Analysis of persistent organochlorine pesticides in shellfish and their risk assessment from aquafarms in Taiwan

In Taiwan, freshwater clams (Corbicula fluminea) and hard clams (Meretrix lusoria) are the most frequently raised shellfish in land-based pond aquaculture, but research on the accumulation of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in these shellfish is limited. We detected the levels of 14 OCPs in 62 shellfish from Taiwanese aquafarms by performing gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. OCP residues were detected in 4.84% of the samples including readings of 0.04 mg/kg chlordane (in a freshwater clam), 0.03 mg/g p,p′-DDE (in a freshwater clam), and 0.02 mg/g p,p′-DDE (in a hard clam). However, the associated estimated daily intake values were less than the acceptable daily intake levels of chlordane and p,p′-DDE Therefore, the consumption of these shellfish presents no immediate health risks. Our findings contribute to food safety and serve as a reference for OCP screenings for aquatic shellfish.

Illegal fishing may trigger structural disruption of the food chain and even damage the entire marine ecosystem. This paper proposes a new method for quantifying the value of eco-environment damage caused by illegal fishing; as an example, we used an illegal fishing case of anchovies in the vicinity of the Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve. Based on the data from the field investigation and literature, we estimated the number and age distribution of illegally harvested anchovies. Additionally, the potential number of the offspring was calculated according to the potential number and survival rate of anchovy eggs. Due to the unavailability of commercial anchovy fries, “alternative stock enhancement” was recommended to restore the damaged eco-environment. Notably, the alternative species should have similar economic value, status in the food chain, and living areas to anchovies. Eventually, we selected Liza haematocheilus as the alternative species and calculated the total eco-environment recovery cost.

Eutrophication and algal blooms occur frequently in coastal waters of the Makran, for which phosphorus is an important driving factor. Therefore, in this study, sequential extraction procedure was used to evaluate abundance of five phosphorus chemical species. Total phosphorus (TP) concentration ranged from 672.3 to 2031.9 μg/g in pre-monsoon and 771.7 to 2095.7 μg/g in post-monsoon. More than 87% of TP was inorganic P and contribution of organic phosphorus was low. Potential bioavailable P (PBAP) comprised of 52.1 and 35.5% of TP in the pre and post-monsoon, respectively. Average phosphorus pollution index was higher than one in all stations and seasons, implying that sediments in the study area are polluted by phosphorus and are under eutrophication risk. Thus, in the future, foregoing information will be important for assessment of phosphorus loading and pollution in the Makran.

The intelligent method proposed herein is formulated on a deep learning technique which can identify, localise and map the shape of plastic debris in the marine environment. Utilising images depicting plastic litter from six beaches in Cyprus, the developed tool pointed to a plastic litter density of 0.035 items/m². Extrapolated to the entire shorelines of the island, the intelligent approach estimated about 66,000 plastic articles weighting a total of ≈1000 kg. Besides deducing the plastic litter density, the dimensions of all documented plastic litter were determined with the aid of the OpenCV Contours image processing tool. Results revealed that the dominant object length ranged between 10 and 30 cm which is in agreement with the length of common plastic litter often spoiling these coastlines. Concluding, only in-situ visual scan sample surveys and no manual collection means were used to predict the density and the dimensions of the plastic litter.

The use of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS, aka drones) images for mapping macro-litter in the environment have been exponentially increasing in the recent years. In this work, we developed a multi-class Neural Network (NN) to automatically identify stranded plastic litter categories on an UAS-derived orthophoto.The best results were assessed for items that did not have substantial intra-class colour variability, such as octopus pots and fishing ropes (F-score = 61%, on average). Instead, performance was poor (37%) for plastic bottles and fragments, due to their changing intra-class colours. On average, the performance improved 24% when the binary detection (litter/non-litter, F-Score = 73%) was considered, however this approach did not discriminate the litter categories.This work gives a new perspective for the automated litter detection on drone images, suggesting that colour-based approach can be used to improve the categorization of stranded litter on UAS orthophoto.

