Oceanic plastic pollution caused by Danish seine fishing in Norway Полный текст

Wear and tear on fishing gear is a sparsely investigated source of microplastic pollution in the sea. In Norway, Danish seine ropes and trawls are the fishing gears that contribute most to this pollution. The main reason for this pollution is that the seine ropes are dragged along the seabed over a considerable distance, creating a friction force that results in high ropes wear. This note reports the findings after examining the wear of Danish seine ropes used in Norwegian fisheries. The results show that, in Norway alone, an average of 77 to 97 tons of plastic will be added to the sea annually due to this specific fishing gear. Aggregated to include all fly dragging, anchor seining, and pair seining globally, this number is estimated to be about 311 tons per year.

The potential release of metals, especially copper (Cu) during mining of seafloor massive sulphides (SMS), represents a potential toxicological threat to cold-water coral (CWC) habitats. Herein, we evaluated for the first time the response of the whip coral Viminella flagellum to short-term acute Cu exposure. Nubbins of V. flagellum were exposed to Cu concentrations of 0 (control); 60; 150; 250; 450 and 600 μg/L for 96 h. After exposure, V. flagellum nubbins were transferred to a continuous flow-through aquarium and feed once a day for 3 weeks. No immediate mortality was detected during the short-term Cu exposure. However, a delayed mortality, which was concentration dependent was observed. The first signs of tissue loss occurred after 1 week of recovery in non-contaminated conditions in V. flagellum nubbins previously exposed to Cu concentrations of 60 and 150 μg/L followed by nubbins exposed to Cu concentrations of 250, 450 μg/L after 2 weeks and 600 μg/L after 3 weeks. A delayed mortality impact should be considered in future Cu tolerance experiments and scenarios of deep-sea mining exploitation.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) transmit many chemical contaminants to aquatic environments. Quantitative data on micropollutant emissions via WWTPs are needed for environmental risk assessments and evaluation of mitigation measures. This study compiled published data on substances analysed in effluents from WWTPs in the Baltic Sea region, assessed country related differences in the data sets and estimated micropollutant inputs to the Baltic Sea catchment. Concentration data were found for 1090 substances analysed at 650 WWTPs. Heterogeneity and low number of data points for most substances hindered adequate comparisons of country specific concentrations. Emission estimates were made for the 280 substances analysed in at least five WWTPs in years 2010 to 2019. For selected substances, mass loads were compared to previously published estimations. The study provides data useful for national and Baltic Sea-scale pressure analysis and risk assessments. However, it also highlights the need for broad scope monitoring of micropollutants in wastewater.

The Baltic Sea is a sensitive environment that is affected by chemical pollution derived from multiple natural and anthropogenic sources. The overall aim of this study was to estimate the load of metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from shipping and leisure boating, relative other sources, to the Baltic Sea and to identify possible measures that could lead to major reductions in the loads of hazardous substances from maritime shipping and leisure boating. The use of copper-based antifouling paints, and operation of scrubbers in open loop mode, were the two most dominant identified sources of hazardous substances to the Baltic Sea. Open loop scrubbers accounted for 8.5 % of the total input of anthracene to the sea. More than a third of the total load of copper can be reduced if copper-free antifouling paints or other biocide-free antifouling strategies are used on ships and leisure boats.

Although considerable research progress on the effects of anthropogenic disturbance in the deep sea has been made in recent years, our understanding of these impacts at community level remains limited. Here, we studied deep-sea assemblages of Sicily (Mediterranean Sea) subject to different intensities of benthic trawling using environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding and taxonomic identification of meiofauna communities. Firstly, eDNA metabarcoding data did not detect trawling impacts using alpha diversity whereas meiofauna data detected a significant effect of trawling. Secondly, both eDNA and meiofauna data detected significantly different communities across distinct levels of trawling intensity when we examined beta diversity. Taxonomic assignment of the eDNA data revealed that Bryozoa was present only at untrawled sites, highlighting their vulnerability to trawling. Our results provide evidence for community-wide impacts of trawling, with different trawling intensities leading to distinct deep-sea communities. Finally, we highlight the need for further studies to unravel understudied deep-sea biodiversity.

