Utilising a potential coastal trace element bioindicator requires understanding its accumulation patterns under varying environmental scenarios. The present study aimed to understand, from two experiments, the influence and effect of low light (15.3 μmol photons m⁻² s⁻¹) and variable salinity (normal 36 and reduced 29) on Zostera muelleri accumulating variable Cu concentrations (control, low 5 μg L⁻¹ and high 50 μg L⁻¹) in order to determine its capability as a potential trace element bioindicator. Initial (24 h) leaf Cu concentration was in proportion to exposure Cu concentrations, irrespective of manipulated environmental conditions, suggesting passive accumulation. Final below-ground Cu concentrations, during the low light experiment, significantly increased over time, suggesting active Cu accumulation. Zostera muelleri leaves could act as a Cu bioindicator at times of reduced light and salinity while further interpretation is required of below-ground Cu concentrations. It is recommended that Z. muelleri could be utilised as a Cu bioindicator.

Microplastic (MP) pollution is an emerging contaminant in aquatic environments worldwide. Nonetheless, the developmental toxicity of MPs in the early life stages of fish and the mechanisms involved are not yet fully understood. The present study investigated the effects of different concentrations of polystyrene (PS) MPs on the early development of the marine model fish the medaka Oryzias melastigma. Our results showed that waterborne exposure to PS MPs significantly delayed the hatching time, altered the heartbeat and decreased the hatching rate of embryos. Furthermore, the genes involved in cardiac development, encoding for embryo-hatching enzymes, as well as inflammatory responses were significantly upregulated. The transcriptome results showed that mainly the pathways involved in metabolism, immune response, genetic information processing and diseases were significantly enriched. These results demonstrate that PS MPs negatively impact embryogenesis and the immune response of O. melastigma.

Heavy metal pollution is related to the fall in European eel (Anguilla anguilla) populations. The Mar Menor lagoon (SE Spain) is home to an endangered population of this species, which is still caught for human consumption. The presence of Pb, Cd and Hg in the livers and muscles and the Se:Hg ratio in muscle of 150 eels from this lagoon were determined. Pb concentrations were higher than those reported from other populations in the world, while Cd and Hg concentrations in the tissues analysed were lower. In terms of food safety, Se concentrations play an important role in sequestering Hg in eels from this lagoon.

the levels of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg), all known to be harmful heavy metals, in European eels from the Mar Menor lagoon were investigated. On the other hand, the dietary selenium (Se) status is highly related to Hg toxicity (Ralston and Raymond, 2010), and the antagonist effect of Se on Hg is well known since many years ago. The molar ratio Se:Hg may provide an accurate index of risk from fish consumption, and the Selenium Health Benefit Value (HBVSe, Ralston et al., 2016) has been recently considered as a good instrument to better understand of the Se available that remains after its interaction with Hg. Thus, due to the importance of factors affecting public health, information regarding Se concentrations, Se:Hg ratio and the HBVSe were also analysed. | Heavy metal pollution is related to the fall in European eel (Anguilla anguilla) populations. We report the occurrence and genomic analysis of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (CTX-M)-producing Escherichia coli in anthropogenically polluted coastal waters of Southeast Brazil. E. coli strains belonging to sequence types (STs) ST10, ST38, ST155 and ST1284 exhibited a wide resistome, with genes conferring resistance to medically relevant antimicrobials and heavy metals, and a halophilic behavior (tolerance to 9–10% NaCl). These findings suggest a heavy contamination in this area by critical priority bacteria adapted to marine environments, which might have negative impacts on human and ocean health.

Given a large quantity of epiphytes and other material attached on eelgrass leaf blades, we explored the relationship between eelgrass sheaths and different-aged leaf blades (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th leaf blade) on nutrient content and their ratios (C, N, P, C/N, C/P, and N/P) to identify whether eelgrass sheaths could be used to instead of leaf blades in terms of nutrient content. In addition, we explored the relationship between eelgrass sheath length and shoot length. Results showed that there were significant relationships between the sheath and leaf blades in terms of N and P content and their ratios. For length analysis, there was a significant relationship between sheath length and shoot length, and shoot length was approximately four to five times (mean 4.4659) longer than sheath length, such that shoot length can be estimated by sheath length. These significant relationships suggest that eelgrass sheath could be used as a suitable predictor of leaf blade in length and nutrient stoichiometry, thus eelgrass sheath could be used as an indicator for further eelgrass nutrient monitoring and research.

