Quantitative investigation of ZnO nanoparticle dissolution in the presence of δ-MnO2 Полный текст

The widespread use of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), the second most produced nanomaterial, inevitably leads to their release into the environment. In this study, dissolution and transformation of ZnO NPs in the presence of δ-MnO₂, an abundant and ubiquitous manganese (Mn) oxide mineral, was investigated via a suite of techniques covering bulk to molecular scales. Dissolution kinetics indicated that the presence of δ-MnO₂ significantly affected ZnO NP dissolution rate/trend and equilibrium Zn²⁺ concentration, which were found to be mainly dependent on the concentration and mass ratio of ZnO NPs and δ-MnO₂. Approximately 300 mg ZnO NPs per g δ-MnO₂ was expected for ZnO NP uptake at pH 7.0 via ZnO NP dissolution and surface Zn²⁺ adsorption. X-ray diffraction (XRD), ζ potential, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and Zn K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) results revealed that when the mole content of ZnO NPs was less than the total adsorption sites of δ-MnO₂ surface, ZnO NPs were completely dissolved and adsorbed on δ-MnO₂ surface in the form of inner-sphere complexes. A fraction of ZnO NPs persisted when the mole ratio of ZnO to δ-MnO₂ further increased. These results suggest that the transformation and fate of ZnO NPs is affected by environment-relevant minerals such as Mn oxides due to their huge capacity of fixing dissolved metal cations at the surface or interlayer structure.

To evaluate Cu and Zn levels in bladder cancer (BC) patients and their relationship with expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1). Plasma levels of Cu and Zn were determined in 66 transitional bladder cell carcinoma patients (BC group) and 60 matched controls. The concentration of Cu and Zn as well as the expressions of both VEGF and HIF-1 were also estimated in cancerous and non-cancerous bladder tissues in the BC group. The results showed that plasma Cu and Cu/Zn ratio were significantly higher in BC group when compared with the control group. In contrast, the plasma Zn in BC group was significantly lower than in the controls. Comparing levels of Cu and Zn in cancerous and non-cancerous bladder tissues among the BC group indicated a significantly higher Cu levels in the cancerous tissues, while Zn levels was significantly lower. There were higher expressions of both VEGF and HIF-1 in the cancerous samples. Moreover, the Cu concentration in cancerous tissues was significantly correlated with expressions of VEGF and HIF-1. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the increase in plasma Cu/Zn ratio and plasma Cu and the decrease in plasma Zn may be risk factors for development of bladder cancer. We concluded that alteration of plasma and bladder tissue levels of both Cu and Zn is correlated with pathogenesis of bladder cancer. The increase in Cu level in cancerous tissues of BC group has an important role in angiogenesis in bladder cancer cells.

Biodiesel production from the transesterification of triglycerides produces crude glycerol as a by-product with a percentage of glycerol typically 20–80% (w/w) depending on the specific conditions of the transesterification process. This crude glycerol requires further purification in order to achieve commercial value and to increase the profitability of biodiesel production. For this reason, the main objective of this work was to obtain glycerol with a purity greater than 90% (w/w) starting from water-free crude glycerine as obtained from the IPN-GBD-1000® transesterification process and treating it via single-step neutralization according to green chemistry principles. For this purpose, sulphuric (H₂SO₄) and citric (C₆H₈O₇) acids were evaluated as neutralizers by adding dilute acid solutions to crude glycerine under mild conditions. The physicochemical characterization of both crude and purified glycerol was carried out by means of infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ¹H and ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results indicated that the neutralization method herein developed allowed the obtaining of glycerol with purities of 98.5% and 84.37% (w/w) and treatment efficiencies of 98.5% and 46.7% for sulphuric and citric acid treatments, respectively. In addition, the environmental viability of the sulphuric acid process was evaluated through the calculation of green metrics such as environmental factor, water factor and mass intensity, through which significant environmental advantages were confirmed. The one-step neutralization process reported herein generates zero waste when sulphuric acid is used; it also decreases the water consumption 17-fold and reduces 3-fold the use of raw materials per mass unit of purified glycerol compared to the conventional acidification-neutralization process.

