Enzymatic digestion method development for long-term stored chitinaceous planktonic samples

Different extraction methods have been proposed to study the ingestion of microplastics by marine organisms, including enzymatic digestion. While mussels have been the focus of research, crustaceans' enzymatic digestion has received little attention. An overlooked source of information for microplastic research is analysis of long-term time-series biotic samples. These collections are invaluable for the detection and monitoring of changes in ecosystems, especially those caused by anthropogenic factors. Here, crustacean larvae collected in two periods, 1985 and 2020, in the central North Sea were used to develop and optimise an effective and gentle enzymatic digestion method suitable for microplastic research. Sequential breakdown of these chitinaceous samples via a mechanical and surfactant (Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate 1% v/v) pre-treatment, followed by proteinase K (100 mU/mL) and chitinase (50 mU/mL) digestion, efficiently removed >96% of biomass of 1985 and 2020 samples. The optimised method was effective without interfering with the identification of naturally weathered microplastics via FTIR Spectroscopy.

The Dead Sea (DS) sediment samples from two different sites on the west coast were analyzed. The objective is to document sediment characterization in order to study the interrelation existing among ingredients. The analyses show that Fe, Mg and Zn are the most significant trace elements found in the Sediment. Anthropogenic activities such as Industries, untreated sewage, agricultural wastes are some of the pollution sources that are considered to be lethal to the marine ecosystem. The DS is slowly disappearing at an alarming rate of 1 m/year. Hence a constant and precise mitigation, monitoring and management is mandatory. The present work is part of such goal in order to understand the health of the DS ecosystem. A cumulative and consistent effort of the Governments, stakeholders, tourists and the public will help in order to preserve and protect the health of the rare DS marine ecosystem for future generations.

The rise in the use of single-use plastics and personal protective equipment (PPE) has increased plastic waste in the marine environment. In this study, we surveyed the presence of PPE (face masks and gloves) discharged in 6 beaches along the coast of India. A total of 496 PPE were counted with an average density of 1.08 × 10⁻³ PPE m⁻². The PPE density found was comparable to previous studies. Face masks were the most recorded type of PPE (98.39%), with gloves accounting for only 1.61% of the total. However, a significant reduction in the appearance of PPE was recorded on all six beaches, likely due to the increase in vaccination rates. The most contaminated places were the beaches with recreational activities + fishing. It has been noticed that the lack of awareness of environmental pollution and the negligence of the population and the mismanagement of municipal waste are the main causes of beach pollution by PPE. This study confirms the potential threat of PPE to terrestrial and aquatic organisms of multiple taxa in India, but further studies are needed to quantify the impact of this type of waste on marine animals.

The presence of microplastics in the world's oceans and their effects on marine habitats are highly concerning. As suspension-feeders, corals are very exposed to microplastics, compromising the health of coral reef ecosystems. In this study we surveyed for the first time the presence of microplastics in Maldivian reef-building corals. Aiming to determine the influence of exposure and depth on microplastic distribution, analyses were carried out on 38 individuals belonging to three different species. 58% of the investigated colonies resulted contaminated with particles within the 25–150 μm size range. The maximum concentration was encountered in a Pocillopora verrucosa colony sampled from a shallow inner reef (8.9 particles/g of coral). No significant differences in microplastic concentration were observed between different depths, exposures, sites and species. Overall, this study confirmed microplastic presence in coral reefs of the Maldivian archipelago including foundation species.

Given the great importance of Yundang lagoon (China), a detailed evaluation and source identification of multiple potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is required. Low concentrations of the PTEs were found in the Diversion canal, while high in the Main canal, Inner lagoon, and Outer lagoon. Evaluation results indicated that the pollution of PTEs was widespread, and that the extremely high eco-risks and evident toxicity were owing to the great contributions of Hg and Cd. Positive matrix factorization model demonstrated that the PTEs were from both natural and different types of anthropogenic sources. TOC played a critical role in the PTEs. It was also found that the limited environmental carrying capacity and the poor hydrological condition of the lagoon may still accumulate the pollution in a progressive fashion. These findings provide a detailed information on making effective strategies of new directions for long-term prevention of PTEs pollution in the landscape urban lagoon.

