Brazil is one of the major global poultry producers, and the organic waste generated by the chicken slaughterhouses can potentially be used as a biofertilizer in agriculture. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that continuous use of biofertilizer to the crops, substituting the use of mineral fertilizer promote C-offset for the soil and generate crop energy efficiency for the production system. Thus, the objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of biofertilizer use alone or in combination with mineral fertilizer on soil organic carbon (SOC) stock, carbon dioxide (CO₂) mitigation, C-offset, crop energy efficiency and productivity, and alleviation of environmental pollution. The experiment was established in southern Brazil on a soil under 15 years of continuous no-till (NT). Experimental treatments were as follows: i) Control with no fertilizer application, ii) 100% use of industrial mineral fertilizer (Min-F); iii) 100% use of organic waste originated from poultry slaughterhouses and hereinafter designated biofertilizer (Bio-F), and iv) Mixed fertilizer equivalent to the use of 50% mineral fertilizer + 50% of biofertilizer (Mix-F). Effects of experimental treatments were assessed for the crop sequence based on bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), soybean (Glycine max) and corn (Zea mays) in the summer and wheat (Triticum aestivum) and black oat (Avena strigosaSchreb) in the winter composing two crops per year, as follow: bean/wheat-soybean/black oat-corn/wheat-soybean/black oat-corn/wheat-bean. The continuous use of Bio-F treatment significantly increased the index of crop energy efficiency. It was higher than that of control, and increased it by 25.4 Mg CO₂eq ha⁻¹ over that of Min-F treatment because of higher inputs of crop biomass-C into the system. Further, continuous use of Bio-F resulted in a significantly higher CO₂eq stock and offset than those for Min-F treatment. A positive relationship between the C-offset and the crop energy efficiency (R² = 0.71, p < 0.001) indicated that the increase of C-offset was associated with the increase of energy balance and the amount of SOC sequestered. The higher energy efficiency and C-offset by application of Bio-F indicated that the practice of crop bio fertilization with poultry slaughterhouse waste is a viable alternative for recycling and minimizing the environmental impacts.

Low doses of neuroactive chemicals end up in the environment and disrupt behaviour of non-target organisms. Although a whole range of studies have documented pollutant-induced changes in behaviour, natural daily variability in behaviour is rarely taken into account. This is surprising because biological rhythms may affect the outcome of experiments, are adaptive and are expected to be sensitive to neurochemical exposure. Here, we exploit daily behavioural variation in the fish model Nothobranchius furzeri to examine if behavioural effects of chronic exposure (74 days) to an environmentally relevant level (28 ng/L) of the neurochemical fluoxetine depend on the time of day. Fluoxetine exposure induced an increase in anxiety-related behaviour that was slightly more pronounced in the evening compared to the morning. Moreover, open-field locomotor activity was disrupted and daily patterns in activity lifted upon exposure to the compound. These results imply that short-term behavioural variability should be considered both to standardise ecological risk assessment of neuroactive chemicals as well as to better understand the environmental impact of such compounds in aquatic ecosystems.

Litterfall mercury (Hg) deposition is the dominant source of soil Hg in forests. Identifying reduction processes and tracking the fate of legacy Hg on forest floor are challenging tasks. Interplays between isotopes of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) may shed some lights on Hg biogeochemical processes because their biogeochemical cycling closely links with organic matters. Isotope measurements at the evergreen broadleaf forest floor at Mt. Ailao (Mountain Ailao) display that δ²⁰²Hg and Δ¹⁹⁹Hg both significantly correlate with δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N in soil profiles. Data analysis results show that microbial reduction is the dominant process for the distinct δ²⁰²Hg shift (up to ∼1.0‰) between Oi and 0–10 cm surface mineral soil, and dark abiotic organic matter reduction is the main cause for the Δ¹⁹⁹Hg shift (∼-0.18‰). Higher N in foliage leads to greater Hg concentration, and Hg⁰ re-emission via microbial reduction on forest floor is likely linked to N release and immobilization on forest floor. We thus suggest that the enhanced N deposition in global forest ecosystems can potentially influence Hg uptake by vegetation and litter Hg sequestration on forest floor.

