Within the Global Mercury Observation System (GMOS) project, long-term continuous measurements of total gaseous mercury (TGM) were carried out by a monitoring station located at Celestun, Yucatan, Mexico, a coastal site along the Gulf of Mexico. The measurements covered the period from January 28th to October 17th, 2012. TGM data, at the Celestun site, were obtained using a high-resolution mercury vapor analyzer. TGM data show values from 0.50 to 2.82 ng/m³ with an annual average concentration of 1.047 ± 0.271 ng/m³. Multivariate analyses of TGM and meteorological variables suggest that TGM is correlated with the vertical air mass distribution in the atmosphere, which is influenced by diurnal variations in temperature and relative humidity. Diurnal variation is characterized by higher nighttime mercury concentrations, which might be influenced by convection currents between sea and land. The back trajectory analysis confirmed that local sources do not significantly influence TGM variations. This study shows that TGM monitoring at the Celestun site fulfills GMOS goals for a background site.

Since it was commercially introduced in 1974, glyphosate has been one of the most commonly used herbicides in agriculture worldwide, and there is growing concern about its adverse effects on the environment. Assuming that glyphosate may increase the organic turbidity of water bodies, we evaluated the effect of a single application of 2.4 ± 0.1 mg l⁻¹ of glyphosate (technical grade) on freshwater bacterioplankton and phytoplankton (pico, micro, and nanophytoplankton) and on the physical and chemical properties of the water. We used outdoor experimental mesocosms under clear and oligotrophic (phytoplanktonic chlorophyll a = 2.04 μg l⁻¹; turbidity = 2.0 NTU) and organic turbid and eutrophic (phytoplanktonic chlorophyll a = 50.3 μg l⁻¹; turbidity = 16.0 NTU) scenarios. Samplings were conducted at the beginning of the experiment and at 1, 8, 19, and 33 days after glyphosate addition. For both typologies, the herbicide affected the abiotic water properties (with a marked increase in total phosphorus), but it did not affect the structure of micro and nanophytoplankton. In clear waters, glyphosate treatment induced a trend toward higher bacteria and picoeukaryotes abundances, while there was a 2 to 2.5-fold increase in picocyanobacteria number. In turbid waters, without picoeukaryotes at the beginning of the experiment, glyphosate decreased bacteria abundance but increased the number of picocyanobacteria, suggesting a direct favorable effect. Moreover, our results show that the impact of the herbicide was observed in microorganisms from both oligo and eutrophic conditions, indicating that the impact would be independent of the trophic status of the water body.

Denitrification coupled to anaerobic methane oxidation is a recently discovered process performed by bacteria affiliated to the NC10 phylum. These microorganisms could play important roles in the energy-efficient way of anaerobic wastewater treatment where residual dissolved methane might be removed at the expense of nitrate or nitrite. The difficulty to enrich these microorganisms due to a slow growth rate, especially at low temperatures, limited its application in engineering field. In this study, an NC10 bacteria community was enriched from Taihu sediments by a membrane biofilm bioreactor at ambient temperature of 10–25 °C. After 13 months enrichment, the maximum denitrification rate of the enriched culture reached 0.54 mM day⁻¹ for nitrate and 1.06 mM day⁻¹ for nitrite. Anaerobic methane oxidation coupled denitrification was estimated from the ¹³C-labeled CO₂ (¹³CO₂) production during batch incubations with ¹³CH₄. Furthermore, analysis of 16S rRNA genes clone library confirmed the presence of NC10 phylum bacteria and fluorescence in situ hybridization showed that NC10 bacteria dominated the reactor. All of the results indicated the NC10 bacteria community was competitive in terms of treating nitrate-contaminated water or wastewater under natural conditions.

