Air pollution has become a major issue in China, especially for traffic-related pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO₂). Current studies in China at the national scale were less focused on NO₂ exposure and consequent health effects than fine particulate exposure, mainly due to a lack of high-quality exposure models for accurate NO₂ predictions over a long period. We developed an advanced modeling framework that incorporated multisource, high-quality predictor data (e.g., satellite observations [Ozone Monitoring Instrument NO₂, TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument NO₂, and Multi-Angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction aerosol optical depth], chemical transport model simulations, high-resolution geographical variables) and three independent machine learning algorithms into an ensemble model. The model contains three stages: (1) filling missing satellite data; (2) building an ensemble model and predicting daily NO₂ concentrations from 2013 to 2019 across China at 1×1 km² resolution; (3) downscaling the predictions to finer resolution (100 m) at the urban scale. Our model achieves a high performance in terms of cross-validation to assess the agreement of the overall (R² = 0.72) and the spatial (R² = 0.85) variations of the NO₂ predictions over the observations. The model performance remains moderately good when the predictions are extrapolated to the previous years without any monitoring data (CV R² > 0.68) or regions far away from monitors (CV R² > 0.63). We identified a clear decreasing trend of NO₂ exposure from 2013 to 2019 across the country with the largest reduction in suburban and rural areas. Our downscaled model further improved the prediction ability by 4%–14% in some megacities and captured substantial NO₂ variations within 1-km grids in the urban areas, especially near major roads. Our model provides flexibility at both temporal and spatial scales and can be applied to exposure assessment and epidemiological studies with various study domains (e.g., national or citywide) and settings (e.g., long-term and short-term).

Xiangjiang (XJ) is a typical urban inland river that serves as a drinking water source, which may be affected by the currently used organochlorine pesticides (CUOCPs) originating from agricultural activities in the vicinity. On this basis, this study comprehensively explored the occurrence and distribution characteristics of CUOCPs in surface water and sediments under long-term precipitation and subsequent floods. Considering the low concentration of CUOCPs in water, a technique combining high-throughput organic analysis with high-volume solid phase extraction (High-throat/Hi-volume SPE) was introduced for effective analysis of CUCOPs. The results showed that the concentration of CUOCPs in the water and sediments of XJ ranged from 2.33 to 6.40 ng L⁻¹ (average of 3.93 ± 1.15 ng L⁻¹) and from 1.52 to 21.2 ng g⁻¹ (average of 6.60 ± 4.31 ng g⁻¹ dw), respectively. The distribution of CUOCPs in water was consistent throughout XJ, but that in sediments was not uniform, indicating a stronger impact of floods on water than on sediments. Water-sediment partition coefficients were generally >2 L g⁻¹, showing a tendency of CUOCP dominance in sediments. The results of principal component analysis and cluster analysis showed that the occurrence of CUOCPs is significantly affected by exogenous disturbance, which could be flood events; meanwhile, clusters of CUOCPs were found in both water and sediments in the source-limited middle reaches in urban areas. Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that CUOCP occurrences were not positively correlated with nutrient elements (nitrogen and phosphorus), but related to pH and dissolved oxygen (DO), indicating complex sources.

Prenatal perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) exposure has been linked to adverse birth outcomes, but the underlying mechanism has yet to be elucidated. DNA methylation changes in mesoderm-specific transcript (MEST) imprinted gene may be a mechanism of the prenatal exposure effects of PFASs on fetal growth. The aim was to investigate the prenatal PFASs exposure effects on DNA methylation changes in MEST imprinted gene involved in fetal growth. Among 486 mother-infant pairs from the Taiwan Birth Panel Study, PFASs and DNA methylation levels at 5 CpG sites of MEST promoter region were measured in cord blood. Univariable and multivariable linear regressions were performed to estimate the associations between prenatal PFAS exposure, MEST DNA methylation levels, and child birth outcomes. Mediation analysis was performed to examine the potential pathway of MEST methylation between PFASs and birth outcomes. We found that higher prenatal perfluorooctyl sulfonate (PFOS) exposure was significantly associated with lower methylation levels at 5 CpG sites of MEST promoter region (an adjusted β range: −1.56, −2.22). Significant negative associations were also found between MEST methylation levels and child birth weight. Furthermore, the associations between PFOS and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) exposure and MEST methylation levels were more profound in girls than in boys. The mediated effect of average MEST methylation level between PFOS exposure and birth weight was 18.3 (95% CI = 2.1, 40.2; p = 0.014). The direct effect of PFOS exposure to birth weight independent to average MEST methylation level was −93.2 (95% CI = −170.5, −17.8; p = 0.018). In conclusion, our results suggest that prenatal PFAS exposure, especially PFOS, is associated with lower methylation levels at MEST promoter region, which not only leverages the role of imprinted gene in ensuring the integrity of fetal growth but also provides a potential mechanism for evaluating the prenatal exposure effect.

