This paper describes a study that was aimed at optimizing the pelletization of fecal sludge-based fertilizers for agricultural use. The process developed is easy to implement and increases the marketability of the products while also addressing a serious health and environmental challenge. The study took place during the period 2011-2012 in Ghana. The fecal sludge, rich in nutrients and organic matter, was dried and used to produce five different fertilizers (i.e., four formulations of compost and one with gamma irradiated material). Each material was then pelletized using locally constructed machinery. Key operating parameters, such as moisture content (10-55% in mass), binder type (clay or starch) and concentration (0-10% in mass), were varied and their impacts on the characteristics of pellets (e.g., amount of fine materials generated, length distribution or stability of pellets, and pellet disintegration rate) were also followed. Given the low analyzing capabilities of developing countries, some simple analytical methods were developed and used to compare pellets produced under different conditions. The results confirmed that the addition of 3% of pregelatinized starch is recommended during pelletization of fecal sludge-based fertilizers. Applicable moisture contents were also identified per fertilizer type, and were found to comprise between 21 and 43%.

The triazole fungicide epoxiconazole is extensively used to control fungi on crops and may present some potential risk from runoff on coastal ecosystems located close to agricultural areas. Phytotoxicity assessments were conducted on the marine diatom Chaetoceros calcitrans using both the active ingredient and its formulated product (Opus). The 3-day EC50 using cell count was 2.31 mg/L for epoxiconazole active ingredient and 2.9 mu g/L for epoxiconazole-formulated. The fungicide produced an increase of cellular volume, pigment (chlorophylls a, c, and carotenoids) content, ATP synthesis, and rates of photosynthesis and respiration. Progressive algal cell recovery from epoxiconazole effects occurred after 3 days, with the increasing cell density. Differences in cell age, light, and nutrient composition induced changes in epoxiconazole sensitivity. Since these parameters affect cellular division rates, the cellular density is an important parameter in toxicity tests.

In recent decades, many toxicological tests based on in vivo or in vitro models, mainly from mammalian (rat-mouse) and fish species, were used to assess the risks raised by contact or ingestion of molecules of pharmaceutical, agricultural, or natural origin. But no, or few, in vitro tests using other non-mammalian models such as bird have been explored despite their advantages: the embryonic gonads of birds have a high plasticity of development sensitive to estrogen, and sperm production is nearly two times faster than in rodents. Hence, we have established an in vitro culture of germ cells and somatic cells from chicken post-natal testis, and we have evaluated the sensitivity against the endocrine disruptor compound mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) in comparison to previous studies using rodent and human models. After 96 h of exposure in presence of 10 μM MEHP, chicken seminiferous tubules cultures present a structural alteration, a reduction in cell proliferation and in germ cells population. Apoptosis of germ and somatic cells increases in presence of 1 μM MEHP. Furthermore, MEHP does not affect inhibin B and lactate production by Sertoli cells. These results are in accordance with previous studies using rat, mice, or human culture of testicular cells and in similar range of exposures or even better sensitivity for some "end-points" (biological parameters). In conclusion, the establishment of this postnatal testicular cells culture could be considered as an alternative method to in vivo experiments frequently used for evaluating the impact on the terrestrial wildlife species. This method could be also complementary to mammal model due to the limiting number of animals used and its elevated sensitivity.

International audience | Accumulated sediments in a 32,000-m3 detention basin linked to a separate stormwater system were characterized in order to infer their health hazards. A sampling scheme of 15 points was defined according to the hydrological behaviour of the basin. Physical parameters (particle size and volatile organic matter content) were in the range of those previously reported for stormwater sediments. Chemical analyses on hydrocarbons, PAHs, PCBs and heavy metals showed high pollutant concentrations. Microbiological analyses of these points highlighted the presence of faecal indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) and actinomycetes of the genus Nocardia. These are indicative of the presence of human pathogens. E. coli and enterococcal numbers in the sediments were higher at the proximity of the low-flow gutter receiving waters from the catchment. These bacteria appeared to persist over time among urban sediments. Samples highly contaminated by hydrocarbons were also shown to be heavily contaminated by these bacteria. These results demonstrated for the first time the presence of Nocardial actinomycetes in such an urban context with concentrations as high as 11,400 cfu g-1.

Bauman, Andrew G. | Feary, David A. | Heron, Scott F. | Pratchett, Morgan S. | Burt, John A.
Multivariate analysis revealed distinct sub-regional coral communities among the southern Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, and Gulf of Oman. Differences in community structure among locations were associated with considerable spatial heterogeneity in oceanic conditions, and strong directional environmental gradients. Despite clear community differences, considerable changes to coral community structure have occurred throughout the northeastern Arabian Peninsula as compared with previous studies. The most dramatic of these are the apparent changes from Acropora dominated to poritid and faviid dominated communities, particularly in the southern Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz. Although temperature and salinity have previously been cited as the major environmental factors structuring coral communities around the region, additional environmental parameters, including chlorophyll-a, surface currents and winds are shown to be important in structuring reef communities throughout the northeastern Arabian Peninsula.

