There is increasing concern about phenolic environmental estrogens (PEEs) in river systems, especially in economically developed regions, because of their potential to impact ecological systems. We studied the distribution of, ecological risks from, and factors that influenced PEEs in the sediments from the Duliujian River in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Urban Agglomeration and the Pearl River in Guangdong Province in China. The three target PEEs, nonyl phenol (4-NP), octyl phenol (4-t-OP), and bisphenol A (BPA), were detected in the sediments at concentrations ranging from 204.4 to 12604.3, 32.6 to 297.3, and from 12.8 to 298.4 ng g−1 in the Pearl River, and from 153.5 to 3614.9, 90.7 to 990.0, and 83.5–913.3 ng g−1 in the Duliujian River, respectively. The PEE concentrations were significantly and positively correlated with total organic carbon in the river sediments (p < 0.1). Urbanization influenced the distribution of PEEs and applications and discharges of PEEs were associated with large populations and industries. Rainfall and wastewater discharge patterns also influenced how PEEs were distributed in river sediments. The potential ecological risks from 4-NP, 4-t-OP, and BPA in these two rivers were high. Measures should be put in place to control the transport and storage of these compounds in river systems.

Negative effects of environmental antibiotics on non-target organisms were observed in studies at various levels of the biological organization. Yet, studies combining the effects at multiple levels were required to interpret their ecological frequencies in a broader context. Currently, effects of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was studied on the amphipod Hyalella azteca which is important in ecological stability. At the biochemical level, effects on the antioxidant capacities showed stimulation with an inverse U-shaped change over the concentrations. The stimulation was greater in male than in females. Effects on the oxidative stress showed a U-shaped change which included stimulation and inhibition in males, and solely stimulation in females. The stimulation was less in males than in females. Effects on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities in both sexes were well correlated with those on oxidative stress (p < 0.05). At the individual level, effects on the body weight showed an inverse U-shaped change over concentrations, and the stimulation was greater in males than in females. The stimulations were significantly correlated with the male oxidative stress (p < 0.01), and male (p < 0.1) and female AChE activities (p < 0.05). Effects of SMX on the pre-copulation behavior also showed an inverse U-shaped change which correlated with male and female antioxidant capacities (p < 0.05) and the male body weight (p < 0.05). At the population level, effects on the reproduction showed an inverse U-shaped change over concentrations, and they significantly correlated with the male body weight (p < 0.05) and the pre-copulation behavior (p < 0.05). Summing up, SMX provoked simultaneous disturbances on the amphipod at multiple levels with sex-dependent responses.

Antifouling paint particles (APPs) of between 500 μm and >2 mm in diameter have been identified in silty, intertidal estuarine sediments through a combination of microscopy and x-ray fluorescence spectrometry. APPs were heterogeneously distributed, with maximal concentrations of 430 particles L−1 (0.2 g L−1) near to a facility where boats are regularly maintained and 400 particles L−1 (4.2 g L−1) at a location where old boats had been abandoned, with the majority of particles encountered in the finest size fraction retrieved. APPs contained variable concentrations of Cu, Zn, Sn and Pb, with respective maxima of 562,000, 269,000, 9,970 and 126,000 mg kg−1. These characteristics are attributed to a multitude of contemporary and historic sources of an assortment of formulations and result in significant but heterogeneous metal contamination of local sediments. APPs were also identified in the guts of the deposit-feeding ragworm, Hediste diversicolor, that inhabited sediments impacted by abandoned boats or boating activities. The tissue of H. diversicolor was particularly enriched in Cu where ingested APPs were observed, with a significant correlation between dry weight Cu concentrations in the two media (r = 0.734) presumably reflecting the inability of the animal to regulate this metal. While the toxicity of APPs requires further investigation, there is clearly a need for stricter regulations on antifouling wastes in boatyards and marinas and a requirement to better manage abandoned boats.

As a widely used organotin acaricide nowadays, azocyclotin (ACT) could induce thyroidal endocrine disruption in fishes and amphibians, but its dominant disrupting mode remains unknown. In this study, zebrafish were firstly exposed to ACT (0.18–0.36 ng/mL) from 2 hpf (hours post fertilization) to 30 dpf (days post fertilization), and a series of developmental toxicological endpoints and thyroid hormones were measured. Result showed that no developmental toxicity to zebrafish was found in 0.18 and 0.24 ng/mL groups except decreased body weight (30 dpf, 0.24 ng/mL). However, exposed to 0.36 ng/mL ACT led to reductions in heartbeat (48 hpf), hatching rate (72 hpf) and bodyweight (30 dpf). General tendencies of decreases in free T3 but increases in free T4 and reductions in ratio of free T3/T4 were also found, inferring that type II deiodinase (Dio2) was repressed. This inference was confirmed by Western analysis that Dio2 expression reduced by 42.7% after 0.36 ng/mL ACT treatment. Moreover, RNA-Seq analysis implied that exposed to 0.36 ng/mL ACT altered the genome-wide gene expression profiles of zebrafish. Totally 5660 genes (involving 3154 down-regulated and 2596 up-regulated genes) were differentially expressed, and 13 deferentially expressed genes including down-regulated dio2 were significantly enriched in thyroid hormone signaling pathway. Subsequently, an in vitro thyroid receptor-reporter gene assay using GH3 cells was performed to further explore the potential disrupting mechanism. Result showed that luciferase activity slightly increased after exposure to ACT alone or ACT combined with low level T3, but was suppressed when combined with high level T3. It indicted there probably existed a competitive relationship in some extent between ACT and T3 in vivo. Overall, the present study provided preliminary evidences that long-term exposure to trace ACT repressed Dio2 expression, declined T3 and then activated thyroid receptor-mediated signaling, thereby leading to integrated thyroid endocrine disruption in zebrafish larvae.

