Virus detection in drinking water is very important to protect human health. The different methodologies for analysing human pathogenic virus are very time consuming and expensive, so until now only a few specialised laboratories carried out this analysis. Detection of bacteriophages may be possible by examining the aquatic virus, with advantages of easy and cheap. The bacteriophages ofBacteroides fragilis have been proven as specifically present in human faeces and have relationships with water contaminated by enterovirus. Our study, for the first time in France, discovered theB. fragilis phages present in sample of sewage, Seine river and raw water for water supply. Our results also presented thatB. fragilis phages may be a better indicator for water bacteriology compared with classical bacteriological indicators in water treatment. On the other hand, our results demonstrated that MPN method (Most Probable Number) has more advantages than that of PFU (Plaque Forming Units).

Combined effects of organic or inorganic pollutants on soil microbial activities were investigated in field plots grown with four types of covering plants. It was derived from this study that combined effects were dependent not only on the type and dose of pollutants, addition of soda lime, plant type and season variation, but also on test parameters. When jointly added, higher doses of Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn and As caused significant inhibition. Addition of soda lime could even enhance inhibition. Joint effects of phenanthrene, MET (active ingredient: paclobutrazol) and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene were not significant, and may be covered by other biotic or abiotic factors. Compared with other two parameters (respiration and microbial biomass), dehydrogenase activity appeared to be more sensitive for evaluating the toxicity of anthropogenic pollutants in soil. Soil samples collected in summer often had higher microbial activities than those in fall. The microbial activity in soil decreased with covering vegetation in the order alfalfa > pine > poplar and maize, albeit some exceptions were observed.

A study was carried out recently to determine the pollution level of waters in the Karachi harbour and adjoining backwaters. Nine locations were selected, four in the backwaters, two on the seaside, and three in the main navigable channel. Four of these locations were deliberately selected to coincide with those of a previous study conducted in 1982 by Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) so that the values for the concentration of different pollutants could be compared. Analysis was conducted for pH, bicarbonates, Total Solids, Volatile matter in Total Solids, Chlorides, Sulphates, Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium and Potassium.The results indicate that the composition of sea water as far as the concentration of above constituents is concerned has not changed much since the time of the PCSIR study, viz 1982, except that the organic matter concentration has increased. The reasons for this increase in organic loading and its possible impact are discussed in this paper.

A greenhouse experiment using soil was conducted to investigate the effects of the addition of different forms of either nickel or lead, together with an acidifying agent, on the distribution of Ni, Pb, Zn, Cu and Mn in wheat plants, and on the post-harvest extractability of these elements in the soil. Two treatments consisting of soil alone or soil mixed with sewage sludge at a rate of 200 Mg ha⁻¹ were used as controls. Nickel (400 mg kg⁻¹) or lead (1600 mg kg⁻¹) was added to the soil as an inorganic salt or mixed previously with sewage sludge. Six further treatments including an acidifying agent (wastewater from olive oil processing: alpechin) were also prepared. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L. var. Mesa) plants were harvested 75 d after germination. Dry matter yield of wheat was increased by the addition of sewage sludge. No reductions in yield were observed after the addition of nickel or lead. Nickel concentration and uptake by wheat, and extractability from soil, were higher when the sewage sludge enriched in nickel was added to soil. This effect was enhanced when the acidifying agent was also added. In contrast, lead availability was higher after the addition of inorganic Pb to soil. The addition of both forms of Ni enhanced Zn, Cu and Mn uptake by the plant, whereas the addition of lead increased Zn and Cu. After harvesting, increases in extractable Zn and Cu in the soil were observed only in treatments with sewage sludge, and not after the addition of Ni or Pb, or after the addition of the acidifying agent. Decreasing the pH of the soil with the acidifying agent tended to increase Mn uptake by wheat, and Mn extractability from the soil after harvesting.

