Characteristic of grain quality for early generation lines in the crossings between covered and hull-less barley

The objectives of the investigation were to determine effect of hull-less gene on grain quality traits (crude protein, starch and β-glucans) and to evaluate the heritability of these traits in the F4 and F5 generations of six crosses between covered and hull-less barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). The trial was carried out at the State Stende Cereal Breeding Institute during the years 2007 and 2008. Mean value, range and the coefficient of variation of traits for covered and hull-less lines within each cross combination were calculated. Heritability of quality traits was estimated as intergeneration correlation (r) and linear regression coefficients (b). The highest intergeneration correlation values were observed for starch content within covered and hull-less barley populations (rF4:F5=0.609 and 0.635 respectively). Moderate intergeneration relationship was observed for crude protein content within covered barley population (r=0.582), and for β-glucans content within hull-less barley population (r=0.593). The regression estimates of heritability were higher for starch content for both covered and hull-less barleys (b=0.549 and 0.703 respectively). Due to effects of genotype and environment interactions the regression estimates of heritability for crude protein and β-glucans content for both covered and hull-less barley were low (b varied from 0.347 to 0.373).

Progeny testing of Scots pine in Latvia is carried out in only few locations, however, material from selections via seed orchards is deployed in various climatic and soil conditions, therefore concerns arise for influence of genotype environment interaction on levels of genetic gain. Problem is addressed based on 3 open pollinated progeny tests, consisting of 80 open pollinated families, located in 3 distant climatic regions in Latvia. Test age is 27 years, therefore not only growth, but also branch quality traits can be reliably analyzed. Strong genetic correlation (rb=0.80-0.94) among sites for tree height and diameter was found, but considerably weaker for branch traits like diameter of thickest branch (rb=0.52-0.67), average branch diameter, and sum of branch diameters (rb=0.41-0.49). Coefficients of additive genetic variation and coefficients of phenotypic variation among family means, determining potential of improvement via breeding, can be inflated by up to half, based on single site estimates for growth traits and double for quality traits. Backward selection based on results of several trials, in contrast to forward selection or utilization of single experiment results, could lead to improvement of branch traits close to the same as for growth traits (height and diameter). Single site narrow-sense heritability estimates for analyzed growth and quality traits are up to twice as large as across site estimates, indicating possibilities of serious bias in genetic gain estimates based on results from one test site. Testing at 4-5 sites for further breeding work is recommended.

Fast-growing hybrid aspen clones are recommended for establishment of plantation on abandoned agriculture land in Northern Europe. In this study we assessed the productivity, quality and assortment structure of hybrid aspen clones at final felling. Data were collected during the hybrid aspen clonal experiment conducted in the central part of Latvia. Large variation in the productivity level between different clones was affected by growth and survival. From the compared 5 most and least productive clones, based on the yield m**3 haE-1, the faster growing clones have about 17% better survival rate at age 10. Also, the mean annual increment (MAI) differed notably and significantly (p is less than 0.05, α = 0.05) between hybrid aspen clones at the age of 18 years ranging from 7 to 34 m**3 haE-1 yearE-1. Theoretical assortment structure of hybrid aspen at the age of 18 years was the following: 43 ± 4.86% of small dimension saw logs (SDS logs), 21 ± 4.86% high quality saw logs (HQS logs), 18 ± 4.33% pulpwood, 4 ± 0.77% firewood and 13 ± 0.08% of logging residues (tops). The outcome of HQS logs on average is more than 30% from the 5 best clones and further increase can be predicted with age. Stem volume (H2 = 0.32), height (H2 = 0.47) and quality parameters (stem straightness - H2 = 0.73, branch angle - H2 = 0.60) had a high heritability and large differences between clones, indicating notable possibilities to improve the productivity of plantations via selection of the best-growing genetic material.

The present study was conducted to justify that keeping birth weight (BWT) records have little or no significance in genetic improvements of market or adult weights of small ruminants while implementation of community based breeding program (CBBP). Analyses of Pearson correlations ("r") between BWT and six month (6MW), BWT and nine month weight (9MW), three month weight (3MW) and 6MW and 3MW and 9MW were conducted for three indigenous Ethiopian goat breeds, namely Abergelle (AB), Central Highland (CH) and Woyto-Guji (WG).
