Use of Fast Repetition Rate Fluorometry on Detection and Assessment of PAH Toxicity on Microalgae
2010
Pérez, Patricia | Fernández, Emilio | Beiras, Ricardo
Cultures of the flagellate Isochrysis galbana were used to carry out the ecotoxicological evaluation of four PAHs [(naphthalene, phenanthrene, pyrene (Pyr) and fluoranthene (Flu)] by monitoring growth rate and the fluorescence variables F ₀, F m, F v and F v/F m, determined with a fast repetition rate fluorometer. The results presented in this investigation showed that F v was a suitable endpoint in acute ecotoxicological tests with marine phytoplankton. The derived effective concentrations followed the known narcotic mechanism of toxicity and showed sensitivity levels comparable to marine invertebrate embryo-larval bioassays. Pyr and Flu showed the lowest EC₁₀, which ranged between 168-279 and 189-697 nM, respectively.

2010
Kayranli, Birol | Scholz, Miklas | Mustafa, Atif | Hofmann, Oliver | Harrington, Rory
The performances of a new and a mature integrated constructed wetland (ICW) system treating domestic wastewater were evaluated for the first time. The new ICW in Glaslough (near Monaghan, Ireland) comprises five wetland cells, and the mature system in Dunhill (near Waterford, Ireland) comprises four cells. The performance assessment for these systems is based on physical and chemical parameters collected for 1 year in Glaslough and 5 years in Dunhill. The removal efficiencies for the former system were relatively good if compared to the international literature: biochemical oxygen demand (BOD, 99.4%), chemical oxygen demand (COD, 97.0%), suspended solids (SS, 99.5%), ammonia nitrogen (99.0%), nitrate nitrogen (93.5%), and molybdate-reactive phosphorus (MRP, 99.2%). However, the mature ICW had removal efficiencies that decreased over time as the Dunhill village expanded rapidly. The mean removal efficiencies were as follows: BOD (95.2%), COD (89.1%), SS (97.2%), ammonia nitrogen (58.2%), nitrate nitrogen (−11.8%), and MRP (34.0%). The findings indicate that ICW are efficient in removing BOD, COD, SS, and ammonia nitrogen from domestic wastewater. Moreover, both ICW systems did not pollute the receiving surface waters and the groundwater.

2010
Ratto, Gustavo Enrique | Videla, Fabián | Maronna, Ricardo | Flores, Alberto | de Pablo Dávila, Fernando
The city of La Plata and its surroundings are a very populated area, which has an important Industrial Pole and intense traffic activity but environmental studies have been rare so far. This article presents and discusses the importance of wind frequencies and velocities for the transport of air pollutants. The study emphasizes the importance of knowing wind patterns on an hourly basis that can be helpful for designing a monitoring network as well as for preventing exposure to pollutants. Correlation between monthly SO₂ concentrations and wind frequencies and velocities are discussed for a particular set of directions NNW-NE that carry pollutants from industrial sources toward populated areas. As a result, averaged wind frequencies have been found to be very important for determining patterns influencing pollutants transport; the influence of averaged velocities has shown low variability (hourly and monthly). Hierarchical cluster analysis applied to wind roses provided a useful approach for analyzing and describing the general daily occurrence of winds.

2010
Murphy, Paul N. C. | Stevens, R. J.
Phosphorus (P) loss from agricultural soils to water is a major contributor to eutrophication. In an incubation experiment with five contrasting soils, lime and gypsum showed potential as source measures to decrease P loss risk, as assessed by water extractions. Soils were incubated with lime to achieve a target pH of 6.5 and with gypsum at equivalent Ca rates for 108 days. P was added (17 kg P ha⁻¹) as KH₂PO₄ in solution. Gypsum appears to have greater potential as a source measure, decreasing molybdate-reactive P (RP) solubility by 14-56% and organic P (OP) by 10-53% across all soils. RP and Ca may have precipitated or co-sorbed, and OP may have been stabilised in organic matter complexes due to the bridging effect of Ca and the flocculating effect of increased ionic strength. Greater effectiveness of gypsum may be due to its higher solubility and the fact that it increases Ca concentrations without increasing pH. Lime decreased RP solubility in two soils (by 4% and 20%) but increased solubility in two and had no effect in a third. The overall effect of lime may depend on several competing effects of raised pH and Ca concentration that may vary in importance depending on soil characteristics such as base cation and P status. For the highest P status soil, both lime and gypsum were effective, decreasing RP solubility by 4% and 15%, respectively. Targeted treatment of high P soils may be an effective and economical strategy to minimise P losses.