Globally, odorant incidents are occurring at an increasing frequency, magnitude, and duration under the dual influences of eutrophication and climate change. However, the contribution of multiple ecotypes to odorant production in the complicated and dynamic lake ecosystems remains unclear. In this study, the odorants and environmental conditions in algae-dominated zones (ADZs) and macrophyte-dominated zones (MDZs) in Lake Taihu were identified and characterized. Results showed that the ADZs were characterized by an abundance of pigments and nutrients and low DO levels, while the MDZs were featured as high TOC/TN ratios and high DO levels. Most odorants in ADZs and several in MDZs exceeded the odorant threshold content. The dominant odorants were dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS), β-ionone and β-cyclocitral in ADZs, which were associated with the accumulation and decomposition of algal detritus. For MDZs, the dominant odorants were 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) and geosmin, which were at least partially attributed to the massive addition of bait in a traditional aquaculture area. In addition, the odorant concentration in the water of ADZs was approximately 3 to 21 times higher than that in MDZs, while in the benthic sediment, the odorant concentration in ADZs was approximately 2 to 3 orders of magnitude higher than in MDZs. This study highlights the production and accumulation of nuisance odorants in the benthic sediment of ADZs, indicating a risk of diffusion from the sediment to the water column. This was supported by the correlation of odorants in the water column with that in the sediment. The results of this study will be helpful for the management of different ecotypes suffering from nuisance odorants problems.

Rice is frequently reported to be contaminated with heavy metals (HMs); thus, the human health risks from its consumption have received increasing attention. A total of 165 commercial rice samples from Sri Lanka were collected to determine their cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and lead (Pb) concentrations. The exposure risk for Sri Lankans from the estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of these toxicants was assessed. Simultaneously, non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were evaluated using hazard quotients (HQs) and the hazard index (HI). The results revealed that the average levels of Cd, As, and Pb in commercial rice were 0.080 ± 0.130, 0.077 ± 0.040, and 0.031 ± 0.050 mg/kg, respectively, with ranges of 0.003–0.727, 0.019–0.217, and 0.001–0.345 mg/kg (expressed on a dry weight basis), respectively. The average EDIs of Cd, inorganic As (iAs), and Pb were 0.772, 0.490, and 0.306 μg/kg body weight (bw)/day, respectively; these were below provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) values recommended by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), but iAs was above the recommended reference doses (RfDs) recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). However, approximately 25% and 75% of the Cd and iAs HQs for the Sri Lankan population, respectively, were greater than 1, suggesting a potential health risk, whereas the HQs for Pb was less than 1. Considering the additive effect, HI values of the P90, P95, P97.5, and P99 percentiles would reach 4.773, 6.458, 8.392, and 11.614, implying that intake of the combined metals might result in potential health risks.

It remains unclear why the area of a cyanobacterial bloom increases in a shallow lake after a typhoon passes. In this study, the mechanisms of cyanobacterial bloom expansion were investigated by studying meteorological factors, water quality, algal biomass, and bloom area in Lake Taihu before and after typhoons (2007–2016). Our results showed that typhoon-induced sediment resuspension caused a short-term increase in nutrients, but nutrients returned to pre-typhoon levels after the typhoon passages. The short-term nutrient release during a typhoon did not result in an obvious increase in Microcystis cell density in two bays of Lake Taihu (Gonghu and Meiliang). Under strong winds, Microcystis aggregates were uniformly distributed in the water column downwind and then dispersed into different directions by wind-driven currents. In particular, Microcystis in the surface water were transported to the center of Lake Taihu. After a typhoon, dispersed Microcystis refloated and formed blooms. Thus, the bloom area was enlarged compared with before a typhoon. Several days after a typhoon, the bloom area gradually reduced as a result of a steady breeze on the horizontal accumulation of Microcystis.

The environmental health of Buenaventura Bay, a highly impacted tropical estuary, is influenced by numerous human activities, including mining upstream. Large- and small-scale fishing plays an important role in the local economy, so we investigated the dynamic processes of bioaccumulation of mercury at basal trophic levels. Four samples were taken at each of the four locations in Buenaventura Bay during each of the four seasons of 2015. We measured the total mercury content (T-Hg, dry weight) in sediments and in muscle tissue across 17 macroinvertebrate species. The most abundant were the blue crab (C. arcuatus) and the mantis shrimp (S. aculeata aculeata). Blue crab showed an average muscle T-Hg value exceeding the limit of 0.2 g·g⁻¹, which is the maximum T-Hg level suggested for food consumption by vulnerable humans and populations: pregnant women, children, and the community that feeds from this source of protein on a daily basis. It was found that, 6.22% of individuals exceeded the 0.5 g·g⁻¹ level, which is the maximum T-Hg level suggested for food consumption by the general population: the population that consumes it sporadically. Significantly high values of T-Hg in blue crab and mantis shrimp occurred during low salinity conditions in the estuary, suggesting that Hg mainly originates from river runoff during the rainy season. Nevertheless, the biota-sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) was favored in high salinity, which could mean greater availability of Hg for higher levels of the estuarine food web in the dry season and in marine waters. In general, the T-Hg levels in some samples exceeded 0.2 g·g⁻¹. Therefore this pollutant must be monitored due to its biomagnification potential and as a threat to human health, especially that for the local population of fishermen and their families.

