2020
Strady, Emilie | Kieu-Le, Thuy-Chung | Gasperi, Johnny | Tassin, Bruno
Anthropogenic fibers, gathering synthetic fibers, artificial fibers and natural fibers are ubiquitous in the natural environment. Tremendous concentrations of anthropogenic fibers were previously measured in the tropical Saigon River (Vietnam), i.e. a river impacted by textile and apparel industries. In the present study, we want to examine the role of contrasted seasonal variation (e.g., dry and rainy seasons), via the rainfall and monthly water discharges, and of water's physico-chemical conditions on the concentrations of anthropogenic fibers in the surface water. The one year and half monthly survey evidenced that concentrations of anthropogenic fibers varied from 22 to 251 items L⁻¹ and their variations were not related to rainfall, water discharge or abiotic factors. However, their color and length distribution varied monthly suggesting variations in sources and sinks. Based on the 2017 survey, we estimated an annual emission of anthropogenic fibers from the river to the downstream coastal zone of 115–164 × 10¹² items yr⁻¹.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are used in specialty/functional textiles to impart oil, water, and stain repellency. Little is known, however, with regard to the occurrence of PFASs in textiles including infant clothing. In this study, 13 perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), comprising four perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs; C4–C10) and nine perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs; C4–C12) were determined in 160 textile samples collected from the United States. Two extraction methods, one involving a simple solvent extraction (i.e., before oxidation) and the other with an oxidative treatment (i.e., after oxidation) of textile extracts, were used. The sum concentrations of 13 PFAAs (i.e., ∑PFAA) in textile extracts before oxidation ranged from <LOD to 63.7 μg/m² (<LOD–285 ng/g), with a mean value of 3.18 μg/m² (14.2 ng/g). ∑PFAA concentrations were the highest in flame retarded textiles (n = 23; mean: 13.3 μg/m²; 59.4 ng/g), followed by water repellent textiles (n = 56; 2.88 μg/m²; 12.9 ng/g) and infant clothes (n = 81; 0.521 μg/m²; 2.33 ng/g). C4–C10 PFCAs accounted for at least three-quarters of the ∑PFAA content in our textile samples. Textile extracts analyzed after oxidative treatment exhibited ∑PFAA concentrations 10-fold higher than those in extracts analyzed prior to oxidation, which suggested that PFAA precursors are used in textiles. Precursors that generated C4–C5 PFCAs, upon oxidation, were more prevalent than those that yielded PFOA. The calculated dermal exposure doses in infants of PFAAs present in clothes were at least 1–2 orders of magnitude below the reference doses proposed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. This is the first time that the oxidative treatment was applied in the analysis of PFASs in textiles, and our results suggest the existence of PFCA precursors in textiles.

Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition is believed to accelerate dissolved organic carbon (DOC) production and could lead to increased heavy metal mobility into water resources. We sampled intact soil cores from the Isle of Skye with low background N deposition history and having Serpentine rock known for its higher heavy metal concentrations including zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb). The effects of 16 (16kgN) and 32 kg N ha⁻¹ year⁻¹ (32kgN), and liming with 32kgN (32kgN+Lime) on soil solution chemistry and heavy metal mobilization were investigated over the 15-month study. Nitrogen in deposition load was added at five ammonium (NH₄⁺) to nitrate (NO₃⁻) ratios of 9:1, 5:1, 1:1, 1:5 and 1:9 along NO₃⁻dominance. We found significant effects of load on Cu and NH₄⁺/NO₃⁻ ratio on pH, DOC and Zn in soil solution. However, under lime and ratio experimental factors, liming significantly influenced pH, DOC, Cu and Pb, and NH₄⁺/NO₃⁻ ratio pH, DOC, Ni and Zn whereas interactions between lime and ratio was significant for Ni and Cu. pH and DOC increased with N load, liming and NO₃⁻ dominance, and both correlated significantly positively. Liming under NH₄⁺ dominance enhanced DOC production due to supply of base cations in lime. Mobilization of Cu, Ni and Pb was driven by DOC concentrations and, therefore, increased with load, liming and NO₃⁻ dominance in deposition. However, in contrast, low pH and high NH₄⁺ dominance was associated with Zn mobilization in soil solution. On the contrary, despite of some patterns, heavy metals in soil HNO₃ extracts were devoid of any load, lime and NH₄⁺/NO₃⁻ ratio effects. Our study suggests that the effects of N load and forms in deposition on sites with high accumulated loads of metals need to be better quantified through soil solution partitioning models.

