Microbial mercury (Hg) methylation transforms inorganic mercury to neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) mainly in aquatic anoxic environments. Sampling challenges in marine ecosystems, particularly in submarine canyons, leads to a lack of knowledge about the Hg methylating microbia in marine sediments. A previous study showed an enrichment of mercury species in sediments from the Capbreton Canyon where both geochemical parameters and microbial activities constrained the net MeHg production. In order to characterize Hg-methylating microbial communities from coastal to deeper sediments, we analysed the diversity of microorganisms’ (16S rDNA-based sequencing) and Hg methylators (hgcA based cloning and sequencing). Both, 16S rDNA and hgcA gene analysis demonstrated that the putative Hg-methylating prokaryotes were likely within the Deltaproteobacteria, dominated by sulfur-compounds based reducing bacteria (mainly sulfate reducers). Additionally, others clades were also identified as carrying HgcA gene, such as, Chloroflexi, Spirochaetes, Elusimicrobia, PVC superphylum (Plantomycetes, Verrucomicrobia and Chlamydiae) and Euryarchaea. Nevertheless, 61% of the hgcA sequences were not assigned to specific clade, indicating that further studies are needed to understand the implication of new microorganisms carrying hgcA in the Hg methylation in marine environments. These first results suggest that sulfur cycle drives the Hg-methylation in marine ecosystem.

The pollution of aquatic bodies by pharmaceutical compounds is an emerging environmental problem, with little explored consequences. Oxytetracycline (OTC) is an antibiotic used for treatment of infections caused by a variety of microorganisms and it is widely employed in medicine, livestock husbandry and aquaculture. This pharmaceutical compound may cause deleterious effects on non-target aquatic organisms as microalgae. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of OTC on growth, pigment content and morpho-physiology of the microalga Isochrysis galbana Parke. The results highlighted that OTC exposure inhibited the growth of I. galbana in cultures treated with OTC 5.0 and 10.0 mg/L after 3 days and in cultures treated with OTC 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 mg/L after 5 days. Effects of OTC on cells ultrastructure and physiology consisted in large cytoplasmic lipid inclusions and in a decrease of photosynthetic pigments amount.

Little is known about fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure among pregnant women in rural China. This study aims to characterize exposure to PM2.5 among pregnant women in rural China, and investigate potential risk factors of personal exposure to PM2.5. The data were obtained from a birth cohort study that enrolled 606 pregnant women in Xuanwei, a county known for its high rates of lung cancer. The personal exposure to PM2.5 was measured using small portable particulate monitors during each trimester of pregnancy. Participants were interviewed using structured questionnaires that sought information on risk factors of PM2.5 exposure. The daily exposure to PM2.5 among the pregnant women ranged from 19.68 to 97.08 μg/m3 (median = 26.08). Exposure to PM2.5 was higher in winter and autumn than other seasons (p < 0.05); higher during the day than during the night (p < 0.001); and greater during cooking hours than during the rest of the day (p < 0.001). Using a mixed effects model, domestic solid fuel for cooking (β = 1.75, p < 0.001), winter and autumn (β = 2.96, p < 0.001), cooking ≥ once per day (β = 1.58, p < 0.05), heating with coal (β = 1.69, p < 0.001), secondhand smoke exposure (β = 1.59, p < 0.001) and township 1(β = 2.39, p < 0.001) were identified as risk factors for personal exposure to PM2.5 of pregnant women throughout pregnancy. Indirect effects of season and township factors on personal PM2.5 exposure were mediated by heating, cooking and domestic fuel using. In conclusion, PM2.5 levels in Xuanwei exceeded WHO guidelines. Seasonal and township factors and individual behaviors like domestic solid fuel using for cooking, heating with coal and secondhand smoke exposure are associated with higher personal PM2.5 exposure among pregnant women in rural China.