A number of trace elements (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Nb, Mo, Ag, Cd, Pb, U and the rare earth elements – REE) were analyzed in the dissolved phase, suspended particulate matter and in different organs (gills, hepatopancreas, and the rest of soft tissue) in mussels of the native Mytilus galloprovincialis and invasive Xenostrobus securis species in the Vigo Ria (NW Iberian Peninsula) in order to assess potential differences in their bioaccumulation patterns. Results obtained do not show significant differences in the bioaccumulation of trace elements by M. galloprovincialis and X. securis, except for Zn and Ag. In the case of Zn, a 4-fold enrichment in M. galloprovincialis compared to X. securis was found. The most important differences between species were observed for Ag, with approximately 40-fold higher concentrations in X. securis. Such elevated Ag bioaccumulation by X. securis can be useful for Ag biomonitoring using these invasive species in this area.

The advent of Multicollector ICP-MS inaugurated the analysis of new metal isotope systems, the so-called “non-traditional” isotopes. They are now available tools to study geochemical and ecotoxicological aspects of marine metal contamination and hence, to push the frontiers of our knowledge. However, such applications are still in their infancy, and an accessible state-of-the-art describing main applications, obstacles, gaps, and directions for further development was missing from the literature. This paper fills this gap and aims to encourage the marine scientific community to explore the contributions of this newly available information for the fields of chemical risk assessment, biomonitoring, and trophic transfer of metal contaminants. In the current “Anthropocene” epoch, metal contamination will continue to threaten marine aquatic ecosystems, and “non-traditional” isotopes can be a valuable tool to detect human-induced changes across time-space involving metal contaminants, and their interaction with marine biota.

Contributions of Pacific Islands countries to marine plastic debris are disproportionate to the effects on people's connections to the ocean. Plastic waste management initiatives face challenges in containing waste and consequently plastics plague coastal environments. The Seabin, a floating trash skimmer, presents a novel and replicable approach to collecting and cataloguing marine plastics. The objectives of the study were to conduct an audit of marine plastic debris within the breakwaters of the University of the South Pacific, Marine Campus at Laucala Bay while simultaneously gauging the effectiveness of the Seabin and providing recommendations to enhance its utility. Inorganic debris was comprised entirely of plastics while the majority of debris collected was organic. This study provides the first assessment of floating marine plastic debris in an inshore environment of a Pacific Island country. Plastic debris assessments have the potential to inform policy and pivot management efforts to mitigate plastic waste pollution.

Estimated natural background levels (NBLs) are needed to assess groundwater chemical status according to the EU Groundwater Directive. They are commonly derived for different substances by applying statistical methodologies. Due to the complexity of the sea water intrusion process, some of those methods do not always provide appropriate assessment of chloride NBLs. This paper analyzes the applicability of different NBL estimation methods in five EU coastal aquifers with significant differences in available datasets and hydrogeological settings. A sensitivity analysis of results to different constraints was performed to remove samples with anthropogenic impacts. A novel statistical approach combining different methods to identify the range of chloride NBLs is proposed. In all pilots the estimated NBLs were below 85 mg/L and fitted well with previous studies and expert judgment, except Campina del Faro aquifer (the maximum being 167.5 mg/L). Although this approach is more time consuming, it provides a more robust solution.

The control of macroalgal bloom development is central for protecting estuarine ecosystems. The identification of the nutrients limiting the development of macroalgal blooms, and their most likely sources is crucial for management strategies. Three Irish estuaries (Argideen, Clonakilty and Tolka) affected by green tides were monitored from June 2016 to August 2017. During each sampling occasion, biomass abundances, tissue N and P contents, and δ¹⁵N were determined for tubular and laminar morphologies of Ulva. All estuaries showed maximum biomass during summer and minimum during winter. Tissue nutrient contents revealed P rather than N limitation. The δ¹⁵N during the peak bloom indicated agriculture as the most likely source of nitrogen in the Argideen and Clonakilty, and urban wastewaters in the Tolka. No differences in the δ¹⁵N, and the tissue nutrients content were observed between morphologies. The period between May and July is most suitable for bioassessment of green tides.
