The prediction models of MWQI in mangrove and estuarine zones were constructed. The 2011–2015 data employed in this study entailed 13 parameters from six monitoring stations in West Malaysia. Spatial discriminant analysis (SDA) had recommended seven significant parameters to develop the MWQI which were DO, TSS, O&G, PO4, Cd, Cr and Zn. These selected parameters were then used to develop prediction models for the MWQI using artificial neural network (ANN) and multiple linear regressions (MLR). The SDA-ANN model had higher R2 value for training (0.9044) and validation (0.7113) results than SDA-MLR model and was chosen as the best model in mangrove estuarine zone. The SDA-ANN model had also demonstrated lower RMSE (5.224) than the SDA-MLR (12.7755). In summary, this work suggested that ANN was an effective tool to compute the MWQ in mangrove estuarine zone and a powerful alternative prediction model as compared to the other modelling methods.

Criteria for eutrophication related parameters to achieve and preserve good environmental status (GES) of the oligotrophic Israeli Mediterranean coast were proposed for nutrients, chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations. The criteria were derived from current conditions, the best choice for the area that has undergone large and irreversible ecological changes compared to the pristine background. A five-year data set (2010–2014, ca. 800 data points) was analyzed using statistical methods and best professional judgement. The coastal waters were divided into four provinces, data gaps were identified, and seasonal reference and threshold values for each province determined as the median and 1.5 times the median, respectively. Application of the derived criteria to data up to 2016 showed the coastal waters to be mainly in GES, with a few exceptions. Simplification of the proposed criteria for environmental management was addressed as well.

Increased sediment loads within algal turfs, can be highly detrimental to coral reef systems. However, significant knowledge gaps remain in relation to sediment dynamics, especially linking suspended sediments, sedimentation and turf-bound sediments. To examine these links, a series of different methods for quantifying suspended sediments, sedimentation and the accumulation of turf sediments were compared, simultaneously, on an inner-shelf reef. We revealed that the amount and composition of sediment quantified using different methods varied markedly, with commonly employed measures of sedimentation failing to accurately reflect patterns of sediment accumulation in turfs. Our results highlighted the propensity for turfs to trap and retain sediments, with turfs accumulating approximately 2.6 times more sediment than traps, and 6 times more sediment than SedPods, over a seven-day period. This study highlights the major, but often overlooked, role that algal turfs can play in sediment dynamics on coral reefs.

As part of a Comparative Risk Assessment (CRA) developed and reported previously, oil spill modeling of a hypothetical blowout at 1400 m in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico was performed to evaluate changes in oil exposures with alternative response options, i.e., combinations of mechanical recovery, in-situ burning, surface dispersant application and subsea dispersant injection (SSDI). To assess if conclusions from this study could be extended to other spill scenarios, sensitivities of the predicted oil fate and exposure metrics to location, release depth, oil and gas flow rate, gas content, orifice size, oil droplet size distribution, and biodegradation rates were examined. Results show that the fraction of oil surfacing is highly sensitive to oil droplet size distribution and depth of release. Across the simulations performed, SSDI use reduced oil droplet sizes released, thereby mitigating surface and shoreline oiling, volatile hydrocarbon exposures, and potential surface water column exposures.

As the main fluorescent substances in oils, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the basis of ultraviolet (UV)-induced fluorescence spectroscopy methods to detect oil films on the sea surface. The relative contents of PAHs in six crude oil samples and their effects on ultraviolet fluorescence spectra were studied. The PAHs were divided into four categories according to their fluorescence characteristics. Naphthalene series dominated the fluorescence spectra, which led to a main peak at 320–350 nm, but this showed no relationship with PAH content. The six oil samples could not be distinguished by differences in the fluorescence spectra in this range, but could be distinguished by the fluorescence spectra in the 350–380 nm band. The relative contents of dibenzothiophene and phenanthrene series showed significant positive correlations (R² = 0.96) with fluorescence intensity. Fluorescence spectroscopy combined with GC–MS can be used to distinguish and identify crude oils.

