Textile microfibers reaching aquatic environments: A new estimation approach Полный текст

Textile microfibers are one of the most important sources within primary microplastics. These have raised environmental concerns since its recent identification as pollutants. However, there are still no accurate models to assess their contribution to the microplastic pollution. Hence, in this study, a method to estimate the mass flow of microfibers detached from household laundry that reaches aquatic environments has been developed. The method considers a set of parameters related to the detachment of microfibers, which are, basically: (1) the detachment rate of microfibers from different textile garments, (2) the volume of laundry effluents, (3) the percentage of municipal water that has been treated, (4) the type of used-water treatment applied, and, (5) the proportion of front- versus top-loading washing machines. In this way, 0.28 million tons of microfibers per year were estimated to reach aquatic environments, which is approximately half than the last published valuation. Finally, hypothetical situations were simulated to evaluate the reduction of microfibers by the modification of some of the parameters at different levels (consumer, government entities, and industry). Thus, depending on the implanted alternatives, microfibers that reach the aquatic environments could be reduced between 30% and 65%.

Effects of contamination on aquatic organisms have been investigated and employed as biomarkers in environmental quality assessment for years. A commonly referenced aquatic organism, mollusks represent a group of major interest in toxicological studies. Both gastropods and bivalves have external mineral shells that protects their soft tissue from predation and desiccation. These structures are composed of an organic matrix and an inorganic matrix, both of which are affected by environmental changes, including exposure to hazardous chemicals. This literature review evaluates studies that propose mollusk shell alterations as biomarkers of aquatic system quality. The studies included herein show that changes to natural variables such as salinity, temperature, food availability, hydrodynamics, desiccation, predatory pressure, and substrate type may influence the form, structure, and composition of mollusk shells. However, in the spatial and temporal studies performed in coastal waters around the world, shells of organisms sampled from multi-impacted areas were found to differ in the form and composition of both organic and inorganic matrices relative to shells from less contaminated areas. Though these findings are useful, the toxicological studies were often performed in the field and were not able to attribute shell alterations to a specific molecule. It is known that the organic matrix of shells regulates the biomineralization process; proteomic analyses of shells may therefore elucidate how different contaminants affect shell biomineralization. Further research using approaches that allow a clearer distinction between shell alterations caused by natural variations and those caused by anthropogenic influence, as well as studies to identify which molecule is responsible for such alterations or to determine the ecological implications of shell alterations, are needed before any responses can be applied universally.

Smoke from plastic waste incineration in an open air travels worldwide and is a major source of air pollution particulate matter (PM) that is very withstand to degradation and hazard to human health. Suspension of smoke aerosol components in water occurs during rains and fire extinguishing. Here, water-suspended plastic smoke aerosol (WPS) preparations suitable for biotesting were synthesized. It has been revealed using dynamic light scattering that WPS contained major nano-sized (∼30 nm) PM fraction, and this result was confirmed by electron microscopy. Optical absorption of WPS was in the UV region and an increase in λₑₓ led to a red-shift in fluorescence emission with a corresponding decrease in fluorescence intensity. WPS was analyzed in neurotoxicity studies in vitro using presynaptic rat cortex nerve terminals (synaptosomes). Generation of spontaneous reactive oxygen species (ROS) detected using fluorescent dye 2′,7-dichlorofluorescein in nerve terminals was decreased by WPS (10–50 μg/ml) in a dose-dependent manner. WPS also reduced the H₂O₂-evoked ROS production in synaptosomes, thereby influencing cellular oxidative processes and this effect was similar to that for carbon nanodots. WPS (0.1 mg/ml) decreased the synaptosomal membrane potential and synaptic vesicle acidification in fluorimetric experiments. WPS (1.0 mg/ml) attenuated the synaptosomal transporter-mediated uptake of excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters, L-[¹⁴C]glutamate and [³H]GABA, respectively. This can lead to an excessive increase in the glutamate concentration in the synaptic cleft and neurotoxicity via over activation of ionotropic glutamate receptors. Therefore, WPS was neurotoxic and provoked presynaptic malfunction through changes of oxidative activity, reduction of the membrane potential, synaptic vesicle acidification, and transporter-mediated uptake of excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters in nerve terminals. In summary, synthesis and emission to the environment of ultrafine PM occur during combustion of plastics, thereby polluting air and water resources, and possibly triggering development of neuropathologies.

