Consequences of a catastrophic flood on the habitat quality and the concurrent responses of the bentho-pelagic community were studied in Cochin estuary, a eutrophic estuary along the southwest coast of India. The episodic flood in 2018 led to a marked decline in the dissolved nutrients and heavy metal concentrations in water and sediments of the estuary. The pre-flood phytoplankton abundance dominated by a bloom-forming species Cerataulina bicornis experienced a significant drop after the flood. Contrarily, zooplankton and macrobenthos responded favorably towards the flood-imposed habitat alterations. Higher susceptibility to heavy metal pollution and increased grazing pressure from gelatinous carnivores restricted the abundance of Copepoda, the dominant zooplankton taxon during pre-flood. The lower heavy metal concentration in the sediment after the flood favored higher macrobenthic abundance and diversity with a conspicuous change in the community structure from opportunistic polychaetes, indicators of pollution to molluscans and crustaceans, indicators of the healthy benthic zones.

Microplastics are a major environmental issue of concern. Since 2016, Hudson River Park has collaborated with Brooklyn College to survey microplastics within Park waters between Chambers and 59th Streets in Manhattan. It was hypothesized that microplastic concentration is influenced by proximity to combined sewer overflow (CSO) points, precipitation, and tides. Samples were collected at channel and near-shore locations at downtown and midtown sites. Microplastics were analyzed following NOAA methods via stereo microscope. Concentrations in 2018 were higher than in 2016, 2017 and 2019 ((ANOVA F (1,70) = 5.2, p < 0.03*; post hoc Tukey test p < 0.009*)), and near-shore sites tended to exhibit higher concentrations than channel sites (ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey: p < 0.03*). Microfibers were not fully accounted for and fragments were highly prevalent in all samples (~70%). Additional data will improve the understanding of the presence of microplastics in the Lower Hudson and elucidate the effects of wet weather on plastic concentrations.

The sources of microbiological contamination in shellfish harvesting areas in the Ashtamudi and Vembanad estuaries were identified through a sanitary survey. Samples of shellfish and waters were tested for faecal indicator bacteria. Both estuaries receive high levels of contamination from septic tank discharges and areas with high numbers of birds and livestock. An assessment to illustrate the classification status of the harvesting areas indicated that 64% of oyster and 58% of clam samples from Ashtamudi and 54% of mussel samples from Vembanad would comply with the lower class B standard of the EU classification system. Most water results would comply with the faecal coliform standard for ‘Prohibited’ areas under the US classification system. None of the water samples from Ashtamudi were below the standard for ‘Approved’ areas. Pollution reduction measures and implementation of a sanitation programme according to international best practice would improve consumer health protection.

Marine litter is one of the most pressing problems of our time and a major threat to ocean health; much of it comes from land-based sources, including from beachgoer activities. This study investigates how product design could influence littering behaviors of beachgoers when applied to beach trash cans (TCs). Over the course of six weeks three differently designed TCs were placed on a Mediterranean Sea tourist beach in Israel while observers tracked the behavior of 536 nearby groups (“entities”) of beachgoers. Researchers analyzed: a) entities' locational choices; b) materials discarded in the TCs; and c) littering behaviors around the TCs. Based on the data collected, a “motivating” TC design performed best, encouraging the highest level of beachgoer interaction. Further research is needed in more and varied beach contexts, but this type of initial interdisciplinary research suggests how the design discipline could contribute to preventing marine litter from land-based sources.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are anthropogenic fluorinated compounds of concern for human and environmental health. There is no data on PFAS concentrations in marine bird eggs from the Western Indian Ocean. We analysed eight PFAS in eggs of fairy terns (Gygis alba), sooty terns (Onychoprion fuscatus), and common noddies (Anous stolidus) from St. Brandon's Atoll. Fairy tern eggs contained the highest concentrations, followed by sooty terns and common noddies. Perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUdA) had the highest mean concentration (2.3 ng/g wm), followed by perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) (2.0 ng/g wm), and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) (0.93 ng/g wm) in fairy tern eggs. Concentrations of all PFAS were lower than values found in literature. PFOS and PFOA concentrations were three orders of magnitude lower than toxicity reference values and levels of lowest-observed-adverse-effect-level concentrations. Eggs from St. Brandon's would be useful to monitor background changes on a regional and perhaps global scale.

Nitrogen fixation and its ecological regulation are poorly understood in the tropical estuaries, which are highly influenced by anthropogenic disturbances. In this study, we investigated the role of nutrient stoichiometry in the diversity, abundance and activity of N₂-fixing bacterial community and their seasonal variations in the water column of a tropical eutrophic estuary (Cochin estuary). The N₂ fixation rates in the estuary ranged from 0.1 to 2.0 nmol N₂ l⁻¹ h⁻¹, with higher activity during post-monsoon and lower during monsoon. The rates are appeared to be primarily controlled by dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorous (N:P) ratio. Clone library analysis of nitrogenase (nifH) gene revealed that the major N₂ fixing phylotypes belong to Cluster I and Cluster III diazotrophs. The overall findings of this study suggest that monsoon induced seasonal changes in nutrient stoichiometry control the distribution and activity of diazotrophs in a tropical estuary.

