Relationships between urban nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and atmospheric circulation at two spatial scales were studied for Southern Sweden. Lamb Weather Types (LWT) describe the circulation (scale: thousands of kilometers) including non–directional (cyclonic and anticyclonic) and directional types depending on the wind direction. LWTs with low wind speeds (anticyclonic, NW and N) were associated with strongly elevated [NO2], between 46–52% of the daily averages of NO2 exceeded the 60μg m−3 air quality standard (AQS) when occurring during these LWTs. The lowest fractions of exceedances of NO2 AQS were generally observed for LWTs E, S, SW and W. A larger scale circulation (several thousands of kilometers) was represented by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) affecting meteorology over middle and high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere. While a negative NAO index (NAOI) favors stagnant high pressure weather over Northern Europe, a positive NAOI is often associated with windy conditions. High [NO2] was found to be frequent under negative NAOI. Additionally, larger fractions of exceedances of NO2 AQS were observed for the majority of LWTs occurring at negative NAOI. It’s concluded that both LWTs and NAOI had partly independent effects on the urban air quality in a North European city. These circulation indices can be useful tools for air pollution risk assessment and forecasting.

Grundström, Maria
Urban air quality is a global health concern and is a growing problem due to large migration of people from rural areas to cities, a phenomenon occurring in many parts of the world. This means that more and more people can be expected to be exposed to high levels of air pollutants, many of which are associated with the urban environment. The exposure situation is characterised by different compounds emitted from different sources such as traffic, industry, wood burning and energy production. Air pollution levels tend to vary temporally both during the day and between seasons. Another important atmospheric constituent to consider is pollen which together with air pollutants can cause severe health effects in sensitive people. The climate and weather governs the atmospheric processes responsible for ventilation and stagnation of the air, which in turn also provides conditions for good or poor air quality. This thesis has investigated the urban air pollution levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2), ozone (O3), particles (PM10 and PNC, particle number concentration) and birch pollen levels in relation to meteorology and atmospheric circulation. In this study circulation was represented by the large scale circulation pattern called the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and by the synoptic circulation classification scheme Lamb Weather Types (LWT). The city of Gothenburg has been the main location but air quality and pollen in Malmö has also been investigated. It was shown that air pollution has a strong association to the variation in weather conditions represented by both NAO and LWTs. In winter calm and stagnant air masses were associated with high levels of NO and NO2, these conditions were more common NAO was in its so called negative mode (characterized e.g. by low wind speeds) and in LWTs associated with calm conditions and thus limited ventilation. Ultrafine particles (UFP), considered to be of large importance for health effects, are in many cases the dominating fraction in PNC. NOx was found to be a good proxy of PNC, e.g. situations with high NOx can be expected to have high PNC. Furthermore, the occurrence of high NO2, O3 and PM10 were co-varying very well with the occurrence of high birch pollen counts in Gothenburg. These situations were also associated with high sales of over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamines, indicating a combined effect on health symptoms represented by OTC sales, especially during calm and dry weather conditions. Finally, the usefulness of LWTs was illustrated by to their strong association with anomalies of inter-annual air pollution levels. By adjusting annual concentration/deposition trends of air pollutants for the yearly LWT variability, temporal trends were greatly improved, e.g. the relative importance of weather was quantified permitting more accurate evaluation of emission changes on air pollution levels. Furthermore, the strong association between urban air quality and atmospheric circulation shown in this thesis highlights the LWT classification as a good option to be integrated in a tool for risk assessment and information system for urban air quality including both air pollutants and pollen.

Marine litter has become a worldwide environmental problem, tainting all ocean habitats. The abundance, distribution and composition of litter and its interactions with fauna were evaluated in the upper S. Vicente canyon using video images from 3 remote operated vehicle exploratory dives. Litter was present in all dives and the abundance was as high as 3.31 items100m−1. Mean abundance of litter over rock bottom was higher than on soft substrate. Mean litter abundance was slightly higher than reported for other canyons on the Portuguese margin, but lower in comparison to more urbanized coastal areas of the world. Lost fishing gear was the prevalent type of litter, indicating that the majority of litter originates from maritime sources, mainly fishing activity. Physical contact with sessile fauna and entanglement of specimens were the major impacts of lost fishing gear. Based on the importance of this region for the local fishermen, litter abundance is expected to increase.

A moratorium on further bivalve leasing was established in 1999–2000 in Prince Edward Island (Canada). Recently, a marine spatial planning process was initiated explore potential mussel culture expansion in Malpeque Bay. This study focuses on the effects of a projected expansion scenario on productivity of existing leases and available suspended food resources. The aim is to provide a robust scientific assessment using available datasets and three modelling approaches ranging in complexity: (1) a connectivity analysis among culture areas; (2) a scenario analysis of organic seston dynamics based on a simplified biogeochemical model; and (3) a scenario analysis of phytoplankton dynamics based on an ecosystem model. These complementary approaches suggest (1) new leases can affect existing culture both through direct connectivity and through bay-scale effects driven by the overall increase in mussel biomass, and (2) a net reduction of phytoplankton within the bounds of its natural variation in the area.

