Chemical dispersion of oil with mineral fines in a low temperature environment Полный текст

The increasing risks of potential oil spills in the arctic regions, which are characterized by low temperatures, are a big challenge. The traditional dispersant method has shown limited effectiveness in oil cleanup. This work studied the role of mineral fines in the formation of oil–mineral aggregates (OMAs) at low temperature (0–4°C) environment. The loading amount of minerals and dispersant with different dispersant and oil types were investigated under a full factorial design. The shapes and sizes of OMAs were analyzed. Results showed that the behavior of OMA formation differs when dispersant and mineral fines are used individually or together. Both the experimental and microscopic results also showed the existence of optimal dispersant to oil ratios and mineral to oil ratios. In general, poor oil removal performance was observed for more viscous oil. Corexit 9500 performed better than Corexit 9527 with various oils, in terms of oil dispersion and OMA formation.

Marine fish farms could cause environmental disturbances on the sediment due to uneaten food and fish faeces that impact the marine benthos. Polychaete assemblages are considered good indicators of environmental perturbations. The present study aimed to establish groups of polychaetes as potential indicators of fish farm pollution. This study was carried out in ten fish farms along the Spanish coast. Changes in polychaete assemblage were analyzed with meta-analysis and multivariate techniques. Abundance, richness and diversity showed significant decreases under fish farm conditions. Distribution patterns of polychaetes responded to combinations of physicochemical variables. The main ones are sulfide concentration, silt and clays percentage, and stable nitrogen isotope ratio. The results showed that some families are tolerant, Capitellidae, Dorvilleidae, Glyceridae, Nereididae, Oweniidae and Spionidae; while others are sensitive to fish farm pollution, Magelonidae, Maldanidae, Nephtyidae, Onuphidae, Paralacydoniidae, Paraonide, Sabellidae and also Cirratulidae in spite of being reported as a tolerant family.

Spatial variation in the density and biomass of Branchiostoma caribaeum was analyzed along a sewage contamination gradient identified by fecal steroids in a subtropical estuary, southern Brazil. Sampling, repeated in the austral winter and summer, followed a hierarchical design nested at four spatial scales (sector>1km; area>100m; site>10m; replicate<1m). Density and biomass were significantly lower at sites characterized by high concentrations of fecal steroids. The best combinations of variables that explained the biological similarities among sites involved contamination indicators. Most of the variation of biological data was found at the smallest scales and could be related with the sediment texture. Our study highlighted the usefulness of a multi-scale perspective to evaluate distribution patterns of benthic invertebrates as a biological indication of environmental pollution. Gradient analyses at larger spatial scales may be invalidated by the patchy distribution of benthic fauna if they do not account for such small scale variability.

Liver tumours in flatfish have been diagnosed using histopathology for decades in order to monitor the impacts of marine pollution in coastal and estuarine environments. This traditional method has been coupled with molecular analyses of tumours in the liver of the dab, Limanda limanda, in order to elucidate underpinning molecular level aetiology of such disease. A laser capture microdissection technique for molecular investigation of cancer has been applied in fish. The present study provides optimized steps for environmental sample utilisation: a procedure for field sample collection and handling; a method allowing reliable identification of lesions on frozen tissue sections; and, downstream molecular analyses of tumourigenesis markers (retinoblastoma gene) in laser microdissected samples. This approach facilitates the use of wild flatfish as a model of environmentally-induced tumourigenesis, and has wide applicability to any disease pathology for which the underpinning molecular aetiology is required.

A two dimensional numerical model has been developed to study the dispersion of a primary pollutant emitted from an urban area source in the presence of mesoscale wind. The model takes into account the transformation and removal mechanisms through chemical reaction, dry deposition and gravitational settling processes. The numerical model is solved using the Crank–Nicolson finite difference scheme under the stability dependent meteorological parameters involved in wind velocities and eddy diffusivity profiles. The urban heat island effect generates its own mesoscale winds and consequently prevents the dispersal of pollutants which will result in an increase in the concentration of pollution in the atmosphere. The analysis shows that the mesoscale wind reduces the concentration of a primary pollutant in the upwind side of centre of heat island and increases the concentration in the downwind side of centre of heat island.