Allium test has already been used to determine cytotoxicity of waste drilling fluids. In the present work the cytotoxicity of four pure chemicals (Defoamex, Idthin 400, Magco Thin and Slick Pipe) was investigated. Those chemicals are components of drilling fluids, therefore, they are usually constituents of oil and gas industry waste waters. The tested chemicals were prepared in 1:9 dilution and cytotoxic effects on root-tip meristem ofAllium ascalonicum were analysed after 24-, 48- and 72-hour-treatments. All samples showed cytotoxicity which was proved by cytogenetic parameters such as inhibition of mitotic activity and increase of mitotic abnormalities and chromosomal aberrations in comparison with the control. Almost all mitotic abnormalities induced by four chemicals tested were the result of disturbed spindle mechanisms accompanied with stickiness. Slick Pipe revealed the most prominent mitodepressive effect and induced a high number of abnormalities. It caused a significant decrease of mitotic activity and increase of mitotic abnormalities after all three treatment durations, while chemicals Defoamex and Magco Thin showed a significant decrease of mitotic activity only after 72-hour-treatment. Chemicals Defoamex, Idthin 400 and Magco Thin revealed a significant increase of mitotic abnormalities after 48- and 72-hour-treatments.

The effectiveness of ammonia stripping at different air flow rates (0, 1 and 5 L min⁻¹) and lime dosages (0 and 10 000 mg L⁻¹ calcium hydroxide) was investigated in aeration tanks in a laboratory as a pretreatment to remove ammoniacal-nitrogen and organic load (COD) in landfill leachate. Ammoniacal-nitrogen removal at 20 °C after one day was 70% for 0 L min⁻¹, 81% for 1 L min⁻¹ and 90% for 5 L min⁻¹ regardless of the origin of leachate. Ammonia loss was mainly due to desorption through water surface. The levels of phosphorus and COD were only reduced by lime precipitation, with 85% and 93% phosphorus removal and 24% and 47% COD removed for leachate from the Junk Bay Landfill (JB) and Gin Drinkers' Bay Landfill (GDB) respectively. The highly significant difference (P<0.05) of COD removal between JB and GDB might be due to the different age of the two landfills studied. Leachate quality and configuration of the treatment reactor were important factors affecting the efficiency of ammonia removal by stripping processes.

The Pb content in orchard soils at Mission Peninsula, Michigan was determined to assess the impact of historical lead arsenate applications. Soil samples at 72 sites located in five orchards were collected at depths of 2−, 20-, 50−, and 100 cm. Atomic absorption spectroscopy was used to quantify Pb levels (jig g⁻¹). Mean surface Pb levels at individual orchards ranged from <1–136 pg g⁻¹ and rapidly decreased with depth, to < 1-5 μg g⁻¹ at 100 cm. The impact of textural class and slope angle on Pb levels was also analyzed. Correlation coefficients linking Pb levels with textural class were weak, ranging from 0.21 to −0.07. Varying slope steepness and slope position within orchards failed to affect the spatial pattern of soil Pb.Soil Pb levels were also compared at 5 sites along local roads with varying levels of automobile traffic. Samples were collected 1 m from the roadside at the same depth intervals studied in orchards. Average daily traffic along the busiest roadsites ranged from 8200 to 16 000; these sites had Pb levels of 90–210 μg g⁻¹. Such locales had Pb levels similar to the more intensively sprayed orchards.

A study on the factors influencing nitrogen removal in waste water stabilization ponds was undertaken in an eight-pond series in Werribee, Australia. Nitrogen species including Kjeldahl nitrogen, total ammonia nitrogen, nitrite and nitrate were monitored monthly from March 1993 to January 1994. At the same time, pH, temperature, chlorophylla content and dissolved oxygen were also recorded. Highest nitrogen removal occurred during the period with highest levels of chlorophylla content and dissolved oxygen, but the rate of nitrogen removal was not related to temperature and pH. Enhanced photosynthetic activities resulting from an increased phytoplankton abundance due to prolonged detention time caused an increase in dissolved oxygen, and created an optimum condition for nitrification to occur. In this process, ammonia was oxidized to nitrite and nitrate which were subsequently reduced to elemental nitrogen. Apart from nitrification-denitrification which was the major nitrogen removal pathway in the study system, algal uptake of ammonium, nitrate and nitrite as nutrient sources also contributed to the nitrogen removal. The role of phytoplankton and zooplankton in the treatment process in waste stabilization ponds was discussed.
