Oil biodegradation as a weathering process has been extensively investigated over the years, especially after the Deepwater Horizon blowout. In this study, we performed microcosm experiments at 5 °C with chemically dispersed oil in non-amended seawater. We link biodegradation processes with microbial community and metagenome dynamics and explain the succession based on substrate specialization. Reconstructed genomes and 16S rRNA gene analysis revealed that Bermanella and Zhongshania were the main contributors to initial n-alkane breakdown, while subsequent abundances of Colwellia and microorganisms closely related to Porticoccaceae were involved in secondary n‑alkane breakdown and beta‑oxidation. Cycloclasticus, Porticoccaceae and Spongiiabcteraceae were associated with degradation of mono- and poly-cyclic aromatics. Successional pattern of genes coding for hydrocarbon degrading enzymes at metagenome level, and reconstructed genomic content, revealed a high differentiation of bacteria involved in hydrocarbon biodegradation. A cooperation among oil degrading microorganisms is thus needed for the complete substrate transformation.

PAHs are persistent pollutants released into the environment by fossil fuels burning and leak during petroleum operations. Associated with suspended particles upon entering marine ecosystem are accumulated by benthic fauna. Human exposure occurs mainly from ingestion such as gastropods consumption. The objective was to determine PAHs in sediments and in the marine gastropod Buccinanops globulosus in sites with different maritime and urban influences. In sampling sites located 20 km from the harbor, PAHs were non-detected; while in harbor gastropods, the level of PAH4 was exceeded according to international normative. Level of dibenzo[a,h]anthracene in sediments was between the ISQG and PEL. Since these are the first results of PAHs in edible gastropods in South America, we concluded that PAHs can be dangerous for consumers according to ingestion frequency. Integrative studies are necessary to evaluate the interaction among pollutants in maritime areas and the incidence in human health due to shellfish consumption.

Long-term species responses to ocean acidification depend on their sensitivity during different life stages. We tested for sensitivity of juvenile fish behaviour to ocean acidification by exposing eggs to control and elevated CO₂ levels, and translocating offspring between treatments in a reciprocal design. After 12 weeks of exposure, activity, inactivity and anxiety levels of juveniles from control eggs were similar, whether juveniles had experienced elevated CO₂ conditions or not, and this pattern was consistent over time. However, juveniles raised as eggs under elevated CO₂ showed increased anxiety levels compared to those from control eggs. This response was not reversed when CO₂-exposed juveniles were translocated to control conditions. Our findings highlight the value of evaluating fish sensitivities to global change pollutants across different life stages, and indicate that sensitivity during the often-overlooked egg stage can be critical with long-lasting impairment of behaviours that are coupled to individual fitness and population persistence.

The work presented here aims at comparing monitoring of S-metolachlor, the major pesticide in use in the Arcachon Bay (South West of France, transitional coastal area), by chemical analysis (monthly passive sampling) and contaminant dissipation modeling from sources (Mars-2D model). The global strategy consisted in i) identifying the major sources of S-metolachlor to the Bay, ii) monitoring these sources for 12 months, and iii) comparing modeled data in the Bay based on measured inputs, to chemical measurements made inside the Bay along with the 12-month source monitoring. Results first showed that the major S-metolachlor surface inputs to the Arcachon Bay are mainly from one single source. Modeled and measured data were in good agreement at 5 sites in the Bay, both in terms of concentration range and seasonal trends. Modeling thus offers a cost-effective solution for monitoring contaminants in transitional waters, overcoming in addition the technical limitations for measuring pg L⁻¹ or lower levels in coastal waters. However, we highlighted that secondary sources may affect accuracy at local level.

Combined effects of fishing and oil spills on marine fish: Role of stock demographic structure for offspring overlap with oil Полный текст

It has been proposed that the multiple pressures of fishing and petroleum activities impact fish stocks in synergy, as fishing-induced demographic changes in a stock may lead to increased sensitivity to detrimental effects of acute oil spills. High fishing pressure may erode the demographic structure of fish stocks, lead to less diverse spawning strategies, and more concentrated distributions of offspring in space and time. Hence an oil spill may potentially hit a larger fraction of a year-class of offspring. Such a link between demographic structure and egg distribution was recently demonstrated for the Northeast Arctic stock of Atlantic cod for years 1959–1993. We here estimate that this variation translates into a two-fold variation in the maximal proportion of cod eggs potentially exposed to a large oil spill. With this information it is possible to quantitatively account for demographic structure in prospective studies of population effects of possible oil spills.

