Incinerated Sewage Sludge Products as Amendments for Agricultural Soils: Leaching and Plant Uptake of Trace Elements

Preliminary leaching column and greenhouse plant uptake studies were conducted in two soils with contrasting characteristics amended with varying rates (0 to 148.3 Mg ha-1) of incinerated sewage sludge (ISS) and weathered sewage sludge (WISS) to estimate the leaching losses of trace elements from the soils amended with incinerated sewage sludge by products and to evaluate the uptake and accumulation of these elements in various parts of Sorghum vulgaris var. sudanense Hitche. (“Sorgrass''), a Sorghum-Sudan grass hybrid. Results of this study indicated that leaching of Cr, Cd, Zn, Cu, Ni, Fe and Mn from soils amended with ISS and WISS increased with increasing rates of amendment. Results of the leaching column study further revealed greater leaching losses from coarse-textured soil compared to medium-textured soil and also from ISS amended soils than with WISS amended soils. Results further suggested that the type of element and the interaction between the element and soil properties affected the leachability of various trace elements. The uptake study indicated uptake and accumulation of trace elements by plant parts increased with increasing rates of amendments. Greater plant uptake and accumulation of trace elements were observed in plant parts grown in soils amended with ISS compared to that of WISS. Results also indicated a greater accumulation of trace elements in below ground part of the plants (roots) compared to that was observed in above ground parts (shoots). Limited data obtained from this one season preliminary studies demonstrated that incinerated sewage sludge products from wastewater treatment plants could be used as soil amendments at low application (no more than 24.7 Mg ha-1) for optimum plant growth, and dry matter yield without resulting in substantial accumulation of metals in plant parts at concentrations above the recommended critical limits and without causing significant leaching losses of various trace elements. It is imperative that long-term field studies are necessary to evaluate the long-term impact of using these new products in leaching and accumulation of various trace elements in plants and soils.

An in situ erosion flume was used to measure the stability of sediment deposits in Hamilton Harbour, Ontario, Canada. The flume consists of a rectangular duct with an opening at the bottom. A submerged pump attached to the downstream end of the flume circulates the ambient water through the flume, thereby generating turbulent shear flows inside the flume. When the flume rests on a sediment deposit, the exposed part of the sediment deposit is subjected to the flow shear stress. By applying a continually increasing flow shear stress on the sediment deposit and by measuring the amount of sediment erosion, it is possible to assess the erosional stability of the sediment deposits. An under water video camera was mounted on the flume to get visual images of the sediment erosion process. The flume was used at two sites in the Harbour. The erosional resistances measured by the flume for the two sites were different. Measurement of dry density of the sediment deposits using an ultrasonic device was carried out to explain the differences in the stability of sediment deposits from the two sites.

This investigation examines metal release from freshwater sediment using sequential extraction and single-step cold-acid leaching. The concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn released using a standard 3-step sequential extraction (Rauret et al., 1999) are compared to those released using a 0.5 M HCl; leach. The results show that the three sediments behave in very different ways when subject to the same leaching experiments: the cold-acid extraction appears to remove higher relative concentrations of metals from the iron-rich sediment than from the other two sediments. Cold-acid extraction appears to be more effective at removing metals from sediments with crystalline iron oxides than the “reducible” step of the sequential extraction. The results show that a single-step acid leach can be just as effective as sequential extractions at removing metals from sediment and are a great deal less time-consuming.

The objective of this study was to examine the chemistry of trace elements in coalbed methane (CBM) discharge water reacting with semi-arid ephemeral stream channels in Powder River Basin, Wyoming. The study area consisted of two ephemeral streams, Burger Draw and Sue Draw. These streams are tributaries to the perennial Powder River, Wyoming. Samples were collected bimonthly from three CBM discharge points and seven channel locations in Burger Draw and Sue Draw. Samples were also collected bimonthly from the Powder River above and below the confluence of Burger Draw. Before sample collection, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and turbidity were measured in the field. Samples were transported to the laboratory and analyzed for dissolved trace elements including iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), boron (B), arsenic (As), selenium (Se), and fluoride (F). Results suggest pH of discharge water was 7.1 and increased significantly in the downstream channel of Burger Draw to 8.84 before joined with the Powder River. Temperature of CBM produced water at discharge points ranged between 20.3 and 22.7 [composite function (small circle)]C. Before discharge, DO concentrations of CBM produced water were between 1.42 and 1.5 mg/L. No significant differences in temperature, DO, and turbidity were found between Burger Draw flow and Powder River flow. However, significant differences were found within the sampling period in temperature and turbidity in flow of Burger Draw. The temperature, DO, and turbidity were all significantly different in Powder River within the sampling period. The CBM discharge water consisted of higher concentrations of F, Fe and B compared to other components. Significant changes were observed for Fe, Mn, and As; and seasonally for B. Dissolved Fe and Mn decreased, while As and Se increased in downstream channel flow. These findings will be useful in proper management of CBM produced water in semi-arid environments.

