Surfactants, after use, enter the environment through diffuse and point sources such as irrigation with treated and non-treated waste water and urban and industrial wastewater discharges. For the group of non-ionic synthetic surfactant alcohol ethoxylates (AEOs), most of the available information is restricted to the levels and fate in aquatic systems, whereas current knowledge of their behavior in soils is very limited. Here we characterize the behavior of different homologs (C12–C18) and ethoxymers (EO3, EO6, and EO8) of the AEOs through batch experiments and under unsaturated flow conditions during infiltration experiments. Experiments used two different agricultural soils from a region irrigated with reclaimed water (Guadalete River basin, SW Spain). In parallel, water flow and chemical transport were modelled using the HYDRUS-1D software package, calibrated using the infiltration experimental data. Estimates of water flow and reactive transport of all surfactants were in good agreement between infiltration experiments and simulations. The sorption process followed a Freundlich isotherm for most of the target compounds. A systematic comparison between sorption data obtained from batch and infiltration experiments revealed that the sorption coefficient (Kd) was generally lower in infiltration experiments, performed under environmental flow conditions, than in batch experiments in the absence of flow, whereas the exponent (β) did not show significant differences. For the low clay and organic carbon content of the soils used, no clear dependence of Kd on them was observed. Our work thus highlights the need to use reactive transport parameterization inferred under realistic conditions to assess the risk associated with alcohol ethoxylates in subsurface environments.

In this study, municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) was first washed (pretreatment) with pure water with liquid to solid (L/S) ratio of 2, 3, 6, 10, to understand the removal efficiency of chlorine and sulphate, as well as its consequent ability as alkaline activator for granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). Washed MSWIFA was blended with GGBFS at a fixed ratio of 3:7 to examine their impact on mechanical properties, reaction mechanism, microstructure and leaching behavior. The results showed that chlorine in MSWIFA (>70%) can be washed out easily, while the removal of sulphate was largely depended on the L/S. GGBFS can be better activated by a low L/S (e.g. 2) washed-MSWIFA with attaining the compressive strength of 45.2MPa at 28 days. The higher chlorine and sulphate contents retained in the washed-MSWIFA, the higher the total heat release in the activated GGBFS system. Calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H), ettringite (AFt) and Friedel’s salt were the main hydration products of the activated binders. The rapid formation of AFt was mainly responsible for the 1-day strength development. Large amounts of Friedel’s salts were formed from 1 day to 3 days associated to the inhibition of sulphate, and the presence of C–S–H played the key role in long-term strength development. The leaching test of heavy metals and soluble ions also demonstrated that washed MSWIFA activated GGBFS binders were harmless to the environment.

Excessive nutrient balance is a very crucial issue for environmental hazards. The constant addition of high-amounts of nutrient sources in agricultural production generates negative environmental conditions in Korea and Japan yet to be resolved. Therefore, it is obligatory to comprehend the nutrient (nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)) balance that is assessed by the difference between nutrient input and output in the soil surface in Korea and Japan. Among 34 Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, Korea and Japan had the highest N and P balances and thus both countries are primarily responsible for severe environmental pollution via nutrient release. The cultivable land area in both countries has constantly decreased during 1990–2017 at approximately 20 and 15% in Korea and Japan, respectively. Even N and P use efficiency sharply decreased with increasing N and P balance in both targeted countries. Japanese P balance, Korean N and P balances were decreased after the mid-1990s whereas, Japanese N balance almost unchanged for the last 28 years. Unlike chemical fertilizer input, Korean manure input level significantly increased from 78 kg N ha⁻¹ in 1990 to 157 kg N ha⁻¹ in 2017. Japanese manure input level was higher than that of chemical fertilizer without any big change for the last 28 years. The lion share of high N and P balance in both countries could generate from manure inputs, therefore, the number of livestock and their produced debris need to be used with more cautious for the reduction of national N and P surpluses at a benchmark level. These findings ensure to make a more environment friendly policy that can further reduce nutrient balance as well as improve soil health.

