Nitrogen removal with apple-tree fruits

The investigation was done at the Latvia State Institute of Fruit-Growing in Dobele in 2009, on the basis of an established field experiment planted in 1997 with apple (Malus domestica Borh.) cultivar 'Melba' (rootstock B9) trees spaced at 1.5 × 4 m distances. Three different treatments of soil moisture management were compared: control, sawdust mulch and fertigation. Soil of the experimental plot was Haplic Luvisol (Hypereutric), sandy loam, interspaced with Cutanic Luvisol, sandy loam. Organic matter – 25 g kgE-1, soil reaction pH – 6.5. Plant available P was 130.9, K – 157.7, and Mg – 102.2 mg kgE-1. The aim of the investigation was to determine nitrogen removal with fruit yield taking into consideration the used soil moisture regulation method – sawdust mulch or fertigation. The applied soil moisture regulation methods (mulch and fertigation) had significant influence on the content of dry matter in apple fruits (p is less than 0.05). The highest content of dry matter was found in the control treatment. A significantly higher nitrogen concentration (47 g kgE-1) in apple dry matter was in the control treatment, whereas in mulch and fertigation treatments nitrogen concentrations were lower (36 and 42 g kgE-1). The highest nitrogen concentration in dry matter was found in fruits with the biggest mass (r=0.61). A negative significant (p is less than 0.05) correlation was found between nitrogen concentration and trunk diameter (r=–0.85), and between nitrogen concentration and yield (r=–0.84). Removal of N was 24.4 kg haE-1 in the control, 22.3 kg haE-1 in the mulch, and 25.0 kg haE-1 in the fertigation treatment.

The research was carried out on ASU WRI grounds in Juodkiškes village in Endocalcari Endohypogleyic Cambisol (CMg-n-w-can). Research basis is 3 different field studies. In Variant I an organic cropping system was used with manure and without mineral fertilizers and pesticides, in II - organic-mineral cropping system with manure and mineral fertilizers, using pesticides, in Variant III - mineral cropping system with mineral fertilizers and pesticides. Minimum mineral nitrogen content in soil was in the organic cropping system, and the total minimal field crop capacity - in the mineral cropping system. However, it has the highest energy efficiency of this system (ETK - 13). Minimal N-NO3 - concentration in drainage water was in the mineral cropping system. In the organic-mineral and organic cropping systems concentration of this compound increases by 11 percent (to 21.8 mg l-1). The minimal concentration of ammonia nitrogen was under organic cropping conditions. The organic cropping system showed the highest runoff and maximum leaching of nitrogen compounds by drainage.

Field trials were carried out at Jõgeva Plant Breeding Institute in 2008 – 2011 to identify the possibilities of using early red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) ‘Jõgeva 433’ (diploid), Washington lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus Lind.) ‘Lupi’ and crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.) as green manure. Fresh material of the above species was ploughed into the soil in autumn of the sowing year. Fertilizer value was quantified through yield and grain quality of spring wheat ‘Vinjett’ and barley ‘Inari’. The composition and amount of ploughed biomass were recorded. By the time of ploughing, Washington lupine had produced the most abundant biomass. >From studied species crimson clover had the lowest fertilizer value – only by 6–7% extra yield of spring wheat in the following year. Crimson clover had no residual effect of fertilization in the second year. The fertilizer values of red clover and Washington lupine were approximately equal. Their effect on yield increase of spring wheat and barley lasted for three years, on grain quality for two years. Red clover, ploughed into the soil in the year of sowing, resulted in maximum spring wheat yield increase of 23.9%, compared with N 0 treatments; that of Washington lupine was 21.3%. The residual positive effect in the second year quantified as barley production increased by 6.2% in Washington lupine and 7.9% in red clover. The yield increase in the third year was 3.9% and 12.1%, respectively. Green manure increased the contents of crude protein and gluten in spring wheat and crude protein content in barley.

Blueberry cultivation is becoming more and more popular in Latvia, and several commercial plantations have been established recently. Highbush blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) are perennial and can grow without replanting for 50 years; therefore a choice of soil and its preparation have a great role. This article summarizes results of research carried out in commercial blueberry plantation established in 2004 on loamy Haplic Cambisol. Soil properties, especially reaction and organic matter content, initially were not suitable for blueberry cultivation, therefore deep tillage and application of soil conditioner (acid sphagnum peat) were done before planting and similar peat mulch was applied every second year. Berry yield of 4 blueberry cultivars, soil properties and the nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium content in growing plant leaves were determined. The obtained results showed that sphagnum peat is an effective material for lowering of soil pH in plant root layer (0 – 40 cm). Data about plant nutrient content in topsoil and subsoil as well as in growing plant leaves will help to develop criteria for soil fertility assessment and diagnosis of plant nutrition.

