The main objective of this study was to investigate the 2019 and 2022 oil spill events that occurred off the coast of the State of Ceará, Northeastern Brazil. To further assess these mysterious oil spills, we investigated whether the oils stranded on the beaches of Ceará in 2019 and 2022 had the same origin, whether their compositional differences were due to weathering processes, and whether the materials from both were natural or industrially processed. We collected oil samples in October 2019 and January 2022, soon after their appearance on the beaches. We applied a forensic environmental geochemistry approach using both one-dimensional and two-dimensional gas chromatography to assess chemical composition. The collected material had characteristics of crude oil and not refined oils. In addition, the 2022 oil samples collected over 130 km of the east coast of Ceará had a similar chemical profile and were thus considered to originate from the same source. However, these oils had distinct biomarker profiles compared to those of the 2019 oils, including resistant terpanes and triaromatic steranes, thus excluding the hypothesis that the oil that reached the coast of Ceará in January 2022 is related to the tragedy that occurred in 2019. From a geochemical perspective, the oil released in 2019 is more thermally mature than that released in 2022, with both having source rocks with distinct types of organic matter and depositional environments. As the coast of Ceará has vast ecological diversity and Marine Protected Areas, the possibility of occasional oil spills in the area causing severe environmental pollution should be investigated from multiple perspectives, including forensic environmental geochemistry.

We aimed to explore the effects of mixtures of lead and various metals on blood pressure (BP) and the odds of pre-hypertension (systolic blood pressure (SBP) 120–139 mmHg, and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) 80–89 mmHg) and hypertension (SBP/DBP ≥140/90 mmHg) among Chinese adults in a cross-sectional study. This study included 11,037 adults aged 18 years or older from the 2017–2018 China National Human Biomonitoring. Average BP and 13 metals (lead, antimony, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, thallium, chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, manganese, nickel, selenium, and tin) in blood and urine were measured and lifestyle and demographic data were collected. Weighted multiple linear regressions were used to estimate associations of metals with BP in both single and multiple metal models. Weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression was performed to assess the relationship between metal mixture levels and BP. In the single metal model, after adjusting for potential confounding factors, the blood lead levels in the highest quartile were associated with the greater odds of both pre-hypertension (odds ratio (OR): 1.56, 95% CI: 1.22–1.99) and hypertension (OR:1.75, 95% CI: 1.28–2.40) when compared with the lowest quartile. We also found that blood arsenic levels were associated with increased odds of pre-hypertension (OR:1.31, 95% CI:1.00–1.74), while urinary molybdenum levels were associated with lower odds of hypertension (OR:0.68, 95% CI:0.50–0.93). No significant associations were found for the other 10 metals. WQS regression analysis showed that metal mixture levels in blood were significantly associated with higher SBP (β = 1.56, P < 0.05) and DBP (β = 1.56, P < 0.05), with the largest contributor being lead (49.9% and 66.8%, respectively). The finding suggests that exposure to mixtures of metals as measured in blood were positively associated with BP, and that lead exposure may play a critical role in hypertension development.

Previous studies have indicated that maternal exposure to particles with aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm (PM₂.₅) is associated with adverse birth outcomes. However, the critical exposure windows remain inconsistent. A retrospective cohort study was conducted in Huai River Basin, Henan, China during 2013–2018. Daily PM₂.₅ concentration was collected using Chinese Air Quality Reanalysis datasets. We calculated exposures for each participant based on the residential address during pregnancy. Binary logistic regression was used to examine the trimester-specific association of PM₂.₅ exposure with preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight (LBW) and term LBW (tLBW), and we further estimated monthly and weekly association using distributed lag models. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for each 10 μg/m³ increase in PM₂.₅ exposure. Stratified analyses were performed by maternal age, infant gender, parity, and socioeconomic status (SES). In total, 196,780 eligible births were identified, including 4257 (2.2%) PTBs, 3483 (1.8%) LBWs and 1770 (0.9%) tLBWs. Maternal PM₂.₅ exposure during the second trimester were associated with the risk of PTB and LBW. At the monthly level, the PTB and LBW risks were associated with PM₂.₅ exposure mainly in the 4th -6th month. By estimating the weekly-specific association, we observed that critical exposure windows of PM₂.₅ exposure and PTB were in the 18th- 27th gestational weeks. Stronger associations were found in younger, multiparous mothers and those with a female baby and in low SES. In conclusion, the results indicate that maternal PM₂.₅ exposure during the second trimester was associated with PTB and LBW. Younger, multiparous mothers and those with female babies and in low SES were susceptible.

