Six years of data (2012–2017) at an urban site-Srinagar in the Northwest Himalaya were used to investigate temporal variability, meteorological influences, source apportionment and potential source regions of BC. The daily BC concentration varies from 0.56 to 40.16 μg/m³ with an inter-annual variation of 4.20–7.04 μg/m³ and is higher than majority of the Himalayan urban locations. High mean annual BC concentration (6.06 μg/m³) is attributed to the high BC observations during winter (8.60 μg/m³) and autumn (8.31 μg/m³) with a major contribution from Nov (13.88 μg/m³) to Dec (13.4 μg/m³). A considerable inter-month and inter-seasonal BC variability was observed owing to the large changes in synoptic meteorology. Low BC concentrations were observed in spring and summer (3.14 μg/m³ and 3.21 μg/m³), corresponding to high minimum temperatures (6.6 °C and 15.7 °C), wind speed (2.4 and 1.6 m/s), ventilation coefficient (2262 and 2616 m²/s), precipitation (316.7 mm and 173.3 mm) and low relative humidity (68% and 62%). However, during late autumn and winter, frequent temperature inversions, shallow PBL (173–1042 m), stagnant and dry weather conditions cause BC to accumulate in the valley. Through the observation period, two predominant diurnal BC peaks were observed at ⁓9:00 h (7.75 μg/m³) and ⁓21:00 h (6.67 μg/m³). Morning peak concentration in autumn (11.28 μg/m³) is ⁓2–2.5 times greater than spring (4.32 μg/m³) and summer (5.23 μg/m³), owing to the emission source peaks and diurnal boundary layer height. Diurnal BC concentration during autumn and winter is 65% and 60% higher than spring and summer respectively. During autumn and winter, biomass burning contributes approximately 50% of the BC concentration compared to only 10% during the summer. Air masses transport considerable BC from the Middle East and northern portions of South Asia, especially the Indo-Gangetic Plains, to Srinagar, with serious consequences for climate, human health, and the environment.

Trivalent chromium [Cr(III)] and tannins serve as necessary substances in leather processing and coexist in tannery site, which lead to the chromium contamination in site soil when disposed improperly. However, coexisting tannins are very likely to complex with Cr(III) and affect its properties, ultimately changing the mobility of chromium in soil. In this study, tannic acid (TA) was selected to investigate the complexation with Cr(III) and the influence on the solubility and sorption of Cr(III) in soils. Then, the transport behavior and mechanism of Cr(III)-TA complexes in soil was clarified. Dialysis results showed that the increase of TA concentration and solution pH promoted the formation of complexed Cr(III). The results of UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations indicated that the adjacent ionized phenolic hydroxyls in TA functioned as the binding sites with Cr(III) to form the Cr–O bonds and the degree of complexation increased with pH. The Cr(III)-TA complexes had higher solubility than free Cr(III) at pH ≥ 6.0. Batch sorption experiments demonstrated that the sorption capacity of Cr(III)-TA to soils with different pH was always lower than that of free Cr(III). These reasons led to the stronger mobility of Cr(III)-TA in soil columns than Cr(III). Our research reveals that the enhanced mobility of Cr(III) in soils coexisting with TA.

Soil Cd and Zn contamination has become a serious environmental problem. This work explored the performance of wood vinegar (WV) in enhancing the phytoextraction of Cd/Zn by hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii Hance. Rhizosphere chemical properties, enzyme activities and bacterial community were analyzed to determine the mechanisms of metal accumulation in this process. Results demonstrated that, after 120 days growth, different times dilution of WV increased the shoot biomass of S. alfredii by 85.2%–148%. In addition, WV application significantly increased soil available Cd and Zn by lowing soil pH, which facilitated plant uptake. The optimal Cd and Zn phytoextraction occurred from the 100 times diluted WV (D100), which increased the Cd and Zn extraction by 188% and 164%, compared to CK. The 100 and 50 times diluted WV significantly increased soil total and available carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, and enhancing enzyme activities of urease, acid phosphatase, invertase and protease by 10.1–21.4%, 29.1–42.7%,12.2–38.3% and 26.8–85.7%, respectively, compared to CK. High-throughput sequencing revealed that the D 100 significantly increased the bacterial diversity compared to CK. Soil bacterial compositions at phylum, family and genera level were changed by WV addition. Compared to CK, WV application increased the relative abundances of genus with plant growth promotion and metal mobilization function such as, Bacillus, Gemmatimonas, Streptomyces, Sphingomonas and Polycyclovorans, which was positively correlated to biomass, Cd/Zn concentrations and extractions by S. alfredii. Structural equation modeling analysis showed that, soil chemical properties, enzyme activities and bacterial abundance directly or indirectly contributed to the biomass promotion, Cd, and Zn extraction by S. alfredii. To sum up, WV improved phytoextraction efficiency by enhancing plant growth, Cd and Zn extraction and increasing soil nutrients, enzyme activities, and modifying bacterial community.