Prospects for cost-efficient water protection in the Baltic Sea Полный текст
2015
Hyytiäinen, Kari | Ahlvik, Lassi
This study investigates the economic consequences of the nutrient load reductions agreed in the 2013 revision of the Baltic Sea Action Plan. The cost of meeting the targets set for waterborne sources was estimated to be 1980 MEUR annually. The 2013 revision is a step towards cost-efficient water protection: the cost of meeting the earlier targets would have been 328 MEUR (14%) higher, although the revised targets are now more ambitious with respect to phosphorus. We demonstrate that there is potential for efficiency gains by introducing flexibility mechanisms, such as ‘joint implementation’ to trans-boundary water protection. The potential gains can be as high as 280 MEUR (14%). The most flexible interpretation of the basin targets, one allowing Contracting Parties to account for reductions in other sea basins in proportion to their effect in the focal basin, could further reduce the total cost by 200 MEUR (12%).

This works intends to evaluate the impacts of the national emission ceilings (NEC) reduction scenarios on the air quality in Portugal, verifying the fulfillment of the air quality thresholds for 2020. The air quality numerical modeling system WRF–EURAD was applied to this 2020 future scenario and results were compared to the present situation -year 2012. This modeling system was already evaluated for Portugal domain in previous studies, by comparison with measured air quality data, and showed reasonable skills for all the pollutants. This system was applied over the Continental domain of Portugal, using nesting approach, with a horizontal resolution of 5x5km2, for both scenarios conditions (2012 and 2020) considering the respective emissions data and assuming the 2012 meteorological conditions. The results point towards an improvement of the air quality over Continental Portugal, in particular for particulate matter (in the urban areas of Lisbon and Porto) and SO2 (near specific industrial sources) but do not solve the non–compliance status regarding the O3 threshold value for protection of human health. These results strengthen the importance of including the NEC emission scenarios in the air quality national strategy, but additional mitigation actions need to be designed, with focus on ozone and its precursors, at local and regional scale.

Contamination of the marine environment by human-made plastic litter is a growing and global problem. Our study attempts to explain the presence of two plastic bottles beached on the Ouvéa Island, in the southwest Pacific Ocean, with trademarks from the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea (PNG). We simulate the oceanic drift tracks and associated transit times with a Lagrangian interpretation of the surface currents of a high-resolution ocean model. Our results show that it takes less than 2–3months for drifting objects to connect these archipelagos (New Caledonia, Solomon Islands and PNG) and highlight the role of the meridional component of the circulation rather than the dominant zonal jets. This study shows that the origin or traceability of trash represent valuable information that can be used to test and, ultimately, improve our understanding of ocean circulation.

Mercury (Hg) is one of the main chemicals currently altering Mediterranean ecosystems. Red mullet (Mullus barbatus and M. surmuletus) have been widely used as quantitative bio-indicators of chemical contamination. In this study, we reassess the ability of these species to be used as efficient bio-indicators of Hg contamination by monitoring during 18months Hg concentrations in muscle tissue of mullet sampled from 5 French Mediterranean coastal areas. Mean concentrations ranged between 0.23 and 0.78μgg−1 dry mass for both species. Values were consistent with expected contamination patterns of all sites except Corsica. Results confirmed that red mullets are efficient bio-indicators of Hg contamination. Nevertheless, the observed variability in Hg concentrations calls for caution regarding the period and the sample size. Attention should be paid to environmental and biologic specificities of each studied site, as they can alter the bioaccumulation of Hg, and lead to inferences about environmental Hg concentrations.

Currently, the lipid content of fish feeds includes high amounts of terrestrial vegetable oils, rich in n-6 fatty acids and poor in n-3 fatty acids. Sinking organic matter in the shape of fragmented pellets and fish faeces could be ingested by the surrounding fauna attracted to the submerged structures of aquaculture facilities or living in natural benthic habitats. Fatty acids contained in feed pellets were used as trophic markers to shed light on the assimilation and incorporation of aquaculture wastes by the invertebrate fauna associated to sea-cages. Eighteen macroinvertebrate species, and zooplankton, seaweeds and sediments were collected from two fish farms, one of which (control) had not been used as such for two years. This study demonstrates that macroinvertebrate fauna present in fouling can take up sinking organic matter from farms. Further research should be directed at assessing the potential implications of aquaculture production for the surrounding ecosystem.

A biomonitoring study was performed employing standardized grass cultures. Plants of Lolium multiflorum were exposed at 4 industrial sites over three–month periods in two seasons (dry and rainy) and the biomass produced was used for subsequent measurements of fluoride, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (phenanthrene, anthracene, pyrene, benzo[a]anthracene, chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[a]pyrene, dibenzo[a,h]–anthracene and benzo[g,h,i]perylene), total chlorophyll, malondialdehyde, water, and sulfur content. The total content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) revealed seasonal variations, with the highest values corresponding to the dry season, although this species showed a high retention capacity of PAHs during rainy season. In addition, sampling sites with high vehicular traffic and metal–mechanical industries were associated with the highest content of PAHs. Furthermore, physiological degradation associated with anthropogenic activities in the sampling sites was observed. Fluoride content in the biomonitor was associated with the production and use of cement, which was higher in the dry season.
