A new Sargassum drift model derived from features tracking in MODIS images Полный текст

Massive Sargassum stranding events affect erratically numerous countries from the Gulf of Guinea to the Gulf of Mexico. Forecasting transport and stranding of Sargassum aggregates require progress in detection and drift modelling. Here we evaluate the role of currents and wind, i.e. windage, on Sargassum drift. Sargassum drift is computed from automatic tracking using MODIS 1 km Sargassum detection dataset, and compared to reference surface current and wind estimates from collocated drifters and altimetric products. First, we confirm the strong total wind effect of ≈3 % (≈2 % of pure windage), but also show the existence of a deflection angle of ≈10° between Sargassum drift and wind directions. Second, our results suggest reducing the role of currents on drift to 80 % of its velocity, likely because of Sargassum resistance to flow. These results should significantly improve our understanding of the drivers of Sargassum dynamics and the forecast of stranding events.

This paper looks at experiential feedback and the technical and scientific challenges tied to the MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE cruise that took place in the Mediterranean Sea in spring 2019. This cruise proposes an innovative approach to investigate the accumulation and transfer of inorganic and organic contaminants within the planktonic food webs. We present detailed information on how the cruise worked, including 1) the cruise track and sampling stations, 2) the overall strategy, based mainly on the collection of plankton, suspended particles and water at the deep chlorophyll maximum, and the separation of these particles and planktonic organisms into various size fractions, as well as the collection of atmospheric deposition, 3) the operations performed and material used at each station, and 4) the sequence of operations and main parameters analysed. The paper also provides the main environmental conditions that were prevailing during the campaign. Lastly, we present the types of articles produced based on work completed by the cruise that are part of this special issue.

There are few cetacean tissue-specific polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentration studies in the Mediterranean, despite this region is among the most subjected to chemical contamination. PAH analyses were conducted in different tissues of striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba, N = 64) and bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus, N = 9) stranded along the French Mediterranean coastline from 2010 to 2016. Comparable levels were measured in S. coeruleoalba and T. trucantus (1020 and 981 ng g−1 lipid weight in blubber, 228 and 238 ng g−1 dry weight in muscle, respectively). The results suggested a slight effect of maternal transfer. The greatest levels were recorded by urban and industrial centers, and decreasing temporal trends were observed in males muscle and kidney, but not in other tissues. As a conclusion, the elevated levels measured could represent a serious threat to dolphins populations in this region, particularly by urban and industrial centers.

The uprising interest in gelatinous zooplankton populations must cope with a lack of robust time series of direct abundance observations in most of the ecosystems because of the difficulties in sampling small, fragile organisms, and of the dismissal of jellyfish as a nuisance. Most of the hypotheses about their dynamics are built on a few species and ecosystems and extended to the whole group, but the blooms are registered mainly for the members of the Class Scyphozoa that dwell in temperate, shallow waters. Within the scyphozoans, our knowledge about their phenology relies mainly on laboratory experiences. Here we present a long-term analysis of the phenology and life cycle of three scyphozoan species in an ecosystem affected by eutrophication in a climate change context. We have found that the phenology is directed by temperature, but not modified by different thermal and ecological regimes.

This paper evaluates the use of a PBS/PBAT biodegradable rope to reduce the environmental impact of fishing gear lost at sea. The study aims to better understand the degradation mechanisms that the rope and its monofilaments may encounter due to the long term exposure to seawater. The monofilaments were immersed in natural seawater for up to 18 months, and rope samples were also immersed to study aging at a larger scale and evaluate the ability of a modelling tool to predict initial and aged states of the rope. At low temperatures, no loss of properties was observed for the monofilament and rope. However, at higher temperatures, biodegradation and hydrolysis processes were observed, leading to a faster loss of properties in the monofilament compared to the rope. The modelling tool provided conservative predictions due to severe mechanical test conditions of aged monofilament and a degradation gradient within the rope structure.

The Anthropocene, defined by human-induced environmental transformations, presents a critical challenge: plastic pollution. This complex problem, particularly prominent in coastal and marine environments, requires integrated and adaptive responses. This opinion paper examines global efforts across policy interventions, scientific innovations, and public education, highlighting both advancements and hurdles in managing this problem. These include enforcement limitations in policy implementation, scalability and cost issues in scientific innovations, and challenges in effecting large-scale behavioral change through public education. The complexities inherent in managing plastic litter in coastal and marine environments are further discussed, emphasizing the necessity for an integrated approach. This approach involves interdisciplinary collaboration, adaptive management, stakeholder engagement, policy integration, sustainable financing, resilience building, capacity enhancement, technological innovation, policy reform, ecosystem-based management, disaster risk reduction, and advocacy. The management of plastic pollution in the Anthropocene requires strategic planning, innovative thinking, and unified global efforts, ultimately providing an opportunity to redefine our relationship with the planet and steer toward a more sustainable future.