Riverbed sediments are the interface layer in riverine ecosystems connecting the overlying medium of water and the vadose zone. The transport behavior of phosphorus (P), which has been recognized as the primary cause of freshwater eutrophication, in riverbed sediments remains unclear. Understanding the impact of riverbed sediments on P transport is a necessary prerequisite for the development of appropriate strategies to reduce potential groundwater pollution. In this study, riverbed sediments were collected from the upstream, midstream, and downstream sections of the Beiyun River, China, and packed into vertical soil columns to perform leaching experiments to quantify P transport characteristics. In addition, the impact mechanisms were further explored by conducting laboratory batch tests of P adsorption and desorption. The results demonstrated that approximately 80% of P can be adsorbed by riverbed sediments in soil column leaching experiment, and a tailing phenomenon was observed in its desorption. The hydraulic conductivity properties of riverbed sediments were evaluated by the advection-dispersion equation, showing a gradually decreasing adsorption capacity for P from upstream to downstream sections, which was supported by the results obtained from adsorption–desorption thermodynamic and kinetic batch tests. The estimated annual leaching masses of P increased from 60.72 g/(m² a) in the upstream section to 132.31 g/(m² a) in the downstream section. The role of riverbed sediments as a source or sink of P is possibly determined by their coarse sand particles content, and the mean equilibrium P concentration (EPC0). The competitive relationship between P and other forms of nutrients also has an important influence on its source-sink role. These findings suggest that the prevention of the potential P leaching is most needed in the downstream sections of Beiyun River, and corresponding control strategies should be developed to avoid groundwater pollution.

The traditional assessment of agricultural soil remediation technologies pay limited attention to sustainability and only considers the decrease in contaminant concentrations and cost, even though the sustainability of these technologies has been prioritized. This 3-year field study comprehensively assessed the sustainability of four commonly used agricultural soil remediation technologies in terms of metal(loid) removal efficiency, environmental merit, and cost. The farmland was contaminated by previous sewage irrigation with excessive amounts of As, Cd, and Pb. The four selected remediation technologies used were phytoextraction, intercropping of hyperaccumulators and cash crops, chemical immobilization, and turnover and attenuation (T&A). A risk reduction–environmental merit–cost model was utilized to compare these four technologies. Results showed that T&A reduced the health risks posed by excess metal(loid)s by ∼47% and yielded the highest risk reduction and lowest cost. Phytoextraction achieved the highest environmental merit because it produced the least interruption to the environment. A simplified assessment frame for soil remediation technology was established from a retrospective aspect using data from a real soil remediation project. Environmental merit is a less considered factor and more difficult to quantify than risk reduction or cost, thus requiring increased attention.

Membrane concentrated landfill leachate (MCLL) contains large amounts of recalcitrant organic matter that cause potential hazards to the environment. Knowledge on the compositional variation of MCLL during treatment is important for a better understanding on the degradation pathway of organic pollutants. In this work, the structural change of MCLL during Fenton oxidation process was examined using spectroscopic techniques. The removal rates of COD, TOC and UV254 reached 78.9 ± 1.3%, 70.2 ± 1.4% and 90.64 ± 1.6%, respectively, under the optimal condition (i.e., dosage of H2O2 = 9.0 mL/200 mL, H2O2/Fe(II) molar ratio = 3.0, pH = 3.0, time = 40 min). Spectral analyses suggested that aromatic/CC structure and CO bonds in MCLL can be successfully destroyed by Fenton oxidation, resulting in a decrease in molecular weight. One fulvic-like and one humic-like components were identified in MCLL, both of which can be removed by Fenton treatment. In addition, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopic analyses suggested the oxidative changes of MCLL structure in the order of fulvic-like component/unsaturated conjugated bond > aromatic structure > humic-like component. The results may provide a new insight to the understanding on the structure variation of MCLL during treatment, which is beneficial for the design of cost-effective treatment strategies.

Psychoactive substances are becoming a new concern in aquatic environment along with the increase in use of these substances. In this study, 23 psychoactive substances were investigated in the tap water collected in 63 sites in China. Eighteen out of 23 psychoactive substances were detected at the range of < method detection limits (MDLs) to 24.9 ng L-1. It was found that diazepam and temazepam were the major psychoactive substances in the tap water with the median concentration of 1.0 and 0.06 ng L⁻¹, respectively. The high exposure dose for each psychoactive substance was calculated from 0.6 to 855 pg kg⁻¹ bw d⁻¹ and showed an order of men ≥ boys ≥ girls ≥ women. Risk assessment revealed there was little risk of psychoactive substances on human health at current residual levels.