Critical loads are thresholds of atmospheric deposition below which harmful ecological effects do not occur. Because lichens are sensitive to atmospheric deposition, lichen-based critical loads can foreshadow changes of other forest processes. Here, we derive critical loads of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) deposition for continental US and coastal Alaskan forests, based on nationally consistent lichen community surveys at 8855 sites. Across the eastern and western US ranges of 459 lichen species, each species' realized optimum was the N or S atmospheric deposition value at which it most frequently occurred. The mean of optima for all species at a site, weighted by their abundances, was defined as a community “airscore” indicative of species’ collective responses to atmospheric deposition. To determine critical loads for adverse community compositional shifts, we then modeled changes in airscores as a function of deposition, climate and forest habitat predictors in nonparametric multiplicative regression. Critical loads, indicative of initial shifts from pollution-sensitive toward pollution-tolerant species, occurred at 1.5 kg N ha⁻¹ y⁻¹ and 2.7 kg S ha⁻¹ y⁻¹. Importantly, these critical loads remain constant under any climate regime nationwide, suggesting both simplicity and nationwide applicability. Our models predict that preventing excess N deposition of just 0.2–2.0 kg ha⁻¹ y⁻¹ in the next century could offset the detrimental effects of predicted climate warming on lichen communities. Because excess deposition and climate warming both harm the most ecologically influential species, keeping conditions below critical loads would sustain both forest ecosystem functioning and climate resilience.

The enantioselective toxic effect and environmental behavior of chiral pesticides have attracted increasing research attention. In this study, the enantioselective toxicity and residues of hexaconazole (HEX) in earthworms (Eisenia fetida) were investigated. In the present study, significant enantioselective degradation characteristics were observed in artificial soil with the R-enantiomer preferentially degrading (p < 0.05); however, no significant enantioselective bioaccumulation was observed in the earthworms (p > 0.05). The acute toxicity of S-(+)-HEX was higher than that of R-(−)-HEX in earthworms, with 48-h LC₅₀ values of 8.62 and 22.35 μg/cm², respectively. At 25 mg/kg, enantiospecific induction of oxidative stress was observed in earthworms; moreover, S-(+)-HEX had a greater influence on the contents of malonaldehyde, cytochrome P450, and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine than R-(−)-HEX. These results were consistent with those of the enrichment analysis of differentially expressed genes. The transcriptome sequencing results showed that S-(+)-HEX had a more significant influence on steroid biosynthesis, arachidonic acid metabolism, and cell cycle processes than R-(−)-HEX, leading to abnormal biological function activities. These results indicate that S-(+)-HEX may pose a higher risk to soil organisms than R-(−)-HEX. This study suggests that the environmental risk of chiral pesticides to nontarget organisms should be assessed at the enantiomeric level.

In this study, the occurrence of aflatoxins (AFs), fumonisins (FBs), ochratoxin A (OTA), deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEN) and some of their metabolites were assessed in breast milk and urine of lactating women (N = 74) from Pirassununga, São Paulo, Brazil. Exposure estimations through urinary mycotoxin biomarkers was also performed. Samples were collected in four sampling times (May and August 2018, February and July 2019) and analyzed by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. Aflatoxin M₁ (AFM₁) was not detected in breast milk. However, two samples (3%) presented FB₁ at 2200 and 3400 ng/L, while 4 samples (5%) had OTA at the median level of 360 ng/L. In urine, AFM₁ and aflatoxin P₁ (AFP₁) were found in 51 and 11% of samples, respectively (median levels: 0.16 and 0.07 ng/mg creatinine, respectively). Urinary DON (median level: 38.59 ng/mg creatinine), OTA (median level: 2.38 ng/mg creatinine) and ZEN (median level: 0.02 ng/mg of creatinine) were quantified in 18, 8 and 10% of the samples, respectively. Mean probable daily intake (PDI) values based on urinary biomarkers were 1.58, 1.09, 5.07, and 0.05 μg/kg body weight/day for AFM₁, DON, OTA, and ZEN, respectively. Although a low mycotoxin occurrence was detected in breast milk, the PDI for the genotoxic AFs was much higher than those reported previously in Brazil, while PDI values obtained for OTA and DON were higher than recommended tolerable daily intakes. These outcomes warrant concern on the exposure of lactating women to these mycotoxins in the studied area.

Urban activities intensify air pollution by increasing the amount of particulate matter (PM). The trees collect PM by adsorption on the leaf surface and simultaneously absorb inorganic components. In this research, we investigated the potential of the black pine as bioindicator of road traffic emissions in Cluj-Napoca (Romania). We defined three sites types with different exposure to the road traffic (streets, outskirts, parks) and a control site far from the city. We quantified 17 inorganic components (Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Sr, Zn) by MP-AES (microwave-plasma atomic emission spectroscopy) technique in the one-year-old needles and we identified the best candidates for biomonitoring purposes. The concentration of Ba, Cr, Cu and Fe showed the most sensitive variations with the road traffic intensity. While in the streets the Ba, Cu and Fe increased by 2.8–3.5 times in relation to the control site, the Cr varied in the highest degree exhibiting ratios of 2.2 (parks), 3.3 (outskirts) and 6.3 (streets). The success of these elements lies in several characteristics: they are closely related to non-exhaust emissions, they are readily absorbed through the leaves rather than the roots, and they tend to accumulate in the needles instead of being relocated to other organs. The street maintenance activities caused considerable accumulation of Na in the trees from the roadsides, but had no impact over the trees from the parks. The elements originating mainly in the re-suspended urban dust (Ni, Pb, Sr) equally affected the pines from the streets and parks.