Compared to open sea environments, there is still limited knowledge about microplastic levels in semi-enclosed systems such as coastal lagoons. This work aims to assess the levels of MPs in the waters of an urban lagoon (Bizerte lagoon, northern Tunisia) and to study the effects of environmental factors on their distribution and abundance. Average concentration of total MPs was found to be 453.0 ± 335.2 items m⁻³. The upper 25 cm water layer of the lagoon is most likely to contain ~16.99 × 10⁹ MPs items (which correspond to a total mass of 42.47 t). Fibers were the primary MPs types encountered, and most of MPs particles identified were white and clear-colored. Polyethylene and polypropylene were the predominant polymer types in Bizerte lagoon. Among the various potential plastic sources of MPs, unmanaged domestic plastic wastes are likely to be the major source of plastic pollution in the lagoon. Several environmental factors appeared to influence the distribution and density of MPs in the lagoon waters. These information contribute to better understand the dynamics of MPs in lagoons and to develop environmental management actions.

This study investigated the co-effect of microplastic polyvinylchloride and antibiotics tetracycline to partial nitrification process in treating high ammonia wastewater. The average ammonia oxidation rate of all reactors was 53.58, 56.17 and 42.08 mg·N/L·h in round 1, round 7 and round 13, respectively. The ammonia oxidation rate was reduced to 89.40%, 79.08%, 80.60%, 73.37%, 69.50%, 75.72%, 98.93% and 66.04% from 1st round of test to 13th round of test at reactor R1 to R8. The average nitrosation rate was always over 80% in all conditions tested. Tetracycline removal rate was attributed to sludge adsorption in all reactors and was increased continuously with the increment of tetracycline concentration. The nitrous oxide emission was keep decreasing from round 1 to round 13 in all reactors tested. The microbial community results revealed that with the existence of tetracycline and microplastics, the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes were reduced and Proteobacteria were increased.

Increasing coastal urbanization and shipping activity-related environmental pollution advocate the importance of assessment of port ecosystems. Fatty acid biomarkers, elemental components, and biopolymers were used to evaluate the composition of sedimentary organic matter and benthic trophic status of Kolkata (freshwater, enclosed docks) and Kandla (seawater, macrotidal) ports of India. The sediment fatty acid composition indicated relatively fresh and energy-rich organic matter of phytoplankton and bacterial origin inside Kolkata port than the outside riverine station and Kandla port. Biopolymeric carbon (BPC), used as an indicator of trophic status, revealed eutrophic condition in Kolkata port with high accumulation of organic matter of autochthonous origin, attributed to poor water flushing and input of anthropogenic wastes. In contrast, Kandla port was meso-oligotrophic, rich in bacteria, and terrestrial plant-derived materials. Such an assessment of ports' trophic status helps to evaluate the health of the ecosystem and in management practices.

Salmonella is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in humans worldwide, and the infection with multidrug-resistant strains can cause severe diseases. Many coastal cities around the world discharge their wastewaters into the marine environment. These wastewaters contain a variety of pathogenic microorganisms that may have a role in the contamination of this ecosystem and have potential risks for public health. Using an environmental approach, the present study investigated the presence of Salmonella in sediment and water samples collected from Port Blair Bays. In this environmental approach, the provided information about the diversity of the Salmonella serovars, antibiotic resistance and the prevalence of virulence factors in Salmonella, especially from the coastal waters of Port Blair Bays. The occurrence of Salmonellae was significantly higher in water column samples (2.9%) than in those taken from the marine sediments (0.7%). Of the 133 positive Salmonella strains, 22 different serovars were identified. Salmonella enterica serovar Senftenberg was the predominant serovar, being represented by 54 isolates (42.5%), followed by serovar Typhimurium (19 isolates [15%]) and serovar Agona (12 isolates [9.4%]). The presence of virulence genes (filC, sitC, hilA, invA, sipC, hilD, hilC, invF, invE, invH, sipF, aadA, pare, gyrA, spaP and parC) and susceptibility studies with 10 selected antibiotics were also performed. The results of this study revealed that all Salmonella isolates were positive for targeted virulence genes and were resistant to at least one antibiotic. Antibiotic susceptibility studies revealed the presence of multidrug resistant Salmonella strains in coastal water, which usually from land base sources end up in the marine environment and may pose a significant risk on public health.