Microplastics debris in the marine environment have been widely studied across the globe. Within these particles, the most abundant and prevalent type in the oceans are anthropogenic microfibers (MFs), although they have been historically overlooked mostly due to methodological constraints. MFs are currently considered omnipresent in natural environments, however, contrary to the Northern Hemisphere, data on their abundance and distribution in Southern Oceans ecosystems are still scarce, in particular for sub-Antarctic regions. Using Niskin bottles we've explored microfibers abundance and distribution in the water column (3–2450 m depth) at the Burdwood Bank (BB), a seamount located at the southern extreme of the Patagonian shelf, in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. The MFs detected from filtered water samples were photographed and measured using ImageJ software, to estimate length, width, and the projected surface area of each particle. Our results indicate that small pieces of fibers are widespread in the water column at the BB (mean of 17.4 ± 12.6 MFs.L⁻¹), from which, 10.6 ± 5.3 MFs.L⁻¹ were at the surface (3–10 m depth), 20 ± 9 MFs.L⁻¹ in intermediate waters (41–97 m), 24.6 ± 17.3 MFs.L⁻¹ in deeper waters (102–164 m), and 9.2 ± 5.3 MFs.L⁻¹ within the slope break of the seamount. Approximately 76.1% of the MFs were composed of Polyethylene terephthalate, and the abundance was dominated by the size fraction from 0.1 to 0.3 mm of length. Given the high relative abundance of small and aged MFs, and the oceanographic complexity of the study area, we postulate that MFs are most likely transported to the BB via the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Our findings imply that this sub-Antarctic protected ecosystem is highly exposed to microplastic pollution, and this threat could be spreading towards the highly productive waters, north of the study area.

The blood–follicle barrier (BFB) between the blood and follicular fluid (FF) can maintain the microenvironment balance of oocyte. Boron, an exogenous environmental trace element, has been found to possibly play an important role in oocyte maturation. This study aimed to examine the distribution characteristics of boron across the BFB and find the potential effect of boron on FF microenvironment. We analyzed the concentration of boron in paired FF and serum collected from 168 women undergoing in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer in Beijing City and Shandong Province, China. To explore the potential health impact of boron enrichment in oocyte maturation, a global proteomics analysis was conducted to tentatively correlate the protein levels with the boron enrichment. Interestingly, the results showed that the concentration of boron in FF (34.5 ng/mL) was significantly higher than that in serum (22.0 ng/mL), with a median concentration ratio of 1.52. Likewise, the concentrations of boron in FF and serum were positively correlated (r = 0.446), suggesting that boron concentration in serum can represent its concentration in follicular fluid to a large extent.. This is the first time to observe the enrichment of boron in the FF to our knowledge. It is interesting to observe a total of 13 proteins, which mainly belong to immunoglobulin class, were positively correlated with boron concentration in FF. We concluded that boron, as one environmental trace element, was enriched in FF from blood validated by two area in north china, which may be involved in an increased level of immune processes of immunoglobulins.

2022
Boscalid is a novel, highly effective carboximide fungicide that has been substantially and irrationally applied in greenhouses. However, little is known about the residual characteristics of boscalid and its ecological effects in long-term polluted greenhouse soils. Therefore, actual boscalid pollution status in greenhouse soils was simulated by repeatedly introducing boscalid into the soil under laboratory conditions. The degradation characteristics of boscalid, and its effects on the diversity, composition, function, and co-occurrence patterns of the soil microbial community were systematically investigated. Boscalid degraded slowly, with its degradation half-lives ranging from 31.5 days to 180.1 days in the soil. Boscalid degradation was further delayed by repeated treatment and increasing its initial concentration. Boscalid significantly decreased soil microbial diversity, particularly at the recommended dosage. Amplicon sequencing analysis showed that boscalid altered the soil microbial community and further stimulated the phylum Proteobacteria and four potential boscalid-degrading bacterial genera, Sphingomonas, Starkeya, Citrobacter, and Castellaniella. Although the network analysis revealed that boscalid significantly reduced the microbial network complexity, it enhanced the vital roles of Proteobacteria by increasing its proportion and strengthening the relationships among the internal bacteria in the network. The soil microbial function in the boscalid treatment were simulated at the recommended dosage and two-fold recommended dosage but showed an inhibition-recovery-stimulation trend at the five-fold recommended dosage with an increase in treatment frequency. Moreover, the expression of nitrogen cycling functional genes, nifH, AOA amoA, AOB amoA, nirK, and nirS in all boscalid treatments displayed an inhibition-recovery-stimulation trend during the entire experimental period, and the effects were more pronounced at the five-fold recommended dosage. In conclusion, repeated boscalid treatments delayed degradation, reduced soil microbial diversity and network complexity, disturbed soil microbial community, and interfered with soil microbial function.

2022
Over the past two decades, there has been a lot of discussion about the rapid increase of microplastics (MPs) due to their persistence, ubiquity, and toxicity. The widespread distribution of MPs in various freshwater ecosystems makes them available for different trophic levels biota. The ingestion and trophic transfer of MPs may induce potential impacts on freshwater food webs. Therefore, this systematic review is an in-depth review of 51 recent studies to confirm the spatial distribution of MPs in the Chinese freshwater ecosystem including water, sediment and biota, exposure pathways, and impacts on freshwater food webs. The result suggested the white, transparent and colored, Polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene (PE) of <1 mm fibers were dominant in Chinese freshwaters. The uptake of MPs by various freshwater organisms as well as physiological, biological and chemical impacts on food webs were also elucidated. At last, some limitations were discussed for future studies to better understand the effects of MPs on food webs.

