Spatio-temporal trends and body size differences of OCPs and PCBs in Laeonereis culveri (Polychaeta: Nereididae) from Southwest Atlantic estuaries
2018
Díaz-Jaramillo, M. | Laitano, M.V. | Gonzalez, M. | Miglioranza, K.S.B.
Southwest Atlantic (SWA) estuaries have been historically impacted by industrial and agricultural activities that represent an important source of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Intraspecific differences in OCPs and PCBs levels were evaluated in the benthic polychaete Laeonereis culveri from SWA estuaries (Samborombón; Mar Chiquita; Quequén Grande and Bahía Blanca) at different spatio-temporal scales. Regarding inter- and intra-estuarine spatial comparisons polychaetes showed significant differences in OCPs/PCBs levels (p < 0.05) being DDTs, endosulfan, penta- and hexa-CBs homologues the most representative compounds. Intra-estuarine comparisons also showed significant differences in terms of seasonality and body size (p < 0.05). OCPs/PCBs concentrations were negatively correlated with animal weight, but this covariable was not relevant on differences observed. OCPs/PCBs levels in polychaetes showed strong relationships with those of sediments, being suitable for estuarine biomonitoring studies. Seasonal and body-size differences found in OCPs and PCBs levels in tissues reveal the importance of these factors for intra-estuarine monitoring.

2018
Annabi, Ali | Bardelli, Roberta | Vizzini, Salvatrice | Mancinelli, Giorgio
This study provides a baseline assessment of cadmium, copper, iron, manganese, lead, and zinc concentrations in muscles, gills, and exoskeleton of the Lessepsian blue swimming crab Portunus segnis captured in the Gulf of Gabès (Southern Mediterranean Sea, Tunisia) in November 2015. Furthermore, the species' trophic position is estimated using CN stable isotope analysis. The exoskeleton showed the lowest metal contents; in soft tissues, the essential Cu, Fe, and Zn and the non-essential Cd, Mn, and Pb showed the highest and lowest concentrations, respectively. The crab was characterized by a trophic position of 3.32, confirming its carnivorous trophic habits. Compared with literature data on invertebrate and fish species from the same area, Cd and Pb resulted remarkably low in the crab's soft tissues, while a food web-scale dilution effect was indicated. The need of a comprehensive assessment of the ecological impact of Portunus segnis in invaded Mediterranean waters is discussed.

2018
Bauer-Civiello, Anne | Loder, Jennifer | Hamann, Mark
The prevalence of marine debris in global oceans is negatively impacting the marine environment. In Australia, marine debris has been an increasing concern for sensitive marine environments, such as coral reefs. Citizen science can contribute data to explore patterns of subtidal marine debris loads. This study uses data from Reef Check Australia to describe patterns of debris abundance on reef tourism sites in two Queensland regions, the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) and Southeast Queensland (SEQ). Debris was categorized into three groups, fishing line, fishing net, and general rubbish. Overall, debris abundance across reefs was relatively low (average 0.5–3.3 items per survey (400 m2)), but not absent on remote reefs surveyed in the GBR region. Highest debris loads were recorded in SEQ near cities and high use areas. These results indicate the presence of marine debris on remote and urban reefs, and the applicability of using citizen science to monitor debris abundance.

2018
Majithiya, Divya | Yadav, Ajay | Ram, Anirudh
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the behaviour of trace metals in anoxic environment. Water column of the harbour was found to be anoxic (DO <0.2mgl−1) with high concentration of NH4+-N (av. 459±21μmoll−1) and H2S (av.73±2.5μmoll−1) irrespective of season and tide. High concentrations of Fe, Mn in bottom water indicated that Fe, Mn were diagenetically mobilized under the anoxic conditions prevailing in the harbour. In harbour sediments significant correlation of metals with TOC and TS indicated their diagenetic immobilization in anoxic environment. Fe was positively correlated with TS suggesting FeS formation in anoxic condition. TOC/TN ratio of sediments was higher (16±5.2) than the normal marine planktonic sediments suggesting an increased burden of terrestrial carbon in the harbour. A sediment core collected 10km away from the shore indicated build-up of trace metals in recent years, showing diagenetically upward movement of metals.

2018
Queiroz, Hermano Melo | Nóbrega, Gabriel Nuto | Otero, Xose L. | Ferreira, Tiago Osório
Acid-volatile sulfides (AVS) formation and its role on trace metals bioavailability were studied in semi-arid mangroves. The semi-arid climatic conditions at the studied sites, marked by low rainfall and high evapotranspiration rates, clearly limited the AVS formation (AVS contents varied from 0.10 to 2.34μmolg−1) by favoring oxic conditions (Eh>+350mV). The AVS contents were strongly correlated with reactive iron and organic carbon (r=0.84; r=0.83 respectively), evidencing their dominant role for AVS formation under semi-arid conditions. On the other hand, the recorded ΣSEM/AVS values remained >1 evidencing a little control of AVS over the bioavailability of trace metals and, thus, its minor role as a sink for toxic metals.