This study aims to evaluate a new biosorbent derived from co-composting eggshell with other organic materials (potato peels, grass clipping, and rice husk) for uptaking Pb(II) from an aqueous medium. This biosorbent contains a high amount of eggshell (30 % w/w; CES) and its performance was compared to mature compost without eggshell (CWES) and natural eggshell (ES). Sorption kinetics and equilibrium data were fitted to pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, respectively. From a kinetic point of view, lead sorption into CES was fast, attaining equilibrium within less than 180 min. Batch experiments indicated that maximum sorption capacity of Pb into CES is 23 mg g⁻¹. The sorption capacity of CES was not significantly dependent on pH within the range of 2–5.5. In comparison to ES, organic matter of CES provided supplementary sites for lead sorption and an increase of 43 % in the sorption capacity was observed. Nevertheless, CWES was the biosorbent with higher sorption capacity. Still, this study points out the potential of new use of CES as an effective biosorbent to lead removal from aqueous matrices.

2016
Fibrous mats of polymer/clay were obtained by electrospinning method, and their capacity for heavy metals removal from water was evaluated. Four different fibrous mats were prepared from a corresponding polymer/clay solutions. The precursor materials employed were poly-ε-caprolactone, polyvinyl alcohol polymers, kaolin, and metakaolin clays. Raw materials and the prepared fiber mats characterization were carried out using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, termogravimetric analysis, differential thermal analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. Elemental composition of the materials was obtained using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The environmental applications of polymer/clay materials were tested for water treatment by heavy metals (cadmium (Cd⁺²), chromium (Cr⁺³), copper (Cu⁺²), and lead (Pb⁺²)) sorption. Kinetic adsorption studies were conducted employing heavy metal solutions with initial concentration of 200 mg/L, and the amount of heavy metal adsorbed and kinetics parameters was determined using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). According to the kinetic data, the adsorption process of Cd⁺², Cr⁺³, Cu⁺², and Pb⁺² onto polymer/clay is favorable for the prepared materials and they follow a pseudo-first-order model according to the kinetic analysis. Additionally, the intraparticle diffusion was evaluated by applying the Morris and Weber model; in order to investigate the contribution of film resistance to the kinetics of the heavy metals adsorption, the adsorption kinetic data was further analyzed by Boyd’s film-diffusion model.

Although 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) is a widely used promising biomarker of DNA damage, there are concerns about which tissues or body fluids should be sampled. The objective of this study is to evaluate the correlation of DNA oxidative damage biomarkers, 8-OHdG, between blood and urine and risk factors associated with 8OHdG. The study population was recruited from a baseline survey of a worksite lifestyle study including 92 office workers aged 23 to 60 years. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect information on personal characteristics. The plasma and urinary 8-OHdG was measured by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). In linear regression, a positive relation was found (p < 0.01) between the log-transformed plasma and urinary 8-OHdG levels adjusted for gender, age, BMI, and smoking status. Our findings showed that age, gender and smoking were significantly associated with plasma 8-OHdG, but not with urinary 8-OHdG. Our results suggest that there is a positive relation between the biomarkers of plasma (steady state DNA damage) and urinary 8-OHdG (total DNA damage). However, the plasma 8-OHdG is more sensitive than urinary 8-OHdG to detect increased oxidative damages induced by risk factors.

A series of nano-BiOBr were prepared by an effective hydrothermal method in the presence of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and ethanol at different calcination temperatures. The as-prepared nano-BiOBr samples were characterized by measuring the specific area (S BET), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectrum, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results show that the calcination temperature has an important impact on the morphology and microstructure of BiOBr. The nano-BiOBr calcined at 120 °C showed excellent photocatalytic degradation properties for benzene, with photocatalytic degradation rate of 75 % for benzene under UV irradiation for 90 min, and removal efficiency of benzene was significantly enhanced by using nano-BiOBr catalyst compared to UV irradiation alone. BiOBr catalyst possessed good photocatalytic activity even after three consecutive photocatalytic reaction cycles, illustrating its excellent stability. The photocatalytic degradation of benzene followed the first-order kinetics, and the good catalytic capability of nano-BiOBr catalyst can be attributed to its crystalline, hierarchical nanostructure and nanosheet thickness.

