The asymmetric effect of air quality on cross-industries’ stock returns: evidence from China
2019
Su, Chi-Wei | Wang, Kai-Hua | Tao, Ran | Lobonţ, Oana-Ramona
This paper offers a perspective for the link between air quality and stock returns in China through quantile Granger causality test. Compared to previous studies, the study makes the following innovations. Given the Chinese government plays an important role in economic development, its industrial policies are regarded as a new indispensable supplement of analysis framework apart from investor mood. Next, due to different reflections from cross-industries for different AQ levels, the industry heterogeneity is further considered. Also, nine industries are chosen as a sample, including environmental protection, wind power equipment, steel, photovoltaic equipment, thermal power, tourism, coal, medical service, and medical equipment. Besides, the quantile Granger causality test is robust to misspecification errors when detecting the potential dependence structure between the variables of air quality and stock returns. The empirical results show that the causal link exists in all industries, except medical service. Meanwhile, this impact presents asymmetrical features that when air quality is unhealthy, it has an influence on stock returns of the remaining eight industries. It can be explained by increasing cortisol level, more stringent environmental protection, and industrial policies. These conclusions have essential implications for market participants due to the fact that air quality generates various influences on the stock market. That is why a sustainable environmental design, strict regulatory framework, and special monitoring activities should be highly regarded in China.

2019
Oguntoke, Olusegun | Emoruwa, Folayemi O. | Taiwo, Matthew A.
Indiscriminate disposal and open burning of sawmill and municipal solid wastes constitute hazards to the quality of the immediate environment and human health. This study assessed the levels of pollutants emitted by burning sawmill and municipal wastes, and their potential hazards. Nine selected sawmills and 6 municipal solid-waste dumps in Abeokuta metropolis were investigated. During waste burning, the concentrations of NO₂, SO₂, CO, H₂S, NH₃ and VOC were monitored in replicates at the dumpsites, 10 m, 20 m and the nearest houses using portable samplers (Aeroqual and Multi-RAE). Mean, ANOVA, correlation and regression statistical tools were used to analyse air quality data; air quality index (AQI) was employed to classify the hazard rating of the gaseous pollutants. Nearest neighbour analysis in ArcGIS 10.0 was used to investigate dumpsites location pattern within the city. The concentrations (mg/m³) of sampled parameters from source to nearest house (NH) at the dumpsites ranged as follows: < 0.002–0.175 (NO₂), < 0.002–0.235 (SO₂), 0.065–0.425 (H₂S), 13.98–47.40 (CO), 6.74–170.41 (NH₃) and 31.13–820.03 (VOC) in wet and dry seasons. The mean concentrations of NO₂, SO₂ and VOC were below permissible limits at most locations while CO values were higher at all dumpsite. Significant variations (p < 0.05) were observed in the concentrations of the monitored parameters except NO₂ values (SMW) in dry season. AQI rated NO₂ and SO₂ concentrations as “good” at all sites while CO emission ranged from unhealthy to hazardous across the dumpsites. In conclusion, the present locations of SMW and MSW dumps in the city degrade environmental quality and are unsafe for human health.

This study evaluated the reutilization of waste materials (scrap tires, sewage sludge, and wood chips) to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) benzene/toluene/ethylbenzene/xylenes/trichloroethylene/cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (BTEX/TCE/cis-DCE), plasticizer di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), and pharmaceutically active compound carbamazepine from artificially contaminated water. Different hybrid removal processes were developed: (1) 300 mg/L BTEX + 20 mg/L TCE + 10 mg/L cis-DCE + tires + Pseudomonas sp.; (2) 250 mg/L toluene + sewage sludge biochar + Pseudomonas sp.; (3) 100 mg/L DEHP + tires + Acinetobacter sp.; and (4) 20 mg/L carbamazepine + wood chips + Phanerochaete chrysosporium. For the hybrid process (1), the removal of xylenes, TCE, and cis-DCE was enhanced, resulted from the contribution of both physical adsorption and biological immobilization removal. The hybrid process (2) was also superior for the removal of DEHP and required a shorter time (2 days) for the bioremoval. For the process (3), the biochar promoted the microbial immobilization on its surface and substantially enhanced/speed up the bioremoval of toluene. The fungal immobilization on wood chips in the hybrid process (4) also improved the carbamazepine removal considerably (removal efficiencies of 61.3 ± 0.6%) compared to the suspended system without wood chips (removal efficiencies of 34.4 ± 1.8%). These hybrid processes would not only be promising for the bioremediation of environmentally concerned contaminants but also reutilize waste materials as sorbents without any further treatment.

