines the extent of macroplastic pollution on Samandağ beach and the potential effects on green sea turtles during nesting. For this purpose, a total of 39 different turtle tracks were studied. Mean plastic concentration was found to be 19.5 ± 1.2 pcs m−2. Among the different types of crawling, the highest concentrations of plastics were found on the tracks of turtles that did not attempt to dig nests (25.9 ± 8.4 pcs m−2). In total, 7 different types of plastics (disposable, film, fishing-related, foam, fragments, miscellaneous, and textile) were found, with film-type plastics being the most prevalent (11 pcs m−2). Samandağ beach was found to be greatly more polluted than any other beach in the Mediterranean Sea. We concluded that this pollution can cause negative effects, especially entanglement and entrapment, on green sea turtle females and hatchlings.