Chemical immobilisation of inorganic contaminants by increasing the sorption capacity of soils and/or promoting the formation of sparingly soluble precipitates may be a cost-effective approach to counteract groundwater pollution. This study focuses on the enhanced retention of arsenic in two contaminated soils by addition of solid iron(II)sulphate. Four lab-scale column experiments were performed under unsaturated conditions with subsoil material sampled at a former timber preservation site and a pigment production plant. Arsenic effluent concentrations indicated 89.9 to 99.8% immobilisation in the treated columns. Sequential extractions showed a shift in contaminant binding forms towards the iron(hydr)oxide and residual fractions. Possible immobilisation mechanisms are the precipitation of FeAs phases, the formation of inner sphere complexes, and/or the occlusion of arsenic in newly formed amorphous/crystalline iron oxides. Bromide breakthrough curves point to the fact that the addition of iron(II)sulphate only moderately affects soil hydraulic properties. In contrast to reduced emissions of arsenic, increased seepage water concentrations were observed for other trace elements (e.g., cobalt, nickel, zinc). Mass balances indicate that this effect is primarily related to the temporary pH-drop caused by the oxidation of ferrous iron. The results show that chemical immobilisation using iron(II)sulphate is a promising way to protect groundwater quality at sites contaminated with timber preservation and pigment production remnants. As a prerequisite, optimum amendment levels need to be established and practical/field tests should be accompanied by a monitoring for a broad range of relevant trace elements.

Characterizing sorption processes is essential to understand the environmental distribution and toxicity potential of endocrine disruptors in terrestrial and aquatic systems. The sorption behaviors of three endocrine disruptors (bisphenol A (BPA), 17β-estradiol (E2), and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2)) on sediments were investigated using batch techniques. Samples were taken from some representative reaches in several major Chinese rivers. More attention has been paid to the effect of sediment organic components on the sorption of BPA, E2, and EE2. The results show that the sediment organic carbon-normalized partition coefficients (K oc (sed)) for three endocrine disruptors are in the order of EE2 > E2 > BPA, which corresponds to the octanol-water partitioning coefficients (logK ow) of the compounds. Moreover, the K oc values for humic substances (K oc (hs)) are comparable with the K oc (sed) values and highly dependent on the physico-chemical properties of humic substances in sediments. The UV absorptivity at 272 nm (A ₂₇₂), which suggests the abundance of aromatic rings in humic substance structure, correlates well with the K oc (hs) values. In addition, the infrared spectra of the humic substances extracted from sediments show four strong bands centered at 3,400 cm-¹, 1,625 cm-¹, 1,390 cm-¹, and 1,025 cm-¹. The K oc (hs) values have a positive linear relation with the peak area ratio for peak at 1,025 cm-¹ and a negative linear relation with the peak area ratio between peaks at 1,625 cm-¹ and 1,025 cm-¹. Hence, the hydrogen bonds play a critical role to the sorption of selected endocrine disruptors.

Lithological and granulometric investigations of the surface and short core sediments in L. Martiska (northeastern Estonia) showed that variations in the grain-size parameters and LOI content were influenced by the changes in deposition conditions during the regression and transgression phases monitored in the lake since the 1960s. During the regression and transgression phases displacement of the erosion-transport-accumulation zones in the lake took place depending on the bottom topography. The water level fluctuations are especially clearly reflected in grain-size variations in cores from peripherial area.

The results of a field experiment that investigated the in situ association of total coliforms (TC) and E. coli (EC) with suspended inorganic particles in a drinking water reservoir are presented. The experimental program measured TC and EC at various locations and at multiple depths in a medium sized Australian reservoir subject to continuous inflow forcing. Particle concentrations and size distributions were measured using a LISST (Laser In Situ Scattering Transmissometer) profiler. Correlations between the particle measurements and the bacteria were calculated to provide in situ evidence for the association of TC and EC with suspended inorganic particles. Both TC and EC correlated most strongly with fine particles between 3.2 and 4.5 μm. Development of a simple Lagrangian model of the inflow for particles and microbes additionally provided insight into the relative roles of dilution, sedimentation, and inactivation for the bacteria. The model results and the correlations support the theory that high association with the small particles was due to their high number concentration and the effective surface area available for attachment. It was also evident that the majority of bacteria (> 80%) were physically associated with the suspended particles and allowed a quantitative estimate of the net sedimentation rate. Bacterial attachment and the concomitant increase in settling should be considered when modeling bacterial dynamics, during design of monitoring programs and when implementing pathogen risk management strategies.

The adsorption and degradation of chlorobenzene on partially modified organoclays and by the autochthonous microorganism Rhodococcus B528 were studied by means of the batch technique. Organoclays were prepared from Na-montmorillonite (MM) by using dodecyltrimethylammonium (C₁₂) and dioctadecyldimethylammonium (2C₁₈) bromides. The degree of modification was 35 (2C₁₈-35-MM) and 89% (C₁₂-89-MM) of the cation exchange capacity of MM. The adsorption experiments were carried out using headspace GC. The intercalation of chlorobenzene into the interlayers of organo-MM was detected by X-ray diffraction. The adsorption isotherms found were of the S1 type indicating a cooperative effect. Chlorobenzene showed a higher affinity for 2C₁₈-35-MM than C₁₂-89-MM, which could not only be explained by the organic carbon content. The comparison with 2,4-dichlorophenol adsorption has implied that for the studied systems the different adsorption mechanisms are primarily governed by the different molecular properties and not by the type of absorbent. The presence of 2C₁₈-35-MM caused no negative effect on the investigated microorganisms and complete biodegradation of chlorobenzene was achieved without desorption limitation for growth, demonstrating the applicability of partially modified organoclays for bioremediation.
