Prediction of biogas and pressure from rumen fermentation using plant extracts to enhance biodigestibility and mitigate biogases

Improving digestibility, fermentation characteristics, and reducing greenhouse biogases to protect the environment without the use of synthetic materials is an important goal of modern-day farming and nutritionist. Plant extracts are capable of solving these. This is due to the digestive enzymes and the bioactive components capable of performing antimicrobial functions inherent in these plants. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of standard maize substrate treated with selected herbs and spices extracts on ruminal environmental biogas production and pressure during fermentation via biogas production technique. Herbs (Azadirachta indica leaves (T1), Moringa oleifera leaves (T2), Ocimum gratissimum leaves (T3) and spices (Allium sativum bulb (T4), Zingiber officinale rhizome (T5)) were harvested, air dried, and milled using standard procedures. Methanolic extracts of the herbs and spices were prepared and used as additives at different concentrations (50, 100, and 150 μL) to the maize substrate for in vitro biogas production. Data were analyzed using regression analysis. There were significant (P < 0.05) differences across all the treatments on the volume and pressure of biogas. The pressure and volume of biogas when compared with the levels tested showed differences (P < 0.05) across all the treatments for the prediction of volume from pressure of biogas. The pressure and volume of gas produced in vitro increased (P < 0.05) and biogases decreased (P < 0.05) by the substrate treated with herbs and spices but for the drum stick leaves which was similar for the levels of concentration tested. This means that the level tested had a pronounced mitigation effect on pressure of biogas and volume of biogas produced. It was concluded that the herb and spice extracts have the potential to improve rumen fermentation and reduce the production of biogases in ruminant diet.

Assessing the potential impacts of nonpoint source (NPS) pollution and proposing sound control strategies are significant global challenges. However, few studies have provided insights into the quantitative risk analysis and efficient management of NPS pollution. This study formulated four evaluation criteria to characterize both the generation and migration of diffuse phosphorus. Multicriteria analysis and the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution were combined to develop a NPS pollution risk index model for the evaluation of the potential phosphorus loss at the basin scale. The proposed model is a simple and efficient tool that considers most factors that affect diffuse phosphorus. In the GIS environment, the spatial distribution of the risk index of diffuse phosphorus could be mapped and visualized in the Huai River Basin. With the natural breaks classification method, the study area was divided into the following five regions: a potentially polluted region (3.5%), a lightly polluted region (15.4%), a moderately polluted region (40.7%), a highly polluted region (31.5%), and a seriously polluted region (8.9%). Based on land use composition, geographical location, and sources of diffuse phosphorus of these five regions, corresponding prevention measures were introduced, thus facilitating the management of NPS pollution for policy makers.

Nanofiltration polyamide membranes naturally tend towards biofouling, due to their surface physicochemistries. Nisin, a type of short cationic amphiphilic peptide with antimicrobial properties, has been recognized as a safe antimicrobial for food biopreservation and biomedical applications. This study investigates the impact of nisin on the initial bacterial attachment to membranes, its anti-biofouling properties, and characterizes a non-monotonic correlation between nisin concentration and biofilm inhibition. Nisin was found to inhibit B. subtilis (G+) and P. aeruginosa (G−) attachment to both the nanofiltration membrane and the PES membrane. To determine the mechanism of action, we investigated the polysaccharides, protein, and eDNA as target components. We found that the quantities of polysaccharides and eDNA were significantly changed, resulting in bacterial death and anti-adhesion to membrane. However, there were no discernable impacts on protein. We postulated that nisin could prevent irreversible biofouling by decreasing adhesion, killing bacteria, and reducing biofilm formation. We examined membrane flux behavior through bench-scale cross-flow experiments at a set concentration of nisin (100 μg mL⁻¹), with membrane behavior being confirmed using CLSM images. Results showed that nisin could enhance anti-biofouling properties through both anti-adhesive and anti-bacterial effects, and therefore could be a novel strategy against biofouling of membranes.

Malva sylvestris L. is a widely consumed edible-medicinal plant growing all around the world. The aim of our study was the determination of the concentration levels of heavy metals in M. sylvestris L. samples and their extracts from polluted and non-polluted locations in Niš, Republic of Serbia. The analysis of heavy metals was performed by the AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy) method from soil, plants, and extracts. The heavy metals content (Fe, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Cd) in the soil and plants from the contaminated site is increased, but the coefficients of metal uptake are not significantly different in plants from polluted and non-polluted areas. The highest content of metals was found in aqueous, then water-alcoholic, and the smallest content was determined in alcoholic solutions. The content of the tested metals is within the limits recommended by international organizations, so the plant and its extracts can be safely used.

