Forest belts and protection of surface water
2004
Ristic, R. | Letic, Lj. | Djekovic, V.(Sumarski fakultet, Beograd (Serbia and Montenegro))E-mail:ratkor@yubc.net
The role of forest belts for surface water protection has great importance in two geomorphological ambiances: plains and hilly-mountainous. Plains ambiances are concerned to regions where dominates wind erosion: Backa, Banat, Macva, sandy terrains (Deliblatska, Suboticko-Horgoska, Ramsko-Golubacka, Kladovska), spacious surfaces in surroundings of hydrosystem DTD, natural and artificial reservoirs, river beds. Hilly-mountainous ambiance is related to regions where dominates pluvial erosion: catchment areas of reservoirs for water supply south from Sava and Danube, Fruska Gora mountain and Vrsac mountains.

2004
Djordjevic, D.(Gradjevinski fakultet, Beograd (Serbia and Montenegro))
Until recently, the wetlands have been destroyed as worthless areas due to the ignorance of their role in the processes that take place in the stream corridors. The paper presents an overview of their roles in the hydrologic cycle, biogeochemical cycling and supporting biodiversity. In addition, their significance in the stream corridor preservation, protection and restoration is discussed. Both, the knowledge of their role in and their significance for the stream corridors, is essential for preventing further imprudent destruction thereof, successful planning and preparation of the stream restoration projects, and the recognition of their possible usage in satisfying human needs.

During 2003 the referent monitoring of chemical quality of surface waters and sediments in Vojvodina (Serbia, Serbia and Montenegro) was conducted as a supplement to the regular monitoring program in Vojvodina. The aim of the study was to establish the chemical quality of surface waters and sediments. It is concluded that the water quality satisfies the criteria of the 1st/2nd class according to our legislation, with the exception of a few monitoring stations which showed a slight contamination with mineral oils and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)/ With regard to contamination of sediments with PAHs, organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) the Begej-Klek monitoring station may be considered as potentially problematic as the reference values according to Dutch legislation were exceeded for three classes of pollutants.

2004
Cado, S. | Djurkovic, A. | Miletic, A. | Andrejevic, S. | Maljevic, E.(Republicki hidrometeoroloski zavod Srbije, Beograd (Serbia and Montenegro))
The examined period is characterized by small floristic variety and well advanced eutrophication process. By the phytoplankton qualitative analysis it has been noted the domination of Bacillariophyta algal division. The values of density on phytoplankton population and their biomass show the domination of bluegreen algae, before each other, that of the species Gomphosphaeria lacustris Chod. As the consequence of the eutrophication, these algae develop intensively, up to the degree of water blossoming. The very high concentrations of the primary and secondary nutrients have also been noted. The trophic status of the reservoir on the basis of OECD classification can be defined as eutrophic.

The paper presents the results of the water quality studies of the Sava river in Belgrade region (Serbia and Montenegro). The investigations were performed in June and September, 2003. The sampling area covered five locations along the 61.5 km of the river course. Studies included the qualitative, quantitative and saprobiological investigations of plankton and macrozoobenthic communities. The bioindicator analysis points to the presence of mild organic pollution indicating thus 2nd and 3rd-2nd class of water quality.

2004
Nemes, K. | Jovanovic, I. | Bokorov, M. | Matavulj, M.(Prirodno-matematicki fakultet, Novi Sad (Serbia and Montenegro). Departman za biologiju i ekologiju)
In this paper we have presented the results of the investigations of phytoplankton carried out in the river Old Begey, from April 2003 till February 2004. The presence of 116 algal taxa of which 10 Cyanobacteria, 20 Euglenophyta, 50 Bacillariophyceae, 3 Chrysophyceae, 30 Chlorophyta and 3 Dinophyta was recorded. In the river Old Begey some rarer brackish species Entomoneis alata and Bacillaria paradoxa have also been found. The index of saprobity given on the basis of Pantle-Buck method indicated that the quality of water of the river Old begey belonged to beta-alfa-mesosaprobic category.

One of major direction of algology development in Serbia is completing data about bioindicating values for saprobic system based on the existing list of bioindicators. This work shows the results of several year's investigation of macroalgae in streams that belong to the Danube river watershed. Altogether, 72 taxa belonging to six divisions were found in the investigated streams. They were as follows: Cyanophyta (34 taxa), Rhodophyta (8), Xanthophyta (6), Chrysophyta (1), Chlorophyta (22) and Charophyta (1). Analysis of the list of species found in streams of highland regions of Serbia and the List of Indicatory Species reveals that 50% (36) of the species found have definite indicatory values. This work presents the data obtained for species that are not on the existing lists of indicators.

This paper presents general characteristics of water source Mareza, which has been used for water supply of the town of Podgorica, as well as potential risks that can affect water quality of this source. Measures for the source protection in order to maintain existing high quality of the source water are presented.

2004
Vukanic, D. | Vukanic, V.(Institut za biologiju mora, Kotor (Serbia and Montenegro))E-mail:vukanic@yahoo.com
Studies of the plankton copepods also included the area of continental shelf and the Southern Adriatic deep valley with pronounced ocean characteristics. The deep waters of Southern Adriatic are inhabited by numerous species of all depth zones, with a pronounced domination of ocean forms, similar to the Mediterranean. The quantity of copepods in the area of open surface waters shows a pronounced spring maximum of abundance. The abundance of overall copepod population decreases from the shore toward the open sea of Southern Adriatic valley, with an increase of species abundance in plankton. That area is governed by stenothermal and stenohaline conditions. The Copepoda community is characterized by stenothermic and stenohaline species. Ranges of many of these are not increased horizontally toward the northern parts of Adriatic, and the individuals carried north by water currents quickly die.

The paper presents the results of a pilot study of the combined process of ozonation and filtration through biologically activated carbon to remove residual organic matter in the process of drinking water production. It was established that the application of these procedures resulted in the removal in average of 74% PB, 50% TOC, 60% of total aldehydes, and 54% PFTHM, the result being a consequence of the adsorption/biosorption processes involved.