The airway macrophages carbon loading (AMCL) has been suggested to be a biomarker of the long-term exposure to air pollution; however, to date no study has characterized AMCL for the pregnancy period. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the determinants of AMCL during pregnancy in Iran, a middle-income country. This study was based on a sample of 234 pregnant women with term and normal vaginal delivery who were residing in Sabzevar, Iran (2019). We characterized 35 potential determinants of personal exposure to air pollution for each participant, including six personal, nine indoor, and 20 home-outdoor factors. We applied Deletion/Substitution/Addition algorithm to identify the most relevant determinants that could predict AMCL levels. The median (IQR) of AMCL level was 0.12 (0.30) μm² with a successful sputum induction in 82.9% (194) of participants. Ambient residential PM₂.₅ levels were positively associated with higher AMCL levels. On the other hand, increased residential distance to the traffic lights, squares and ring-roads, the duration of opening window per day, and opening window during cooking were inversely associated with AMCL levels. Our findings provide novel insights on the different personal, indoor, and outdoor determinants of personal exposure to air pollution during pregnancy in a middle-income country.

Urban rivers play a vital role in global methane (CH₄) emissions. Previous studies have mainly focused on CH₄ concentrations in urban rivers with a large amount of organic sediment. However, to date, the CH₄ concentration in gravel-bed urban rivers with very little organic sediment has not been well documented. Here, we collected water samples from an oxic urban river (Xin'an River, China; annual mean dissolved oxygen concentration was 9.91 ± 1.99 mg L⁻¹) with a stony riverbed containing very little organic sediment. Dissolved CH₄ concentrations were measured using a membrane inlet mass spectrometer to investigate whether such rivers potentially act as an important source of atmospheric CH₄ and the corresponding potential drivers. The results showed that CH₄ was supersaturated at all sampling sites in the five sampling months. The mean CH₄ saturation ratio (ratio of river dissolved CH₄ concentration to the corresponding CH₄ concentration that is in equilibrium with the atmosphere) across all sampling sites in the five sampling months was 204 ± 257, suggesting that the Xin'an River had a large CH₄ emission potential. The CH₄ concentration was significantly higher in the downstream river than in the upstream river (p < 0.05), which suggested that human activities along the river greatly impacted the CH₄ level. Statistical analyses and incubation experiments indicated that algae can produce CH₄ under oxic conditions, which may contribute to the significantly higher CH₄ concentration in August 2020 (p < 0.001) when a severe algal bloom occurred. Furthermore, other factors, such as heavy rainfall events, dissolved organic carbon concentration, and water temperature, may also be vital factors affecting CH₄ concentration. Our study enhances the understanding of dissolved CH₄ dynamics in oxic urban rivers with very little organic sediment and further proposes feasible measures to control the CH₄ concentration in urban rivers.

The salinization of the global freshwater system caused by various human activities and climate change has become a common problem threatening freshwater biodiversity and resources, which may affect a variety of species of cladocerans at individual and population levels. In order to comprehensively evaluate the impact of salinization on different-sized cladocerans at individual and population levels, we exposed two species of cladocerans with obvious body size difference, Daphnia magna and Moina macrocopa, to seven salinities (0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.10, 0.12 M), recorded individual life history traits and population growth dynamics, and used multiple mechanistic models to fit the data. At the individual level, the median effect concentration of survival time, total offspring per female, and number of broods of D. magna were significantly higher than those of M. macrocopa. At the population level, the decrease in carrying capacity of D. magna with increasing salinity was significantly less than that of M. macrocopa. At the same salinity treatment, the integrated biomarker response indexes value of M. macrocopa is higher than that of D. magna. Therefore, it was further inferred that the sensitivity of small-sized species M. macrocopa to salinity stress is significantly higher than that of big-sized species D. magna. Thus, freshwater salinization may result in the replacement of smaller salt-intolerant cladocerans with larger salt-tolerant cladocerans, which may have dramatic effects on freshwater communities and ecosystems. Additionally, the increase of salinity had a greater impact on the population level of D. magna and M. macrocopa than on the individual level, indicating that population level of cladocerans was more susceptible to salinity stress. Experiments only based on individuals may underestimate the ecologically related changes in populations and communities, thus understanding the impact of salinization on freshwater systems needs to consider multiple ecological levels.