In pastures, the application of limestone is often performed after removal of the animals for proper development and establishment of regrowth. Together with this practice, the use of picloram in high concentrations for dicotyledonous weeds is common. Therefore, the evaluation of the behavior of this herbicide in these conditions is critical. The objective of this study was to determine the leaching of the picloram, in the soil with different pH and cultivated with Urochloa brizantha (signalgrass) trimmed or not. The experiment was plotted in a subdivided plot with four repetitions, where the plots were constituted by factors pH (5.3 and 6.4) and Urochloa brizantha managements (trimmed and no trimmed). The subplots were composed by depths (0 to 50 cm). The picloram was applied to the top of the columns after 65 days after emergency. A rain of intensity of 60 mm was simulated 12 h after the herbicide application. Picloram concentration was quantified by the high-performance liquid chromatography. Besides that, a control treatment was added without the presence of the signalgrass, for each substrate. The picloram was not detected in the percolated water through the columns. Picloram leached to deeper layers in the soil with pH 6.4, independently of the signalgrass management. The signalgrass reduced the leaching of the picloram, and those no-trimmed demonstrate a higher capacity to retain the herbicide in superficial layers. The liming of the soil increases the pH and reduces the amount of organic matter in the soil, which favors the leaching of picloram to the layer of 30–35 cm. Trimming of Urochloa brizantha reduces the capacity of this forage to reduce the leaching of picloram.

The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in hematological parameters of O. niloticus exposed to sublethal concentrations of the imidacloprid in order to utilize these parameters as biomarkers of exposure. Fish with an average weight of 68.5 ± 2.0 g were exposed to sublethal concentrations of imidacloprid (1.405, 2.810, 14.050, and 28.1 mg L⁻¹) for 7 days. Blood samples were collected by puncture of the tail vein. Blood samples were used to determine the number of erythrocytes, hemoglobin level, hematocrit number, total plasma protein concentration, total and differential leukocytes count, and thrombocytes number. All tested concentrations caused changes in fish leukogram. Concentrations from 14.050 mg L⁻¹ reduced the number of erythrocytes and total plasma proteins. The tilapia exposed to 28.1 mg L⁻¹ had a significant increase in the number of thrombocytes. Although considered slightly toxic to fish, sublethal concentrations of imidacloprid in aquatic environments, even if it does not cause immediate death, may compromise the health and long-term survival of these animals. The sublethal responses adopted for evaluation toxicity in this study were sensitive and adequate to show the extent to which pesticide can affect non-target organisms. This study recommends the use of blood parameters as biomarkers of exposure of fish to pesticides.

This study investigated the soil pollution level and evaluated the phytoremediation potential of 25 native plant species on a former gold mine-tailing site in Ghana. Plant shoots and associated soil samples were collected from a tailing deposition site and analyzed for total element concentration of As, Hg, Pb, and Cu. Soil metal(loid) content, bioaccumulation factor (BAFₛₕₒₒₜₛ), and hyperaccumulator thresholds were also determined to assess the current soil pollution level and phytoextraction potential. The concentration of As and Hg in the soil was above international risk thresholds, while that of Pb and Cu were below those thresholds. None of the investigated plant species reached absolute hyperaccumulator standard concentrations. Bioavailability of sampled metal(loid)s in the soil was generally low due to high pH, organic matter, and clay content. However, for Cu, relatively high bioaccumulation values (BAFₛₕₒₒₜₛ > 1) were found for 12 plant species, indicating the potential for selective heavy-metal extraction via phytoremediation by those plants. The high levels of As at the study site constitute an environmental and health risk but there is the potential for phytoextraction of Cu (e.g., Aspilia africana) and reclamation by afforestation using Leucaena leucocephala and Senna siamea.