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) is one of the most commonly used metal oxide nanoparticles for commercial and industrial products. An increase in the manufacturing and use of the CuO NPs based products has increased the likelihood of their release into the aquatic environment. This has attracted major attention among researchers to explore their impact in human as well as environmental systems. CuO NPs, once released into the environment interact with the biotic and abiotic constituents of the ecosystem. Hence the objective of the study was to provide a holistic understanding of the effect of abiotic factors on the stability and aggregation of CuO NPs and its correlation with their effect on the development of zebrafish embryo. It has been observed that the bioavailability of CuO NPs decrease in presence of humic acid (HA) and heteroagglomeration of CuO NPs occurs with clay minerals. CuO NPs, CuO NPs + HA and CuO NPs + Clay significantly altered the expression of genes involved in development of dorsoventral axis and neural network of zebrafish embryos. However, the presence of HA with clay showed protective effect on zebrafish embryo development. These findings provide new insights into the interaction of NPs with abiotic factors and combined effects of such complexes on developing zebrafish embryos genetic markers.

The present study was performed to evaluate the neurobehavioural deficit induced by nonylphenol (NP), a well-known xenobiotic chemical. The neurotoxic mechanism from oxidative stress and serotonin-related progress was also investigated. Caenorhabditis elegans was exposed at different levels of NP ranging from 0 to 200 μg L⁻¹ for 10 days. The results revealed that from a relatively low concentration (i.e., 10 μg L⁻¹), significant effects including decreased head thrashes, body bends and forging behaviour could be observed, along with impaired learning and memory behaviour plasticity. The level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in head was significantly elevated with the increase of NP concentrations from 10 to 200 μg L⁻¹. Through antioxidant experiment, the oxidative damage caused by NP restored to some extent. At a NP concentration of 200 μg L⁻¹, the significant increased expression of stress-related genes, including sod-1, sod-3, ctl-2, ctl-3 and cyp-35A2 gene, was observed from integrated gene expression profiles. In addition, in comparison with wild-type N2 worms, the ROS accumulation was increased significantly with the mutation of sod-3. Tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) in ADF and NSM neurons sharply decreased at the concentrations of 10–200 μg L⁻¹. The transcription of TPH synthesis-related genes and serotonin-related genes were both suppressed, including tph-1, cat-1, cat-4, ser-1, and mod-5. Overall, these results indicated that NP could induce neurotoxicity on Caenorhabditis elegans through excessive induction of ROS and disturbance synthesis of serotonin. The conducted research opened up new avenues for more effective exploration of neurotoxicity caused by NP.

To better understand the mechanism of PM₂.₅ explosive growth (EG), we conducted concurrent measurements of gaseous pollutants, PM₂.₅ and its chemical composition (inorganic ions, organic carbon, and element carbon) with a time resolution of 1 h in Shanghai in late autumn and winter from 2014 to 2017. In this study, the EG events, which are defined as the net increase in the mass concentration of PM₂.₅ by more than 100 μg m⁻³ within hours, are separately discussed for 3, 6, or 9 h. The number of EG events decreased from 19 cases in 2014 to 6 cases in 2017 and the corresponding PM₂.₅ concentration on average decreased from 183.6 μg m⁻³ to 128.8 μg m⁻³. Both regional transport and stagnant weather (windspeed < 2.0 m s⁻¹) could lead to EG events. The potential source contribution function (PSCF) shows that the major high-pollution region is in East China (including Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong, and Anhui Province) and the North China Plain. The contribution of stagnant conditions to EG episode hours of 55% (198 h, 156.9 μg m⁻³) is higher than that of regional transport (45%, 230 h, 163.0 μg m⁻³). To study the impact of local emission, chemical characteristics and driving factors of EG were discussed under stagnant conditions. The major components contributing to PM₂.₅ are NO₃⁻ (17.9%), organics (14.1%), SO₄²⁻ (13.1%), and NH₄⁺ (13.1%). The driving factors of EG events are the secondary aerosol formation of sulfate and nitrate and primary emissions (vehicle emissions, fireworks, and biomass burning), but the secondary transformation contributes more to EG events. The formation of sulfate and nitrate is dominated by gas-phase oxidation and heterogeneous reactions, which are enhanced by a high relative humidity. The current study helps to understand the chemical mechanism of haze and provides a scientific basis for air pollution control in Shanghai.