Negative impacts of invasive species are widely accepted, but there is increasing evidence that neutral or positive effects are more prevalent than initially recognized, particularly for species which are of different functional / trophic group than the invader. We used a BACI design to examine how fish communities responded to the invasion of Halimeda incrassata, an ecosystem engineer which colonizes sandy habitats in the Western Mediterranean. While invasion did not alter overall species richness or diversity, we detected positive, negative and neutral responses by different fish species, which has important ecological and socio-economic implications. Contrasting responses likely result from different alterations that this alga conferred, putatively increasing prey availability via habitat creation, or limiting burial and camouflage abilities of fish. Our results highlight that effects of ecosystem engineers can be multiple and complex, and that predictions of invasive species are not straight forward.

This study separates marine carrying capacity into four key dimensions, i.e., social, economic, resource, and ecological, and uses the entropy method to evaluate the carrying capacity of China's 11 coastal regions during the period 2007–2016. We then predict the values of marine carrying capacity in the subsequent five years (2017–2021) using the grey Verhulst model. Results reveal a significant disparity in marine carrying capacity among the 11 coastal regions of China, and social and ecological carrying capacities illustrate among the four subcategories. Pearl River Delta in the south has the highest marine carrying capacity value and shows an increasing trend, while Yangtze River Delta and Bohai Rim Region in the north are stable. With regard to the predicted values for 2017–2021, forecasting results illustrate that the industrial structure of China's coastal areas is gradually turning towards the mode of diversified and comprehensive utilization of marine resources.

Ficopomatus enigmaticus was adopted as model species for ecotoxicological bioassay, with its larval development as endpoint. Two different populations of the same species, collected in areas far from each other (Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean), were exposed to multi-walled carbon nanotubes, a class of emerging pollutants with a constantly increasing relevance in the landscape of nanomaterials production. Moreover, a molecular analysis based on Cyt b amplification and sequencing, was carried out to confirm that both populations belong to the same species. The aim of the present work was to strengthen existing results about F. enigmaticus relevance in ecotoxicological bioassays, adding the variable of population effect. For both populations the concentration-response curve of effect at different toxicant concentrations was similar and, at certain concentrations, overlapping, confirming the ecological relevance of the assay. These results posed an interesting acceptance on the introduction of this species as model in ecotoxicological bioassay scenery, underlining the relevance of a widespread wild species to compare effects of chemicals and environmental samples over large distances using the same bioassay.

Plastic marine debris (PMD) is of global concern. To help address this problem, a novel approach for estimating PMD volumes using a combination of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) surveys and image processing based on deep learning is proposed. A three-dimensional model and orthoscopic image of a beach, constructed via Structure from Motion software using UAV-derived data, enabled PMD volumes to be computed by edge detection through image processing. The accuracy of the method was verified by estimating the volumes of test debris placed on a beach in known sizes and shapes. The proposed approach shows potential for estimating PMD volumes with an error of <5%. Compared with subjective methods based on beach surveys, this approach can accurately, rapidly, and objectively calculate the PMD volume on a beach and can be used to improve the efficiency of beach surveys and identify beaches that need preferential cleaning.

The outbreak of a large-scale green tide (Ulva prolifera) will have a serious impact on marine environment, ecological functions, landscape, and coastal social economy. Eutrophication is generally considered to be the most important driving factor of this phenomenon. It is difficult to obtain the pressure-impact relationship between land-based loading and green tides by only surveying or monitoring, whereas modeling can perform this task easily. In this study, therefore, a hydro-biogeochemical model was established and verified by the measured hydrodynamic and water quality variables. In the initial outbreak area of Jiangsu coast, China, we studied the relationship between U. prolifera bloom and the driving factors of nutrient loads and structures by modeling different scenarios of land source inputs. It was found that the ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus could be affected significantly, which triggered the bloom of U. prolifera. When the land-based input doubled or halved, the dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration increased 20.6% or decreased 9.5%, respectively, which might result in 14.5% increase or 46.3% decrease in the green tide, respectively. It was also found that the nutrient distribution and structure was affected by the land-based load, which caused the outbreak of U. prolifera. Moreover, the total nutrient load must be controlled to prevent the outbreak of green tide in the Jiangsu coast.
