Microfiber release from different fabrics during washing Полный текст

Microfiber is a subgroup of microplastics and accounts for a large proportion of microplastics in aquatic environment, especially in municipal effluents. The purpose of the present study was to quantify microfiber shedding from three most populate synthetic textile fabrics: polyester, polyamide, and acetate fabrics. The results showed that more microfibers were released after washing with a pulsator laundry machine than a platen laundry machine. The greatest number of microfibers was released from acetate fabric, which was up to 74,816 ± 10,656 microfibers/m2 per wash, although microfibers were shed from all materials. Moreover, an increasing trend was found in the number of microfibers shedding from synthetic fabrics with the washing temperature increasing, and greater microfiber release occurred when washing fabrics with detergent rather than with water alone. The lint filter bag equipped with the pulsator laundry machine retained the longer microfibers (>1000 μm), but not the shorter microfibers (<500 μm) instead of releasing into the drainage system. Our data suggested that microfibers released during washing of synthetic fabrics may be an important source of microfibers in aquatic environment due to the increasing production and use of synthetic fabrics globally. Thus, more efficient filtering bags or other technologies in household washing machines should be developed to prevent and reduce the release of microfibers from domestic washing.

Mobile colloids such as nanoparticles (NPs) are often considered to affect the fate and transport of various contaminants by serving as carriers. Many studies have focused on the effect of engineered NPs on contaminant transport. To date, very little information is available on the co-transport of natural soil NPs with typical organic contaminants. This study investigated the co-transport of phenanthrene (PHE) and pentachlorophenol (PCP) by three soil NPs through saturated sand columns. Soil NPs with high organic matter and particle concentration were the most effective in transporting PHE through columns. In addition, soil NPs significantly increased the transport of low-level PHE (0.2 mg L−1) but there was no obvious increase at 1.0 mg L−1 PHE. This is attributed to a higher ratio of NP-associated PHE to total PHE at a low-level than at a high-level during transport. In contrast to PHE, the chemical speciation of PCP determined its mobility, which was highly dependent on solution pH. At pH 6.5, anionic PCP became dominant and soluble in the effluent. This could account for the negligible effect of soil NPs on PCP mobility. At pH 4.0, however, neutral molecular PCP dominated and, as expected, decreased mobility of PCP occurred. Soil NPs considerably enhanced the transport of neutral PCP in NP-associated forms compared to controls, due to the high hydrophobicity and sorption affinity of PCP to NPs. The mobility of soil NPs was little affected by PHE and PCP under tested conditions. This study indicated that highly mobile soil NPs may be effective carriers for organic contaminants and give a new direction to polluted site remediation by using a natural material, e.g., soil.

The widespread use of neonicotinoid insecticides is controversial due to their persistence in the environment and concerns the long-term consequences of their use. We present a simple, low-cost method for the sensitive and efficient extraction of three important neonicotinoids from soil with a detection limit <1 ng g−1 wet soil. We have validated this method by applying it to uncontaminated soil samples spiked with thiamethoxam, clothianidin and imidacloprid at environmentally concentrations. Absolute recoveries were >80% for thiamethoxam, clothianidin and imidacloprid. We also applied the method to soil samples collected from maize fields in New Zealand's North Island and found imidacloprid in 43 out of 45 samples and clothianidin in every one. Mean imidacloprid concentrations varied from 0.5 to 9.4 ng g−1 (wet weight) and clothianidin from 2.1 to 26.7 ng g−1 (wet weight). Imidacloprid concentrations exceed the New Zealand Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Exposure Limit of 1 ng g−1 (dry weight) at eight of the nine sites sampled. These results are also remarkable because we have detected multiple neonicotinoid residues at every site. Imidacloprid residues appear to persist at significant concentrations at five of our sites from an application at least two years previous. This is only the third study to report the presence of neonicotinoid residues in NZ's environment and the first to show that those residues are persistent in the environment at nominally hazardous concentrations.