Dangerous goods are particularly hazardous, as they can be flammable, explosive, and toxic. These characteristics make them vulnerable to accidents, and such mishaps during port operations can lead to massive economic losses and even deaths. It is, therefore, necessary and important to analyze and study the dangerous goods accidents at ports, so as to identify major factors and prevent them. Formal concept analysis (FCA) is a powerful tool for rule extraction. This paper introduces FCA along with relevant documents and case studies to analyze the dangerous goods accidents at China’s ports, building a concept lattice model of dangerous goods accidents at China’s ports, and reduces the condition attributes to come up with three key attributes of dangerous goods accidents at China’s ports: warehousing management, facilities and equipment, goods registration and extract four effective diagnostic rules for dangerous goods accidents at ports. This paper proposes corresponding governance strategies to the rules of dangerous goods accidents, which can significantly prevent and manage dangerous goods accidents at China’s ports in the future. In the future, the concept scale can be introduced to study the problem that the influencing factor is multi-valued attribute so as to expand the scope of research.

Tobacco is the most widespread non-food crop in the world. In Brazil, tobacco cultivation is one of the main commodities of the southern region. However, its production is associated with environmental impacts and risks to human health, which have yet to be quantified. This paper uses midpoint and endpoint life cycle assessment (LCA) to analyze the potential environmental damage and human health risk associated with agricultural production of conventional Virginia (CV), organic Virginia (OV), and Burley (BU) tobacco varieties. Organic tobacco production substitutes synthetic fertilizers and pesticides with organic compounds in the cropping stage. The results show that for one ton of dried tobacco, BU, CV, and OV emit 1,610, 1,426, and 1,091 kg CO₂ eq, respectively. For organic production, greater impacts are linked to the land use (LU) impact category. The endpoint results showed that OV production resulted in a higher potential for human and environmental damage than BU and CV. The drying of green OV and CV tobacco requires the burning of firewood, which emits high levels of particulate matter and is associated with human health (HH) damage. Overall, the HH damage category accounts for 68%, 82%, and 78% of the total score points associated with the production of BU, CV, and OV.

Aspergillus fumigatus is the primary agent of invasive aspergillosis (IA) causing high morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. Triazole resistance in A. fumigatus and its sources have gained wide attention. For several years, environmental fungicides use has been proposed as the major cause for triazole resistance in A. fumigatus. However, there are few studies on azole-resistant A. fumigatus (ARAF) selected by triazole fungicides in agricultural systems. We studied the possible emergence of ARAF in the field after exposure to triazole fungicide tebuconazole. Our results showed that exposure to tebuconazole in soil selects for resistance to triazoles in A. fumigatus. The probability of ARAF developing in soils depends upon the concentrations of tebuconazole after application. We suggest that tebuconazole applications should be minimized to reduce selective pressure for the generation of ARAFs.

Solutions of technical polychlorinated naphthalene (PCN) Halowax formulations (Halowax 1014 and Halowax 1051) diluted with Milli-Q water and sealed in the Pyrex glass tubes and quartz tubes were subjected to artificial solar and natural solar irradiation under different time intervals and field conditions. In particular, the results of several field irradiation experiments have shown increased PCN photodegradation as altitude increases above sea level. Irradiation in artificial solar conditions caused a substantial change in the PCN congener profiles of Halowax 1014 and Halowax 1051 test solutions. Interestingly, in long-term experiments, the relative abundance of congeners that contribute to dioxin-like activity, i.e. the compounds such as 1,2,3,5,7- and 1,2,4,6,7-PentaCN (PeCNs #52/60), 1,2,3,4,6,7- and 1,2,3,5,6,7-HexaCN (HxCNs #66/67), and 1,2,3,4,5,6,7-HeptaCN (HpCN #73), temporally increased substantially. In the field photodegradation experiments, the PCNs #52/60 and #66/67 were formed, while a relative persistence of PCN #73 was evident. Highest chlorinated octachloronaphthalene (OcCN #75), exposed to strong UV radiation at high altitude, was much less stable than lower molecular mass PCNs. Photodegradation of the technical PCN formulations produced also an unidentified aromatic compound. We conclude, that photodegradation of PCNs, which are considered as a widespread anthropogenic pollutants, is not restricted to any specific environmental condition. It can also be observed at low altitudes.