A portable emission sampling system was used to perform on-site measurements of the emission factors (EFs; quantities of pollutants emitted per unit of energy consumed) of 29 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) for five types of marine vessels using light diesel in Hainan Province, China. Both gaseous- and particulate-phase PAHs from vessel emissions were sampled and measured using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and the PAH EFs were calculated based on the carbon mass balance method. The average EFs of gaseous- and particulate-phase PAHs were 6.2 ± 7.8 and 17 ± 26 mg/kg, with naphthalene (NAP) and phenanthrene (PHE) dominating the gaseous- and particulate-phase PAH emissions, respectively. Among the five types of vessels, the EFs for small fishing boats were significantly higher than those for other types of vessels, and the lowest EFs were found for tug boats. Composition profiles and typical isomer ratios of PAHs were calculated for five types of vessels. Particulate-phase PAHs accounted for 63 ± 16% of the total emissions of 29 PAH species, and the particulate/gaseous-phase partitioning of PAHs was dominated by organic carbon (OC) absorption rather than black carbon (BC) adsorption. Emission factors of PAHs under different activity conditions were measured and calculated, and relatively higher EFs were found in the maneuvering mode for medium fishing boats and in the operating mode for engineering vessels. No significant differences were found among the PAH composition profiles under different activity conditions.

The pollution of energetic compounds (ECs) in military ranges has become the focus of worldwide attention. However, few studies on the contamination of ECs at Chinese military ranges have been reported to date. In this study, two different types of military demolition range in China, Dunhua (DH) and Taiyuan (TY), were investigated and the ECs in their soils were determined. 10 ECs were detected at both ranges. While all the contamination characteristics were distinct, 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) was the most abundant contamination source in soils at DH range, with an average concentration of 1106 mg kg⁻¹ and a maximum concentration of 34,083 mg kg⁻¹. Hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) and two mono-amino degradation products of TNT were also found to have high concentrations, with potential ecological and human health risks. In contrast, the concentrations of ECs in soils of TY range were much lower. The content of RDX was most significant, with average and maximum concentrations of 7.8 and 158 mg kg⁻¹, respectively. However, the potential threat to human health of 2,4-dinitrotoluene and 2,6-dinitrotoluene in soils at both ranges should not be ignored. The differences in pollution characteristics of the ECs at DH and TY are closely related to the types and amounts of the munitions destroyed. Moreover, the spatial distribution of ECs at the demolition ranges was extremely heterogeneous, which may be attributed to the use of open burning / open detonation and the non-homogeneous composition of the munitions.

Coral reefs are amongst the most biodiverse ecosystems on earth, but are significantly impacted by agricultural runoff. Despite herbicides being commonly detected in coastal waters, the possibility of herbicide accumulation in coral reef species has largely been overlooked. We investigate the accumulation of several herbicides in five species of coral reef invertebrates collected from ten sites along the Maputaland coast, South Africa. Multiple herbicide residues were detected in 95% of the samples, with total average concentrations across sites ranging between 25.2 ng g⁻¹ to 51.3 ng g⁻¹ dw. Acetochlor, alachlor and hexazinone were the predominant herbicides detected at all sites, with atrazine and simazine detected less frequently. Significant interactive effects were detected between sites nested in reef complex crossed with species, based on multiple and total herbicide concentrations. In general, multivariate herbicide concentrations varied significantly between species within and across most sites. Contrastingly, the concentrations of the different herbicides and that of total herbicide did not differ between conspecifics at most sites nested in their respective reef complexes. On average, highest total herbicide concentrations were measured in soft coral (Sarcophyton glaucum; 90.4 ± 60 ng g⁻¹ and Sinularia gravis; 42.7 ± 25 ng g⁻¹) and sponge (Theonela swinhoei; 39.0 ± 40 ng g⁻¹) species, while significantly lower concentrations were detected in hard corals (Echinopora hirsutissima; 10.5 ± 5.9 ng g⁻¹ and Acropora austera; 5.20 ± 4.5 ng g⁻¹) at most sites. Agricultural runoff entering the ocean via the uMfolozi-St Lucia Estuary and Maputo Bay are likely sources of herbicide contamination to coral reefs in the region. There is an urgent need to assess the long-term effects of herbicide exposure on coral reef communities.

Urban ecosystems and remnant habitat 'islands' therein, provide important strongholds for many wildlife species including those of conservation significance. However, the persistence of these habitats can be undermined if their structure and function are too severely disrupted. Urban wetlands, specifically, are usually degraded by a monoculture of invasive vegetation, disrupted hydrology, and chronic-contamination from a suite of anthropogenic pollutants. Top predators—as bioindicators—can be used to assess and monitor the health of these ecosystems. We measured eight health parameters (e.g., parasites, wounds and scars, tail loss and body condition) in a wetland top predator, the western tiger snake, Notechis scutatus occidentalis. For three years, snakes were sampled across four wetlands along an urban gradient. For each site, we used GIS software to measure the area of different landscapes and calculate an urbanisation–landscape score. Previously published research on snake contamination informed our calculations of a metal-pollution index for each site. We used generalised linear mixed models to assess the relationship between all health parameters and site variables. We found the metal-pollution index to have the most significant association with poor body condition. Although parasitism, tail loss and wounds differed among sites, none of these parameters influenced body condition. Additionally, the suite of health parameters suggested differing health status among sites; however, our measure of contemporary landscape urbanisation was never a significant predictor variable. Our results suggest that the health of wetland predators surrounding a rapidly growing city may be offset by higher levels of environmental pollution.