The objective of this article is to describe the effect of precipitation and temperature on the drought characteristics of Yunnan province in China. The rainfall and temperature data from 10 national meteorological stations in Yunnan province during 1969 to 2018 were used to investigate the spatial and temporal evolution of drought in Yunnan province and the difference of drought index based on Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) at nearly 50a different time scales. The results showed that Yunnan province had a frequent alternation of drought and flood, and the larger the time scale, the gentler the SPI and SPEI changes. The recent 50a drought mainly occurred in 1980–1982, 1988–1990, 2003–2007, and 2010–2015, and there was continuous drought and the duration was prolonged. The changes of SPI and SPEI showed a downward trend in different seasons. The linear slopes of SPI and SPEI in spring, summer, autumn, and winter were − 0.0064, − 0.0088, − 0.0057 and − 0.0.0111, respectively, and the drought trend was the most serious in winter. Continuous spring drought occurred in 2009–2010 and 2012–2014. The SPEI values in 2009–2010 and 2012–2014 were − 0.80, − 0.64, − 0.75, − 1.23, and − 1.17, respectively. The spatial distribution of drought frequency in Yunnan province was greatly different, and its distribution rule was more in the north and east, less in the south and west. The drought frequency in Zhaotong (northeast Yunnan) was the highest at 36.53%, the drought frequency in Deqin and Lijiang (northwest Yunnan) were 33.11% and 33.28%, and the drought frequency in Kunming (central Yunnan) Lincang, Lancang, and Simao (southwest Yunnan) were 29.35%, 30.73%, 32.77%, and 28.35%, respectively. This study provided a scientific basis for revealing the spatial and temporal variation rules, evolution trends, regional drought, and drought impact assessment and risk management of drought in Yunnan province.

Currently, the urgency of balancing rice production and environmental risk from nitrogen (N) fertilization is gaining scientific and public attention. As such, a field experiment was conducted to investigate the rice yield and the fate of applied-¹⁵N for Yangliangyou 6 (a two-line hybrid cultivar) and Lvdaoq 7 (an inbred cultivar) using 10 combinations of N rates and splitting ratios in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. The results showed that N application primarily affected fertilizer N loss to the environment, followed by plant N absorption, but had little effect on grain yield. Generally, there was no significant increase in grain yield and N accumulation in the aboveground plant when N inputs surpassed 130 or 170 kg ha⁻¹. Fertilizer N residue in soil peaked at approximately 48 kg ha⁻¹ at an N rate of 170 kg ha⁻¹ for both varieties; however, a sharp increase of fertilizer N loss occurred with further incrementally increasing N rates. Although a higher ratio of panicle-N fertilizer together with a lower ratio of tillering-N fertilizer at rates of 130, 170, and 210 kg ha⁻¹ had no grain yield benefit, it promoted aboveground N accumulation and plant N accumulation derived from fertilizer, and it reduced the amount of N residue in soil and N loss to the environment. Overall, reducing tillering-N ratios and increasing panicle-N ratios at an N rate between 130 and 170 kg ha⁻¹ using fertilizer rates of 90–0–40 kg ha⁻¹ and 90–40–40 kg ha⁻¹ N at basal-tillering-panicle initiation stages could reduce the adverse environmental risks of chemical N from rice production without sacrificing rice yield.

A raw illite-smectite mixed-layered clay (RI/S) was ground for preparing nano-sized I/S clay (NI/S) and subsequently amino-functionalized via grafting of 3-aminopropyltrithoxysilane (APTES) (NH₂-RI/S and NH₂-NI/S, respectively). The samples were characterized by particle size analysis, specific surface area measurement, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and ²⁹Si nuclear magnetic resonance (²⁹Si NMR). Compared to RI/S, NI/S has a narrow particle size distribution and appears in a platelet-like morphology due to the disintegration/exfoliation of RI/S after grinding. Based on the ²⁹Si NMR spectra, the appearances of tri-silicate units indicate the chemically grafting of APTES molecules on NH₂-RI/S and NH₂-NI/S, respectively. NH₂-NI/S can adsorb greater amounts of Pb(II) cations and Cr(VI) anions rather than NH₂-RI/S since NH₂-NI/S grafts more amounts of amine groups (-NH₂). The isotherm data for adsorption of Pb(II) cations and Cr(VI) anions can be described by the Langmuir model at different temperatures (i.e., 10 °C, 30 °C, and 50 °C), respectively. The maximum adsorption amounts of Pb(II) cations and Cr(VI) anions onto NH₂-NI/S calculated by the Langmuir isotherm model are 131.23 mg/g and 36.91 mg/g at 50 °C, respectively. The adsorptions of Pb(II) cations and Cr(VI) anions onto NH₂-NI/S involve in the surface complexation of NI/S and amine groups.