2018
Lin, Jie | Zou, Xinqing | Huang, Faming
The ecological impact of thermal discharge has become an important issue in the field of marine and environmental protection. We focused on the effects of thermal discharge on seawater temperature and biological communities based on data from before (2006) and after (2013–2014) the construction of a power plant. The thermal discharge induced stratification, which resulted in changes in the vertical hydrodynamic conditions. Stratification combined with elevated temperatures significantly affected the phytoplankton abundance and community structure. Elevated seawater temperatures decreased the chlorophyll-a concentrations by 34% and 63%, at the surface and bottom, respectively. The elevated seawater temperature at the bottom might not be high enough to significantly affect the macrobenthos, but significantly affected the phytoplankton and zooplankton communities. Because these communities serve as food for the macrobenthic community, their changes resulted in growth of the macrobenthos. Furthermore, this effect induced macrobenthic community succession, resulting in decreased species diversity and increased dominance.

Investigations of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in water and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments were performed in the entrance and the exit of the Turkish Straits System (TSS) in autumn of 2016 and spring of 2017. TPH and PAH values ranged from 1.7 to 11.6 μg/l and 120 to 2912 ng/g (dw), respectively. On the basis of the given surface fluxes of the TSS, average petroleum flows were calculated as 1631 t/y from the Black Sea to the Marmara Sea and 8484 t/y from the Marmara Sea to the Aegean Sea. Pollution by PAHs ranged from relatively moderate to high. The most polluted sediments were collected from regions affected by shipping, such as Riva and Seddülbahir located at the entrance and the exit of the TSS, respectively. Moreover, origins of PAHs were determined using the ratios of PAH congeners. The main origins of PAHs were found as both pyrolytic and petrogenic at most stations.

As a consequence of industrialization, urbanization, and population growth in the past decades, high nutrient concentrations from point and non-point sources in aquatic systems have caused major problems to the water quality in rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters. Although the nutrient pollution due to land use change cannot be ignored, the combined sewer overflows and discharging sites have been important point sources of nutrient pollution. Integrated hydrodynamic, chemical, and biological models developed in recent years, which simulate the nutrient transportation from both point and non-point sources, are useful tools to assist in identifying the transport and fate of nutrients from both point and non-point sources. In this paper, water quality data from published literature were reviewed and analyzed to evaluate nutrient (N and P) pollution in aquatic systems. An integrated monitoring and management plan should be continuously developed in the future to monitor and regulate nutrient discharges from point and non-point sources.

2018
Summers, Stephen | Henry, Theodore | Gutiérrez, Tony
Microplastics (<5 mm) have often been studied under in-vitro conditions where plastics have been investigated in isolation. However, in the natural environment microplastics readily form agglomerates conferring the particles with properties different to their pristine counterparts. Here, we examined the interaction of exopolymers with polystyrene nanoplastics and microplastics. Formation of plastic agglomerates was examined using simulated sea surface conditions. Flow cytometry coupled with microscopy revealed that nano- and microplastic particle spheres form agglomerates in seawater with a mucilagenous material and an associated microbial community. To characterise this material, differential staining methods revealed it to be glycoprotein in composition. Exposing increasing concentrations of a marine bacterial glycoprotein EPS to nano- or microplastics revealed that these types of polymers contribute to the formation and abundance of plastic agglomerates. This work highlights the importance of EPS on the fate of plastic and future research should take this into account when evaluating the impact of plastics.

2018
Kim, A.W. | Vane, C.H. | Moss-Hayes, V. | Engelhart, S.E. | Kemp, A.C.
Surface sediment concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and mercury, were compared from two areas with contrasting land use history, the industrial Delaware Estuary and the rural Delmarva Peninsula (USA). TPH in the Delaware (38–616mg/kg) and saturate/aromatic fractions suggested petroleum/industrial sources compared to biogenic sources in the Delmarva coastal control (<34–159mg/kg). Within the Delaware the ∑PAH18 ranged from 3749 to 22,324μg/kg with isomeric ratios indicative of petroleum combustion source/s, conversely, those in the Delmarva (5–2139μg/kg) also yielded relatively higher perylene that were consistent with natural background levels derived from vegetation/coal combustion source/s. ∑PCB(tri-hepta) concentrations in the Delmarva (0.6–6.5μg/kg) were less than the threshold effect concentration (TEC), whereas the Delaware had received much higher PCB loading (18.1–136.8μg/kg) as evidenced by a significantly higher amounts in some samples (>TEC).