This study provides an analysis of the current state of microplastic (MP) contamination along the Mediterranean coastline of Israel. Six strategic sites were monitored in this study – each representing a unique coastal environment. We conclude that Tel Aviv and Hadera, both located near stream estuaries, were highly contaminated (18,777 particles/m³) with MP compared to the other locations. The MP detected included both secondary MP and pristine polymeric pellets. In-depth characterization of the MP illustrated a large percentage of both fragmented and film MP morphologies and the most common MP polymers were polyethylene and polypropylene. Further particle analysis showed that MPs were contaminated with biofilm, including microorganisms such as diatoms, as well as metal residues. Through the spatial analysis presented herein we suggest that local rivers are significant contributors to MP contamination along the Mediterranean Sea coastline of Israel and may pose a direct threat to environment and human health.

Benthic octopuses have been widely documented in artificial shelters for decades, and this use is apparently increasing. Despite any possible positive effects, the use of litter as shelter could have negative implications. In this work, we aimed to elucidate the interactions of octopuses with marine litter, identifying types of interactions and affected species and regions. To achieve this, we obtained 261 underwater images from ‘citizen science’ records, and identified 8 genera and 24 species of benthic octopuses interacting with litter. Glass objects were present in 41.6% of interactions, and plastic in 24.7%. Asia presented the highest number of images, and most records were from 2018 to 2021. Citizen science provided important evidence on octopus/marine litter interactions, highlighting its value and the need for more investigations on the subject. This information is fundamental to help prevent and mitigate the impacts of litter on octopuses, and identify knowledge gaps that require attention.

Recurrent jellyfish blooms and their impacts on ecosystem deliverables of coastal habitats have become a major ecological concern. In view of this, repercussions of a surge in the jellyfish population on the plankton community were studied in Cochin estuary (CE), the largest tropical estuary along the southwest coast of India. Evaluation of hydrographic attributes and plankton community of the CE during early and late pre-monsoon revealed a marked disparity in its hydrography which favoured an increase in jellyfish abundances during late pre-monsoon, eliciting distinct impacts on the plankton community. The escalation in the jellyfish abundance and their subsequent predation on the crustacean plankton released the phytoplankton community from the grazing pressure resulting in a trophic cascade in the planktonic food web. The indiscriminate feeding of jellyfishes on the ichthyoplankton, decapod larvae, and Copepoda, the primary diet component of forage fishes evoked a potent threat to the fishery potential of CE.

Concentrations of 13 phase-partitioned polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in seawater were monitored monthly off Oki Island, Japan, during 2015–2019 to elucidate seasonal variations, main source, and transport pathways of PAHs in the southwestern Sea of Japan. Total PAH (dissolved plus particulate) concentrations in surface seawater at 36°09.0′N, 133°17.3′E (site OK) were in the range 0.49–9.36 ng L⁻¹ (mean 2.77, SD 2.05 ng L⁻¹) with higher levels in summer–autumn, an order of magnitude lower than those in the East China Sea during 2005 and 2009–2011 and about one-third of those recorded in the Sea of Japan in 2008 and 2010. The main sources of dissolved and particulate PAHs were combustion products. Increasing dissolved PAH levels during July–October indicate that the area around southern Oki Island is impacted by PAH-rich summer continental-shelf water transported by the Tsushima Warm Current flowing from the East China Sea.

Sustainable management of groundwater needs comprehensive study on water quality in present scenario. Hence, an understanding on the hydro geochemistry, saltwater intrusion, spatiotemporal-seasonal variations and irrigational suitability of groundwater becomes a must, especially in coastal regions. Our study area is one such place where all the parameters play a major role against sustainable management. The study pointed out that majority of the samples is brackish with two notable geochemical facies for pre monsoon and post monsoon. Factor and cluster analyses revealed that EC, TDS, Na⁺, Cl⁻, Mg²⁺ and Ca²⁺ are the major contributors. Gibb's diagram supported the dominance of rock weathering and evaporation in controlling the groundwater chemistry. Sea water intrusion was mapped using HFE diagrams and the Irrigational suitability is studied using USSL, SAR, %Na, etc. The data and results from this study might provide crucial information to water management authorities in dealing groundwater scarcity and pollution problems.