2022
Xiong, Xiong | Tappenbeck, Tyler H. | Wu, Chenxi | Elser, James J.
Microplastics are contaminants that are closely associated with human activity and are often abundant even in remote areas. As the largest natural freshwater lake in the western USA, Flathead Lake is a suitable site to study microplastics in lakes in less-populated areas of North America. Our assessment of microplastics in lake surface water samples showed that microplastic densities and concentrations in Flathead Lake were similar to those in other lakes located in less-populated areas around the world, with densities ranging from 8.00 × 10⁴ to 4.22 × 10⁵ particles/km² with a mean concentration of 1.89 × 10⁵ particles/km². Dry deposition rates for microplastics ranged from 4 to 140 particles/m²/day with an average of 69 particles/m²/day and were significantly higher in the fall. Microplastic concentrations in wet deposition ranged from 0.006 particles/mL to 0.050 particles/mL with highest concentrations in winter and lowest in summer. Fibrous microplastics were predominant in both lake water and atmospheric deposition. The high densities of microplastics in the sample sites located near the Flathead River inlet suggests that the river is an important source of microplastics to Flathead Lake. The high densities of microplastics and high proportions of non-fibrous microplastics near populated areas of the lake imply that local human activities also affect microplastics in Flathead Lake. Although the annual flux of microplastics in dry deposition was higher than that in wet deposition, the relatively modest difference suggests that precipitation might enhance the deposition of microplastics. The results of this study indicate that instituting increased control measures that target both reducing the microfibers generated by laundry and improving the overall level of plastic waste management in the watershed may help in controlling microplastic levels in Flathead Lake.

2022

The properties and metal-binding abilities of dissolved organic matter (DOM) rely on its molecular weight (MW) structure. In this study, the spatial differences of DOM in compositions, MW structures, and binding mechanisms with copper (Cu²⁺) in Dongping Lake were investigated by applying excitation-emission matrix combining parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC), synchronous fluorescence (SF) spectra, two-dimensional correlation spectra (2D-COS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. The EDOM for the entrance of the Dawen River and PDOM for the macrophyte-dominated region were divided from DOM of Dongping Lake based on hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) and were size-fractioned into MW < 500 kDa and <100 kDa fractions. According to EEM-PARAFAC, Dongping Lake was dominated by tryptophan-like substances with MW < 500 kDa. The concentration of PDOM was higher than that of EDOM (p < 0.05). 2D-COS showed that protein-like components preceded humic-like components binding to Cu²⁺ regardless of sample type (215 nm > 285 nm > 310–360 nm). The Cu²⁺ binding capacity of DOM exhibited specific differences in space, components, and molecular weights. The humic-like component 1 (C1) and tryptophan-like component 4 (C4) of PDOM showed stronger binding abilities than those of EDOM. Endogenous tryptophan-like component 4 (C4) had a higher binding affinity for Cu²⁺ than humic-like components (logKₐ: C4 > C1 > C2) in PDOM irrespective of MW. Humic-like components with MW < 500 kDa displayed higher binding potentials for Cu²⁺. FTIR spectra showed that the main participants of DOM-Cu complexation included aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic groups, amide Ⅰ bands, and carboxyl functional groups. This study provides spatial-scale insights into the molecular weight structure of DOM in influencing the behavior, fate, and bioavailability of heavy metals in lakes.

2022
Zhou, Linjun | Liu, Kai | Zhao, Yu | Cui, Ling | Dong, Chenglong | Wang, Zaizhao
Biological invasions and continued salinization of freshwater are two global issues with largely serious ecological consequences. Increasing salinity in freshwater systems, as an environmental stressor, may negatively affect normal life activities in fish. It has been documented that salinity limits the invasive success of alien species by mediating physiological and life-history performances, however, there are few studies on how salinity affects its invasive process via altered behaviors. Using wild-caught invasive western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) as animal model, in this study, we asked whether gradual increasing salinity affects behaviors (personality and mate choice decision here), life-history traits, as well as the correlation between them by exposing G. affinis to three levels salinity (freshwater, 10 and 20‰). Results showed that, with increased salinity, male tended to be shyer, less active, less sociable, and reduced desire to mate, and female tended to be shyer, less active and lost preferences for the larger male. Furthermore, across salinity treatments, male exhibited reduced body fat content and rising reproduction allocation, however, pregnant female revealed diametrically opposed trends. In addition, the correlation between life-history traits and behaviors was only identified in pregnant female. It seems that either salinity or life-history traits directly affects mosquitofish behaviors. In summary, our results partially emphasize the harmful consequences of salinity on both life-history traits and behavioral performances. These findings provide a novel perspective on how salinity potentially affect fish fitness via altering personalities, mate choice decisions, as well as body condition, and hence supports the idea that salinity could affect the spread of invasive mosquitofish.
