Rapid detection of trace malachite green using a fluorescence probe based on signal amplification through electrostatic self-assembly of CdTe QDs and polystyrene microsphere
2020
Yang, Ji | Lin, Zheng-Zhong | Huang, Zhi-Yong
A fluorescence probe was delicately designed for the detection of malachite green (MG) in water and fish samples. Through the electrostatic self-assembly of CdTe QDs on the surface of polystyrene (PS) microspheres, the fluorescence signal was amplified. After grafting molecularly imprinted film, the fluorescence probe of MIP@PS@CdTe was fabricated and applied to the detection of MG based on fluorescence quenching. The linear range of MG detection was 0.01–20 μmol L⁻¹, and the detection limit was 4.7 nmol L⁻¹ (3σ, n = 9) which was much lower than those of the previous reports. The recoveries of MG in aquaculture water and fish samples ranging from 87.6% to 105.4% illustrated that the detection by MIP@PS@CdTe probe was accurate and reliable.

Dokdo's high marine biodiversity has received worldwide attention recently. A total of 578 macrozoobenthos are recorded since the 1960s, but ecology of Dokdo's fauna is unknown. We monitored Dokdo's subtidal macrozoobenthos for 5 years in 2013–17, in the present study. Five stations representing three subtidal habitats were monitored; 1) oceanic plateau, 2) coastal terrace, and 3) island wharf. In total, 13,664 individuals belonging to 141 taxa were recorded during the survey. The number of species and density varied greatly among stations without distinct year-round variation. Faunal compositions significantly differed in time and space, reflecting varied faunal adaptations in a harsh environment. Whilst, temporal stability in faunal assemblages was evidenced for some dominant or cosmopolitan taxa. High spatial heterogeneity reflects site-specific oceanographic conditions. Meantime, sea-surface temperature and wave action were associated with year-round faunal compositions. Overall, the Dokdo's macrozoobenthos significantly contribute to marine biodiversity of the East Sea.

Strongylocentrotus intermedius cultured in the northern Yellow Sea in China was utilized to evaluate the effects of chronic CO₂-driven ocean acidification (OA) on adult sea urchins. Based on the projection of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), present natural seawater conditions (pHNBS = 8.10 ± 0.03) and three laboratory-controlled OA conditions (OA₁, ΔpHNBS = − 0.3 units; OA₂, ΔpHNBS = − 0.4 units; OA₃, ΔpHNBS = − 0.5 units) were employed. After 60-day incubation, our results showed that (1) OA significantly repressed the growth of adult S. intermedius; (2) food consumption tended to be decreased with pH decline; (3) intestinal morphology was changed, and activities of intestinal cellulase and lipase were decreased under acidified conditions; (4) expression levels of two immune-related genes (SiTNF14 and SiTGF-β) were altered; (5) rate-limiting enzyme activities of the glycolytic pathway and tricarboxylic acid cycle (TAC) were changed in all OA treatments compared to those of controls.

2020
Kühn, Susanne | van Franeker, Jan Andries
This review quantifies plastic interaction in marine biota. Firstly, entanglement and ingestion records for all marine birds, mammals, turtles, fish, and invertebrate species, are summarized from 747 studies. Marine debris affected 914 species through entanglement and/or ingestion. Ingestion was recorded for 701 species, entanglement was documented for 354 species. Secondly, the frequency of occurrence of ingestion per species (Sp-%FO) was extracted for marine birds, mammals and turtles. Thirdly, for seabird species, average numbers of plastics ingested per individual were determined. Highest Sp-%FO and average number of plastics were found in tubenosed seabirds with 41% of all birds analysed having plastics, on average 9.9 particles per bird. The Sp-%FO and average number of ingested particles is lower for most other species. However, for certain species, ingestion rates of litter are reason for serious concern. Standardized methods are crucial for future studies, to generate datasets that allow higher level ecosystem analyses.

2020
Pennino, Maria Grazia | Bachiller, Eneko | Lloret-Lloret, Elena | Albo-Puigserver, Marta | Esteban Drake, Antonio | Jadaud, Angélique | Bellido, José María | Coll, Marta
We quantified the incidence of microplastics in the gut contents of the European sardine (Sardina pilchardus) and anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea and tested which variables influence this abundance, including the prevalence of parasites (i.e., trematoda larvae and nematodes). We detected a 58% occurrence of microplastics ingestion in sardines and a 60% in anchovies. With respect to sardines, the individuals with lower body conditions were found to have the highest microplastics ingestion probabilities, whereas in anchovies such probabilities were observed in individuals with higher gonadosomatic indices and smaller size. The areas with the highest microplastics ingestion probabilities were the Gulf of Alicante for sardines and the Gulf of Lion - Ebro Delta for anchovies. Both species showed a positive relationship between parasites and microplastics ingestion. These results highlight that both parasitism and ingestion of microplastics are concerns for the health of marine stocks and human consumers.