There is growing interest in using the ecosystem services framework for environmental risk assessments of chemicals, including plant protection products (PPPs). Although this topic is increasingly discussed in the recent scientific literature, there is still a substantial gap between most ecotoxicological studies and a solid evaluation of potential ecotoxicological consequences on ecosystem services. This was recently highlighted by a collective scientific assessment (CSA) performed by 46 scientific experts who analyzed the international science on the impacts of PPPs on biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and ecosystem services. Here, we first point out the main obstacles to better linking knowledge on the ecotoxicological effects of PPPs on biodiversity and ecological processes with ecosystem functions and services. Then, we go on to propose and discuss possible pathways for related improvements. We describe the main processes governing the relationships between biodiversity, ecological processes, and ecosystem functions in response to effects of PPP, and we define categories of ecosystem functions that could be directly linked with the ecological processes used as functional endpoints in investigations on the ecotoxicology of PPPs. We then explore perceptions on the possible links between these categories of ecosystem functions and ecosystem services among a sub-panel of the scientific experts from various fields of environmental science. We find that these direct and indirect linkages still need clarification. This paper, which reflects the difficulties faced by the multidisciplinary group of researchers involved in the CSA, suggests that the current gap between most ecotoxicological studies and a solid potential evaluation of ecotoxicological consequences on ecosystem services could be partially addressed if concepts and definitions related to ecological processes, ecosystem functions, and ecosystem services were more widely accepted and shared within the ecotoxicology community. Narrowing this gap would help harmonize and extend the science that informs decision-making and policy-making, and ultimately help to better address the trade-off between social benefits and environmental losses caused by the use of PPPs.

Fast fashion and our daily use of fibrous materials cause a massive release of microfibres (MF) into the oceans. Although MF pollution is commonly linked to plastics, the vast majority of collected MF are made from natural materials (e.g. cellulose). We investigated the effects of 96-h exposure to natural (wool, cotton, organic cotton) and synthetic (acrylic, nylon, polyester) textile MF and their associated chemical additives on the capacity of Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas to ingest MF and the effects of MF and their leachates on key molecular and cellular endpoints. Digestive and glycolytic enzyme activities and immune and detoxification responses were determined at cellular (haemocyte viability, ROS production, ABC pump activity) and molecular (Ikb1, Ikb2, caspase 1 and EcSOD expression) levels, considering environmentally relevant (10 MF L−1) and worst-case scenarios (10 000 MF L−1). Ingestion of natural MF perturbed oyster digestive and immune functions, but synthetic MF had few effects, supposedly related with fibers weaving rather than the material itself. No concentration effects were found, suggesting that an environmental dose of MF is sufficient to trigger these responses. Leachate exposure had minimal effects on oyster physiology. These results suggest that the manufacture of the fibres and their characteristics could be the major factors of MF toxicity and stress the need to consider both natural and synthetic particles and their leachates to thoroughly evaluate the impact of anthropogenic debris. Environmental Implication. Microfibres (MF) are omnipresent in the world oceans with around 2 million tons released every year, resulting in their ingestion by a wide array of marine organisms. In the ocean, a domination of natural MF- representing more than 80% of collected fibres-over synthetic ones was observed. Despite MF pervasiveness, research on their impact on marine organisms, is still in its infancy. The current study aims to investigate the effects of environmental concentrations of both synthetic and natural textile MF and their associated leachates on a model filter feeder.

We analyzed plastic debris ingested by loggerheads from bycatch between 2007 and 2021 in the Southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO). We also analyzed plastic debris accumulated on beaches of the east coast of Madagascar as a proxy for ocean plastics to compare the characteristics of beached plastics and plastic ingested by turtles. We conducted a “brand audit” of the plastics to determine their country of origin. An oceanic circulation model was used to identify the most likely sources of plastics in the SWIO. In total, 202 of the 266 loggerheads analyzed had ingested plastics. Plastics categorized as “hard” and “white” were equally dominant in loggerheads and on beaches, suggesting no diet selectivity. Both the brand audit and circulation modeling demonstrated that Southeast Asia is the main source of plastic pollution in the region. This study demonstrates that loggerheads can be used as bioindicators of plastic pollution in the SWIO.

International audience | The use of biochars (BCs) and activated carbons as a way of sequestering soil-bound pollutants such as chlordecone (CLD) is increasingly being studied. This study aims at assessing the impact of Sargassum BC/AC particle size and Sargassum BC amendment rate on CLD adsorption in Nitisol and in Andosol. Four different types of carbonaceous matrices were tested: Sargasso carbon activated by phosphoric acid (SargH3PO4), Sargasso carbon activated by steam (SargH2O), biochar of Sargasso (Ch Sarg700), and a commercial activated carbon (ORBO™). In a first experiment, CLD contaminated Andosol and Nitisol were amended with 2% of each carbonaceous matrix divided into four particles size classes (< 50 µm, 50–150 µm, 150–200 µm, and > 200 µm). In a second experiment, the contaminated soils were amended with the biochar of Sargasso at five application rates (0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 2% (w/w)). After a 4-month aging, environmental availability tests were carried out on the soils of both experiments. The results of the first experiment showed that the best reductions of CLD environmental availability were obtained in both soils with the biochar of Sargasso and the ORBO™. More specifically, in nitisol, particle size under 50 µm of biochar of Sargasso and AC ORBO™ showed a CLD environmental availability reduction up to 72 ± 2.6% and 79 ± 2.6%. In Andosol, there was no significant difference between the three particle sizes (< 50 µm, 50–150 µm, and 150–200 µm) of the biochar of Sargasso on the reduction of environmental availability (average reduction of 43 ± 2.5%). The results of the second experiment showed that an amendment rate increase improves the immobilization of CLD. When the amendment rate was increased from 0.25 to 2%, the environmental availability was reduced by 43% in Nitisol and 50% in Andosol.