This work is a first contribution to the knowledge of natural radionuclides (²²⁶Ra, ²³⁸U, ⁴⁰K, and ²³²Th) activities in phosphate rock (NORM), phosphogypsum, and phosphogypsum foam (TENORM) from the coastal fertilizer plants of Gabes (Southeastern Tunisia) and the assessment of their radiation hazards on human health and the surrounding environment. In the three studied materials, activities were found to be in the range of 35.4 (⁴⁰K)–375.1 (²²⁶Ra), 10.0 (⁴⁰K)–220.2 (²²⁶Ra), and 79.2 (²³²Th)–1168.6 Bq kg⁻¹ (²²⁶Ra), respectively. Considering the studied radionuclides and materials, the corresponding decreasing activity orders were found to be ²²⁶Ra > ²³⁸U > ⁴⁰K > ²³²Th and PGF > PR > PG, respectively. All human health hazard indices exceeded the worldwide recommended safety limits, which show that the workers in Gabes phosphate fertilizer plants as well as the neighboring human community may potentially be exposed to significant radiation, which may cause several diseases and malformations. It is therefore recommended to avoid and/or reduce the potential fertilizer industry radioactive impact in the area.

Microbiological sea water quality is a public health problem that has serious repercussions in the tourism and economy of Colombia. This study determines the concentrations of Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis and Clostridium perfringens at eleven beach water points and seven streams along the coast of the Department of Atlántico, Colombia. In seawater, total E. coli, E. faecalis and C. perfringens concentrations were found between 16 and 572 cfu/100 mL, 7–450 cfu/100 ml and 2–125 cfu/100 ml, respectively. The highest counts were observed mainly on urbanised beaches and in correspondence with streams whose waters had a high concentration of faecal origin microorganisms, which represent a serious health risk factor for bathers. Relevant efforts have to be addressed to improve the microbiological quality of these beaches by the establishment of efficient wastewater management programs aimed at enhancing the efficiency of the local treatment plant and the control of illegal sewage pouring onto the coast.

Micropollutants or contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are released into the environment from a wide variety of sources. Due to the adverse effect on human health, micropollutant-containing wastewater needs to be treated before its discharge. A number of conventional physicochemical methods have been extensively studied for micropollutant degradation. However, owing to their one or more disadvantages, biological treatment using suitable microorganisms is of recent interest. Numerous bacteria and fungi are capable of degrading these micropollutants even at high concentrations. However, in order for the biological treatment to be commercially viable and industrially scalable, bioprocess development with efficient bioreactor systems is highly essential. This paper reviews state-of-the-art techniques for the removal of micropollutants by conventional biological systems such as activated sludge process, biofilm-based reactor, and trickling bed bioreactor. However, compared with conventional systems, advanced biological systems, namely two-phase partitioning bioreactor, membrane-based reactor, and cell-immobilized bioreactor systems, have not been examined and, hence, need detailed exploration. Such advanced treatment systems are capable of tolerating high pollutant load and are also able to treat highly water insoluble pollutants. Furthermore, hybrid systems comprising of a combination of different physicochemical and biological processes are discussed in this paper, which are not only capable of improving the treatment efficiency but also eliminate any accumulation of the toxic by-product produced during the treatment. Among the different hybrid systems, a combination of different biological systems is found to be highly efficient in treating micropollutant-containing wastewater. Finally, scope for future research prospects in the field are derived and addressed in details.

The Bilbao estuary (SE Bay of Biscay) is a recovering ecosystem whose sediments are still contaminated. They represent a potential risk for the biota including benthic and demersal species living in direct contact with the sediment. In this context, the present study aims to survey trends of the health status of the Bilbao estuary based on sediment chemistry and sole (Solea spp.) histopathology. Monitoring campaigns were carried out every autumn from 2011 to 2017 along the estuary. Contaminant levels were measured in sediments; liver, gills and gonads of juvenile fish were collected for histopathology. Overall, contaminant levels fluctuated throughout the years, with highest values recorded in the earlier years of the study period. Sole histopathology showed alterations of mild severity. Results permitted to assess the environmental health status of the Bilbao estuary during 7 years, although no clear temporal trend was detected. Longer-term monitoring programmes are necessary to confirm the ecosystem recovery.

A community-based participatory research was utilized to address the coastal community's concern regarding Deepwater Horizon oil contamination of seafood. Therefore, we analyzed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), major toxic constituents of crude oil, in the seafood collected from gulf coast (Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi) during December 2011–February 2014. PAHs were extracted from edible part of shrimp, oysters, and crabs by the QuEChERS/dsPE procedure and analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The total PAHs data were further analyzed using the General Linear Mixed Model procedure of the SAS (Version 9.3, SAS Institute, Inc., Cary, NC) statistical software. Brown shrimp showed statistically significant differences in PAHs levels with respect to time and locations while white shrimp showed differences at various time points. PAHs levels in oyster and crab samples were not statistically different at the Type I error of 0.05. Overall, the PAHs levels are far below FDA levels of concern for human consumption.