The investigations were carried out in the Lithuanian Agricultural University Water Research Institute land plots in the Endocalcari Endohypogleyic Cambisols (CMg-n-w-can). The basis of the investigation is 3 variants field experiment. Each variant consists of 3 in 0.54 ha drainage. The traditional arable farming is applied in variant I. In the variant II the land is not being cultivated, but in spring the perennial ryegrass (‘Lolium perenne L’) is being seeded into the spring barley and kept till spring. In the variant III the land is not being cultivated after the harvest and left for the rest till spring. The variant II is distinguished by the minimal mineral nitrogen content. Applied to cultivated and uncultivated land, the min N reserves are increased 51 - 83 and 33 - 40 and 11 - 101 and (38 - 134%) (to 9.5 - 14.3 mg kgE-1 and 152 - 68 and 154 - 61 kg haE-1). The average investigation of N concentration in the drainage water shows, that the minimum concentration of this element was in the second variant. Applied to the traditional farming and uncultivated land, the N concentration is increased by (30 - 42% to 34 and 37 mg lE-1). By average data the min N, leaching by drainage water in the variant II was minimal and about 27 kg haE-1. Applied to the arable farming and uncultivated land, the min N leching is increased (30 - 55%) (to 35 - 42 kg haE-1).

The yield and quality (1000 kernel weight, protein, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content) of peas was studied in cultivar 'Madonna'. The peas (Pisum Sativum L.) were part of the five-year crop rotation experiment where red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), peas, potato (Solarium tuberosum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), were following each other. There were two production variants which followed the crop rotation. In one variant mineral fertilizers and pesticides were used, and the other variant was conversion to organic without any synthetic agrochemicals. In mineral fertilizing variants the background in all variants was N20, P25, and K95 kg haE-1. The previous crop was winter wheat which received in fertilized variants mineral fertilizers with the background of P25 and K95 kg haE-1, the N amount varied from 0 to 150 kg haE-1. The aim of this paper was to study a mineral fertilizing after-effect on the peas which followed the winter wheat. Herbicide MCPA 750 was used. In conversion to organic, the pea grains which followed the crop rotation and mineral fertilizing Nl50 after-effect variants had higher yield, protein and nitrogen content compared to the other variants where mineral fertilizing after-effect was investigated. Phosphorus contents were higher in NO, and conversion to organic variants. Potassium content remained lower in Nl00, and Nl50 mineral fertilizing after-effect variants. The 1000 kernel weight was significantly higher in the variant of conversion to organic compared to the other variants.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the main plant nutrient: mineral nitrogen (NH4 + -N and NO3 -N) dynamic in soil under fertilizing for obtaining high grain yields of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and to determine relationships between nutrient uptake and winter wheat productivity. The field study was carried out at the Research and Study farm ‘Vecauce’ of the Latvia University of Agriculture for two years 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 with winter wheat variety ‘Kranich’. Different nitrogen application rates (0, 85, 153, 150, 175, 180 and 187 kg haE-1) and timing were used for winter wheat. The content of nitrates NO3 -N and ammonium nitrogen NH4 -N was determined in the soil layers 0-0.20 m, 0.20-0.40 m, 0.40-0.60 m. Nitrogen management strategy during the plant growth period based on soil Nmin evaluating can improve N use efficiency and reduce environmental contamination. The maximum of mineral nitrogen content in soil in the vegetation period was observed at the beginning of stem elongation with a tendency to decrease. A significant impact (p is less than 0.05) of nitrogen fertilizer application was noted on the mineral nitrogen content in soil layer 0-0.20 m deep in both trial years. The increasing doses of nitrogen fertilizer raised the amount of mineral N in the soil profile. The significant impact (p is less than 0.001) of nitrogen application and year conditions was observed on grain yield. Close positive correlation significant at 99% probability level was observed between the grain protein content and nitrogen concentration mostly in all soil layers, but it was not found between the grain yield and nitrogen content.

After regaining independence the agricultural production in Estonia has undergone a drastic decline. Due to the inadequate application of fertilizers and pesticides, the yield of field crops and grasslands has decreased 1-7 % per year. The balance of nitrogen in the arable soils is negative, particularly respecting fodder crops. At present, in Estonia most of grasslands are practically not fertilized, or they are fertilized in the last order. The amount of nitrogen removed with the yield of fodder crops, cereals and potato are by 45, 20 and 17 kg ha*[-1) higher, respectively, compared with the amounts of N applied to the soil with organic and mineral fertilizers, available for those crops. The effectiveness of nitrogen fertilizers depends largely on weather conditions during the vegetation period and is the lower, the higher is soil humus content. On gleyic and gley soils, whose humus content is higher, the efficiency of nitrogen fertilizers is 2-3 times lower and the agroecological and economic fertilization risks are higher. On sown grasslands, the efficiency of nitrogen fertilizers depends not so much on soil fertility as on soil water supply, humus content and grass sward type. With proper application of fertilizers, use of suitable plant species and varieties, it is possible to increase significantly not only the yield per unit area but also its nutritive value.

The field experiment of IOSDV (set up in Tartu in 1989) with application of mineral nitrogen fertilizer in combination with different forms of organic fertilizer (manure, straw) during 2 years has led to changes in mineral nitrogen level depending on fertilization regime used. Crop rotation was the following: potato-spring-wheat-spring-barley. The weather conditions during the period of the study were rather different and it appeared that weather conditions are more important factors in determining mineral nitrogen content and crop yields than applying fertilizers.
