Description of the second species of Polletomyia Curler, 2020 (Diptera: Psychodidae) from the Brazilian Amazon
2023
Freddy Bravo | Maíra Xavier Araújo
Polletomyia Curler, 2020 is a Neotropical genus of Psychodidae that was established based on Polletomyia subulata Curler, 2020 from French Guiana. In this paper, we describe a second species of the genus from the Brazilian Amazon. The specimens were collected by the late Larry Quate, a psychodid expert, and are deposited at the Museu de Zoologia of Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana. We provide illustrations and descriptions of both males and females of the new species.

Neoempheria Osten Sacken is a genus of Mycetophilidae that has a life cycle associated with fungi. The genus is diverse in the Neotropical region, with 41 species known from Brazil that are predominantly known in southern and southeastern areas. This study reports on the first record of this genus for Pará state and redescribes Neoempheria bilobata Edwards, which was previously decribed from a male holotype from southern Brazil. We furnished high-resolution images and illustrations, as well as a detailed redescription of this species, based on male and female specimens.

Insects are important ecosystem agents, however, in general, a decline in the composition and abundance of these animals around the globe has been observed. In the urban environment, this characteristic has been more critical, due to the lack of diversity and quality of habitats in these environments, which feature fragmentation of habitats. Thus, processes that naturally affect the composition of animals in the environment can be observed, shaping the abundance of species in their environments, processes such as seasonality, especially in tropical regions, with well-defined rain and dry seasons. Thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate the seasonality and abundance of insects in urban fragments in the Cerrado, for this purpose four urban fragments were sampled in Campo Grande MS, during the months of January to December 2012 using Malaise traps. 26,890 individuals of 19 orders were collected, where the abundance of insect orders stands out Diptera, Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Hemipetera and Trichoptera. A peak in general insect abundance was found in November, and there were significant differences over the months between different orders. However, no difference was found between the fragments, however, there was a trend towards changes in the diversity of orders related to the size of the fragments. The different strategies to deal with water stress well marked for the Cerrado is an important factor for the composition of the insect fauna of the domain and variations in the habitat, such as area size and phytosocionomic composition directly affect the orders found.

Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) of a Future Conservation Unit in the Area of Atlantic Forest in Southern Brazil.Abstract. Anthropophilic mosquitoes were collected in two areas of the Atlantic Forest wich will constitute a Conservation Unit in the municipality of Itapema-SC. The aim of this study was to analyze the level of preservation of two areas of Atlantic Forest trough the composition of the Culicidae fauna. Species diversity was similar in both sampling sites (Dm = 4.02 in Praia Grossa and Dm = 4.04 in São Paulinho). Indices of similarity between the two areas were: CCs = 0.57 and CMH = 0.07. The Simpson’s dominance index was 0.63 in Praia Grossa and 0.31 in São Paulinho. The higher abundance of Anopheles cruzii Dyar & Knaband Culex (Microculex) (taxa related to preserved area) in São Paulinho and Ochlerotatus scapularis (Rondani) and Psorophora ferox (Humboldt) (taxa related to degraded area) in Praia Grossa suggests that the first area is more preserved than the last.

Abstract. Cooling and freezing experiments were carried out at Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz / RJ). Flies colonies were established from specimens collected at the campus using a baited trap, as described for the species: Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann), Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius), Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann), Musca domestica Linnaeus, Peckia ruficornis (Fabricius) and Peckia chrysostoma (Wiedemann). Prolonged exposures at lethal low temperatures can produce deleterious effects (including death) even if the insect does not freeze; during long-term exposure to low temperatures, the organisms may finally die from the exhaustion of energy reserves.

Parasitoids from flies in Natural Park of Nova Iguaçu, RJ - BrazilAbstract. Microhimenopterous represent an alternative control of muscoid dipterous which that can carriers pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, protozoa and helminth eggs. They are considered the main natural enemy of these Diptera. This work aims to report the occurrence of microhimenopterous associated with dipterous pupae of family Calliphoridae (Diptera) in Parque Municipal Natural de Nova Iguaçu, RJ, Brazil. The collections were made weekly in the period from April to October 2006. The main species of parasitoids identified belong to the family Braconidae, Chalcididae and Encyrtidae.