The reduction of NOₓ emissions in a VOC-limited region can lead to an increase of the local O₃ concentration. An evaluation of the net health effects of such pollutant changes is therefore important to ascertain whether the emission control measures effectively improve the overall protection of public health. In this study, we use a short-term health risk (added health risk or AR) model developed for the multi-pollutant air quality health index (AQHI) in Hong Kong to examine the overall health impacts of these pollutant changes. We first investigate AR changes associated with NO₂ and O₃ changes, followed by those associated with changes in all four AQHI pollutants (NO₂, O₃, SO₂, and particulate matter (PM)). Our results show that for the combined health effects of NO₂ and O₃ changes, there is a significant reduction in AR in urban areas with dense traffic, but no statistically significant changes in other less urbanized areas. The increase in estimated AR for higher O₃ concentrations is offset by a decrease in the estimated AR for lower NO₂ concentrations. In areas with dense traffic, the reduction in AR as a result of decreased NO₂ is substantially larger than the increase in AR associated with increased O₃. When additionally accounting for the change in ambient SO₂ and PM, we found a statistically significant reduction in total AR everywhere in Hong Kong. Our results show that the emission control measures resulting in NO₂, SO₂, and PM reductions over the past decade have effectively reduced the AR over Hong Kong, even though these control measures may have partially contributed to an increase in O₃ concentrations. Hence, efforts to reduce NOx, SO₂, and PM should be continued.

Seafood is the main source of methylmercury (MeHg) exposure for humans and elevated total mercury (Hg) concentrations have been reported in marine fish from Norwegian fjords compared with offshore areas. Hg in tusk fillets (n = 201) and liver samples (n = 177) were measured in individuals from different habitats including offshore, coastal area, outer and inner Sognefjord. Specifically, the effects of habitat, energy sources and trophic complexity on Hg bioaccumulation pathways in tusk (Brosme brosme) were investigated using stable isotopes of carbon (δ¹³C) and nitrogen (δ¹⁵N). The concentrations of Hg in tusk increased from offshore towards inner Sognefjord. While Hg concentrations in sediment were at background levels, tusk fillet samples from 7 of 8 sites in Sognefjord had higher Hg levels than the maximum level set by European Union. Based on these findings, human consumption advice for tusk from Sognefjord was issued by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority. δ¹³C values in tusk successfully discriminated individuals from different habitats and were positively correlated to Hg concentrations in tusk across individuals, sites and habitats, outlining the potential importance of terrestrial carbon and most likely the atmospheric deposition of Hg from the catchment to the overall Hg bioaccumulation and exposure regime in tusk. Additionally, we postulate that the effects of terrestrial carbon sources increased towards inner Sognefjord and likely influenced Hg bioavailability throughout the food web. In contrast, δ¹⁵N values were patchy throughout the fjord system and although trophic position explained some of the Hg variation between individual fish, it was not correlated with Hg variation across sites and habitats. Our results suggest that tusk can accumulate high levels of Hg in fjord ecosystems and that catchment runoff is likely an important driver of Hg bioaccumulation in this species.

Hydrophobic microplastics with a relatively large surface area can act as carriers for pollutants and exert a series of indirect effects on crop plants. This study investigated the toxic effects of small polystyrene (SPS, 100–1000 nm) and large polystyrene (LPS, >10,000 nm) microplastics, on lettuce under di-butyl phthalate (DBP) stress. The results indicated that single SPS, LPS, and DBP treatments significantly decreased lettuce biomass, and induced oxidative stress and damaged lettuce leaves and roots. According to Gaussian analysis, SPS or LPS could interact with DBP through van der Waals force, thereby reducing lettuce biomass and DBP enrichment in roots and leaves under combined treatments, increasing antioxidant enzyme activities and exacerbating oxidative stress and subcellular damage, compared to single DBP treatments. Observation using scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that polystyrene (PS) adhered to the root surfaces, which, in turn, caused physical blockage of the root pores. Cell membrane and wall damage was observed during PS and/or DBP exposures, as identified by transmission electron microscopy. Molecular docking illustrated that DBP and monobutyl phthalate could interact with superoxide dismutase residues through hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, alkyl conjugation, and van der Waals forces. Interestingly, there were no statistical differences between the phytotoxicity of nano- and microplastics to lettuce. These findings showed that PS aggravated DBP-induced phytotoxicity.