Alpha-cypermethrin (Alpha-CP), an important pyrethroid pesticide, has been widely used for pest control in agriculture and parasite control in livestock farms. Thus, alpha-CP is easily exposed to wild birds and poultry, which may pose a potential risk to birds. Alpha-CP and its metabolites have been detected in many environmental samples, including poultry and wild birds. We studied the distribution and metabolism of alpha-CP and its metabolites in embryo development and newborn chick. The results showed that metabolites were the main residual forms of alpha-CP in different stages of life and might increase the exposure risk of bird and its offspring. Metabolomics investigation of newborn chick exhibited that the metabolic profiles of chicks were disturbed, especially lipid metabolism. The concentrations of cis-DCCA and trans-DCCA were high in the first and second weeks of chick growth, indicating that chicks have limited ability to further metabolize and excrete cis-DCCA and trans-DCCA during the early stages of chicks. Toxicokinetics of alpha-CP in adult hens showed that alpha-CP was rapidly metabolized to acid metabolites, which could be further metabolized and excreted. The results about metabolism of alpha-CP in different stages of chicken indicate that the ability of the embryo and early chick to metabolize alpha-CP and its metabolites was the weakest. Therefore, it is of important significance to focus on evaluating the ecological risk of cypermethrin on birds at different stages of life cycle.

Di(n-butyl) phthalate (DBP) is extensively used in industrial applications as plasticizer and stabilizer and its presence in the environment may present health risks for human. Previous studies have demonstrated its mutagenic, teratogenic, and carcinogenic ability. However, its effect on mammalian oocyte maturation remains unknown. In this study, we examined the effect of DBP on oocyte maturation both in vitro and in vivo. Our results showed that DBP could significantly reduce mice oocyte germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) and polar body extrusion (PBE) rates. In addition, oocyte cytoskeleton was damaged and cortical granule-free domains (CGFDs) were also disrupted. Finally, DBP induced early apoptosis of oocyte and granulosa cells (GCs). Collectively, these data demonstrate that DBP could reduce meiosis competence and mouse oocyte development.

The micronucleus (MN) test of the human buccal mucosa was developed more than 30 years ago, although this technique has only recently been applied to wild mammals. This paper presents a pioneering study in the genotoxicological evaluation of the exfoliated cells of the buccal mucosa of bats. The assay was applied to two insectivorous bat species (Noctilio albiventris and Pteronotus parnellii) sampled in riparian corridors located in the city of Palmas (capital of the Brazilian state of Tocantins), with the results being compared with those obtained for a third insectivorous species (Nyctinomops laticaudatus), which has established a colony under a road bridge in the same region. This colony represents one of the largest molossidae populations ever recorded in Brazil. A significantly higher frequency of micronuclei was recorded in this colony, as well as a number of other nuclear abnormalities, including binucleated cells, cells with condensed chromatin and karyolysis, in comparison with the bats from the riparian corridors, indicating that the bats from the bridge colony are more susceptible to genotoxic damage. Thus, it is demonstrated the importance of the biomarker (MN) for use in wild animals and allows to conclude that colony bats are more susceptible to genotoxic damages.

Plastic pollution in the marine environment poses threats to wildlife and habitats through varied mechanisms, among which are the transport and transfer to the food web of hazardous substances. Still, very little is known about the metal content of plastic debris and about sorption/desorption processes, especially with respect to weathering. In this study, plastic debris collected from the North Atlantic subtropical gyre was analyzed for trace metals; as a comparison, new packaging materials were also analyzed. Both the new items and plastic debris showed very scattered concentrations. The new items contained significant amounts of trace metals introduced as additives, but globally, metal concentrations were higher in the plastic debris. The results provide evidence that enhanced metal concentrations increase with the plastic state of oxidation for some elements, such as As, Ti, Ni, and Cd. Transmission electron microscopy showed the presence of mineral particles on the surface of the plastic debris. This work demonstrates that marine plastic debris carries complex mixtures of heavy metals. Such materials not only behave as a source of metals resulting from intrinsic plastic additives but also are able to concentrate metals from ocean water as mineral nanoparticles or adsorbed species.