Selenium concentrations have been measured in sediment, fucoid macroalgae and macroinvertebrates from four estuaries of SW England (Yealm, Plym, Looe, Fal). Sediment concentrations ranged from about 0.4μgg−1 in the Yealm to 1.49μgg−1 at one site in the Plym. Concentrations in Fucus vesiculosus (0.05–0.31μgg−1) and F. ceranoides (0.05–0.51μgg−1) were significantly lower than corresponding concentrations in sediment but there was no correlation between algal and sediment concentrations. Selenium concentrations in Littorina littorea (∼4μgg−1), Hediste diversicolor (2.82–12.68μgg−1), Arenicola marina (∼17μgg−1) and Scrobicularia plana (1.18–6.85μgg−1) were considerably higher than concentrations in macroalga or sediment, suggesting that Se is effectively accumulated from the diet. Although Se concentrations in some invertebrates exceed toxicity thresholds for the diet of predacious birds and fish, no specific evidence for Se toxicity exists in these estuaries.

Suspended particles (SP) are increasing dramatically in Bohai Bay, China and may affect the growth and composition of phytoplankton assembly. To determine the effects of SP on the growth of two dominant phytoplankton species, Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin and Gymnodinium sp., we cultured and tested their growth characteristics under SP concentrations ranging from 0gL−1 to 0.8gL−1. Our results show that the increase in the SP concentrations results in significant decrease in the maximum cell densities and the maximum specific growth rates of these two species. The half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of SP to P. tricornutum and Gymnodinium sp. were 1.07gL−1 and 0.68gL−1 respectively, indicating the inhibitory effect of SP on Gymnodinium sp. was greater than on P. tricornutum. These results suggest that SP inhibits the growth of the two algal species and P. tricornutum is more tolerant to SP than Gymnodinium sp.

Jones, H.J. | Butler, E.C.V. | Macleod, C.K.
Selenium’s (Se) protective effects against mercury (Hg) toxicity have been demonstrated; however, this is seldom considered in health assessments, where dietary exposure is still evaluated by Hg concentration alone. Se:Hg ratios and selenium health benefit values (Se HBVs) offer a more comprehensive seafood safety model. Here we describe total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg) and Se concentrations in fish from a Hg-polluted estuary. Spatial variation in THg, MeHg and Se was evident, though all regions maintained Se:Hg ratio values >1. Se HBV varied between regions and in one region mean negative values (−5.17) were evident. This study provides the first evidence that quoting a single all-encompassing Se HBV is not appropriate when species demonstrate strong site fidelity. It highlights the need for research into Se–Hg relationships in environments with established Hg pollution and reinforces the assertion that Se concentration be considered in assessments of human health risk to Hg exposure.

Gallon, R.K. | Ysnel, F. | Feunteun, E.
This study compared 2 standardized protocols to monitor subtidal rocky shores. We tested 2 sampling methods (temporal unit and quadrat) to assess the efficiency of extracting biota parameters (diversity, abundance, and biomass) of macroalgae, Mollusca, and Porifera with respect to time–cost and the number of sampling units. Species richness and occurrence of rocky subtidal habitats were better described by visual censuses than by quadrats. The same estimated richness was provided by the 2 methods. The association of a visual census and a quadrat was the most efficient way for responding to the requirements. A minimum of 5 sampling units per discrete area is recommended for accurately describing habitats. Then, we tested the sensitivity of the proposed protocol on the Bizeux Islet to study the variations of community structures according to depth and station. Based on the results, recommendations for monitoring purposes have been proposed according to European directives.

Diurnal PM2.5 samples were collected during summer and winter at an industrial complex site (site A) and an electronic waste (e–waste) recycling site (site B) in Qingyuan, South China. The concentration of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), water soluble ions (WSI) and elements were investigated for their seasonal and diurnal variations. Organic matter (OM) was the most abundant specie in winter, accounting for 40.2% and 48.8% of PM2.5 in sites A and B, respectively; while in summer, excluding the elemental portion, WSI was the biggest part, which accounted for 37% and 49.4% of PM2.5 mass in sites A and B, respectively. Significantly higher concentrations were observed for most of the analyzed chemical species in winter. Average acidity of PM2.5 at both sites was significantly higher in summer. Diurnal variation with elevated concentrations of PM2.5 in nighttime samples was found at site B. Secondary inorganic aerosols (NH4+, NO3− and SO42−) exhibited clear day–to–night variation. Concentration of SO42− was about 15% higher in daytime samples. NH4+ and NO3− co–varied in winter, but were weakly associated with each other in summer. Sites A and B samples were almost all ammonium–rich in winter, whereas the summer samples were ammonium–poor during the daytime but ammonium–rich in the night. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) model analysis showed that secondary formation, biomass burning, regional industries, coal combustion and dust had significant contribution to PM2.5. Among them, secondary formation and biomass burning together contributed approximately 50% of PM2.5 mass at both sites. Additionally e–waste recycling activities resulted in high pollution of Cu at Site B.
