Alzheimer’s disorder (AD) is very difficult to manage and treat. The complexity of the brain, the blood–brain barrier influencing a multitude of parameters/biomarkers, as well as numerous other factors involved often contribute to the decline in the chances of treatment success. Development of the new drug moiety also takes time, being necessary to consider both its toxicity and related issues. As a strategic plan, a combined strategy is being developed and considered to address AD pathology using several approaches. A combination of vitamin E, quercetin, and basil oil in a nano-based formulation is designed to be administered nasally. The antioxidant present in these natural-based products helps to treat and alleviate AD if a synergistic approach is considered. The three active substances mentioned above are well known for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. The nanoformulation helps the co-delivery of the drug moiety to the brain through the intranasal route. In this review, a correlation and use of vitamin E, quercetin, and basil oil in a nano-based formulation is described as an effective way to treat AD. The intranasal administration of drugs is a promising approach for the treatment of neurodegenerative and mental disorders, as this route is non-invasive, enhances the bioavailability, allows a drug dose reduction, bypasses the blood–brain barrier, and reduces the systemic undesired effect. The use of natural products is generally considered to be just as safe; therefore, by using this combined approach, the level of toxicity can be minimized.

Free-living birds play an important role as bioindicators in natural environments. In this study, we used the micronucleus test and nuclear erythrocyte abnormalities to investigate the difference in the genotoxic damage frequency between animals in agricultural areas (soybean planting) in relation to the conserved area. It was also discussed the bird’s eating habits, which are important for ecotoxicological analysis. The results point to a difference between the insectivorous, granivorous, and omnivorous guilds. The omnivore Gnorimopsar chopi was the species that most exhibited micronucleus frequency in the protected area. In the agricultural area, the animals did not differ in the genotoxic damage frequency. In the comparison between common species in both environments, G. chopi from the agricultural area showed a micronuclei frequency almost three times higher in relation to specimens collected in the conserved area. Based on these results, this study adds to the efforts of using the micronucleus test as a simple and accessible tool for biomonitoring the wild fauna. It can be concluded that the passerine, G. chopi, due to its higher genotoxic damage frequency may be a strong candidate to indicate environmental health.

Metal toxicity can largely affect the growth and yield of numerous plant species. Plants have developed specific mechanisms to withstand the varying amounts of metals. One approach involves utilization of microRNAs (miRNAs) that are known for cleaving transcripts or inhibiting translation to mediate post-transcriptional control. Use of transcription factors (TFs) or gene regulation in metal detoxification largely depends on metal-responsive miRNAs. Moreover, systemic signals and physiological processes for plants response to metal toxicities are likewise controlled by miRNAs. Therefore, it is necessary to understand miRNAs and their regulatory networks in relation to metal stress. The miRNA-based approach can be important to produce metal-tolerant plant species. Here, we have reviewed the importance of plant miRNAs and their role in mitigating metal toxicities. The current review also discusses the specific advances that have occurred as a result of the identification and validation of several metal stress-responsive miRNAs.

Sun, Xu | Yu, Hao | Solvang, Wei Deng
The recent advancement of digitalization and information and communication technology (ICT) has not only shifted the manufacturing paradigm towards the Fourth Industrial Revolution, namely Industry 4.0, but also provided opportunities for a smart logistics transformation. Despite studies have focused on improving the smartness, connectivity, and autonomy of isolated logistics operations with a primary focus on the forward channels, there is still a lack of a systematic conceptualization to guide the coming paradigm shift of reverse logistics, for instance, how “individualization” and “service innovation” should be interpreted in a smart reverse logistics context? To fill this gap, Reverse logistics 4.0 is defined, from a holistic perspective, in this paper to offer a systematic analysis of the technological impact of Industry 4.0 on reverse logistics. Based on the reported research and case studies from the literature, the conceptual framework of smart reverse logistics transformation is proposed to link Industry 4.0 enablers, smart service and operation transformation, and targeted sustainability goals. A smart reverse logistics architecture is also given to allow a high level of system integration enabled by intelligent devices and smart portals, autonomous robots, and advanced analytical tools, where the value of technological innovations can be exploited to solve various reverse logistics problems. Thus, the contribution of this research lies, through conceptual development, in presenting a clear roadmap and research agenda for the reverse logistics transformation in Industry 4.0.

