The question of how to efficiently and effectively manage ocean resources in a sustainable way has reached the forefront of discussion at an international level, but women's contributions to this process have been underestimated or unrecognized. Inclusive management plays a major role in the effective creation, use and adoption of environmental governance, necessitating efforts to measure, monitor and advance inclusivity. In many Pacific island states, there is a lack of disaggregated data collection and management to assist reliable and liable gender-responsive decision-making by national and regional authorities. This lack of information leads to unquantified female contributions and unexplored potential for women to actively contribute to sustainable ocean management as traditional leaders, researchers or science-based managers and in accordance with traditional customs, cultures and processes. This paper examines the contribution of gender-disaggregated data in both (1) effective management of natural resources and (2) measurement and monitoring of the active involvement of women in ocean management. We seek to shift the question from simply “(How) are oceans used by women?” to “How can we build a clear path towards inclusive oceans management using science?”, drawing data mainly from gender and ocean management practices in Pacific Small Island Developing States. This work also seeks to ground in reality the increasing national and international evocations about social equity and avoidance of gender discrimination. Given the existing relationships of Pacific peoples with the ocean and the emerging status of ocean science-based governance, wider integration of science and women in marine management can make an interesting and positive impact in this region.

In vitro methods have gained rising importance in ecotoxicology due to ethical concerns. The aim of this study was to assess the single and combined in vitro effects of gold, as nanoparticle (AuNPs) and ionic (Au⁺) form, and the pharmaceutical gemfibrozil (GEM). Sparus aurata liver organ culture was exposed to gold (4 to 7200 μg·L⁻¹), GEM (1.5 to 15,000 μg·L⁻¹) and combination 80 μg·L⁻¹ gold +150 μg·L⁻¹ GEM for 24 h. Endpoints related with antioxidant status, peroxidative/genetic damage were assessed. AuNPs caused more effects than Au⁺, increasing catalase and glutathione reductase activities and damaging DNA and cellular membranes. Effects were dependent on AuNPs size, coating and concentration. GEM damaged DNA at an environmentally relevant concentration, 1.5 μg·L⁻¹. Overall, the effects of the combined exposures were higher than the predicted, based on single exposures. This study showed that liver culture can be a useful model to study contaminants effects.

Measurements of underwater noise radiated under ship normal operations are presented. The acoustic data, from the cabled ocean observatory, are analyzed under each identified ship passage, which was obtained by the Automatic Identification System. Under each passage, sound pressure level is calculated to observe local noise variations due to shipping noise. This paper emphasizes the study of noise variations at the observatory, presents the noise measurements under identified ship passages in the last several years, and provides references for predictive models of underwater noise pollution from commercial ship traffic. From the passages of one ship to the passages of 26 ships, the measurements reveal similar variation patterns when the ships traveled at similar courses, but different patterns when they traveled at different courses. When evaluating the noise variations due to ship traffics, it is important to consider the shipping noise propagation as well as ship movement.

In this study we assessed the effects of the recurrent disposal of dredged material from the Guadalquivir estuary (south-western Spain) in a marine disposal area. We analysed shifts in sediment characteristics as well as bioaccumulation and biomagnification of heavy metals through the benthic food web. Results showed that the significant increase in concentration of some heavy metals observed in the marine disposal area after the latest disposal event could be attributed to the deposition of river-dredged sediments. This increase could also explain the decreased amphipod survival in the ecotoxicology analysis. Heavy metal concentrations in organisms indicated some bioaccumulation in deposit feeders and predators but with no clear patterns nor biomagnification through the food web. Hence, combining studies that monitor shifts in sediment characteristics and their possible consequences for the food web seems to be an interesting approach that should be assessed further in this type of studies.

Oil pollution resulting from natural and anthropogenic activities in the Arabian Gulf as well as oil residue in the form of tarmat (TM) deposited on the coast is a major environmental concern. The spatial distribution, chemical composition and weathering pattern of tarmat along the west coast of Qatar has been assessed based on the TM samples collected from 12 coastal regions. The range of TM distribution is 0–104 g m⁻¹ with an average value of 9.25 g m⁻¹. Though the current TM level is thirty-fold lesser than that was found during 1993–1997 (average 290 g m⁻¹), the distribution pattern is similar. The results of ATR-FTIR spectroscopy indicate that aromatic compounds are higher in the north (N) coast TMs than those found in the northwest (NW) and southwest (SW) coasts, and Carbonyl Index values indicate that TM of NW coast is highly weathered compared to those found in the N and SW coasts.