Metal-responsive transcription factor 1 (MTF1) participates in redox homeostasis and heavy metals detoxification via regulating the expression of metal responsive genes. However, the exact role of MTF1 in Cd-induced cerebral toxicity remains unclear. Herein, we explored the mechanism of Cd-elicited cerebral toxicity through modulating MTF1/MTs pathway in chicken cerebrum exposed to different concentrations of Cd (35 mg, 70 mg, and 140 mg/kg CdCl₂) via diet. Notably, cerebral tissues showed varying degrees of microstructural changes under Cd exposure. Cd exposure significantly up-regulated the expression of metal transporters (DMT1, ZIP8, and ZIP10) with concomitant elevated Cd level, as determined by ICP-MS. Cd significantly altered other cerebral biometals concentrations (particularly, Zn, Fe, Se, Cr, Mo, and Pb) and redox balance, resulting in increased cerebral oxidative stress. More importantly, Cd exposure suppressed MTF1 mRNA and nuclear protein levels and its target metal-responsive genes, notably metallothioneins (MT1 and MT2), and Fe and Cu transporter genes (FPN1, ATOX1, and XIAP). Moreover, Cd disrupted the regulation of expression of selenoproteome (particularly, GPxs and SelW), and cerebral Se level. Overall, our data revealed that molecular mechanisms associated with Cd-induced cerebral damage might include over-expression of DMT1, ZIP8 and ZIP10, and suppression of MTF1 and its main target metal-responsive genes as well as several selenoproteins.

Both submerged macrophytes (SMs) and artificial macrophytes (AMs) have been widely used to improve water quality in eutrophic water. However, in heavily eutrophic aquatic ecosystems, the purification function of SMs is often restricted by the poor growth state due to competition from algae, while the purification function of AMs is often restricted by the limited carbon source supply for biofilm microbes attached to the AM surface. The objective of this study was to develop a new strategy to increase pollutant removal efficiency (RE) by combining the use of SMs and AMs. Pilot-scale microcosms, including treatments with both SMs and AMs (S&A), only SMs (SO) and only AMs (AO), were established to identify the performance of the new strategy. The results suggest that treatment S&A obtained REs of 88.9% for total nitrogen (TN) and 48.1% for chemical oxygen demand (COD); as comparison, treatments SO and AO obtained REs of 77.4% and 81.2% for TN and REs of −13.7% and 39.0% for COD, respectively. Compared with SO, the S&A treatment benefited SM growth in biomass, leaf chlorophyll concentration and root activity by inhibiting algae growth. In addition, compared with treatment AO, S&A increased the biofilm microbial biomass and the relative abundance of nitrifiers of families Nitrosomonadaceae and Nitrospira attached to AM surfaces. Therefore, by the mutual promotion of SMs and biofilms on AMs, the synergic application of SMs and AMs is a useful strategy for improving TN and COD REs in eutrophic water bodies such as rivers and constructed wetlands.A strategy was developed to increase nitrogen and COD removal in eutrophic water by the mutual promotion of submerged macrophytes and biofilms on artificial macrophytes.

The environmental-friendly photocatalytic process with a magnetic catalyst CoFe₂O₄/TiO₂ mediated by solar light for ibuprofen (IBP) degradation in pure water, wastewater effluent and artificial seawater was investigated systematically. The study aims to reveal the efficiency, the mechanism and toxicity evolution during IBP degradation. Hydroxyl radicals and photo-hole (h⁺) were found to contribute to the IBP decay. The presence of SO₄²⁻ showed no significant effect, while NO₃⁻ accelerated the photodegradation, and other anions including HCO₃⁻, Cl⁻, F⁻, and Br⁻ showed significant inhibition. The removal efficiency was significantly elevated with the addition of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) or persulfate (PS) ([Oxidant]₀:[IBP]₀ = 0.4–4), with reaction rate of 5.3–13.1 and 1.3–2.9 times as high as the control group, respectively. However, the reaction was slowed down with the introduction of H₂O₂. A mathematic model was employed to describe the effect of ferrate, high concentration or stepwise addition of ferrate was suggested to play a positive role in IBP photodegradation. Thirteen transformation products were identified and five of them were newly reported. The degradation pathways including hydroxylation, the benzene ring opening and the oxidation of carbon were proposed. IBP can be efficiently removed when spiked in wastewater and seawater despite the decreased degradation rate by 41% and 56%, respectively. Compared to the IBP removal, mineralization was relatively lower. The adverse effect of the parent compound IBP to the green algae Chlorella vulgaris was gradually eliminated with the decomposition of IBP. The transformation product C178a which possibly posed toxicity to rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus can also be efficiently removed, indicating that the photocatalysis process is effective in IBP removal, mineralization and toxicity elimination.