Biological invasions and continued salinization of freshwater are two global issues with largely serious ecological consequences. Increasing salinity in freshwater systems, as an environmental stressor, may negatively affect normal life activities in fish. It has been documented that salinity limits the invasive success of alien species by mediating physiological and life-history performances, however, there are few studies on how salinity affects its invasive process via altered behaviors. Using wild-caught invasive western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) as animal model, in this study, we asked whether gradual increasing salinity affects behaviors (personality and mate choice decision here), life-history traits, as well as the correlation between them by exposing G. affinis to three levels salinity (freshwater, 10 and 20‰). Results showed that, with increased salinity, male tended to be shyer, less active, less sociable, and reduced desire to mate, and female tended to be shyer, less active and lost preferences for the larger male. Furthermore, across salinity treatments, male exhibited reduced body fat content and rising reproduction allocation, however, pregnant female revealed diametrically opposed trends. In addition, the correlation between life-history traits and behaviors was only identified in pregnant female. It seems that either salinity or life-history traits directly affects mosquitofish behaviors. In summary, our results partially emphasize the harmful consequences of salinity on both life-history traits and behavioral performances. These findings provide a novel perspective on how salinity potentially affect fish fitness via altering personalities, mate choice decisions, as well as body condition, and hence supports the idea that salinity could affect the spread of invasive mosquitofish.

Copper has become one of the most important heavy metal pollutants in the environment because of its wide application and high toxicity, but research on water quality criteria (WQCs) on copper is limited, especially the derivation of seawater WQC. In addition, the toxicity of copper in the seawater system is affected by various environmental factors. Therefore, establishing a WQC that meets the characteristics of the regional environment is a top priority. The correlations between four factors of temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and the toxic effect values of copper were analyzed in this study, and the temperature was determined as the most influential factor among the four factors in the Bohai Sea. A specific correlation between temperature and the toxic effects of copper was identified, and WQCs were derived based on the identified correlation and the variations of the Bohai Sea's temperature in different seasons by species sensitivity distribution (SSD) method. Under the condition of the winter, spring, autumn, and summer with an average water temperature of 0.09, 15.96, 17.83, and 24.87 °C, the obtained short-term water quality criteria (SWQCs) were 44.29, 4.70, 4.31, and 3.33 μg/L; the long-term water quality criteria (LWQCs) were 18.14, 1.93, 1.77 and 1.36 μg/L. The findings indicated the importance of introducing specific environmental conditions during the derivation process. This work could provide valuable information for pollution prevention and aquatic life protection in the Bohai Sea and provide a valuable reference for the derivation of criteria in other regions alike.

Wildfires are occurring worldwide with greater frequency and intensity. Wildfires, as well as other sources of air pollution including environmental tobacco smoke, household biomass combustion, agricultural burning, and vehicular emissions, release large amounts of toxic substances into the atmosphere. The ocular surface is constantly exposed to the ambient air and is hence vulnerable to damage from air pollutants. This review describes the detrimental effects of wildfire smoke and air pollution on the ocular surface and resultant signs and symptoms. The latest relevant evidence is synthesised and critically evaluated. A mechanism for the pathophysiology of ocular surface damage will be proposed considering the existing literature on respiratory effects of air pollution. Current strategies to reduce human exposure to air pollutants are discussed and specific possible approaches to protect the ocular surface and manage air pollution induced ocular surface damage are suggested. Further avenues of research are suggested to understand how acute and chronic air pollution exposure affects the ocular surface including the short and long-term implications.

There has been an increasing interest in the pollution caused by meso- and microplastics (MMPs) in terrestrial ecosystems. Mulch film was once considered to be the most important source of MMPs in the mulching cultivated soil. However, the academic community has not given sufficient scientific evidence. In this study, stratified random sampling method was used to selectively interview households in Hebei province, China (400 households, 20 villages, 5 counties). Finally, household characteristics and mulch film use behavior of 41 households were collected, and corresponding soil samples were sampled. The results showed that 1) the abundance of MMPs was 29.3 ± 33.1 items·kg⁻¹ (DW) and the particle size of MMPs was 2.95 × 10³±1.75 × 10³ μm, and the proportion of MMPs derived from Polyethylene (PE) was only 18.8%; 2) the mass of MMPs was 2.90 ± 3.72 mg kg⁻¹ (DW) and the proportion of PE MMPs was 43.75%, which has the highest mass percentage; 3) After controlling the endogenous and dummy variables, the use history of mulch film (HistMF) was found to be positively correlated to the abundance of MMPs and inversely correlated to the particle size, but nor with the mass of MMPs; 4) Regarding the heterogeneous characteristics of MMPs, including particle size, color, shape, and type, the findings found the absence of a significant correlation between HistMF and the abundance and mass of PE. In summary, mulch-derived MMPs are not the primary source of MMPs in the mulching cultivated soil in terms of abundance but probably be in terms of mass.