Hedges are ubiquitous green elements in many European cities. The selection of hedge types characterized by different traits can be suggested for urban greening projects to decrease pollution levels. At this end, carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration and noise attenuation capability were analyzed in the following hedge types: Laurus nobilis, Nerium oleander, Pittosporum tobira and Pyracantha coccinea, largely used as green infrastructure in Rome (Italy). Representative hedges for each species were selected from high level traffic streets in the city centre (P sites). Traffic density (TD) was monitored simultaneously with CO2 concentration and noise level (N) in each of the considered P sites. The monthly CO2 sequestration capability (MSC) was calculated multiplying the total photosynthesis per hedge by the total photosynthetic activity time (in hours) per month. The multiple regression analysis predicted noise attenuation (ΔN) by a linear combination of total leaf area (TLA), total leaf density (TLD) and leaf mass area (LMA) of the considered hedge types. All the considered species, being evergreens, were active all year long, including winter, when CO2 emissions from road transport peaked. Nevertheless, among the considered hedge types, P. tobira and L. nobilis were the most efficient species in both MSC (31.6±2.8 and 25.4±2.4 kg CO2 month–1, respectively) and ΔN (15±1%, mean value). The results give insight on the use of hedges to mitigate pollution effects. Moreover, this method can be used to monitor hedge contribution to air quality, in relation to various elements in the city (i.e. traffic density, new cars produced, application of management projects, local laws). These results might be available for projects based on the use of vegetation in order to improve environmental quality in urban areas.

Recently, within the framework of European directives, the importance of marine monitoring programs has increased. In this study, a dense sampling grid was applied for a detailed assessment of the metal contents of surface sediments and suspended particulate matter from the Jade Bay, one of the tidal basins in the southern North Sea. The local lithogenic background was defined and compared with average shale, a common reference material. Based on the calculated non-lithogenic fraction and a cluster analysis, the metals are distributed in two groups: (i) elements of mainly natural origin (Co, Cr, and a major portion of Cd) and (ii) elements associated with anthropogenic activity (As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sn, and Zn). However, even the metals of the second group are enriched by at most a factor of two relative to the local background, suggesting minimal anthropogenic impact. Spatial distribution maps show that the harbor area of Wilhelmshaven may be a particularly important source of metal.

Enhancement of the diesel oil degradation ability of a marine bacterial strain by immobilization on a novel compound carrier material Полный текст

A novel floatable and biodegradable carrier material was made by coating puffed foxtail millet (PFM) with a calcium alginate (CA)-chitosan compound membrane. A diesel oil-degrading marine bacterial strain, Acinetobacter sp. F9, was immobilized on the carrier material. The number of viable F9 cells immobilized on the carrier material reached approximately 5×109CFU/g. This formulation could be stored at −20°C and 4°C for 10weeks without a significant decrease in the number of viable immobilized cells. SEM results showed that the coating membrane was porous and that F9 cells were immobilized on the walls of the pores. The immobilized F9 cells were able to remove more than 90% of the diesel oil by the second day, while free F9 cells did not remove 90% of the diesel oil until the seventh day. GC–MS analysis indicated that the immobilized F9 cells could remove diesel oil more completely than free cells. The immobilization of the F9 cells enhanced their ability to biodegrade diesel oil.

Pharmaceuticals are common chemical contaminants in estuaries receiving effluent from wastewater and sewage treatment facilities. The purpose of this research was to examine benthic microalgal (BMA) community responses to sublethal exposures to tylosin, a common and environmentally persistent antibiotic. Bioassays, using concentrations of 0.011–218μmoltylosinl−1, were performed on intertidal muddy sediments from North Inlet Estuary, SC. Exposure to tylosin resulted in a reduction in total BMA biomass and primary productivity. Furthermore, exposure seemed to retard diatom growth while having a minimal effect on cyanobacteria biomass. Estuarine systems receiving chronic inputs of trace concentrations of tylosin, as well as other antibiotics, may experience significant reductions in BMA biomass and primary productivity. Given the well-documented role of BMA in the trophodynamics of estuaries, these impacts will likely be manifested in higher trophic levels with possible impairments of the structure and function of these sensitive systems.

The paper detailed a water quality modelling study of a hyper-tidal estuary, undertaken to assess the impact of various bacteria input loads on the receiving waters in a coastal basin in the UK, by using the model developed in previous study of the same authors enterococci, used as the indicators for bathing water quality under the new European Union (EU) Bathing Water Directive, were numerically modelled using a hydro-environmental model. In particular, the numerical model used in this study includes the effects of sediment on bacteria transport processes in surface water. Finally, the importance of sediment bacteria inputs on the bathing water quality was also investigated under different weather and tidal condition. During spring tide, the bacteria input from the bed sediments are dominant for both wet and dry weather conditions. During neap tides and during dry weather conditions the inputs of bacteria from the bed sediment were still dominant, but during wet weather conditions the inputs from river were dominant. Under different tidal flow conditions some parameters had a more significant role than others. During high flow conditions the sediment re-suspensions processes were dominant, therefore the bed bacteria concentrations played a dominant role on the overall bacteria concentration levels in the water column. In contrast, during low flow conditions sediment deposition prevails and bacteria are removed from the water column. The partition coefficient was found to be more important than the bed bacteria concentrations, during low flow conditions.