2020
Moradi, Masoud | Moradi, Nooshin
Monthly mean satellite derived Chl-a, aerosols, wind, SST, PAR, and turbidity datasets were used to investigate the possible factors regulating phytoplankton variability in the Persian Gulf. The spatial correlation analysis revealed two distinct regions of SST and PAR, and a relatively uniform spatial correlation pattern of the other parameters. The cross correlation between aeolian dusts and Chl-a was significantly positive with 1–3 months offset. The pattern of spatial correlation between Chl-a and SST was positive in the shallow regions without time lag, and was negative with time offset of 3–5 months in deeper regions. The cross correlation between Chl-a and north-ward winds were positive with time lags of 1–3 months. Vertical mixing under the influence of north-ward winds in the deeper region, availability of light and nutrients in the shallow regions, and dust fertilizations over the whole area were suggested to be the major controlling factors regulating phytoplankton growth.

2020
Consoli, Pierpaolo | Sinopoli, Mauro | Deidun, Alan | Canese, Simonepietro | Berti, Claudio | Andaloro, Franco | Romeo, Teresa
The aim of this research was to assess marine litter abundance and its effects on the benthic fauna in an area of the central Mediterranean Sea exploited by fisheries using fish aggregating devices (FAD). The study was carried out by means of a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV). Derelict fishing gear, mainly FAD ropes, represented the main source of marine debris, contributing 96.2% to the overall litter. About 47% of debris items (mostly FAD ropes) entangled colonies of the protected black coral Leiopathes glaberrima. The results of this research will assist in the monitoring of “impact/harm” to the coral and other benthic communities, as recommended by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and by the Integrated Monitoring and Assessment Programme. Preventive and mitigation measures (i.e., biodegradable fishing gear, onboard technology to locate and retrieve gear, reception and/or payment for old/retrieved gear, and introduction of no-take zones) to reduce the problem are discussed.

This study assesses microplastic ingestion in Boops boops at different geographical areas in the Mediterranean Sea. A total of 884 fish were caught at 20 coastal sites in Spain, France, Italy and Greece and analyzed using a common methodological protocol. Microplastics were found in 46.8% of the sampled fish, with an average number of items per individual of 1.17 ± 0.07. Filaments were the predominant shape type, while polyethylene and polypropylene were indicated by FTIR as the most common polymer types of ingested microplastics. The frequency of occurrence, as well as the abundance and proportion of types (size, shape, color and polymer) of ingested microplastics, varied among geographical areas. The spatial heterogeneity of the abundance of ingested microplastics was mainly related to the degree of coastal anthropogenic pressure at the sampling sites. Our findings further support the suitability of B. boops as bioindicator of microplastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea.

2020
Harris, Peter T.
A review of 80 papers on microplastic (MP) particles in marine sediments was conducted for different sedimentary environments. The papers were assessed for data on average MP concentration, MP morphotype (fibres, fragments, films, etc.), MP particle size distribution, sediment accumulation rates and correlations with total organic carbon (TOC) and sediment grain size. The median concentration of MP particles is highest in fjords at 7000 particles kg⁻¹ dry sediment (DS) followed by 300 in estuarine environments, 200 in beaches, 200 in shallow coastal environments, 50 on continental shelves and 80 particles kg⁻¹ DS for deep sea environments. Fibres are the dominant MP type and account for 90% of MP on beaches (median value) and 49% of particles in tide-dominated estuaries. In order to advance our understanding of the fate of MP in the ocean, quantitative assessments are needed of MP flux rates (g m⁻² year⁻¹) in a range of sedimentary environments.

The metal detoxification mechanism is essential for the accumulation activity of some polychaetes. In order to investigate the detoxification function of metalloprotein II in polychaete Perinereis aibuhitensis, a recombinant fusion protein of MP II was successfully expressed in vitro and an anti-MP II polyclonal antibody was got. The tissue distribution of MP II in P. aibuhitensis and the protein expression under Cd, Pb and Zn exposure were detected by ELISA with this antibody. The results showed that MP II was higher in the intestine of P. aibuhitensis, followed by the body wall and parapodium. Cd, Zn and Pb exposure can induced MP II expression, but the change trend of MP II under various heavy metal exposure was different. The amount of MP II induced in P. aibuhitensis increased with the rises of Cd concentration, but there is no significant relationship between Zn and Pb concentration and MP II level.
