Verâne, Jéssica | dos Santos, Naiara C.P. | da Silva, Verônica L. | de Almeida, Marcos | de Oliveira, Olívia M.C. | Moreira, Ícaro T.A.
A phytoremediation experiment was carried out in mesocosms to investigate the performance of Rhizophora mangle in the remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in mangrove sediment contaminated with crude oil. The water pH of the experiments (phytoremediation and natural attenuation) ranged from 4.9 to 8.4 at 0 and 90 days, respectively. The oxy-reduction potential (Eh) ranged from oxidising (108.0 mV, time 0) to reducing (approximately −110.0 mV, time 90) environments. Dissolved oxygen (DO) ranged from 5.7 mg L⁻¹ (time 0) to 4.5 mg L⁻¹ and 3.6 mg L⁻¹ (time 90) in phytoremediation and natural attenuation, respectively. The sediments had silty texture and an average concentration of 5% organic matter (OM). Phytoremediation (60.76%) showed better efficiency in the remediation of the 16 PAHs compared to natural attenuation (49.57%). Principal component analyses showed a correlation between the concentrations of PAHs with pH, Eh, OM and DO in both experiments.

Human waste is a global concern, and volumes are growing rapidly. For opportunistic species, like many birds, urban waste offers alternative food which in turn may lead to plastic ingestion with potential negative effects. We assessed the incidence of plastics and other marine debris in breeding Kelp Gull (Larus dominicanus) diet at nine colonies located along ~2400 km of coastline from southern Buenos Aires to southern Chubut, Argentina, using regurgitated pellets (n = 2355) and chick stomach content samples (n = 588). Plastics were recorded at all colonies, and incidence varied between 0.0 and 16.2% in adult pellets and 0.0–12.5% in chick stomach content samples, depending on the colony, breeding stage and year. Contrary to our expectation, incidence of debris including plastics in Kelp Gull diet was relatively low despite its opportunistic feeding habits and widespread use of refuse dumps, even at colonies located close (<10 km) to these anthropogenic food subsidies.

Microplastics have been found in all environmental compartments investigated so far, even reaching remote areas. However, their presence in Antarctic freshwaters has not been yet reported. Here, we investigated the occurrence of microplastics in a stream from an Antarctic Specially Protected Area (Byers Peninsula, Livingston Island - ASPA No. 126), which is subject to stringent environmental protection measures as a result of which it is considered a pristine international reference site for inland waters research. Our results showed the presence of three types of microplastics in a freshwater seasonal stream, namely four polyester fibers, one black and three transparent; two acrylic fibers, one transparent and one red; and two transparent polytetrafluoroethylene films. The length and width of these fibers and films were in the 400–3546 μm (average 1118 μm), and 10–1026 μm (average 199 μm) ranges respectively. The concentration of MP was 0.95 items/1000 m³ with estimated variability in the 0.47–1.43 items/1000 m³ range. This is the first report of the presence of microplastics in Antarctic freshwater with the uniqueness that it is an Antarctic Specially Protected Area, meaning that plastic pollution reached even the most remote and pristine environments in the planet.

The current study aimed to develop a suitable molecular marker [Linear alkylbenzenes (LABs)] approach for pollution determination in mangrove oysters of peninsular Malaysia. C. belcheri species were collected from rivers of Merbok, Perai, Klang, Muar and PulauMerambong (An Island). The LABs were extracted from C. belcheri and determined using GC–MS. The LABs indices which included I/E, L/S and C13/C12 were applied to describe the sources and biodegradation of LABs. The results revealed that the maximum concentrations were detected in oysters from Klang (27.91 ng g⁻¹dw), while the lowest concentrations were detected in oysters from Merbok (8.12 ng g⁻¹dw). Moreover, I/E ratios varied between 2.83 and 6.40, indicating the secondary treatment effluents being discharged to coastal zones. The results of this study suggested that the oysters absorbed LABs mainly in dissolved phase. Therefore, mangrove oysters are a good biosensor for LABs contamination in the aquatic environment.

2020
Lee, Young-Sun | Lim, Jae-Eun | Lee, Sunggyu | Moon, Hyo-Bang
Due to regulations on phthalates, non-phthalate plasticizers (NPPs) are now used as an alternative. Limited studies have been conducted on the occurrence and distribution of NPPs. In this study, sediment samples were collected from 50 locations along the Korean coast to assess the occurrence, distribution, sources, and ecological risks of phthalates and NPPs. Phthalates and NPPs were detected in all sediments, indicating ubiquitous contamination of the coastal environment. Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) and di(2-ethylhexyl)terephthalate (DEHT) were dominant, suggesting that DEHT could be an emerging contaminant of concern. The highest concentrations of phthalates and NPPs were found in sediment samples from harbors, implying they are contaminated hotspots. Sedimentary organic carbon was a major factor governing the distribution of phthalates and NPPs. Significant correlations were observed among phthalates and NPPs, suggesting similar sources and geochemical behavior. DEHP concentration exceeded threshold values, indicating potential health risks to benthic organisms in sediments.