Microcystis aeruginosa is one of the main species of cyanobacteria that causes water blooms. M. aeruginosa can release into the water several types of microcystins (MCs), which are harmful to aquatic organisms and even humans. However, few studies have investigated the hepatotoxicity of M. aeruginosa itself in zebrafish in environments that simulate natural aquatic systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the hepatotoxicity of M. aeruginosa in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) after short-term (96 h) exposure and to elucidate the potential underlying mechanisms. Distinct histological changes in the liver, such as enlargement of the peripheral nuclei and sinusoids and the appearance of fibroblasts, were observed in zebrafish grown in M. aeruginosa culture. In addition, antioxidant enzyme activity was activated and protein phosphatase (PP) activity was significantly decreased with increasing microalgal density. A proteomic analysis revealed alterations in a number of protein pathways, including ribosome translation, immune response, energy metabolism and oxidative phosphorylation pathways. Western blot and real-time PCR analyses confirmed the results of the proteomic analysis. All results indicated that M. aeruginosa could disrupt hepatic functions in adult zebrafish, thus highlighting the necessity of ecotoxicity assessments for M. aeruginosa at environmentally relevant densities.

The occurrence and distribution of 168 pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in the surface seawater of Jiaozhou Bay (JZB) were investigated using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography in tandem with a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer equipped with an electrospray ionization source (UHPLC-ESI-MS-MS). Thirty-six compounds were detected, and 17 of these compounds were first detected in seawater, including sulfabenzamide, sulphacetamide, cephalonium, desacetyl-cefotaxime, cefminox, cefotaxime, cephradine, cefazolin, carprofen, nabumetone, glibenclamide, glimepiride, glipizide, prednisone, fluoromethalone, diazepam and amantadine. The total concentration of PhACs in the surface seawater ranged from 23.6 ng/L to 217 ng/L. The compounds found at the highest mean concentrations included amantadine (24.7 ng/L), lincomycin (8.55 ng/L), carprofen (8.30 ng/L), and tetracycline (7.48 ng/L). The PhAC concentration was higher in the inner bay than in the outside of the bay. In the inner bay, the eastern district showed higher concentrations of PhACs than the western district. Input from the Licun River may be the primary source of pollution. A statistically significant positive correlation was observed between nutrients and PhACs in seawater. Phosphate can be used to indicate the distribution of PhACs in JZB. Based on the individual risk quotient (RQ) values, lincomycin and ofloxacin posed high risks to the relevant aquatic organisms in JZB, especially in the eastern parts. Regular monitoring is required to evaluate the levels of PhACs as they are constantly released into JZB.

Knowledge of the transport and fate of pathogenic Escherichia coli, especially in the areas contaminated with crude oil, is required to assess contamination of shallow groundwater resources. The present study aims to investigate the effect of crude oil-mediated water repellency on the movement of nalidixic acid-resistant Escherichia coli strain (E. coli NAR) and bromide (Br) as an inert tracer in two soil types. The soils were contaminated at three levels of 0, 0.5 and 1% w/w of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) using crude oil. Steady-state saturated flow in the soil columns was controlled using a tension infiltrometer. Leaching experiments were conducted through the columns of repacked (un-weathered) and physically-weathered clay loam (CL) and sandy loam (SL) soils. The columns leachate was sampled at specific times for 4 pore volumes. The shape of breakthrough curves for the E. coli NAR and Br depended on soil texture and structure and the TPHs level. Preferential flow in the crude oil-mediated water-repellent soils facilitated the transport of contaminants especially E. coli NAR. Filtration coefficient and relative adsorption index of bacteria were greatest in the repacked CL soils and were lowest in the weathered SL soils. Discontinuity of soil pores and lower flow velocity resulted in greater filtration of E. coli NAR in the repacked CL soil than other treatments. Physical weathering induced the formation of aggregates which reduced soil particle surfaces available for retention of water-repellent oil and contaminants. Movement of both bacteria and Br tracer in the weathered SL soil with 1% TPHs was higher than other treatments. This finding was attributed to low specific surface area, continuity of the pores and water repellency-mediated preferential pathways in the weathered SL soil columns. Our findings implied that shallow groundwater resources could be very sensitive to microbial contamination particularly in the oil-mediated water-repellent soils.