Yu, Zengcheng | Cai, Yixin | Lu, Yuqin | Liu, Chao | Yang, Zhennai | Liu, Shilin | Luo, Xiaogang
Increasing degradation of amoxicillin in water by low-cost advanced functional activated carbon-based materials derived from bagasse is an effective and economic way to remove the antibiotic residue pollutant and for high-valued utilization and transformation of plant wastes. In this work, bagasse was pyrolyzed and Zn²⁺ was activated for designing a high-efficiency bagasse-based activated carbon, which was characterized by FTIR, XRD, XPS, SEM, EDS, and ζ potential analyses. These analyses illustrated the mechanism of amoxicillin degradation, and microscale zero-valent zinc in bagasse-based activated carbon has a key role in amoxicillin degradation. Amoxicillin was broken down by reductive degraded radicals, which were produced by microscale zero-valent zinc corrosion in water. After the amoxicillin degradation, the byproduct of zinc hydroxide being adsorbed onto the used bagasse-based activated carbon can provide possibility of sustainable regeneration. Mass spectra analysis illustrated the main degradation products of amoxicillin. The kinetic experiments were adopted to observe the process of amoxicillin degradation, followed by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The isotherm experiments demonstrated that the maximum amoxicillin degradation capacity of bagasse-based activated carbon was about 46 mg g⁻¹. The bagasse wastes were used as carbon source to design potential advanced activated carbon materials for increasing degradation of amoxicillin in water.

2019
Zhou, Tongtong | Hu, Wenwen | Yu, Shen
Worldwide socioeconomic development has resulted in huge irretrievable environmental problems in various ecosystems. This study employed seven coastal watersheds in two provinces, Zhejiang and Fujian, China forming a gradient to testify the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) interactions between socioeconomic development and environmental impact at a watershed scale. Annual socioeconomic indicators, including gross domestic product (GDP) and its components, registered population (agricultural and non-agricultural population), and electricity consumption, and annual discharges of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonium were collected at a county level, and land use pattern to generate watershed level dataset in the period of 2011–2016. Results indicated that non-agricultural GDP per capita of the non-agricultural population and discharge of COD or ammonium per unit of total GDP were top-ranked pair-indicators significantly fitting the EKC model instead of the classic GDP per capita and pollutants. The development of seven selected watersheds have passed the turning point of the EKC and entered impact-reducing development stages along the EKC, i.e., the three Zhejiang watersheds are at the low-impact development stage, the Huotong Stream watershed from Fujian province was at impact-declining development stage right, and other three Fujian watersheds were at medium-impact development stage. In term of the environmental impact indicator, pollutant discharge per unit of total GDP serves as a development impact indictor per se. These findings might provide an EKC-based approach to support and strategize the watershed management for sustainable development in the world.

The prevalence and the identification of the helminth eggs load of raw sewage sludge was assessed of three different wastewater treatment systems. The results showed a variety of parasite species with following average concentrations; five taxa belonging to three classes nematodes, cestodes and trematodes were inventoried. The class of nematodes is the most diverse with 5 taxa. It is represented by the eggs of Ascaris sp., Capillaria sp., Trichuris sp., Toxocara sp., and Ankylostome sp., then comes the cestodes class, this is represented by the eggs of Tænia sp. The trematode class is represented by Schistosoma sp. The lagooning station of Chichaoua shows the highest load 7 species with Ascaris 21 eggs/g; Capillaria sp., 11 eggs/g; Trichuris sp., 6 eggs/g; Toxocara sp., 2 eggs/g and Ankylostome sp., 1 egg/g; Taenia sp., 2eggs/g; and Schistosoma sp., 1 egg/g. Infiltration-percolation sludge show the presence of 4 species of helminths eggs in sludge from anaerobic settling with different rates: 15 eggs/g for Ascaris sp., 15 eggs/g for Trichuris sp., 13 eggs/g for Capillaria sp., and 8 eggs/g for Taenia sp. However, in sand filter pool, the sludge helminth eggs load was decreased by 47% of Ascaris sp., 85% of Capillaria sp., and 75% of Taenia sp., Nevertheless, an increase of Trichuris eggs load was noted in the second sludge by 17%. Five helminth eggs was detected in primary sludge coming from decantation pools in activated sludge plant in Marrakech, that is Ascaris sp., with a load of 16 eggs/g; Capillaria sp., with 3 eggs/g, Trichuris eggs with 2 eggs/g; Taenia sp., with 4 eggs/g; and Schistosoma sp., with 2 eggs/g. The abatement load of Ascaris sp. with 81% and Schistosoma and Taenia sp., with 100% was noted in biological sludge. Nevertheless, an increase load of Capillaria and Trichuris eggs 81% and 75% respectively was observed in this sludge coming from biological pools. The distribution of parasitic helminth eggs is linked to the differences in demographic and socio-economic status, seasonal variation, physico-chemical characteristic of helminth eggs, and the purification wastewater system performance.