In characterization of food borne pathogens from the environment, assessment of virulence, genetic diversity and AMR are essential preludes to formulate preventive strategies and to combat the spread. This study aimed to identify and characterize pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus in the coastal aquaculture farms of Kerala, India. Twenty-seven β-haemolytic V. parahaemolyticus were isolated from 7 out of 40 farms studied. Among the 27 isolates, 15 possessed the tdh gene and 4 had trh. ERIC PCR and PFGE illustrated the presence of pathogenic isolates that shared genetic similarity with clinical strains. One pathogenic isolate was identified to be multidrug resistant (MDR) and 59% exhibited a MAR index of 0.2 or above. Seventy four percent of the pathogenic isolates were ESBL producers and 3.7% of them were carbapenemase producers phenotypically. This asks for adoption of control measures during farming to prevent the transmission of pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus to the environment and food chain.

2020
Su, Chenli | Chen, Lanming
Vibrio parahaemolyticus can cause severe gastroenteritis, septicaemia and even death in humans. Continuous monitoring of V. parahaemolyticus contamination in aquatic products is imperative for ensuring food safety. In this study, we isolated and characterized 561 V. parahaemolyticus strains recovered from 23 species of commonly consumed shellfish, crustaceans, and fish collected in July and August of 2017 in Shanghai, China. The bacterium was not isolated from two fish species Carassius auratus and Parabramis pekinensis. The results revealed a very low occurrence of pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus carrying the toxin genes trh (0.2%) and tdh (0.0%). However, high percentages of resistance to the antimicrobial agents ampicillin (93.0%), rifampin (82.9%), streptomycin (75.4%) and kanamycin (50.1%) were found. A high incidence of tolerance to the heavy metals Hg²⁺ (74.7%) and Zn²⁺ (56.2%) was also observed in the isolates. ERIC-PCR-based fingerprinting of MDR isolates (77.5%) revealed 428 ERIC-genotypes, demonstrating remarkable genetic variation among the isolates. The results of this study support the urgent need for food safety risk assessment of aquatic products.

2020
Li, Su Fang | Liu, Yan | Gong, Qing Li | Gao, Xu | Li, Jing Yu
Triphenyltin chloride (TPTCL) is a well-known marine pollutant that may constitute major environmental threats to seaweed mariculture. In the present study, the toxic effects of TPTCL on physiology and ultrastructure of cultivated sporophytes of Undaria pinnatifida were investigated under different TPTCL concentrations ranging from 0 to 100 μg L⁻¹. Significant negative effects of increased TPTCL concentration were detected in the relative growth rates, survival percentages and chlorophyll a contents of young and adult sporophytes. Low TPTCL concentrations could significantly stimulate the activities of enzymes related to nitrogen metabolism. The chloroplast, mitochondria and nucleus inside cells were greatly damaged by TPTCL. Meanwhile, significant increases of electron dense deposits and physodes were found. Additionally, young sporophytes exhibited greater tolerance to TPTCL stress than adult sporophytes. The results of this study indicate that coastal TPTCL pollution could reduce the productivity and quality of cultivated U. pinnatifida.

Within Southern California, east Pacific green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) forage year-round, taking advantage of diverse food resources, including seagrass, marine algae, and invertebrates. Assessing persistent organic pollutants (POP) in green turtle aggregations in the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge (SBNWR, n = 17) and San Diego Bay (SDB, n = 25) can help quantify contamination risks for these populations. Blood plasma was analyzed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorinated pesticides (OCPs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). PCBs and body size explained much of the separation of turtles by foraging aggregation in a principal component analysis. Turtles from SDB had significantly (p < 0.001) higher total PCBs than SBNWR turtles. Most PCBs detected in turtles were non-dioxin-like PCB congeners (153, 138, 99) that are associated with neurotoxicity. Recaptured turtles' POP levels changed significantly over time indicating significant variation in POP levels through time and space, even among adjacent foraging locations.

2020
Anyanwu, Ihuoma N. | Sikoki, Francis D. | Semple, K. T. (Kirk T.)
Chemical-surveys of sediments are source of information about historical-pollution in aquatic-ecosystems, because ecological/human-health risks may arise from polycyclic-aromatic-hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitrogen-PAHs presence in aquatic-environments, particularly sediments, where they partition. Despite this, sediment-PAHs/N-PAHs have not been reported in the Niger Delta. This study investigated vertical-profiles of PAHs/N-PAHs in 2 cm-intervals-segments from Bonny Estuary, Niger Delta. Analysis showed that ƩPAHs/ƩN-PAHs in segments ranged from 8699 to 22,528 μg/kg and 503 to 2020 μg/kg, respectively. Abundant-PAH/N-PAH are 2,6-dimethyl-naphthalene and benzo[a]acridine. PAHs/N-PAHs in the samples appeared to be from petrogenic and pyrogenic-sources. Petrogenic-PAHs/N-PAHs were predominated by 2-, 3-rings, alkylated-substituents, while, pyrogenic-PAHs/N-PAHs were dominated by 4-, 5-, 6-rings. Surface-sediments were dominated by petrogenic-PAHs/N-PAHs while, deeper-cores were heavily-contaminated with pyrogenic-PAHs/N-PAHs. ƩPAHs exceeded the ISQGs and PELs of CSQGs. Ʃ-quinoline/Ʃ-acridine exceeded the guidelines for protection of aquatic-life. Furthermore, there are concerns over toxic-ratios >70% in the estuary. Such surveys may be helpful in future sediment-management-decisions for contaminated-systems and long-term-monitoring of sediments to assess remediation/recovery.Distinct sources of PAHs and N-PAHs exist in the Niger Delta ecosystem and, there are concerns over toxic ratios >70% in the oil rich region and the potential for adverse biological effects.