Wastewater reuse in food crop irrigation has led to agroecosystem pollution concerns and human health risks. However, there is limited attention on the relationship of sub-lethal antibiotic levels in vegetables and resistance selection. Most risk assessment studies show non-significant toxicity, but overlook the link between antibiotics in crops and propagation of gut microbiome resistance selection. The review highlights the risk of antibiotics in treated water used for irrigation, uptake, and accumulation in edible vegetable parts. Moreover, it elucidates the risks to the adaptive resistance selection of the gut microbiome from sub-lethal antibiotic levels, as a result of dietary contaminated vegetables. Experiments have reported that bacterial resistance selection is possible at concentrations that are several hundred-folds lower than lethal effect levels on susceptible cells. Consequently, mutants selected at low antibiotic levels, such as those from vegetables, are fitter and more resistant compared to those selected at high concentrations. Necessary standardization, such as the development of minimum acceptable antibiotic limits allowable in food crop irrigation water, with a focus on minimum selection concentration, and not only toxicity, has been proposed. Wastewater irrigation offers environmental benefits and can contribute to food security, but it has non-addressed risks. Research gaps, future perspectives, and frameworks of mitigating the potential risks are discussed.

The study aimed to investigate temporal trends of “old” and “new” persistent halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs) in Taihu Lake, the third largest freshwater lake in China, and the associated health risks. Five fish species were consecutively collected from the lake every year during 2011–2018. HOPs including 37 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 10 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs), 19 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and 10 new brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), were measured. The results showed that all the HOPs were detected, with MCCPs and NBFRs showing the highest and lowest concentrations, respectively. The levels of SCCPs and MCCPs were several orders of magnitude higher than those of the other HOPs. There were obvious increasing trends for SCCPs, MCCPs, and hexachlorobenzene, but a decreasing trend for PBDEs. No obvious increasing or decreasing trends were observed for the other HOPs. The present study indicated that the use of NBFRs to replace PBDEs was not yet clearly observed. Fish consumption did not result in non-carcinogenic risks, but posed low carcinogenic risks, with PCBs and DDTs being the highest-risk contaminants because of historical residues. This is the first study for the temporal variations of the HOPs in the lake.

The effects of maifanite on the physiological and phytochemical process of submerged macrophytes Hydrilla verticillate (H.verticillata) were investigated for the first time in the study. The growth index: plant biomass, root length, plant height and leaf spacing, and physiological and phytochemical indexes: chlorophyll, soluble protein, malondialdehyde (MDA), peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) content and vitality of the roots of H.verticillata were tested. The results found that maifanite can significantly promote the growth of H.verticillata. The modified maifanite were more conducive to plant growth compared with the raw maifanite, and the MM1 group had the best growth promoting effect. The physiological and phytochemical indexes showed that maifanite can delay the aging process of H.verticillata (P < 0.05). The possible reasons for promoting H.verticillata growth were that maifanite can provide excellent propagation conditions for plant rhizosphere microorganisms, contains abundant major and microelements, and improve the sediment microenvironment. This study may provide a technique for the further application of maifanite in the field of ecological restoration.

Perchlorate is an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) that contaminate various foodstuffs. Exposure to perchlorate may cause severe health problems, mainly thyroid dysfunction. However, information on perchlorate contamination of consumer foods in Taiwan is limited. This study investigated perchlorate levels in 310 food samples belonging to 12 food groups collected from Taiwanese markets. A probabilistic risk assessment was conducted to assess the related exposure to Taiwanese people. Perchlorate was detected in 65% of the samples and high levels were identified in certain plant-origin, fruit, and processed food samples. A probabilistic approach was used to estimate daily dietary dose (Monte Carlo–estimated 95th percentile dietary exposure [MCS 95]) by using the Taiwan National Food Consumption database for 14 sex/age groups. The highest and lowest average daily doses (ADDs) were in the age groups of >65 years (MCS 95 = 3.60/3.90 [male/female] μg/kg bw/day) and 16–18 years (MCS 95 = 1.70/1.47 [M/F] μg/kg bw/day), respectively. The 95th percentile of the hazard index of exposure to perchlorate of all sex/age groups far exceeded the tolerable daily intake (0.3 μg/kg bw/day) and reference dose (0.7 μg/kg bw/day) set by the European Food Safety Authority and US EPA, respectively, but it was lower than the provisional maximum tolerable daily intake (10 μg/kg bw/day) suggested by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives. The intake quantity and concentrations of perchlorate from vegetables, fruits, and whole grains are the critical contributors for the ADDs and integrated risk of dietary exposure to perchlorate. Long-term exposure through diets should be considered, instead of focusing on individual EDC during dietary risk assessment in specific populations. Furthermore, cumulative risks for exposure to multiple contaminants, particularly those causing thyroid adverse effects, may be higher than that from perchlorate exposure alone.