Sertraline is a widely used antidepressant that becomes an aquatic pollutant through metabolic excretion and improper disposal. Determining the impact of sertraline on benthic microbial ecosystems is important for the transformation of river biogenic elements. However, the molecular initiating event induced by sertraline is more readily observed at higher levels, such as the individual or population level of larger organisms, and the effect is not pronounced in benthic organisms, which are directly involved in nitrogen transformation. Therefore, this study used DNA metabarcoding to analyze the effect of sertraline on the microbial ecosystem and material cycles in river sediment through the lens of a microbial food web. The presence of sertraline in the river sediment enhanced the mineralization capacity of nitrogen and increased the accumulation of nitrate in the sediment. Sertraline affected the structure of the microbial food web by stimulating different successions of bacteria and eukaryotes. A structural equation model revealed that sertraline affected the microbial food web model through top-down forces (predation) by reducing the trophic transfer efficiency from metazoans to protozoans. This effect resulted in decreases in the trophic transfer efficiency from protozoans to bacteria and increases in nitrogen mineralization capacity. This was followed by a gradual increase in the nitrification reaction under the action of nitrifying bacteria, increasing the threat to the ecological health of rivers. The results show that sertraline affects the material cycle of river ecosystems and emphasizes that the assessment of the ecological risks of sertraline needs to be considered from the perspective of the material cycle of ecosystems.

Silver (Ag) is released from a range of products and accumulates in agricultural soils as silver sulfide (Ag₂S) through the application of Ag-containing biosolids as a soil amendment. Although Ag₂S is comparatively stable, its solubility increases with salinity, potentially altering its impacts on microbial communities due to the anti-microbial properties of Ag. In this study, we investigated the impacts of Ag on the microbially mediated N cycle in saline soils by examining the relationship between the (bio)availability of Ag₂S and microbial functioning following the application of Ag₂S-containing sludge. Synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) revealed that the Ag₂S was stable within the soil, although extractable Ag concentrations increased up to 18-fold in soils with higher salinity. However, the extractable Ag accounted for <0.05% of the total Ag in all soils and had no impact on plant biomass or soil bacterial biomass. Interestingly, at high soil salinity, Ag₂S significantly increased cumulative N₂O emissions from 80.9 to 229.2 mg kg⁻¹ dry soil (by 180%) compared to the corresponding control sludge treatment, which was ascribed to the increased abundance of nitrification and denitrification-related genes (amoA, nxrB, narG, napA, nirS, and nosZ) and increased relative abundance of denitrifiers (Rhodanobacter, Salinimicrobium, and Zunongwangia). Together, our findings show that the application of Ag₂S-containing sludge to a saline soil can disrupt the N cycle and increase N₂O emissions from agroecosystems.

Occupational exposure to hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) can cause cytotoxicity and carcinogenicity. In this study, we established a liver injury model in rats via intraperitoneal injection of potassium dichromate (0, 2, 4, and 6 mg/kg body weight) for 35 d to investigate the mechanism of Cr(VI)-induced liver injury. We found that Cr(VI) induced hepatic histopathological lesions, oxidative stress, and apoptosis and reduced the expression of mitochondrial-related regulatory factors such as adenosine 5′-monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator 1α (PGC-1α) in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, Cr(VI) promoted mitochondrial division and inhibited fusion, leading to increased expression of caspase-3 and production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species. Our study demonstrates that long-term exposure to Cr(VI) induces mitochondrial dynamics disorder by inhibiting AMPK/PGC-1α signaling pathway in rat liver.