2010
Haas, Doris | Unteregger, Martina | Habib, Juliana | Galler, Herbert | Marth, Egon | Reinthaler, Franz F.
Bioaerosols are conglomerates of biological particles such as bacterial and fungal propagules and are produced in sewers and sewage treatment plants through evaporation and turbulence. In order to evaluate the hazard to employees in wastewater treatment plants, airborne microorganisms were measured at two different sites in the sewage systems and in the grit chamber of a treatment plant. Two additional samples were taken during high-pressure cleaning in the relief sewer. Outdoor air samples served as background values. Airborne microorganisms were collected using the impaction method with the MAS-100® and the impingement method with the SKC Biosampler®. The concentrations of coliform bacteria as well as the fungal species Aspergillus fumigatus were determined in addition to mesophilic bacteria counts (cfu/m³). The highest concentrations of mesophilic bacteria were found in the encased grit chamber. Coliform bacteria were found infrequently only in the aerosol of the sewage systems; A. fumigatus was detected at all sampling sites both indoors as well as outdoors. During high-pressure cleaning, total bacteria concentrations reached up to 4.0 × 104 cfu/m3, coliforms up to 3.0 × 103 cfu/m3. These results show that personnel protective measures should be recommended to decrease the exposure risk to biological particles.

2010
Fürst, Christine | Zirlewagen, Dietmar | Lorz, C (Carsten)
The article presents results of a case study in northeastern Germany, where magnetic susceptibility assessment was carried out at grid-wise field measurements. The measurements were clustered into three different depth levels, which represent the humus layer, the transition zone between humus layer and mineral horizon, and the mineral horizon. Taking these three depth levels, a multiple regression-based regionalization approach was applied, testing and using additional environmental parameters derived from geology, topography, and stand type with the aim to develop a comprehensive model for spatial variability of magnetic susceptibility. Spatial variation of magnetic susceptibility was predicted with a high precision by the multiple linear regression models. A slightly differing set of model parameters was selected for the single depth levels. In tendency, magnetic susceptibility values in depth level 6-10 cm were best explained by the distance to Bitterfeld and by soil properties. In depth level 11-15 cm, variables which describe the orographic conditions and stand properties gain in importance. In depth level 21-25 cm, variables indicating soil and site properties disappear completely. Here, aspect and land surface characteristics play a major role together with stand properties. A spatial stratification of the model for a distance of up to 25 km to the former emitters provided a further improvement of the model quality considering the prediction of small-scale variations of magnetic susceptibility.

2010

Sulfonamide antibiotics can enter agricultural soils by fertilisation with contaminated manure. While only rough estimations on the extent of such applications exist, this pathway results in trace level contamination of groundwater. Therefore, we studied the transport of three sulfonamides in leachates from field lysimeters after application of a sulfonamide-contaminated liquid manure. In a 3-year period, the sulfonamides were determined in 64% to 70% of all leachate samples at concentrations between 0.08 to 56.7 µg L⁻¹. Furthermore, sulfonamides were determined in leachates up to 23 months after application, which indicated a medium- to long-term leaching risk. Extreme dry weather conditions resulted in highest dislocated amounts of sulfonamides in two of the three treatments. Furthermore, soil management such as tillage and cropping affected the time between application and breakthrough of sulfonamides and the intra-annual distribution of sulfonamide loads in leachates. Although the total sulfonamide leaching loads were low, the concentrations exceeded the limit value of the European Commission of 0.1 µg biocide L⁻¹ in drinking water in more than 50% of all samples. Furthermore, the medium-term mean concentration of the sulfonamides ranged from 0.08 and 4.00 µg L⁻¹, which was above the limit value of the European Commission in 91 out of 158 samples. Therefore, sulfonamides applied to soils in liquid manure under common agricultural practice may cause environmental and health risks which call for a setting up of more long-term studies on the fate of antibiotics.