Selenium (Se) plays an indispensable role in minimizing cadmium (Cd) hazards for organisms. However, their potential interactions and co-exposure risk in the naturally Se–Cd enriched paddy field ecosystem are poorly understood. In this study, rice plants with rhizosphere soils sampled from the Enshi seleniferous region, China, were investigated to resolve this confusion. Here, translocation and bioaccumulation of Cd showed some abnormal patterns in the system of soil-rice plants. Roots had the highest bioaccumulation factors of Cd (range: 0.30–57.69; mean: 11.86 ± 14.32), and the biomass of Cd in grains (range: 1.44–127.70 μg, mean: 36.55 ± 36.20 μg) only accounted for ∼10% of the total Cd in whole plants (range: 14.67–1363.20 μg, mean: 381.25 ± 387.57 μg). The elevated soil Cd did not result in the increase of Cd concentrations in rice grains (r² = 0.03, p > 0.05). Most interestingly, the opposite distribution between Se and Cd in rice grains was found (r² = 0.24, p < 0.01), which is contrary to the positive correlation for Se and Cd in soil (r² = 0.46, p < 0.01). It is speculated that higher Se (0.85–11.46 μg/g), higher Se/Cd molar ratios (mean: 5.42 ≫1; range: 1.50–12.87), and higher proportions of reductive Se species (IV, 0) of the Enshi acidic soil may have the stronger capacity of favoring the occurrence of Se binding to Cd ions by forming Cd–Se complexes (Se²⁻ + Cd²⁺ =CdSe) under reduction conditions during flooding, and hence change the Cd translocation from soil to roots. Furthermore, the negative correlation (r² = 0.25, p < 0.05) between the Cd translocation factor (TFwₕₒₗₑ gᵣₐᵢₙₛ/ᵣₒₒₜ) and the roots Se indicates that Cd translocation from the roots to rice grains was suppressed, possibly by the interaction of Se and Cd. This study inevitably poses a challenge for the traditional risk assessment of Cd and Se in the soils-crops-consumers continuum, especially in the seleniferous area.

Low sulfur fuel oils (LSFOs) with less than 0.5% sulfur content have been mandated for marine vessels by the International Maritime Organization since 2020. However, owing to the low dispersibility and high viscosity of LSFOs, their oceanic spills are difficult to clean using conventional response systems. In this study, we propose a superhydrophilic and hygroscopic ramie to clean spilled LSFO. To this end, a raw ramie fiber, which is intrinsically hydrophobic, was treated using a mild alkali to remove its waxy, rough, and gummy veneer and reveal a smooth surface. This substantially improved its hygroscopic nature, superhydrophilicity, and water-retention, while preserving its mechanical durability in dry and wet environments. The hygroscopic ramie exhibited underwater superoleophobicity and self-cleaning abilities against highly adhesive LSFOs. Two proofs-of-concept are demonstrated in this study—an oil-proof glove for maximizing oil repellency and a direct oil-scooping device for simple and continuous recovery of spilled oil with high efficiency.

Wang, Hailin | Hao, Run | Nie, Lei | Zhang, Xin | Zhang, Yuanxun
This study investigated the characteristics of air multi-pollutants emitted during typical electronic waste (e-waste) dismantling processes and assessed their risks to the environment and human health. Concentrations of total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a typical e-waste dismantling workshop were 137 μg/m³, 135 ng/m³ and 42 ng/m³, respectively, which were lower than those without emission control measures. The partial removal of pollutants due to the emission control measures also decreased the ozone formation potential and non-cancer risk of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In the workshop, the lifetime cancer risk (LCR) of VOCs (8.1 × 10⁻⁵) was close to the recommended values. Conversely, the LCR of PAHs (3.6 × 10⁻⁵) and the total exposure index of PBDEs (19 ng/d) were remarkably lower than the recommended values of 10⁻³ and that without emission control measures, respectively. Meanwhile, the concentrations of TVOCs, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs), PBDEs, and PAHs in the outlet were approximately 10–30 times higher than those in the workshop. In addition, the LCR of TVOCs within a 5-km radius area remained higher than the accepted value (10⁻⁶), and the inhalation exposure risk of PCDD/Fs within a 20-km radius area was five times higher than the recommended value. Therefore, the emissions from e-waste recycling processes should be considered as an important source of air pollution, and more efficient control measures should be taken in the future.