Zhu, Jianmin | Lee, Rina Won | Twum, Claudia | Wei, Yudan
A number of studies has pointed to air pollution as an additional factor that could be associated with preterm birth. We assessed in this study the association between exposure to PM₂.₅ in ambient air during pregnancy and preterm birth in metropolitan areas of the state of Georgia, where the rate of preterm birth has been among the highest in the nation over the years. Birth data were obtained from the National Center for Health Statistics natality dataset. The study population consisted of 53,094 singleton live births between January 1 and December 31, 2004 in nine metropolitan counties of Georgia. Preterm birth was defined as birth, which occurs before 37 weeks of gestation. County-level daily air quality index (AQI) data obtained from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was used to estimate individual exposure levels of PM₂.₅ for each study participant based on the county of residence for the duration of the pregnancy. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the association, adjusting for potential confounders. Of the infants whose mothers resided in the nine metropolitan counties of Georgia, 4543 (8.6%) were born preterm. A higher rate of preterm birth (9.8%) was observed in infants whose mothers were exposed to ambient PM₂.₅ with AQI values > 50 than the ones with AQI ≤ 50 (EPA standard for good air quality conditions). Mothers with exposure to PM₂.₅ at average AQI values greater than 50 during the entire pregnancy were at increased risk of preterm birth (odds ratio 1.15; 95% CI 1.07, 1.25), after adjusting for sex of infant, mother’s age, race/ethnicity, education, marital status, prenatal care, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and season of conception. The study provides more evidence on the role of PM₂.₅ in preterm birth. Reducing exposure to ambient particulate matter, especially in urban areas, for pregnant women would be necessary to improve the health of infants.

2019
de Souza Celente, Gleison | Colares, Gustavo Stolzenberg | Machado, Ênio Leandro | Lobo, Eduardo Alexis
Water shortage is a current problem faced by many regions. The deterioration of water bodies driven by the directly discard of untreated wastewater worsens the water shortage and implies in more costly treatments to meet local standards for water quality. In rural areas, the problem is even worse, once conventional centralized treatment plants do not encompass them. Decentralized treatment systems must present low-cost, local availability, standards-meeting efficiency, and simplified operation. The present study examines the combined use of algae turf scrubber and down-flow vertical constructed wetlands for a University’s sanitary wastewater treatment. After a hydraulic detention time of 21 days, the unit was able to reach 49%, 48%, 98%, 82%, 99.2%, 70.1%, 44%, 83%, 72%, 86%, 69%, 95%, and 99.9% for conductivity, total soluble solids, turbidity, apparent color, N-NH₃, total nitrogen, P-soluble, total carbon, chemical oxygen demand, inorganic carbon, TOC, Escherichia coli, and total coliforms. In accord to the Brazilian standard ABNT 13969/97, the treated effluent is eligible for reuse in floor and sidewalks washing, garden irrigation, and landscaping purposes.

2019
Wang, Xinxin | Fan, Pengpeng | Wu, Zheng | Liang, Qiao
Previous study found out that Chinese household have a higher awareness of environmental protection but less positive initiative to protect the environment. With the increasing Chinese income, higher education, and changing environment state, public awareness and behavior on environment protection are changing. This paper tries to find out the current public willingness to participate in environment protection, by using the latest data from China Household Finance Survey (CHFS) which is investigated in 2017 that covered 31 provinces with a sample of more than 40 thousand households. Besides, logit regression model is adopted to find out the impact of pollution and household demographic on environment protection behavior. The results show that around 71.6% of surveyed households have willingness to pay for the environment protection. Rural residents and higher educated individuals are more likely to participate in environment protection. However, things are different if they face different degrees of pollution. Results can be explained with China’s current economic situation and would have some implications for future study on China’s public willingness to pay for the environment.

2019
Liao, Zhenliang | Zhou, Can | Tian, Wenchong | Hu, Tiantian | Guo, Ru
Monitoring on urban water environment and analysis of engineering improvement measures are intricate and time-consuming tasks. In previous studies, the integration of hydrodynamic and water quality models and geographical information system (GIS) usually takes three approaches: loose coupling, tight coupling, and full coupling. However, this paper adopted a special loose coupling approach—case-based reasoning (CBR) to develop an integrated decision support system. This was characterized by invoking the case base stored in the GIS platform as the output of the model. The fused capability of model’s water quality predication and strong spatial data processing analysis of GIS can be realized at the same time by integration. The functionality of the integrated system was illustrated through a case study of Chaohu, a medium-sized city in China, which includes case retrieval, result interpretation, and the visual display in the GIS platform. Results verified the feasibility and operability of the developed method. As a useful tool, the integrated decision support system makes it simpler and more convenient for decision makers to make decisions efficiently and quickly.