2010
Rene, Eldon R. | Murthy, D. V. S. | Swaminathan, T.
Biological treatment systems such as biofilters offer a potential alternative to the existing physicochemical techniques for the removal of volatile organic compounds from gaseous emissions. In this experimental work, continuous phase biofiltration of xylene vapors were performed in a laboratory scale compost biofilter that was inoculated with a xylene-acclimatized consortium. The performance was assessed by continuously monitoring the removal efficiency (RE) and elimination capacity (EC) of the biofilter at loading rates varying between 2-220 g m⁻³ h⁻¹. The steady-state removal efficiencies were maintained between 60% and 90% up to a loading rate of 80 g m⁻³ h⁻¹. The removal efficiency decreased significantly at loading rates higher than 100 g m⁻³ h⁻¹. The pressure drop values were consistently less and insignificant in affecting the performance of the system. The present study also focuses in evaluating the stability of biofilter during shut down, restart, and shock-loading operations. An immediate restoration of biological activity after few days of starvation indicated their capability to handle discontinuous treatment situations which is more common to industrial biofilters. The sensitiveness of the biofilm to withstand shock loads was tested by abruptly increasing/decreasing the loading rates between 9-55 g m⁻³ h⁻¹, where, removal efficiencies between 60-90% were achieved. These results prove the resilience of the biomass and the stability of the compost biofilter. Anew, results from kinetic analysis reveal that, steady-state xylene removal in the biofilter can be adequately represented by Michaelis-Menten type kinetics, and the kinetic constants namely, ECmax (120.4 g m⁻³ h⁻¹) and K s (2.21 g m⁻³) were obtained.

The upper Great Egg Harbor River watershed in New Jersey's Coastal Plain is urbanized but extensive freshwater wetlands are present downstream. In 2006-2007, studies to assess levels of total mercury (THg) found concentrations in unfiltered streamwater to range as high as 187 ng/L in urbanized areas. THg concentrations were <20 ng/L in streamwater in forested/wetlands areas where both THg and dissolved organic carbon concentrations tended to increase while pH and concentrations of dissolved oxygen and nitrate decreased with flushing of soils after rain. Most of the river's flow comes from groundwater seepage; unfiltered groundwater samples contained up to 177 ng/L of THg in urban areas where there is a history of well water with THg that exceeds the drinking water standard (2,000 ng/L). THg concentrations were lower (<25 ng/L) in unfiltered groundwater from downstream wetland areas. In addition to higher THg concentrations (mostly particulate), concentrations of chloride were higher in streamwater and groundwater from urban areas than in those from downstream wetland areas. Methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in unfiltered streamwater ranged from 0.17 ng/L at a forest/wetlands site to 2.94 ng/L at an urban site. The percentage of THg present as MeHg increased as the percentage of forest + wetlands increased, but also was high in some urban areas. MeHg was detected only in groundwater <1 m below the water/sediment interface. Atmospheric deposition is presumed to be the main source of Hg to the wetlands and also may be a source to groundwater, where wastewater inputs in urban areas are hypothesized to mobilize Hg deposited to soils.

2010
Małek, Stanisław
The fluxes of N-NO ₃ ⁻ , N-NH ₄ ⁺ , S-SO ₄ ²⁻ , Na⁺, K⁺, Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ from bulk precipitation to throughfall, stemflow and soil water surface flows were studied during 1999-2003 in planted Norway spruce forest stands of different ages (11, 24, 91 and 116 years in 1999). Also, runoff from the corresponding Potok Dupniański Catchment in the Silesian Beskid Mts was studied. N deposition was above the critical load for coniferous trees. The interception increased with stand age as well as leaf area index and so did the leaching from the canopy of almost all the analysed elements, but especially S-SO ₄ ²⁻ , H⁺ and K⁺. The nutrient fluxes varied with age of the spruce stands. Throughfall showed a high amount of S and of the strong acids (S-SO ₄ ²⁻ and N-NO ₃ ⁻ ) deposited to the soil, especially in older spruce age classes. Decomposition of organic matter caused a rise in water acidity and an increase in the concentrations of all the analysed ions; the leaching of minerals, however, was low (under 1%). The horizontal soil water flow showed an increase in the amount of water and amount of ions and contributed to a further decrease of pH at the soil depth of 20 cm. Element concentrations and their amounts increased with water penetrating vertically and horizontally on the slopes. Considerable amounts of ions, especially S and alkaline cations, were carried beyond the reach of the root system and then left the catchment. In the long term, these mineral losses will adversely affect health and growth of the spruce stands, and the increased acidity with stand age will presumably have negative effects on the runoff water ecosystem.