Remote sensing freely provides many processed image products such as moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS), and long-term data record (LTDR), for the investigation of drought evolution. Our objectives are to investigate drought evolution and spatiotemporal variations from 1982 to 2017 based on two remote-sensing indices, namely, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the vegetation condition index (VCI), and a popular meteorological index—standardized precipitation index (SPI)—under four different land cover types, cropland, forestland, grassland, and desertland in China. The modified Mann–Kendall test was used to detect the significance of a trend. The Pearson correlation method was used to find the relationship between NDVI anomaly, VCI, precipitation, and SPI. The results revealed that (a) both mean monthly and yearly precipitation had a general land cover type rank of forestland > grassland ≈ cropland > desertland. (b) A positive correlation was found between drought indices (NDVI anomaly, VCI, SPI) and precipitation for different land cover types. The NDVI anomaly and VCI were well correlated with 3-month SPI for cropland and were well correlated with 6-month SPI for forestland. VCI performed better than NDVI anomaly when correlating with SPI. (c) The coefficient of determination (R²) was obtained for precipitation and VCI in the driest (2011) and wettest (2016) years. The R² values for desert and grassland ranged from 0.70 to 0.90 and for cropland and forestland were lower (0.54–0.69). (d) Only precipitation, SPI, and VCI of cropland had significant increasing trends. The spatial distribution patterns of precipitation, NDVI, and VCI increased with the decreased elevation. The study revealed that desert and grassland had been regularly exposed to moderate or extreme droughts conditions and confirmed that desert and grassland are more sensitive to short-term drought.

Lipases are hydrolytic enzymes owing much importance in industrial applications. These enzyme-based detergents are ecofriendly and produce a wastewater with low level of COD (chemical oxygen demand). In the present work, a novel halophilous, thermoalkaline, and detergent-tolerant lipase produced by a newly isolated Aeribacillus pallidus strain VP3 was studied. Considerable interest has been given to this lipase by the improvement of its catalytic activity through the optimization of the pH, the (C/N) ratio, and the inoculum size, using the response surface methodology based on the Box-Behnken design of experiments. A total of 16 experiments were conducted, and the optimized pH, (C/N) ratio, and inoculum size were 10, 1, and 0.3, respectively. The results of the analysis of variance (ANOVA) test indicated that the established model was significant (p value < 0.05). The optimization of the production conditions leads to 2.83-fold of increase in the catalytic activity calculated as the ratio of the activity obtained after optimization (68 U) and the initial activity before optimization (24 U). All in all, the lipase of Aeribacillus pallidus could be considered as a potential candidate to be incorporated in detergent formulations since it shows a good stability towards detergents and wash performance.

Vanadium (V) is a potential toxic pollutant, and thus, V pollution in reservoir sediment should be scientifically evaluated because reservoirs are the main source of drinking water in China. However, the pollution assessment of V in reservoir sediment is often overestimated or underestimated due to the limitation for selecting local background values. In this study, the selection of the V background value in sediments was based on regional geochemical baseline (RGB) model. Multiple methods including geo-accumulation index (Igₑₒ), potential ecological risk index (EI), and health risk assessment were applied to evaluate V pollution in sediment cores collected from the Panjiakou–Daheiting Reservoirs (PDR). The results show that the mean value of V concentrations in the PDR sediment cores was 92.86 mg/kg (57.69–141.19 mg/kg), which is higher than the soil background in Hebei Province and stream sediment values in China. V concentrations in the Panjiakou Reservoir were higher than those in the Daheiting Reservoir. The RGB value of V was 96.33 mg/kg in the PDR sediments. A comparison of the V concentrations and RGB values in the sampling sites indicated that half of these sites are impacted by anthropogenic inputs. Among the sites influenced by human activity, the average anthropogenic contribution was 9.9%, suggesting that majority of V in the PDR sediments originated from natural source. The pollution assessments of V were evaluated using Igₑₒ and EI with RGB as the background value, and results indicated that the sediments in the PDR were not polluted with V. The environmental impact assessment model was also established for calculating V accumulation in fish due to sediment resuspension. Then, health risk assessment model was applied to further calculate the health risk to residents due to fish consumption. The evaluated target hazard quotient demonstrated that local fish consumption produced no adverse effect on human health during sediment disruption.