Wetland snakes, as top predators, are becoming globally recognised as bioindicators of wetland contamination. Livers are the traditional test organ for contaminant exposure in organisms, but research is moving towards a preference for non-lethal tissue sampling. Snake scales can be used as an indicator of exposure, as many metals bind to the keratin. We used laser ablation with inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to quantify the concentrations of 19 metals and metalloids (collectively referred to ‘metals’ hereafter) in Western tiger snake (Notechis scutatus occidentalis) scales from four wetlands along an urban gradient, and compared them to concentrations measured in captive tiger snake scales. We conducted repeat measures to determine the concentration accuracy of each metal using LA-ICP-MS. Concentrations in wild Western tiger snake scales were significantly higher than in reference tiger snake scales for most metals analysed, suggesting accumulation from environmental exposure. We compared the scale concentrations to sediment concentrations of sampled wetlands, and found inter-site differences between mean concentrations of metals in scales parallel patterns recorded from sediment. Four metals (Mn, As, Se, Sb) had strong positive correlations with liver tissue contents suggesting scale concentrations can be used to infer internal concentrations. By screening for a larger suite of metals than we could using traditional digestive methods, we identified additional metals (Ti, V, Sr, Cs, Tl, Th, U) that may be accumulating to levels of concern in tiger snakes in Perth, Western Australia. This research has progressed the use of LA-ICP-MS for quantifying a suite of metals available in snake scales, and highlights the significance of using wetland snake scales as a non-lethal indicator of environmental contamination.

We used real-world exposure scenarios to evaluate the effect of six ambient air pollutant (PM₂.₅, PM₁₀, NO₂, SO₂, CO, and O₃) exposure on renal function among older adults without chronic kidney disease (CKD). We recruited 169 older adults without CKD in Beijing, China, for a longitudinal study from 2016 to 2018. The Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) and the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (EPI) equations were employed to derive the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). A linear mixed-effects model with random intercepts for participants was employed to determine the effects of air pollutants on renal function evaluated on the basis of eGFR and urinary albumin/creatinine ratio at different exposure windows (1-, 2-, 3-, 5-, 7-, 14-, 28-, 45-, and 60-days moving averages). An interquartile range (IQR) increase in NO₂ for was associated with significant decreases of in eGFR (MDRD equation) [percentage changes: −4.49 (95% confidence interval: −8.44, −0.37), −5.51 (−10.43, −0.33), −2.26 (−4.38, −0.08), −3.71 (−6.67, −0.65), −5.44 (−9.58, −1.11), −5.50 (−10.24, −0.51), −6.15 (−10.73, −1.33), and −6.34 (−11.17, −1.25) for 1-, 2-, 5-, 7-, 14-, 28-, 45-, and 60-days moving averages, respectively] and in eGFR (EPI equation) [percentage changes: −5.04 (−7.09, −2.94), −6.25 (−8.81, −3.62), −5.16 (−7.34, −2.92), −5.10 (−7.85, −2.28), −5.83 (−8.23, −3.36), −6.04 (−8.55, −3.47) for 1-, 2-, 14-, 28-, 45-, and 60-days moving averages, respectively]. In two-pollutant model, only the association of NO₂ exposure with eGFR remained robust after adjustment for any other pollutant. This association was stronger for individuals with hypertension for the EPI equation or BMI <25 kg/m² for the MDRD equation at lags 1 and 1–2. Our findings suggest that NO₂ exposure is associated with eGFR reduction among older adults without CKD for short (1-, 2-days) and medium (14-, 28-, 45-, 60-days) term exposure periods; thus, NO₂ exposure may contribute to renal impairment.