The increasing quantity of plastic waste in the ocean is providing a growing and more widespread novel habitat for microbes. Plastics have taxonomically distinct microbial communities (termed the ‘Plastisphere’) and can raft these unique communities over great distances. In order to understand the Plastisphere properly it will be important to work out how major ocean changes (such as warming, acidification and deoxygenation) are shaping microbial communities on waste plastics in marine environments. Here, we show that common plastic drinking bottles rapidly become colonised by novel biofilm-forming bacterial communities, and that ocean acidification greatly influences the composition of plastic biofilm assemblages. We highlight the potential implications of this community shift in a coastal community exposed to enriched CO₂ conditions.

To investigate the sediment quality of Fudu Estuary waters in East Liaodong Bay, the grain size, concentrations of total organic carbon (TOC) and heavy metal (Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb) of 25 surface sediments were tested. The concentration of heavy metals was found to be higher in the Southwest of Yingkou Port and outside the Fudu Estuary. Cd is the principal contaminant with mild pollutant and moderate ecological risk. Cr may cause negative biological effects. The abnormal enrichment of Cu and TOC may respectively be caused by riverside industrial activities and mariculture. The abnormal enrichment of Pb in Moon Bay Beach and the Lagoon was suggested to be caused by the mooring of boats or excessive tourist activities. Grain size dominates the concentrations of heavy metals in the study area. The impact of coastal engineering on sediment quality through changing sedimentary dynamics should also be given particular attention.

Marine noise pollution (MNP) can cause a multitude of impacts on many organisms, but information is often scattered and general outcomes difficult to assess. We have reviewed the literature on MNP impacts on Mediterranean fish and invertebrates. Both chronic and acute MNP produced by various human activities - e.g. maritime traffic, pile driving, air guns - were found to cause detectable effects on intra-specific communication, vital processes, physiology, behavioral patterns, health status and survival. These effects on individuals can extend to inducing population- and ecosystem-wide alterations, especially when MNP impacts functionally important species, such as keystone predators and habitat forming species. Curbing the threats of MNP in the Mediterranean Sea is a challenging task, but a variety of measures could be adopted to mitigate MNP impacts. Successful measures will require more accurate information on impacts and that effective management of MNP really becomes a priority in the policy makers' agenda.

The abundance of radionuclides in the Arctic Actiniaria has limited study despite their environmental importance in coastal food chains. Although the Arctic has incurred relatively little contamination by anthropogenic radionuclides as a result of nuclear weapons tests, there are still detectable levels of radionuclide activity observed in marine species. In this study of anthropogenic radionuclide activity in Actiniaria from Spitsbergen we observed levels of ⁹⁰Sr from 0.92 Bq kg⁻¹dw to 18 Bq kg⁻¹dw and for ¹³⁷Cs from 1.2 Bq kg⁻¹dw to 12 Bq kg⁻¹dw. The highest values of ⁹⁰Sr and ¹³⁷Cs were observed in organisms at stations close to seabird colonies and a river mouth, suggesting that fecal material and melting glaciers may be sources of radionuclides in the Arctic environment. The body mass of individual organisms affected bioaccumulation of ⁹⁰Sr and ¹³⁷Cs in Actiniaria, with radionuclide bioaccumulation occurring most intensively in the smaller specimens.

Microplastics are a group of ubiquitous persistent pollutants that have rapidly attracted much attention from the scientific community as well as the general public due to the growing awareness of the environmental risks they pose. However, due to limitations and variations in sampling, analytical measurement methods, and the different units used for reporting data, reliable comparisons between studies in the Gulf region and internationally are not straightforward. This study proposes standardized protocols for marine sediment, seawater, marine biota and aerosol (1) sampling, (2) sample processing, (3) sample identification and (4) reporting units to be used. An attempt has been made to highlight the limitations of the widely employed strategies for sampling microplastics in seawater, where a large portion of the microplastics is not sampled due to the mesh sizes used. The issues with the processing of biota samples and aerosols are likewise addressed, and recommendations are also made for standardization of units for reporting microplastic quantification. Protocols for collection of bottom sediments and aerosols are also proposed. These are the environmental matrixes for which there are no harmonized protocols in the Gulf region; hence if a standardized approach is adopted, it will enable and improve comparisons between the studies within this region and can be useful for similar studies in other marine areas as well.