Industrial dye effluents, which are a major wastage component that enter the natural environment, pose a significant health risk to human and aquatic life. Therefore, the effective removal of dye effluents is a major concern. Against this backdrop, in this study, a low-cost, earth-abundant, and ecofriendly ɤ-Fe₂O₃–PPy nanocomposite was prepared employing the conventional hydrothermal method. The morphology, functional groups, and elemental composition of ɤ-Fe₂O₃–PPy were characterized by XRD, SEM, XPS, and FTIR studies. Under optimized conditions, the prepared novel ɤ-Fe₂O₃–PPy nanocomposite showed a high methylene blue (MB) adsorption capacity of 464 mg/g, which is significantly higher than that of existing adsorbents such as CNTs and polymer-modified CNTs. The adsorption parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage, and ionic strength were optimized to enhance the MB adsorption capacity. The adsorption results revealed that MB is adsorbed onto the adsorbent surface via electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and chemical binding interactions. In terms of practical application, the adsorbent’s adsorption–desorption ability in conjunction with magnetic separation was investigated; the prepared ɤ-Fe₂O₃–PPy nanocomposite exhibited excellent adsorption and desorption efficiencies over more than seven adsorption–desorption cycles.

The heating of edible oils during cooking activities promotes the emissions of pollutants that have adverse impacts on the health of humans. This study investigated the evaporative emissions of fifteen (15) commonly used cooking oils. Split-plot experimental design under the response surface methodology framework was used to study singular and interaction effects of influencing parameters (temperature, volume of cooking oil and time) on cooking oil evaporation rate and pollutants emissions (i.e. Particulate matter of aerodynamic diameter ≤1 μm (PM₁.₀); ≤2.5 μm (PM₂.₅); ≤10 μm (PM₁₀); Total Suspended Particulate (TSP); Total Volatile Organic Compounds -TVOCs, and Carbon Monoxide- CO) on a groundnut oil sample that served as a case study. Obtained values of density, viscosity, kinematic viscosity, smoke, flash and fire points were; 873–917 kg/m³; 1.12–9.7 kg/ms; 2.4–3.4 m²/s; 96 -100 °C; 124–179 °C and 142–186 °C, respectively. The role of temperature as the most significant parameter influencing the rate of evaporative emissions was established. Evaporation rate and pollutants emission from unrefined samples were the highest. The restricted maximum likelihood (REML) analysis results suggested a strong relationship between the actual values and the predicted values as R-squared values obtained were greater than 0.8 for all the responses. These results suggest that minimal rates of evaporation and pollutants emission from heating cooking oils can be achieved with a high volume of the cooking oil at moderate temperature levels.

Different pH conditions have been demonstrated to affect the activities of dechlorinating populations participating in the successive dechlorination of trichloroethylene to ethylene. However, the mechanism of the effect of pH conditions on the assembly of dechlorinating populations and their relations to the structure, function, and dynamics of the microbiome are unclear. In this study, we evaluated the effects of pH on microbiomes assembled in anaerobic trichloroethylene-dechlorinating reactors under neutral (pH 7.2), acidic (pH 6.2), and alkaline (pH 8.2) conditions. The results revealed that among the reactors, the acidic reactor had the highest efficiency for dechlorination without accumulation of dechlorinated metabolites, even at high loading rates. The results of high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene indicated that the microbiomes in the 3 reactors underwent varied dynamic succession. The acidic reactor harbored a higher degree of complex microbes, dechlorinator diversity, and abundance of the Victoria subgroup of Dehalococcoides (1.2 ± 0.1 × 10⁶ cell/mL), which were approximately 10–10²-fold higher than those at neutral and alkaline conditions. The pH settings altered species–species connectivity and complexity of microbial interaction networks, with more commensal interactions in the dechlorinators of the acidic reactor. As predicted, abundances of several functional gene categories were in strong linearity with pH values, and the microbiome possessed significantly more abundant functions in the acidic reactor (P < 0.001), such as potentially stimulating hydrogen production, cobalamin synthesis, cobalt transport, transport and metabolism of amino acids and secondary metabolites, cell motility, and transcription. All results of microbiomic analyses consistently revealed the observed superior dechlorination process and suggested an association of the reductive dechlorination process with the pH-dependent microbiome. The results of this study provide a new insight into the trichloroethylene dechlorination with regards to pH, and they will be useful for improving bioremediation and management of trichloroethylene-contaminated sites.