Pulmonary congestion is an intermediate biomarker and long-term predictor of acute decompensated heart failure. To evaluate the effects of air pollution on pulmonary congestion assessed by lung ultrasound. In a single-center, prospective, observational study design, we enrolled 1292 consecutive patients with chronic coronary syndromes referred for clinically indicated ABCDE-SE, with dipyridamole (n = 1207), dobutamine (n = 84), or treadmill exercise (n = 1). Pulmonary congestion was evaluated with lung ultrasound and a 4-site simplified scan. Same day values of 4 pollutants were obtained on the morning of testing (average of 6 h) from publicly available data sets of the regional authority of environmental protection. Assessment of air pollution included fine (< 2.5 µm diameter) and coarse (< 10 µm) particulate matter (PM), ozone and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂).NO₂ concentration was weakly correlated with rest (r = .089; p = 0.001) and peak stress B-lines (r = .099; p < 0.001). A multivariable logistic regression analysis, NO₂ values above the median (23.1 µg/m³) independently predicted stress B-lines with odds ratio = 1.480 (95% CI 1.118–1.958) together with age, hypertension, diabetes, and reduced (< 50%) ejection fraction. PM₂.₅ values were higher in 249 patients with compared to those without B-lines (median and IQR, 22.0 [9.1–23.5] vs 17.6 [8.6–22.2] µg/m³, p < 0.001). No other pollutant correlated with other (A-C-D-E) SE steps.Higher concentration of NO₂ is associated with more pulmonary congestion mirrored by B-lines at lung ultrasound. Local inflammation mediated by NO₂ well within legally allowed limits may increase the permeability of the alveolar-capillary barrier and therefore pulmonary congestion in susceptible subjects.ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT030.49995.

The present study reports a precise and accurate binary dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction method for the enrichment of selected endocrine disruptor compounds for determination by gas chromatography flame ionization detector. Optimal variables of influential extraction parameters (binary solvent volume, disperser solvent volume, and vortex period) were determined with a design experiment. The main effects of these parameters were examined using analysis of variance (ANOVA), and the optimum parameters of the model were obtained from the model predictor. The analytes recorded detection limits varying between 0.43 and 2.7 ng/mL under the optimum experimental conditions. All the analytes exhibited good linearity and high precision (%RSD<10%) for six replicate measurements of the lowest calibration concentrations. The enhancement in calibration sensitivity for the analytes in GC-FID was found in the range of 41.9–64.5 times for each analyte by applying the developed method. The accuracy and feasibility of the method was assessed using water samples from a well and a hospital sewer, and the percent recovery results calculated using matrix matching calibration were in the range of 90–113%. These results demonstrated that the analytes can be accurately quantified in real aqueous matrices using the developed method.

Tong, Rui | Wang, Yan | Zhu, Yuchun | Wang, Yongqiang
Seeking effective policies for reducing chemical pesticides has recently been the focus of agricultural sustainable development. A randomly selected sample of 559 small-scale farmers on the China Loess Plateau was investigated in 2018. We analyzed the effect of certification of agricultural production on the adoption of integrated pest management (IPM) by using the Poisson regression model. The result shows that the certification of agriculture products, subsidies of integrated pest management, and the price increase of certified agriculture products significantly promote the adoption of IPM. However, government supervision in certified agriculture products does not significantly promote the adoption of IPM. The cognition of IPM acquired by farmers significantly promotes the adoption of IPM, while the age of farmers negatively affects the adoption of IPM. We suggest that the government should strengthen the certification of agriculture products and provide subsidies of the adoption of IPM for farmers who produce certified agriculture products. The market needs to guarantee a higher price of certified agro-products which the IPM are adopted. The government should strengthen supervision of certified agriculture products, promote the extension of IPM and enhance farmers’ knowledge of IPM, and promote more farmers to replace chemical pesticides with IPM.

Zheng, Huan | He, Yu
The Chinese authorities revised its Pollution Discharge Fee Policy and officially implemented the Environmental Protection Tax Law on January 1, 2018. Considering the importance of such a reform, we utilise the ordinary least squares and probit regression models to explore the effects of these policies on firm performance during the transitional period of 2016 to 2019. We find that fee rates are negatively related to firm financial performance, i.e. profitability and development capability, and positively associated with firm environmental performance, i.e. corporation social responsibility. We applied the IV 2SLS regression model to control for firms’ research and development investment, and the empirical results remain the same. Regarding subsample tests, these policies have stronger impacts on firm performance among heavy polluters and non-state-owned enterprises than those of environmental friendly firms and state-owned enterprises. The empirical results hold after we control for various potential endogeneity issues. The findings of this article may assist the authorities to adjust the tax law, so as to protect the environment and relieve the negative impact on firm performance simultaneously.

Emir, Fırat
This study examines the inverted U-shape relationship between financial development and energy intensity for Turkish economy. To this end, ARDL model has been employed to estimate the short-run and long-run coefficients. The Bayer and Hanck (2013) combined cointegration technique and ARDL bounds testing were employed to examine the cointegration association among investigated variables using annual data from 1976 to 2016. The statistically significant and inverted U-shaped association was affirmed between financial development and energy intensity in Turkey. The results also show that financial development has positive and significant effect on energy intensity. The result of Hacker and Hatemi-J (2012) leveraged bootstrap causality test reveals the unidirectional relationship running from financial development to energy intensity in Turkey. However, the feedback causal effect was found between industrialization and energy intensity. Further insights into causal relationship and policy implications are provided in the Conclusion section.