Higher levels of persistent pollutants (Σ16PCB, Σ6PBDE, ΣHCH, ΣDDT, ΣCHL) were detected in fresh eggs of Common Terns Sterna hirundo from Rockabill Island near Dublin (Ireland's industrialised capital city) compared to Common and Arctic Terns S. paradisaea from Ireland's west coast. Intra-clutch variation of pollutant levels in Common Terns was shown to be low, providing further evidence that random sampling of one egg may be an appropriate sampling strategy. Significant differences in pollutant concentrations were detected between fresh and abandoned eggs on Rockabill. However, abandoned eggs can still provide a useful approximation of pollutants in bird eggs if non-destructive sampling is preferred. Levels of p,p’ –DDE in tern eggs have decreased over time according to this study, in concurrence with worldwide trends. Results in this study fall below toxicological thresholds for birds and OSPARs EcoQO thresholds set for Common Tern eggs, except for mercury and HCH in the west coast.

The Port of Genoa (north-western Mediterranean Sea) receives sediments from two different catchment areas (Bisagno and Polcevera torrents). The aim of the work is to evaluate if Rare Earth Elements (REEs) could be used to identify the two sedimentary inputs and to unravel the origin of inorganic contaminants in an anthropised basin. REE results constitute a baseline for this port. The main REE-bearing minerals are phosphates and zircon. As, Cd, Hg, Pb, and Sn concentrate in the sediments closer to the Bisagno Torrent mouth, and the correlation with Ca and Light-REEs suggests their plausible geological origin. Co, Mn, and Ni maxima lie in the sediments closer to the Polcevera Torrent. Their correlation with Middle-REEs and Mg suggest that ophiolitic rocks could explain their presence. Cr, Cu, V, and Zn do not show a clear correlation with REEs, and their origin probably is a combination of natural and anthropogenic sources.

The concentrations of emerging and persistent organic contaminants (EPOC) in oysters (CO) from Aveiro Lagoon are represented as a function of their concentrations in water (CW) and sediment (CS) using linear and generalized additive models (LM, GAM). Additionally, four sampling seasons, octanol/water partition coefficients (K) and type of EPOC (pyrethroids, flame-retardants, musks, UV filters, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, others) are included in the models. The probabilities of detection of EPOC in water, sediment and oysters are analyzed by GAM. The behavior of contaminants in water is determined by K with a clear seasonal trend. Sediments are reservoirs for hydrophobic compounds with less seasonal variation. Seasonal changes are found for CO, the last being determined additively both by CW and hydrophobicity from one side and by CS and type of contaminants from the other side. The seasonal change of EPOC concentration in water, sediment and oysters is specific for each contaminant type.

In this paper, a marine environmental sensitivity index system was constructed based on three factors: the marine biological species sensitivity, the marine ecological value sensitivity and the social and economic sensitivity. Combined with numerical simulations of ¹³⁷Cs in the Beibu Gulf under the condition of a level-7 nuclear accident, a comprehensive risk assessment of marine radioactivity under the simulated accident in the Beibu Gulf was carried out. The results show that the areas at high risk and medium-to-high risk to marine radioactivity are mainly concentrated within 30 km of the Fangchenggang Nuclear Power Plant. The medium-risk areas are mainly distributed in sea areas within 30–50 km of the nuclear power plant, and the other sea areas are low-risk areas. The distribution of the risk sources and the characteristics of the regional tidal currents are the main factors affecting the magnitude and distribution of the comprehensive risk of regional marine radioactivity.

The reconstruction of pollution in aquatic ecosystems is a useful tool to evaluate the effectiveness of management actions. Cartagena Bay (Colombia, Caribbean Sea) is one of the most impacted coastal zones in Colombia by a wide variety of human activities. A sediment core was dated using ²¹⁰Pb and used to reconstruct the historical input of heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and organochlorinated pesticides to the bay. The highest pollutant concentrations were observed in the deeper core layers. The maximum mercury concentration (18.76 μg g⁻¹) was observed at 61 cm depth, corresponding to 1967, when a chlor-alkali plant was operating. Since all pollutant concentrations have decreased due to better industrial management policies, their presence is a potential contamination risk through sediment remobilization and pollutant resuspension.
