The present study was conducted to establish the intensity of microplastic pollution in demersal fish species, Johnius dussumieri, from the north eastern coastal waters of the Arabian sea. MP recovered were analysed for size, morphology, colour, and polymer type. The study results indicated that the GI tract and gills of individual fishes had 6.6 ± 1.7 and 6.2 ± 1.7 items, respectively. The microplastics having a size of <100 μm consisting of beads were found to be most predominant. Black and blue were the most present colours of microplastic in the tissues. Among the different studied months, a higher number of MP incidence was observed in the post monsoon period. There is no significant correlation observed between the microplastic numbers in gills and guts tissue. The present study shows that there is a potential risk of microplastic bioaccumulation in the fish body and subsequent risk to the consumers and organisms sharing the food chain.

In recent years, research on pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the marine environment has attracted increasing attention worldwide. However, more work is needed to improve PPCPs detection methods, specifically for seawater environments. An analytical method based on stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) had been developed and fully optimized for the pretreatment and detection of ten widely used PPCPs that are commonly found in seawater samples. By optimizing several variables including the material of the stir bars, extraction temperature, extraction time, ionic strength, desorption solvent, and desorption time, the optimized method has achieved excellent results in the detection and quantification of target PPCPs with detection limits ranging from 0.03 to 1 ng/L. The distribution of target PPCPs at the mouth of Jiaozhou Bay was successfully determined by this method, and the concentrations and detection frequencies of PPCPs varied greatly from N.D. to 449.36 ng/L and from 9.1 % to 100 %, respectively. Moreover, the distributions of PPCPs were explained by the Lagrangian particle-tracking model, and the results showed that the Tuandao sewage treatment plant had the most significant impact on the study area. The environmental risk assessment results showed that several target PPCPs might pose risks to aquatic organisms. In particular, triclocarban should receive more attention and the risk quotients of the mixtures (MRQ) should not be ignored.

Cytochrome P450 1a (Cyp1a) is an important enzyme for metabolism of organic pollutants. To understand its reaction to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), we knocked out this gene in a marine model fish, Javanese medaka, Oryzias javanicus, using the CRISPR/Cas 9 system. A homozygous mutant (KO) strain with a four-base deletion was established using an environmental DNA (eDNA)-based genotyping technique. Subsequently, KO, heterozygous mutant (HT), and wild-type (WT) fish were exposed to model pollutants, pyrene and phenanthrene, and survivorship and swimming behavior were analyzed. Compared to WT, KO fish were more sensitive to pyrene, suggesting that Cyp1a transforms pyrene into less toxic metabolites. Conversely, WT fish were sensitive to phenanthrene, suggesting that metabolites transformed by Cyp1a are more toxic than the original compound. HT fish showed intermediate results. Thus, comparative use of KO and WT fish can distinguish modes of pollutant toxicity, providing a deeper understanding of fish catabolism of environmental pollutants.

The control of macroalgal bloom development is central for protecting estuarine ecosystems. The identification of the nutrients limiting the development of macroalgal blooms, and their most likely sources is crucial for management strategies. Three Irish estuaries (Argideen, Clonakilty and Tolka) affected by green tides were monitored from June 2016 to August 2017. During each sampling occasion, biomass abundances, tissue N and P contents, and δ¹⁵N were determined for tubular and laminar morphologies of Ulva. All estuaries showed maximum biomass during summer and minimum during winter. Tissue nutrient contents revealed P rather than N limitation. The δ¹⁵N during the peak bloom indicated agriculture as the most likely source of nitrogen in the Argideen and Clonakilty, and urban wastewaters in the Tolka. No differences in the δ¹⁵N, and the tissue nutrients content were observed between morphologies. The period between May and July is most suitable for bioassessment of green tides.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are toxic to marine organisms including the major primary producer phytoplankton, while the toxic mechanisms haven't yet been fully clarified. Therefore, we comprehensively studied the toxic mechanisms of BDE-47 on the marine chlorophyte Chlorella sp., with a focus on the role of cellular oxidative stress. The results indicate that BDE-47 stress resulted in the inhibition of population growth as well as cell death and programmed cell death. The antioxidant system was activated in both low and high BDE-47 treatments, but only microalgal cells in the high BDE-47 treatment showed cellular oxidative stress. By adding ROS inhibitor, the relief of photosynthetic inhibition, Ca²⁺ overproduction and cell death was found. Therefore, we conclude that photosynthetic damage, cell death and cellular oxidative stress were the major mechanisms of BDE-47 toxicity to Chlorella sp., and that cellular oxidative stress played an important role in mediating the other mechanisms.