During the last 70 years 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6-Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) has been one of the most extensively used pesticides. Only the gamma-isomer has insecticidal properties. For the marketing of gamma-HCH (lindane) the other 85% HCH isomers which are formed as by-products during HCH production had to be separated and became finally hazardous waste. For each tonne of lindane 8–12 tonnes of waste HCH isomers were produced and production of the approximately 600,000 t of lindane has therefore generated 4.8 to 7.2 million tonnes of HCH/POPs waste. These waste isomers were mostly buried in uncontrolled dumps at many sites around the world. The stockpiles and the large contaminated sites can be categorized as “mega-sites”. Countries with HCH legacy problems include Albania, Argentina, Austria, Azerbaijan, Brazil, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Macedonia, Nigeria, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, The Netherlands, UK, Ukraine and the USA.As lindane and alpha- and beta-HCH have been listed as POPs in the Stockholm Convention since August 2010, the problem of stockpiles of HCH waste is now documented and globally acknowledged.This article describes briefly the legacy of HCH and lindane that has been created. Three of the mega-sites are being discussed and demonstrate the increase in pollution footprint over time. Recent developments in the EU (including the Sabinanigo project in Aragon/Spain) and on a global level are presented. A short overview is given on lack of activities and on actions of countries within their obligations as Parties of the Stockholm Convention. Furthermore, current country activities supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the “financing mechanism” of the convention, are listed. Finally, conclusions and recommendations are formulated that will contribute to the solution of this problem over the next 25 years.

Swine waste is a reservoir of microbial pollutants, including pathogens, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB); therefore, soil fertilized with swine waste is an essential pathway for the dissemination of microbial pollutants from concentrated swine farms to the public. To rationalize the intervals of swine wastes application and investigate the effects of soil type on the occurrences of microbial pollutants and antibiotic resistance, pot experiments were conducted with three typical soils, humic acrisol, calcaric cambisols and histosols, being collected from south, northwest and northeast China (soil-R, soil-Y and soil-B, respectively). The soils were amended with swine slurry, digestate and chemical fertilizers and then conducted for 172 days. The influence of microbial pollutants and antibiotic resistance in soil posed by digestate application was similar to that of the chemical fertilizers, while swine slurry posed high risks to the soil. Soil-B which had the highest organic matter and neutral pH was least influenced by the swine slurry amendment. tetG, tetM and ermF were persistent ARGs in the slurry treated soil, and their decay rates fitted to first-order kinetics in the order soil-B> soil-Y > soil-R. Putative pathogens showed strong correlations with ARGs, suggesting a risk of dissemination. The initial 43–82 days was the active phase of microbial pollution in slurry treated soil, during which time heavy metals, moisture content, total organic carbon and the microbial community were key factors contributing to changes in antibiotic resistance. Fertilization intervals of livestock wastes should be lengthened over the ARG active phase.

Human activities lead to increasing concentration of the stable elements cesium (Cs) and strontium (Sr) and their radioactive isotopes in the food chain, where plants play an important part. Here we investigated Plantago major under the influence of long-term exposure to stable Cs and Sr.The plants were cultivated hydroponically in different concentrations of cesium sulfate (between 0.002 and 20 mM) and strontium nitrate (between 0.001 and 100 mM).Uptake of Cs and Sr into leaves was analyzed from extracts by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). It was increased with increasing external Cs and Sr concentrations. However, the efficiency of Cs and Sr transfer from solution to plants was higher for low external concentrations. Highest transfer factors were 6.78 for Cs and 71.13 for Sr. Accumulation of Sr was accompanied by a slight decrease of potassium (K) and calcium (Ca) in leaves, whereas the presence of Cs in the medium affected only uptake of K.The toxic effects of Cs and Sr were estimated from photosynthetic reactions and plant growth.In leaves, Cs and Sr affected the chlorophyll fluorescence even at their low concentrations. Low and high concentrations of both ions reduced dry weight and length of roots and leaves.The distribution of the elements between the different tissues of leaves and roots was investigated using Energy Dispersive X-Ray microanalysis (EDX) with scanning electron microscope (SEM). Overall, observations suggested differential patterns in accumulating Cs and Sr within the roots and leaves.When present in higher concentrations the amount of Cs and Sr transferred from environment to plants was sufficient to affect some physiological processes. The experimental model showed a potential for P. major to study the influence of radioactive contaminants and their removal from hotspots.