Inorganic arsenic (As) is one of the most toxic pollutants in the water. We have studied their effects on the marine teleost European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) at 2 and 10 days of 5 μM of As2O3 (sub-lethal doses) waterborne exposure. Arsenic accumulates in liver and gill tissues. The expression profile of five genes (bax, blc2, casp3, casp8 and casp9) involved in apoptosis cell death confirmed apoptotic effects in liver, slight changes in gill and no effects in skin according with the histopathology findings. Total IgM level and peroxidase activities were increased at 2 and 10 days, respectively. The bactericidal activity was decreased at 2 days after As exposure. A general decrease of cellular immune activities with significant differences in the case of respiratory burst activity was observed after 2 and 10 days of exposure. This work describes for the first time the effects of As exposure on European sea bass.

Whole genome sequences to assess the link between antibiotic and metal resistance in three coastal marine bacteria isolated from the mummichog gastrointestinal tract Полный текст

Antibiotic resistance is a global public health issue and metal exposure can co-select for antibiotic resistance. We examined genome sequences of three multi-drug and metal resistant bacteria: one Shewanella sp., and two Vibrio spp., isolated from the gut of the mummichog fish (Fundulus heteroclitus). Our primary goal was to understand the mechanisms of co-selection. Phenotypically, the strains showed elevated resistance to arsenate, mercury, and various types of β-lactams. The genomes contained genes of public health concern including one carbapenemase (blaOXA-48). Our analyses indicate that the co-selection phenotype is mediated by chromosomal resistance genes and cross-resistance. No evidence of co-resistance was found; most resistance genes were chromosomally located. Moreover, the identification of many efflux pump gene homologs indicates that cross-resistance and/or co-regulation may further contribute to resistance. We suggest that the mummichog gut microbiota may be a source of clinically relevant antibiotic resistance genes.

Spreading of waxy oils on calm water Полный текст

Brönner, Ute | Johansen, Øistein | Leirvik, Frode | Nordam, Tor | Sørheim, Kristin R.
The objective of this paper is to provide a simple extension of the much-used gravity spreading model for oil on calm water to account for the spreading behavior of waxy crude oils in cold waters – including the observed retardation and eventual termination of spreading at certain oil film thicknesses. This peculiar behavior is not predicted by traditional spreading models for oil on calm water (i.e. viscous-gravity spreading models), but may occur due to non-Newtonian oil properties caused by precipitation of wax at low temperatures. To clarify the spreading behavior of such oils, SINTEF has conducted a series of laboratory experiments with a range of waxy oil mixtures. The present paper contains analyses of data from these experiments, including favorable comparisons with calculations by a proposed improved surface spreading model.

A combined approach merging stable isotopes and fatty acids was applied to study anthropogenic pollution in the Río Negro estuary. Fatty acid markers of vegetal detritus indicated considerable allochthonous inputs at freshwater sites. Correlative evidence of diatom fatty acids, δ13C, chlorophyll and particulate organic matter suggested the importance of diatoms for the autochthonous organic matter production at the river mouth. Low δ15N values (~0‰) and high fatty acid 18:1(n-7) concentrations in the suspended particulate matter, in combination with the peaks of coliforms and ammonium, indicated a strong impact of untreated sewage discharge. The 15N depletion was related to oxygen-limited ammonification processes and incorporation of 15N depleted ammonium to microorganisms. This work demonstrates that the combined use of lipid and isotopic markers can greatly increase our understanding of biogeochemical factors and pollutants influencing estuaries, and our findings highlight the urgent need for water management actions to reduce eutrophication.

Semi-enclosed basins are environmentally dynamic and some of the most anthropogenically affected components of the coastal realm. They can reflect various environmental impacts, thus qualifying as natural laboratories to study these impacts. The Gulf of Khambhat (GoK) is such a system where analysis of in situ parameters indicated polluted conditions. The sources of various contaminants were deciphered. Though there are considerable inputs of pollutants, the assimilative capacity of the GoK holds good with high Dissolved Oxygen (DO) (6–9.3 mg/L) content as revealed in situ and in silico. High Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and marginal ammonia contamination prevail in the region. Simulations revealed that the rivers bring in a considerable amount of nitrate, organic material and phosphate into the Gulf. Considering the prevailing environmental condition, the current study posits to have regular water quality monitoring; and the carrying capacity of the Gulf should be assessed before the authorization of anthropogenic activities.