Present study reports the laboratory and field scale application of different organic and inorganic amendments to immobilize cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in a co-contaminated alluvial paddy soil. For that purpose, lime, biochar, Fe-biochar and two composite amendments (CA) composed of biochar, lime, sepiolite and zeolite (CA1: composite amendment 1) and manure, lime and sepiolite (CA2: composite amendment 2) were firstly tested in an incubation experiment to ameliorate Cd and Pb co-contaminated alluvial soil. It was observed that liming and CA2 elevated the soil pH and reduced DTPA extractable Cd and Pb in the incubated soil leading to higher metal immobilization. Therefore, efficiency of lime and CA2 was further investigated in field conditions with mid rice as the test crop to evaluate field scale immobilization and precise application rate for the tested soil type. DTPA and CaCl₂ extractable Cd (46 and 51%) and Pb (68 and 70%) in field soil were decreased with applied treatments. Speciation of Cd and Pb also promoted conversion of metal exchangeable contents to less-available forms. Activated functional groups on amendments’ surface (_OH bonding, C_O and CO, -O-H, Si–O–Si, carboxylic and ester groups) sequestered metals by precipitation, adsorption, ion exchange or electro static attributes. Application of lime at 2400 kg/acre (T4) and CA2 at 1200 kg/acre was more effective in reducing rice shoot and grains metal contents. Moreover, obtained results in terms of pH, extractable content, speciation and yield, and microanalysis of amendments highlights the remarkable efficiency of lime and composite amendment to sorb Cd and Pb providing the key evidence of these amendments for metals immobilization and environmental remediation. Considering these results, lime and CA2 are potential amendments for co-contaminated rice field especially in context of alluvial soil.

Mcr-1 and blaNDM₋₁ antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) confer resistance to colistins and carbapenems, which are often antibiotics used as a last resort in tertiary care hospitals. Dissemination of these two ARGs in drinking water supply systems and their effect on healthy gut bacteria are poorly studied. In this study, the dissemination of mcr-1 and blaNDM₋₁ in a drinking water supply system, and their effect on the antibiotic resistance of mouse gut bacteria are explored.Metagenome analysis revealed that source water (Taipu river and Jinze reservoir) was polluted with ARGs. Mcr-1 and blaNDM₋₁ can be disseminated through the water distribution system. Even advanced water treatments (ozone and biological activated carbon (BAC)) could not effectively remove mcr-1 and blaNDM₋₁. Low concentrations of chloramine disinfectants in the water distribution system were not effective at limiting ARG abundance. Mobile genetic elements were also found to play a major role in the dissemination of ARGs via horizontal gene transfer (HGT) throughout the water supply system. Statistical analysis revealed that there was no effect of temperature on the abundance of mcr-1 and blaNDM₋₁ throughout the water supply system.A last resort ARG, mcr-1 can disseminate from drinking water to the healthy mouse gut. The presence of mcr-1 in a strain belonging to Enterococcus hirae, which is different from the strain belonging to the Bacillus cereus group isolated from drinking water, strongly supports the phenomena of HGT inside the gut. This research provides novel insights into the role of drinking water in disseminating ARGs to the gut and strongly suggests that drinking water may also play a major role apart from other factors known to be involved in the prevalence of last resort ARGs in the gut.

One emerging problem that recently has become a vastly acknowledged topic of concern is the environmental contamination by pharmaceuticals. Diclofenac (DCF) is one of the most common pharmaceuticals found, due to its high utilization and low removal rate in wastewater treatment processes. In this work, Solanum lycopersicum L. was used as a model to unravel how DCF contamination can affect crops, focusing on the internal mechanisms triggered by this exposure. For this purpose, plants were exposed to two different DCF concentrations (0.5 mg L⁻¹ and 5 mg L⁻¹). Results obtained here point towards a loss of shoot performance when plants were exposed to very high concentrations of DCF, but no delay or loss of yield in the flowering and fruit stages were ascribed to DCF contamination. Our data shows that a state of oxidative stress due to high reactive oxygen species accumulation was associated with this contamination, with very high DCF levels leading to a rise of lipid peroxidation, possibly accentuated by the inhibition of ROS-scavenging enzymes and unable to be counteracted by the visible upregulation of proline and the thiol-based redox network. Overall, these results allow to infer that in the current environmental context, no noticeable negative effects should be associated with the presence of DCF in soils where this crop is cultivated. However, the oxidative stress and lower biomass associated with the highest concentration are alarming, since DCF levels in the environment are continuously increasing and further measures are necessary to assess this problematic.