With the implementation of clean air strategies, PM₂.₅ pollution abatement has been observed in the “2 + 26” cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region (referred to as the BTH2+26) and their surrounding areas. To identify the drivers for PM₂.₅ concentration decreases in the BTH2+26 cites from the 2016/17 heating season (HS1617) to the 2017/18 heating season (HS1718), we investigated the contributions of meteorological conditions and emission-reduction measures by Community Multi-Scale Air Quality (CMAQ) model simulations. The source apportionments of five sector sources (i.e., agriculture, industry, power plants, traffic and residential), and regional sources (i.e., local, within-BTH: other cities within the BTH2+26 cities, outside-BTH, and boundary conditions (BCON)) to the PM₂.₅ decreases in the BTH2+26 cities were estimated with the Integrated Source Apportionment Method (ISAM). Mean PM₂.₅ concentrations in the BTH2+26 cities substantially decreased from 77.4 to 152.5 μg m⁻³ in HS1617 to 52.9–101.9 μg m⁻³ in HS1718, with the numbers of heavy haze (daily PM₂.₅ ≥150 μg m⁻³) days decreasing from 17-77 to 5–30 days. The model simulation results indicated that the PM₂.₅ concentration decreases in most of the BTH2+26 cities were attributed to emission reductions (0.4–55.0 μg m⁻³, 2.3–81.6% of total), but the favorable meteorological conditions also played important roles (1.9–25.4 μg m⁻³, 18.4–97.7%). Residential sources dominated the PM₂.₅ reductions, leading to decreases in average PM₂.₅ concentrations by more than 30 μg m⁻³ in severely polluted cities (i.e., Shijiazhuang, Baoding, Xingtai, and Beijing). Regional source analyses showed that both local and within-BTH sources were significant contributors to PM₂.₅ concentrations for most cities. Emission controls in local and within-BTH sources in HS1718 decreased the average PM₂.₅ concentrations by 0.1–47.2 μg m⁻³ and 0.3–22.1 μg m⁻³, respectively, relative to those in HS1617. Here we demonstrate that a combination of favorable meteorological conditions and anthropogenic emission reductions contributed to the improvement of air quality from HS1617 to HS1718 in the BTH2+26 cities.

Antibiotic pollution has become a global problem threatening human health. Ofloxacin is one of the more widely used antibiotics, but reports on the reaction of plant to ofloxacin pollution are limited. In this study, using adversity-resistant (R), adversity-sensitive (S) and grafted plant S/R as models, we investigated the biological response of tomato to exogenous ofloxacin residues. The results showed that lower levels of ofloxacin treatment (5 mg L⁻¹ and 10 mg L⁻¹) promoted tomato growth, and 10 mg L⁻¹ ofloxacin was the critical dose to stimulate growth among the different treatments. In addition, the photosynthetic and fluorescence parameters, antioxidant enzyme activities and transcription-level expression of the enzymes were stimulated by low ofloxacin treatment. However, high ofloxacin treatment (20 mg L⁻¹ and 40 mg L⁻¹) exhibited a significantly negative effect on plant growth, photosynthesis, fluorescence parameters, antioxidant enzyme activities and transcript levels expression. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels increased with increasing ofloxacin concentrations, indicating that the oxidative damage of plants was severe with increasing doses. In contrast, the role of antioxidant enzymes in the antibiotic response was limited at high ofloxacin concentrations. The grafting experiment demonstrated that grafted plants had the ability to alleviate ofloxacin stress. In conclusion, ofloxacin can damage the photosynthetic machinery by promoting ROS accumulation, which results in the etiolation of tomato leaves and inhibits plant growth, but grafting can reduce its.