2016
Zhang, Linlin | Jin, Xiaowei | Johnson, Andrew C. | Giesy, John P.
Airborne fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) from five megacities including Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Baoding, and Jinan were collected during November 2014 and compared with similar periods in 2012 and 2013. The November 2014 period coincided with the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders Meeting during which measures to control pollution of the air were introduced. Concentrations of 11 elements in PM₂.₅ were quantified by inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after microwave-assisted digestion. Potential effects of five toxic trace metals including Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, and the metalloid As on health were assessed. In 2014, concentrations of PM₂.₅ were significantly less than during the same period in 2012 and 2013. Mean concentrations of six elements ranked in decreasing order, Zn > Pb > Cu ≈ Mn > As > Ni, and spatial concentrations ranked in decreasing order, Shijiazhuang > Baoding > Tianjin > Jinan > Beijing. Risks of the five metals and the metalloid As to health of humans were small, except for Mn in Shijiazhuang. Risks to health posed by other elements were less during the period of study. Risks posed by the five metals and As in Beijing were greater to varying degrees after the APEC meeting. Risks to health of humans during the APEC were overall lesser than the same period in 2012 and 2013, mostly due to lesser emissions due to the short-term control measures.

2016
The objective of this study was to assess the impact of metal contamination on microbial functional diversity and enzyme activity in forest soils. This study involved the evaluation of the influence of the texture, carbon content and distance to the source of contamination on the change in soil microbial activity, which did not investigate in previous studies. The study area is located in southern Poland near the city of Olkusz around the flotation sedimentation pond of lead and zinc at the Mining and Metallurgical Company “ZGH Bolesław, Inc.”. The central point of the study area was selected as the middle part of the sedimentation pond. The experiment was conducted over a regular 500 × 500-m grid, where 33 sampling points were established. Contents of organic carbon and trace elements (Zn, Pb and Cd), pH and soil texture were investigated. The study included the determination of dehydrogenase and urease activities and microbial functional diversity evaluation based on the community-level physiological profiling approach by Biolog EcoPlate. The greatest reduction in the dehydrogenase and urease activities was observed in light sandy soils with Zn content >220 mg · kg⁻¹ and a Pb content > 100 mg · kg⁻¹. Soils with a higher concentration of fine fraction, despite having the greatest concentrations of metals, were characterized by high rates of Biolog®-derived parameters and a lower reduction of enzyme activity.

Psychiatric pharmaceuticals, such as anxiolytics, sedatives, hypnotics and antidepressors, are among the most prescribed active substances in the world. The occurrence of these compounds in the environment, as well as the adverse effects they can have on non-target organisms, justifies the growing concern about these emerging environmental pollutants. This study aims to analyse the effects of six psychotropic drugs, valproate, cyamemazine, citalopram, sertraline, fluoxetine and oxazepam, on the survival and locomotion of Japanese medaka Oryzias latipes larvae. Newly hatched Japanese medaka were exposed to individual compounds for 72 h, at concentrations ranging from 10 μg L⁻¹ to 10 mg L⁻¹. Lethal concentrations 50 % (LC₅₀) were estimated at 840, 841 and 9,136 μg L⁻¹ for fluoxetine, sertraline and citalopram, respectively, while other compounds did not induce any significant increase in mortality. Analysis of the swimming behaviour of larvae, including total distance moved, mobility and location, provided an estimated lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC) of 10 μg L⁻¹ for citalopram and oxazepam, 12.2 μg L⁻¹ for cyamemazine, 100 μg L⁻¹ for fluoxetine, 1,000 μg L⁻¹ for sertraline and >10,000 μg L⁻¹ for valproate. Realistic environmental mixture of the six psychotropic compounds induced disruption of larval locomotor behaviour at concentrations about 10- to 100-fold greater than environmental concentrations.
