Present status of 137Cs in seawaters of the Lombok Strait and the Flores Sea at the Indonesia Through Flow (ITF) following the Fukushima accident
2018
Suseno, Heny | Wahono, Ikhsan Budi
Due to thermocline and surface water from the western equatorial Pacific Ocean, which are transported to the Indian Ocean, Indonesian marine waters play an important role in the global ocean circulation. The objective of this study was to assess the spatial distribution of ¹³⁷Cs in the Lombok Strait as part of a national monitoring program concerning the possible impacts of radionuclides released as a result of the Fukushima accident. Sampling was conducted in the Flores sea and Lombok Strait on 15 to 24 November 2013. Measurements for the Lombok strait showed that ¹³⁷Cs concentrations at surface layer, thermocline layer and 1000m depth were 0.27Bqm⁻³; 0.42Bqm⁻³ and <MDA (0.01Bqm⁻³), respectively. The water concentration of ¹³⁴Cs at all monitoring stations were under MDA (0.01Bqm⁻³). The results the study indicate that the radiocesium input was from global fallout.

Macro- and microplastics abundances were determined in the Adriatic Sea following the MSFD TG10 protocol. The studied areas included populated gulfs, river outlets and offshore waters in five Adriatic countries. The use of small ships enabled us to detect small sized plastics (2.5–5 cm) and record average macroplastics densities of 251 ± 601 items km−2, one order of magnitude higher than previously considered. Results from manta net tows for microplastics revealed an average abundance of 315,009 ± 568,578 items km−2 (217 ± 575 g km−2). We found significantly higher microplastics abundances in nearshore (≤4 km) than in offshore waters (>4 km) and this trend seems to affect also the small sized macro plastic fragments (2.5–5 cm). The dominant polymers were polyethylene and polypropylene while the presence of some rare polymers and waxes used in food and dentistry indicated waste water treatment plants as potential sources of microplastics.

2018
Loflen, Chad L. | Buck, Travis | Bonnema, Autumn | Heim, Wesley A.
While the California spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus) is an important commercial and recreational fishery species in California, there is a lack of data on bioaccumulation for the species. This study examined pollutant tissue concentrations in lobsters from San Diego Bay, California. Observed lobster pollutant tissue concentrations in tail muscle were compared to State of California pollutant advisory levels. Concentrations were then used to conduct risk assessment using catch data from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.Study results found little bioaccumulation of organic pollutants in tail tissue, likely due to low observed lipids. Mercury was present, predominantly in methyl form, at concentrations above advisory levels. Recreational catch data for San Diego Bay showed increased non-cancer risk for fishers at the 90th percentile or greater of reported annual catch. Further studies should focus on non-tail tissues, as exploratory whole lobster samples (n = 2) showed elevated organic pollutants and metals.

Bioluminescent seas caused by blooms of the dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans are a famous scenic attraction in the Matsu archipelago near the Chinese coast in the northern part of the Taiwan Strait. The relationship between the abundance of N. scintillans and various environmental factors was examined in the subtropical coastal waters of these islands from April to December, 2016. N. scintillans disappeared after June 20th, when the sea water temperature exceeded 27°C. A strong inverse correlation between N. scintillans and diatoms in PCA analysis indicated that diatoms suffer high grazing pressure from N. scintillans. N. scintillans appeared most abundantly during the flood season, when diatoms are most abundant. Strong inverse correlations between N. scintillans and the wind speed and wind direction in PCA further point to the effect of wind on the accumulation of cells.

Plastic debris is currently recognised as one of the major global threats to marine life. However, few data exist on the presence and abundance of microplastics (plastics < 5 mm in size) in marine mammals. This is the first record of the presence of microplastics in the digestive tracts of marine mammals from the Iberian Peninsula. This study made use of 35 samples of common dolphin stomach contents. Microplastics were identified in all the samples analysed, an average of 12 items per stomach although abundance varied widely from one stomach to another. Most plastic items were small fibres although some fragments and a bead were also found. Excluding the smallest fibres as possible airborne contamination, the estimated occurrence of microplastics could drop to as low as 94%. Although factors affecting accumulation of microplastics and their effect on common dolphins are unknown, the fact that all stomachs analysed contained microplastics is a cause for concern.