Citizen science (CS) can help to tackle the emerging and worldwide problem of marine litter (ML), from collecting data to engaging different stakeholders. We reviewed what and how the scientific literature is reporting CS on ML to identify possible gaps to be improved. The 92 search results (separate occasions when 48 different CS initiatives were discussed across 85 publication records) revealed an under-representation of studies in developing regions. Most search results focused on the science of ML, whilst information regarding citizen scientists was commonly vague or missing, preventing critical analysis of good practices on this aspect. The studies concentrated on the shoreline and did not harmonize types and sizes of items collected, thus precluding data meta-analyses. The standardisation of CS methods and approaches and the detailed report of aspects related to citizen scientists are essential to support the science we need for the advances in CS efforts to face ML.

Commercial aquaculture has a profound impact on coastal marine environments. Here, we investigate the spatial impact of intensive commercial finfish aquaculture on local meso-zooplankton communities and the bioaccumulation of aquaculturally-derived metals (and other elements) within zooplankton samples in the Vourlias Bay, Greece. The results indicate alterations to zooplankton community composition correlate with increased eutrophic compound concentrations in the water column in closer proximity to aquaculture stations (100–300 m from fish cages). During the summer sampling, higher concentrations of accumulated metals within zooplankton samples were found at reference stations furthest from fish cages (>1000 m). During the winter sampling, however, spatial differences in accumulated metal concentrations were limited. We suggest metals are rapidly accumulated at lower trophic levels near aquaculture stations and are then dispersed to greater distances while ascending the trophic chain. This research provides good evidence for future investigations into zooplankton as an environmental impact bioindicator for aquaculture.

It is essential to evaluate secondary migration caused by riverine input and resuspension from seabed sediments to estimate the future distribution of radioactive cesium (¹³⁷Cs) in the coastal area off Fukushima Prefecture. In particular, the inflow from rivers cannot be ignored because most of the ¹³⁷Cs inflow from rivers is deposited on the coast without elute into seawater. Two mooring systems were installed near the Ukedo River's mouth (Fukushima Prefecture) from February 2017 to February 2018. The first contained a sediment trap system, collecting sinking particles during the period. The second comprised a turbidity sensor and a current sensor. The contribution of resuspension and inflow from the river to the mass flux was quantitatively evaluated using multiple regression equations. The results showed that resuspension caused 79%–83% of secondary ¹³⁷Cs migration in nearshore areas, whereas the influence of riverine ¹³⁷Cs input on the sediment was only 7% per year.

A quinquennial seasonal study (2015–2019) has been conducted to evaluate the bioaccumulation pattern of trace metals in Meretrix meretrix. The concentration of trace metals in the clam was observed as Cr > Cu > Ni > Zn > Pb > Cd > Hg, (Body> Mantle > Gills), similar to sediments. Contamination Factor of Cu and Cr in sediments showed strong association with the corresponding metal concentration in the body (r = 0.687, r = 0.962), mantle (r = 0.880, r = 0.956) and gills (r = 0.937, r = 0.863). Bioconcentration Factor was high for Cr followed by Ni. Mean Metal Concentration Rate (MMCR) of Cr was high and Hg was low (Body>Mantle>Gills). Our study establishes that the trace metal intake by Meretrix meretrix is associated with seasonal variation, physicochemical factors, sediment texture, chemical speciation and the metabolic stress created within the species induced from increased demand for protein synthesis. The latter resulted in the augmented rate of accumulation of Cu and Cr.

2022
Rodrigues, R.V. | Patil, J.S. | Anil, A.C.
An overview of dinoflagellates cysts assemblage is presented as a trophic index for three monsoon-influenced estuarine and marine ports along the Indian coast. The cyst distribution (including harmful species) showed a trend of highest abundance and species number in highly eutrophicated estuarine (Cochin-south) followed by medium (New-Mangalore-central) and low (Kandla-north) levels of eutrophicated marine ports. The investigation revealed four new species in the region (Bitectatodinium spongium, Gonyaulax elongatum, Brigantedinium sp. and potential harmful species Blixaea quinquecornis-cyst similar to planktonic). Autotrophs dominance in the highly productive Cochin and New-Mangalore ports reveals that, in eutrophic systems, heterotrophs need not always be dominant. The indicator taxa (Polykrikos, Protoperidnium, and Lingulodinium) presence in high density indicated a eutrophic system. This study concludes cyst (species numbers/Fisher-α index/indicator species) as potential eutrophication proxies and emphasizes greater harmful-algal-bloom risks in the high trophic-index ports (Cochin and New-Mangalore).