Many shipwreck events occur in the neighboring areas of Taiwan due to the volume of maritime traffic and geographical conditions around Taiwan. The oil spills from such events can be devastating for the surrounding sea and coastal areas. The government realized the importance of marine pollution prevention and enforced the Marine Pollution Control Act and the Major Marine Oil Pollution Emergency Response Plan to mitigate the impact of oil spill pollution. The T.S. Taipei shipwreck highlighted the effectiveness of the national marine pollution prevention system. Inter-departmental cooperation and collaboration with private sectors are the keys for effective response. This article is the first detailed documentation of an oil spill response for a maritime incident from the beginning to the final termination of shipwreck removal. It shows the people in Taiwan intend to collaborate with other states to make a significant contribution to marine environment conservation and sustainability.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are of great concern for the environment. In this study we (a) determine levels and distribution of OCPs, PCBs, and PBDEs in sediments and two crab species (Neohelice granulata and Cyrtograpsus altimanus), (b) assess bioaccumulation in crabs, and (c) explore the occurrence of POPs in the Near Threatened Olrog's gull (Larus atlanticus) chicks and eggs in one of the most important salt marsh environments in the South West Atlantic. Sediments, crabs, and gull chicks and eggs showed POPs presence at low levels; being α-endosulfan, PCB-153, and BDE-47 the most represented compounds. In sediments, pollutant concentrations were lower than those reported in Canadian guidelines for the protection of the aquatic life. POP bioaccumulation was recorded in crabs, suggesting a risk to upper trophic level predators. Further studies are needed to understand the trophic effects of POPs in San Blas bay, particularly on the threatened Olrog's gull.

Our paper will show data on quantity, typology, distribution of beach litter (Anthropogenic Marine Debris - AMD) within a coastal macroarea surrounding the Pelagos Sanctuary, an International Protected Area in the NW Mediterranean Sea. AMD Monitoring and characterisation have been performed by using SEACleaner Protocol: an adapted version of UNEP/IOC, OSPAR and EU guidelines. 11 beaches located in 5 different areas, have been monitored with a total amount of thirty three surveys, from January 2014 to December 2015, during different seasons. Three kinds of beaches have been considered: Natural (belonging to MPAs), Urbanized and Urban. A total of 34,027 items on a total area of 32,154 m2 have been removed and classified. Spatial difference in abundance and composition of AMDs - as well as beach environmental quality - has been detected. Natural sites, and particularly protected areas close to river mouths show a major density compared to other areas.

2018
Lee, Sunggyu | Cho, Hyun-Jin | Choi, Woosik | Moon, Hyo-Bang
Contamination by organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) is an emerging concern in aquatic environments. Concentrations of 18 OPFRs were measured in water and sediments collected from the artificial Lake Shihwa. OPFR concentrations in sediments measured in this study were the highest reported worldwide, implying severe OPFR contamination. The highest concentrations of OPFRs were found in creeks taken near industrial complexes, and OPFR concentrations decreased with increasing distance from creeks to inshore or offshore lake waters. On-going OPFR contamination by wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) discharge was evidenced by the clear decrease in OPFRs in water samples collected moving away from WWTP outfall. TBEP and TEP were dominant in water samples, while TDCPP and TCPP were dominant in sediment samples. Differences in contamination profiles with sample matrices are likely due to hydrophobicity of individual OPFRs. Non-parametric multidimensional scaling ordination showed that OPFR contamination was affected by pollution inflow and proximity to industrial complexes.

Three cores collected in the area of 16th July 2010 oil spill by box crab in May 2013 and July 2014 at the Dalian Bay have been geochemically characterized to investigate the fate of chemical components in sediments. The total organic carbon, extractable organic matter contents and biomarker compositions have been applied for the differentiation of alien organic matters from in situ ones and evaluation of the biodegradation impact. Multivariate statistical analysis suggests four groups of sediments. Except a few samples at deepest part of BQ050, majority samples have certain affinity with the spilled oil. The most contaminated sediments occur at site BQ050 and the spilled oil has migrated to 8–12 cm depth. The degree of contamination can be ranked by the similarity of molecular compositions with spilled oil. Variable biomarker components in sediment extracts were also altered by ongoing biodegradation.
